Removal of uranium by biogenetic jarosite coupled with photoinduced reduction in the presence of oxalic acid: a low-cost remediation technology

Wei Hongfu,Dong Faqin,Chen Mulan,Zhang Wei,He Miao,Liu Mingxue

As jarosite and oxalic acid are ubiquitous in nature, we investigated a remediation technology for uranium-contaminated site by photoinduced reduction coupled with adsorption of jarosite. Jarosite exhibited excellent adsorption properties for uranium, with a highest adsorption capacity 453.98 mg g −1 . With the presence of oxalic acid, U(VI) was removed at a reduction ratio of 30.71% under irradiation. It may be that oxalic acid promoted the reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) in jarosite, and then Fe(II) reduced U(VI) to U(IV). The results confirmed the applicability of the remediation by adsorption using jarosite and light-induced reduction.

Insights into enhanced elimination of U(VI) and Eu(III) by amidoxime-functionalized Ti3C2Tx MXenes

Di Zhang,Bing Zhao,Lijie Liu,Hao Tang,Xiangxue Wang,Shujun Yu

Although two-dimensional transition metal carbides and carbonitrides (MXenes) are becoming increasingly popular in contaminant remediation field, the preparation of MXene nanosheets that can efficiently eliminate the target pollutants still deserves in-depth investigation. Here we produced amidoxime Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets (TC-AO), which were efficient radionuclide adsorbents with high stability and positive affinity, by introducing the amidoxime group into the Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene surface through grafting by diazonium salt. The high stability and abundant functional groups of TC-AO were demonstrated by different characterization techniques such as scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Multiple factors affecting the radionuclide removal performance were explored, including reaction time, temperature, pH, ionic strength, anions and cations. The experimental results demonstrated that the radionuclide uptake by TC-AO was a heat-absorbing, spontaneous single-molecule chemisorption process and was consistent with the pseudo-secondary and Langmuir models. When pH < 6, the mechanism of uranium removal was inner complexation, and as the pH continued to increase, uranium removal shifted to outer complexation. Furthermore, the results certificated that TC-AO exhibited fast reaction kinetics (reaching equilibrium in about 20 min), excellent removal efficiency (279.57 mg U·g −1 and 73.99 mg Eu·g −1 ), outstanding selectivity and good stability. The studies showed that TC-AO had good stability and functionality, which was not only valuable for the design of MXene based adsorbents, but also provided a meaningful option for the extraction of radioactive pollutants from wastewater.

Immobilization of uranium during the deposition of carbonated hydroxyapatite

Tianhao Han,Weiwei Chen,Yawen Cai,Zhimin Lv,Yifeng Zhang,Xiaoli Tan

Background Due to the randomly distributed nature of uranium contamination, remediation strategies often concentrate on in-situ immobilization. Limestone can limit the migration of uranium through its spontaneous replacement reaction with phosphate, and achieve uranium immobilization. Methods In this study, the immobilization of uranium in the deposition process of hydroxyapatite was investigated. The effect of carbonate concentration on the reaction process was studied by adding Na 2 CO 3 . Significant findings The deposition process is accompanied by the immobilization of uranium by co-precipitation. The immobilization (92.6%) of uranium (0.52 mmol/L) is due to the formation of calcium uranyl phosphate, increasing carbonate concentration has a significant inhibitory effect on uranium immobilization, and the 50 Mm carbonate can reduce the uranium immobilization efficiency by nearly 20%. XRD, FTIR, Raman, XPS, EA and fluorescence spectroscopy proved that co-precipitation, complexation, and encapsulation were the main mechanisms of uranium immobilization. Through determining the ratios of type-A and type-B substitutions, it reveals the immobilization of uranium weakens due to the competition of carbonate and phosphate. Our study provides the deposition of uranium in the geosphere should be taken into account for remediation and radioactive pollution disposal.

Synergistically adsorbing and reducing Uranium from water by a novel nano zero-valent copper/MXene 0D/2D nanocomposite

Yi-Lin Liu,Chao Zhang,Lulin Guo,Qingming Zeng,Rongzhong Wang,Haodong Chen,Qingyan Zhang,Qingyi Zeng

Proper disposal of uranium-containing waste is of utmost importance for safeguarding the environment and human health. In this study, we proposed a novel zero-dimensional (0D)/two-dimensional (2D) nanocomposite material, nZVC/Ti 3 C 2 , composed of nano zero-valent copper (nZVC) nanoparticles loaded onto Ti 3 C 2 MXene nanoflakes, which was prepared using a simple in situ chemical reduction method. The uniform dispersion of 0D nZVC nanoparticles, with a size of approximately 5 nm, onto the 2D ultrathin Ti 3 C 2 MXene effectively prevented agglomeration and corrosion of nZVC. This unique configuration provided numerous adsorption sites for UO 2 2+ and facilitated a fascinating charge channel for reducing adsorbed UO 2 2+ into low-mobilized UO 2 by nZVC. Under the synergistic effect of Ti 3 C 2 MXene and nZVC, remarkable efficiency and selectivity of nZVC/Ti 3 C 2 for U (VI) removal were demonstrated, which exhibited an exceptional adsorption capacity of up to 360 mg/g, coupled with a high removal efficiency of 97.5 % and rapid kinetics. Importantly, the presence of humic acid did not significantly affect the U (VI) removal efficiency of the composite because of the reduction effect of nZVC. The underlying mechanism of U (VI) removal was elucidated, revealing the involvement of reductive immobilization in the form of UO 2 (as high as 73.6 %), inner-sphere surface complexation, and hydrolytic precipitation. This mechanism was dependent on the availability of active nZVC and the solution's pH. These findings highlight the potential of nZVC/Ti 3 C 2 composites as efficient decontaminants for radioactive wastewater , thus contributing to advancements in environmental remediation endeavors.

Insights into the performance and mechanism of Cr(VI) and U(VI) removal in water using innovative cross-linked chitosan adsorbent

Peng Cheng,Zhiyang Wei,Yara Arbid,Tengfei Fu,Xiaowei Liu,Olivier Monfort

The primary aim of this work is to test a novel adsorbent prepared by cross-linking of tetrafluoroterephthalonitrile with chitosan (CS-TFT) for the removal of Cr(VI) and U(VI). The CS-TFT is stable until 250 °C and possesses amino functional groups due to the presence of CS that remain intact even after the cross-linking reaction, thus being a benefit for adsorption properties; while the TFT brought roughness to CS-TFT that keeps its high porosity. The adsorption efficiency of CS-TFT is evaluated in the batch experiment of Cr(VI) and U(VI) adsorption along with the effect of different experimental parameters (pH, time, temperature, initial concentrations, and co-existing inorganic cations). The maximum adsorption capacity of CS-TFT for adsorption of Cr(VI) and U(VI) was 265.96 mg·g -1 at pH = 3 and 346.06 mg·g -1 at pH = 5, respectively, at 298 K and the corresponding partition coefficients were 12,454 and 6181 mg g -1 mM -1 , respectively. The kinetics of the adsorption process is identified as a pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir isotherm model is considered. The CS-TFT shows satisfactory reusability since it can be used after 6 cycles of regeneration with a removal efficiency of Cr(VI) and U(VI) higher than 90 %. The adsorption mechanism is also proposed based on investigation of CS-TFT by FTIR, XPS and SEM-EDS before and after adsorption. The results show that hydroxy (–OH) and amino (–NH 2 ) groups play a key role in the chemical adsorption . All these findings suggest that CS-TFT could be a promising adsorbent for wastewaters treatment .

Electrocatalytic Recovery of Uranium Using Reusable Three-Dimensional Wood-Based Electrode

Ying Meng,Hai Chen,Qingke Yuan,Wenbin Liu,Tianhong Zhou,Fubo Luan

Uranium mining generates substantial wastewater, causing environmental risks and resulting in resource loss. Though electrochemical reduction offers a promising method for simultaneous wastewater treatment and uranium recovery, implementation remains constrained by expensive electrodes, inadequate removal efficiency, and frequent regeneration. In this study, a sustainable electrocatalytic approach utilizing a three-dimensional wood-based electrode was developed for uranium recovery. This approach effectively reduces U(VI) to U(IV)O2, achieving 95.2% removal efficiency (k = 1.39 h–1) across concentrations of 0.2–50 μM, lowering uranium to levels below World Health Organization drinking water standards (0.13 μM). The electrode’s electrocatalytic properties, particularly its expanded active surface area and decreased charge transfer resistance, allow uranium recovery at higher potential (−0.40 V) with reduced energy demands. The uranium recovery capacity (7.58 × 105 μmol m–2, incomplete saturation) exceeds conventional TiO2 cathode systems 48-fold, largely eliminating the need for frequent regeneration. This exceptional capacity is attributed to the electrode’s unique three-dimensional channel structure and substantial specific surface area, confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analysis. Furthermore, uranium extraction using NaHCO3 achieves >90.53% recovery efficiency through 20 regeneration cycles. By integrating renewable electrode materials with enhanced electrocatalytic performance and capacity, this approach provides a scalable, sustainable solution for uranium recycling and wastewater remediation.

Improving in vivo Uranyl Removal Efficacy of a Nano-Metal Organic Framework by Interior Functionalization with 3-Hydroxy-2-pyridinone

Mengping Chen,Lang Lang,Lei Chen,Xiaomei Wang,Cen Shi,Qiwen Sun,Yigong Xu,Juan Diwu,Shuao Wang

Comprehensive Summary The environmental contamination of uranium will occur in scenarios such as nuclear accidents and leakage from nuclear waste storage sites, which eventually leads to the internal uranium exposure of people, causing consequential injuries of renal failure, osteosarcoma, etc . The development of uranyl specific chelating agents that could sequester uranium in vivo is in urgent need and is important for the safe and efficient development of nuclear industry. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) already serve as efficient uranium depletion materials in solutions of a wide range of pH and ionic strength for nuclear fuel recycling, uranium extraction from seawater, as well as environmental decontamination. Herein, a chromium-based nano-metal organic framework (nano-MOF) functionalized interiorly with 3,2-HOPO ligands, MIL-101-HOPO, is rationally synthesized. In vitro adsorption experiments show that MIL-101-HOPO exhibits high adsorption selectivity and fast adsorption kinetics for uranyl. The results of in vivo uranyl decorporation assays reveal that MIL-101-HOPO with the decoration of HOPO ligands on the interior wall exhibits significantly increased uranyl removal ratio in kidneys comparing to the pristine nMOFs, and is more effective than the clinically used ZnNa 3 -DTPA. All those results corroborate the interior functionalization of MOFs as an efficient strategy to develop promising uranyl decorporation agents.

Antimicrobial polymer-based zeolite imidazolate framework composite membranes for uranium extraction from wastewater and seawater

Huanhuan Tan,Yang Tang,Zewei Hou,Peipei Yang,Chuntai Liu,Zhipeng Xie,Songwei Li

Extraction uranium (VI) (U(VI)) from wastewater and seawater is highly important for environmental protection and life safety, but it remains a great challenge. In this work, the growth of the zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles on the tannic acid (TA)-3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) modified PVDF (TAP) membrane was designed to obtain an excellent U(VI) adsorbent. The zeolite imidazolate framework composite membrane (TAPP-ZIF-60) was prepared through polyethyleneimine (PEI) bridging strategy and temperature regulation strategy in solvothermal method. The coordination bond between PEI and ZIF-8 and the covalent bond between PEI and TAP are essential in forming stable composite membrane. TAPP-ZIF with different properties was synthesized through a temperature regulation process and the TAPP-ZIF prepared at 60 °C has the uniform morphology and good performance. The adsorption capacity of TAPP-ZIF-60 is 153.68 mg/g (C 0  = 95.01 mg/L and pH = 8.0) and water permeability is 5459 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 . After ten adsorption–desorption cycles, it is proved that TAPP-ZIF-60 has good repeatability and stability. In addition, the TAPP-ZIF-60 composites membrane has a good inhibitory effect on Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) analysis reveal that the coordination between TAPP-ZIF-60 and uranyl ions is the primary factor contributing to the high adsorption capacity.

Efficient Separation of Uranium(VI) by CaCO3-Doped Chitosan with PO43– Modification: Adsorption Behaviors and Mechanism Study

Jun Liao,Congcong Ding,Junping Shi,Liang Jiang,Qiuyi Wang,Lielin Wang

The application of chitosan-based materials for the separation of uranium from wastewater was limited due to the lack of active sites. In this work, a chitosan-based composite (CaCO3@aCS/PA) was effectively created by modifying chitosan with CaCO3 and phytic acid to enhance the adsorption performance of chitosan materials. CaCO3@aCS/PA showed no significant changes and no Ca2+ was detected in the solution after stirring for 10 h in a solution with pH > 3, indicating good stability of CaCO3@aCS/PA, which was beneficial for use in adsorption. Moreover, the adsorption capacity and adsorption percentage of CaCO3@aCS/PA for uranium reached 842.0 mg/g (298 K, pH = 4) and 95.4% (C0 = 10 mg/L, pH = 4) and the adsorption equilibrium time was significantly shortened, indicating that the modification with CaCO3 and phytic acid enhanced the adsorption ability of chitosan for uranium, which was related to the synergistic effect of various active sites (CO32–, PO43–, −OH, and –NH2) on CaCO3@aCS/PA for uranium adsorption.

Synthesis of nanoscale zero-valent iron loaded chitosan for synergistically enhanced removal of U(VI) based on adsorption and reduction

Qi Zhang,Donglin Zhao,Shaojie Feng,Yangyang Wang,Jie Jin,Ahmed Alsaedi,Tasawar Hayat,Changlun Chen

In this study, chitosan (CS) loading well-dispersed nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI/CS) was successfully prepared via the liquid-phase reduction method. Characterizations of the NZVI/CS with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction suggested that the as-prepared NZVI/CS comprised numerous dispersed Fe 0 nanoparticles . Synergistic adsorption and reduction occurred during the removal process based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy . Influence of pH, contract time and temperature on U(VI) removal were investigated. The high removal capacity and rapid removal kinetics were predominately ascribed to the existence of well-distributed NZVI, which could rapidly reduce U(VI) into U(IV). The removal process could be better depicted by the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The thermodynamic parameters showed that the removal process was exothermic. These findings indicate that the synthesized NZVI/CS composites have potential application for the removal of U(VI) from the sewage water.

Performance of the Liquid Cadmium Cathode Assembly for the Electrodeposition of U and Ce from LiCl-KCl Molten Salt

Yanhong Jia,Hong Zhang,Ahmet Burak Çubuk,Biao Wu,Shaoqiang Guo

A mesh-type assembly and stirrer assembly were developed to improve the performance of liquid cadmium cathodes for the electrodeposition of U and Ce from LiCl-KCl molten salt at 773 K. The thermodynamic basis for electrodepositing U and Ce was established through the calculation of equilibrium potentials and cyclic voltammograms, while also examining the co-deposition of Li. Thereafter, U and Ce electrodeposition was performed by galvanostatic electrolysis, and the current efficiency was determined. It was found that both assemblies effectively hampered the growth of U dendrites and Ce-Cd dendritic alloys. However, the utilization of the mesh-type assembly resulted in a greater current efficiency for U, with the maximum deposited amount attaining 7.7 wt% U/Cd without causing U dendrites formation. In contrast, the current efficiency for Ce was enhanced after using the stirrer assembly due to an improved diffusion flux of Ce ions. Finally, cathode deposits were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction, which revealed that disrupted fine U dendrites were randomly scattered in the Cd bulk, and that the CeCd11 dendritic alloys were also damaged, leading to an increased atomic ratio of Ce to Cd at the Cd bottom.

Study on the electrodeposition of uranium in chloride molten salt

Pei Wu,Liqin Wang,Jinrui Wang,Junhan Luo,Yuexiang Lu,Xiaopeng Song,Jilian Liu,Yongquan Qin,Liudong Hou,Jing Ma

This study focuses on the recovery of UO2 from oxide spent fuel using electrodeposition. U3O8 was used as the initial material and dissolved in NaCl–2CsCl using NH4Cl at high temperatures by means of chlorination reaction. The electrolysis process was conducted using a three-electrode system to investigate the effects of cathode material and diameter, electrolysis temperature, electrolysis time, electrolysis voltage, and uranium concentration in the molten salt on the electrolysis reaction. By optimizing the electrolysis conditions, pure UO2 with a recovery efficiency of 97% was obtained, and the products were characterized using XRD, SEM-EDS, ICP-AES and XPS. It was found that within the scope of this experiment, increasing the cathode diameter, extending the electrolysis time, and increasing the reduction voltage appropriately all led to an improvement in the recovery efficiency of the electrolysis reaction, while other conditions had minimal effect on the reaction. Furthermore, doping of the electrolyte system was performed by adding La, Ce and Nd elements, while the removal of La showed good purification effects, with a maximum decontamination factor of 119. Furthermore, the system showed good purification effects for Nd, with a decontamination factor of 57.
