Constructing a 3D Ion Transport Channel-Based CNF Composite Film with an Intercalated Structure for Superior Performance Flexible Supercapacitors

Chunxia Yan,Fangyue Cheng,Jie Guan,Zhimao Li,Can Wang,Nannan Chen,Chunzu Cheng,Feijun Wang,Ziqiang Shao

The weak stiffness, huge thickness, and low specific capacitance of commonly utilized flexible supercapacitors hinder their great electrochemical performance. Learning from a biomimetic interface strategy, we design flexible film electrodes based on functional intercalated structures with excellent electrochemical properties and mechanical flexibility. A composite film with high strength and flexibility is created using graphene (reduced graphene oxide (rGO)) as the plane layer, layered double metal hydroxide (LDH) as the support layer, and cellulose nanofiber (CNF) as the connection agent and flexible agent. The interlayer height can be adjusted by the ion concentration. The highly interconnected network enables excellent electron and ion transport channels, facilitating rapid ion diffusion and redox reactions. Moreover, the high flexibility and mechanical properties of the film achieve multiple folding and bending. The CNF-rGO-NiCoLDH film electrode exhibits high capacitance performance (3620.5 mF cm–2 at 2 mA cm–2), excellent mechanical properties, and high flexibility. Notably, flexible all-solid assembled CNF-rGO-NiCoLDH//rGO has an extremely high area energy density of 53.5 mWh cm–2 at a power density of 1071.2 mW cm–2, along with cycling stability of 89.8% retention after 10 000 charge–discharge cycles. This work provides a perspective for designing high-performance energy storage materials for flexible electronics and wearable devices.

Mussel-inspired modification of Si-PDA-BNNS-OH@PDA-CNF composite films with excellent thermal conductivity and mechanical properties

Meng Ma,Dezhong Wang,Yan Liao,Sicheng Huang,Si Chen,Yanqin Shi,Huiwen He,Yulu Zhu,Xu Wang

Cellulose nanofibers (CNF) feature a three-dimensional nanofiber network, excellent mechanical properties, and abundant surface hydroxyl groups, facilitating the integration of boron nitride (BN) for fabricating flexible composite films with high thermal conductivity. However, achieving a balance between high thermal conductivity and strong mechanical strength at high BN loadings remains a formidable challenge. A mussel-inspired strategy is employed, in which BNNS-OH and CNF are coated with polydopamine (PDA) to improve their interfacial adhesion and compatibility. The PDA-BNNS-OH is then silanized with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane to acquire a positive charge, enabling its subsequent electrostatic adsorption onto PDA-CNF and assembly into a robust film. At a high filler loading of 60 wt%, the resultant composite film achieves an outstanding in-plane thermal conductivity of 18.9 W m −1  K −1 , a 1250% improvement relative to the pure CNF film. Remarkably, this marked enhancement is achieved without compromising the film's high electrical insulation capability, as evidenced by a volume resistivity exceeding 10 11  Ω m, while still delivering a substantial tensile strength of 49.5 MPa. These synergistic enhancements are attributed to the optimized interfacial bonding, which effectively reduces thermal resistance and suppresses phonon scattering. This interface design strategy offers a promising pathway for developing advanced thermal management materials.

Design and manufacturing of MgO/TO-CNF reinforced cellulose composite insulating papers with integrated mechanical, thermal, and aging performance

Wenchang Wei,Shangshi Huang,Xianhao Fan,Chuanyang Li,Jinliang He

With the continual increase in power density and ongoing miniaturization of electronic devices, the design and fabrication of insulating materials must simultaneously deliver high mechanical strength and excellent thermal conductivity to mitigate localized overheating and extend service life. In this study, a nano-MgO/Tempo-oxidized nanocellulose/cellulose (MgO/TO-CNF/cellulose) composite insulating paper was developed through the integration of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and experimental validation, resulting in synergistic enhancements in mechanical, thermal, and thermal-aging properties. MD simulations revealed that the incorporation of nanofillers significantly reduced the free volume fraction, strengthened intermolecular interactions, and suppressed dipole fluctuations via interfacial hydrogen-bond networks and confinement effects, thereby increasing the mechanical modulus and glass transition temperature while lowering the dielectric constant. Experimentally, the P6 composite paper exhibited the best comprehensive performance, with tensile strength, thermal conductivity, and power-frequency breakdown strength increased by 37.29%, 155.04%, and 32.5%, respectively, compared to pristine cellulose paper. Meanwhile, its dielectric loss and permittivity were markedly reduced, the volume resistivity reached 4.67 × 10 14 Ω·m, and both the degree of polymerization (DP) and electrical stability remained high after 120 days of thermal aging. These results indicate that the synergistic effect between TO-CNF and nano-MgO enables the construction of a multiscale reinforcing network and interfacial trap structures, providing a promising strategy for the design and fabrication of long-lived, high-performance bio-based insulating materials.

Synergistic interfacial engineering of CNF@MN@MX composite membranes for highly efficient and recyclable photocatalytic detoxification of Cr(VI)

Wensheng Lei,Minglin Sun,Wenliang Zhang,Liuan Liang,Zhezheng Ding,Xiao Tang,Haonan Dai,Xiaomin Liu,Pengfei Qi,Yan Wang

The efficient and sustainable removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from wastewater is a critical challenge in environmental engineering. Herein, an ultra-stable and recyclable cellulose nanofiber-based composite membrane (CNF@MN@MX) was fabricated via vacuum-assisted filtration by integrating cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), indium-based metal-organic frameworks (MIL-68(In)-NH₂, MN), and Ti₃C₂Tₓ MXene (MX). The CNFs provide a robust structural scaffold, MN imparts visible-light photoactivity, and MX establishes a highly conductive network that facilitates charge separation and transport. Comprehensive structural and photoelectrochemical characterizations confirmed strong interfacial coupling among the three components, leading to enhanced electron mobility and light-harvesting capacity. The optimized CNF@MN@MX membrane (mass ratio CNF:MN:MX = 1:1:1) exhibited a specific surface area of 22.65 m 2 /g, a maximum Cr(VI) adsorption capacity of 17.79 mg/g, and nearly complete Cr(VI) reduction under visible-light irradiation. Notably, the membrane retained over 70% removal efficiency after 20 regeneration cycles and maintained excellent performance in the presence of common anions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that MX incorporation lowered the Gibbs free energy of Cr(VI) reduction from −1.19 to −1.72 eV, confirming the thermodynamic advantage of MX-facilitated electron transfer. Furthermore, the CNF@MN@MX membrane efficiently purified simulated industrial effluents, yielding residual Cr(VI) concentrations below the regulatory limit. This work provides a robust design strategy for constructing conductive, photoactive, and recyclable membrane systems for advanced heavy-metal wastewater treatment.

Preparation of a SiO2@Carbon Sphere/SiO2−CNF Multilayer Self-standing Anode Prepared via an Alternate Electrospraying – Electrospinning Technique

Xuhui Wang,Na Sun,Xufeng Dong,Min Qi,Hao Huang

The development of flexible lithium-ion batteries (FLIBs) is restrained by traditional rigidity anodes. Carbon nanofiber (CNF) is a promising anode material owing to its high specific surface and superior ion transportation capability. However, the low amount of active material loaded on the CNFs and the poor stability during long cycling restrain their applications. Herein, a SiO 2 @carbon sphere/SiO 2 −CNF self-standing anode was prepared via alternate electrospraying-electrospinning. The SiO 2 content of the anode was increased through the electrospraying SiO 2 @carbon spheres layers, and the electrospun SiO 2 −CNFs as robust layers enhanced the stability of the anode. The self-standing anode exhibited 633 mA h g −1 in the initial cycle and maintained a 70% Coulomb efficiency for 1000 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g −1 , which could be applied in FLIB and other electrochemical storage devices.

Facile synthesis of hierarchical CNF/SnO2/Ni nanostructures via self-assembly process as anode materials for lithium ion batteries

Haitong Tang,Xinru Yu,Shi Jin,Fanling Meng,Yan Yan,Zhongmin gao

Hierarchical carbon nanofibre (CNF)/SnO2/Ni nanostructures of graphitized carbon nanofibres and SnO2 nanocrystallines and Ni nanocrystallines have been prepared via divalent tin–alginate assembly on polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibres, controlled pyrolysis and ball milling. Fabrication is implemented in three steps: (1) formation of a tin–alginate layer on PAN fibres by coating sodium alginate on PAN in a water medium followed by polycondensation in SnCl2 solution; (2) heat treatment at 450°C in a nitrogen atmosphere; (3) ball milling the mixture of CNF/SnO2 fibres and Ni powder. The CNF/SnO2/Ni nanocomposite exhibits good lithium ion storage capacity and cyclability, providing a facile and low-cost approach for the large-scale preparation of anode materials for lithium ion batteries.

A symmetric gradient structure enables robust CNF/FeCo/LM composite films with excellent electromagnetic interference shielding and electrical insulation

Song Yang,Maofei Du,Ying Zhang,Yuhan Wang,Ting Gu,Fei Liu

The exceptional performance of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials often stems from their high conductivity. However, EMI shielding materials with high electrical conductivity pose a risk of current leakage, which is an issue that cannot be ignored. Herein, a unique electrical insulation cellulose nanofiber/ferro cobalt/liquid metal (CNF/FeCo/LM) composite film with a symmetric gradient structure was fabricated using the vacuum-assisted filtration and cold compression techniques. In the CNF/FeCo/LM composite film, CNF/FeCo serves as the electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption layer and electrical insulation protective layer, CNF/FeCo/LM functions as the EMW transmission layer, and the LM acts as the middle EMI shielding enhancement layer. The prepared symmetric gradient CNF/FeCo/LM composite film exhibits a satisfactory EMI shielding effectiveness of 39.32 dB at a thickness of only 0.17 mm, with 20 wt% of LM and 20 wt% FeCo. This performance is attributed to the symmetric gradient composite film “absorption-weak reflection-strong reflection-reabsorption” mechanism. Furthermore, this composite film also exhibits an excellent in-plane thermal conductivity of 4.85 W m−1 K−1 and outstanding volume resistance of 5.58 × 1011 Ω cm. The CNF/FeCo/LM composite film achieves a tensile strength of 56.28 MPa, an elongation at break of 21.47%, and a toughness of 7.2 MJ m−3 due to the interaction between CNF and the LM, along with a zigzag fracture path that develops within the interlayer, which facilitates stress transfer and energy absorption. This work offers a viable approach to designing high EMI shielding materials with electrical insulation, which is crucial for promoting the use of CNF matrix composites in electronic packaging.

Influence of Cellulose Nanofibers on the Behavior of Pickering Emulsions. Part 1. Microscopy and Startup Flow Test

Shu-Ming Cui,Saud Hashmi,Wen-Qiang Li,Stephan Handschuh-Wang,Cheng-Tian Zhu,Shi-Chang Wang,Pian-Pian Yang,Yan-Fei Huang,Guang-Ming Zhu,Florian J. Stadler

The dispersibility of flexible polymer chains present at the emulsion’s interface between the dispersed and continuous phase has obvious effects on rheology and dielectric properties of the whole emulsion. Cellulose nanofiber (CNF)-based Pickering emulsions are good systems to research these properties with respect to their microscopic phase structure, dielectric, and rheological properties by using CNF as a water-dispersible Pickering emulsifier, liquid paraffin as an oil phase, and didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) as a cationic auxiliary surfactant. The CNF and DDAB contents were systematically varied while the water-to-paraffin oil ratio was kept constant to discern the influence of the Pickering emulsifiers. Polarized optical microscopic images reveal that the droplets tend to shrink at higher CNF content but grow bigger when increasing the DDAB content, which is proved by fluorescence analysis of the CNF dispersibility with varying DDAB content. The dielectric damping exhibits a minimum, whose value decreases with increasing DDAB and CNF content. Increasing the DDAB content promotes the solubilization of CNF in the aqueous phase, which will increase the overall viscosity and yield points. Similarly, a higher CNF content leads to a higher viscosity and yield point, but at high DDAB contents, the viscosity function exhibits an S-shape at intermediate CNF contents. To evaluate the results further, they were compared with CNF dispersions (without oil phase), which showed a surfactant effect slightly on maximum stress but strongly on yield stressτy, indicating that DDAB can promote the formation of a CNF network rather than the viscosity of the whole system. This paper provides information on how a systematical variation of the composition influences morphology and physico-chemical interactions as detected by broadband dielectric spectroscopy and rheological behavior. Keywords:cellulose nanofibers;CNF networks;physical entanglement;droplets clusters;startup flow

In situ synthesized SnSe nanorods in a SnOx@CNF membrane toward high-performance freestanding and binder-free lithium-ion batteries

Haocheng Yuan,Yuqiang Jin,Jinle Lan,Yuan Liu,Yunhua Yu,Xiaoping Yang

The poor reversibility of the first conversion reaction (SnO2 + 4Li+ + 4e− → Sn + 2Li2O) and the inferior electrical conductivity of the resulting Li2O make tin oxides not make full use of their lithium storage performance. In this study, various amounts of SnSe nanorods were in situ incorporated into SnOx@CNFs via electrospinning and thermal treatment processes. Binder-free SnSe/SnOx@CNFs exhibit a greatly enhanced lithium-ion storage performance due to their higher electrical conductivity, faster Li-ion diffusivity, and better reversible ability. The optimal SnSe/SnOx@CNFs exhibited a higher initial coulombic efficiency (86.5%) and better reversible capacity (740.7 mA h g−1 at 200 mA g−1 after 70 cycles) than pristine SnOx@CNFs (68.1%, 552 mA h g−1 at 200 mA g−1 after 70 cycles). Moreover, the high capacity of the SnSe/SnOx@CNF electrode can be maintained as high as 345 mA h g−1 at 1 A g−1 over 1000 cycles, demonstrating its robust long-term stability. This work provides new insights for designing high-performance tin-based anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

High-efficiency tunable microwave absorption in N–CNF@MXene@MoS2 aerogel with island-chain structured MXene and multiple heterogeneous interfaces

Xiaotong Sun,Ze Wu,Xiuli Tan,Youqiang Xing,Peng Huang,Bingjue Li,Lei Liu

Research on developing highly efficient microwave absorption (MA) absorbers is crucial for addressing electromagnetic (EM) pollution and advancing stealth technology. MXene, a new class of MA materials, have been widely studied . Nevertheless, MXene often faces challenges such as high self-stacking and excessive electrical conductivity, which lead to poor impedance matching. To overcome these problems, the unique manufacturing produces an overall homogeneous and locally aggregated MXene in the form of island chains, enhancing electrical conductivity and polarization loss while alleviating the self-stacking problem of MXene nanosheets. Further improvement is achieved by modifying the N–CNF@MXene aerogel with MoS 2 through atomic layer deposition (ALD). This modification resulted in a layered core-sheath structure featuring the N–CNF@MXene@MoS 2 aerogel (NCMMA) absorber. Importantly, this process preserved the intrinsic structure of the material while significantly enhancing its MA performance. NCMMA has a minimum reflection loss RL min of −78.32 dB (3.49 mm) with a fill factor of only 3.97 %. The effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) is 7.58 GHz (2.5 mm), covering the Ku band. The unique joint process design of hierarchical core-sheath in situ heterogeneous interfaces combined with the complex interpenetrating conductive network structure employed in this work is a strong candidate for MA materials for next-generation lightweight stealth coatings.

Facile and scalable fabrication of hydrophobic CNF-based composite films via michael addition for enhanced mechanical performance and water resistance

Lei Kang,Lanjie Shi,Lihuan Mo

Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) are promising renewable materials because high availability, strong mechanical performance, and biodegradability are provided. A major limitation is intrinsic hydrophilicity. Mechanical durability can also be insufficient. Use in moisture-resistant packaging and paper-based materials is therefore constrained. Conventional hydrophobization strategies for CNFs, especially PEI/fatty acid-based amine chemistry, are often plagued by complex workflows, poor scalability or an inevitable trade-off between hydrophobicity and mechanical properties. Herein, a facile, green and scalable route was developed to produce hydrophobic CNF/polyethyleneimine (PEI)/stearyl acrylate (SA) composite films. Dip-coating was coupled with a Michael addition reaction. Composite films were prepared by sequential dip-coating of CNF films in ethanolic PEI and SA solutions. Thermal ageing was then applied. Covalent crosslinking between PEI amino groups and SA unsaturated ester groups was thereby induced. Immobilization of the PEI/SA coating on the CNF surface was confirmed by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Film properties were evaluated by water contact angle (WCA) measurement, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), tensile testing, folding endurance measurement, and visible-light reflectance spectroscopy. A hydrophobic surface was obtained (WCA ≈ 118.6°) and mechanical performance was increased (tensile strength ≈ 104 MPa; folding endurance ≈ 816 cycles). Thermal stability was improved, and the maximum pyrolysis temperature was increased by 14 °C. Visible-light reflectance was reduced. These outcomes were achieved with a low PEI/SA coating loading of 1.01 ± 0.05 g m⁻², the composite films achieved simultaneous enhancement of multiple key properties without performance compromise. This strategy is simple, environmentally benign, and scalable. Key limitations of CNFs are addressed, and broad potential in moisture-resistant packaging and other functional paper-based materials is supported.

en This link goes to a English section zh This link goes to a Chinese section The rapid advancement of 5G communication technology has intensified electromagnetic pollution, creating an urgent demand for flexible multifunctional fabrics with efficient electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance. This study proposes a novel material-stacked construction strategy to fabricate multifunctional MXene/cellulose nanofiber/polyvinyl butyral (MXene/CNF/PVB) composite fabrics by sequentially depositing two-dimensional MXene nanosheets, CNF, and PVB onto the surface of linen fabric. Benefiting from the pretreatment with the cationic polyelectrolyte poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA), MXene nanosheets can adhere firmly to the fibers via electrostatic self-assembly and impart the fabric with excellent EMI shielding performance (47.87 dB). Meanwhile, optimizing the CNF concentration effectively enhances the mechanical strength of the fabric (45.27 MPa). The incorporation of PVB significantly improves the environmental stability and durability of the composite fabrics. As a result of the synergistic combination of high electrical conductivity and favorable infrared radiation suppression characteristics of MXene, the fabricated MXene/CNF/PVB composite-coated fabric achieved a mechanical strength of 49.68 MPa, an EMI SE of 39.31 dB, efficient Joule heating (62.5°C at 5 V), and effective infrared stealth, as evidenced by a low radiation temperature of 51.3°C against a 100°C background.
