Cadmium has been classified as a kind of human carcinogens, and has a strong mobility in the water environment and this can result in serious harm to human health and environmental safety. Here, a new selective and efficient extraction-recovery strategy for Cd purification is provided by using C 6 MimT/[C 6 Mim]PF 6 as the green extractant. Due to the high compatibility between C 6 MimT and [C 6 Mim]PF 6 , C 6 MimT-Cd was efficiently separated from the aqueous phase. When the concentration of Cd(II) was 1000 mg/L, the extraction rate could reached 99.9 %. By comparing [C 6 MIm]BF 4 with [C 6 MIm]PF 6 , the hydrophobicity restrained the ion exchange between cation and Cd and significantly reduced the loss of extractant. The extracted Cd(II) was separated in the form of precipitation after stripping. The extraction system of C 6 MimT/[C 6 Mim]PF 6 was stable after several extraction-stripping cycles. The extraction of Cd(II) by C 6 MimT/[C 6 Mim]PF 6 system mainly realized by forming a neutral and extractable cadmium complexes between Cd(II) and thione. Based on the natural complexation mechanism between metal and C 6 MImT, Cd exists as obvious competitive advantage in coordination with C 6 MimT compare to Pb, Zn, Mg, Cr, Fe. This work overcomes the problems of extractant loss and organic pollution caused by volatile or ion exchange, which can only reduce environmental hazards, but also promote the recovery of cadmium and other valuable resources.

Turning agricultural waste into effective remediation materials is a highly promising approach for reducing in-field crop burning and promoting affordable wastewater treatment . This comparative study aims to identify active adsorption sites for methylene blue (MB), crystal violet (CV), and cadmium (Cd) as model pollutants on wheat straw materials modified by a thermal partial-oxidation process. The optimal modification temperature was found to be 160–180 °C for MB and CV adsorption, which is much lower than that of Cd(II) at 220–240 °C. A strong linear correlation exits between total surface group concentrations and Cd(II) uptake, indicating that both acidic and basic functional groups are favourable adsorption sites of Cd(II). By contrast, basic groups generated at higher modification temperatures might have adverse effects on MB and CV adsorption. These results provided mechanistic insights and predictive approach into reuse of agricultural waste for environmental remediation.

Bismuth (Bi) nano-needle, nano-rod, nano-sheet, and nano-flower were synthesized using a facile one- step solvothermal method by adjusting the volume of ethylenediamine (EDA). The prepared Bi nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and their formation mechanism was discussed. Bi nano-particle modified carbon paste electrode (CPE) combined with differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) was developed for the determination of Cd (II). It was shown that Bi nano-flower modified electrode displayed the highest detection sensitivity on account of its particular three-dimensional structures. The stripping peak currents of Cd (II) at “bulk” and “drop coating” Bi nano-flower modified CPEs were compared with those of Bi film modified CPEs using “in-situ” and “out-situ” plating methods. The optimized detection conditions were 5% Bi nano-flower bulk modified CPE at pH 4.4, deposition potential of -1.2 V ( vs . AgCl/Ag) and deposition time of 200 s. The linear range, sensitivity and detection limit were 0.05 - 1 μM, 27.5 μA/μM, and 2.4 nM , respectively. The proposed Bi nano-flower bulk modified CPE was conveniently usable in the trace Cd (II) analysis for environmental water samples with the recovery rang of 91.1%-105.6%.

Little information is available regarding the kinetics, products, and pathways of simultaneous SMX degradation and Cd(II) immobilization from wastewater. In this study, a novel bacterium ( Achromobacter sp. L3) with SMX degradation and Cd(II) immobilization capabilities was isolated. The boundary conditions of SMX degradation were as follows: initial pH 6–8, temperature 25–30 °C, and SMX concentration 10–40 mg/L −1 . The boundary conditions of Cd(II) immobilization were as follows: initial pH 7–9, temperature 25–35 °C, and SMX concentration 10–30 mg/L −1 . The maximum SMX degradation and Cd(II) removal were 91.98% and 100%, respectively. The SMX degradation and Cd(II) immobilization data fitted well with the pseudo-first-order kinetic model, indicating that the two pollutants conform to the same degradation rule. Moreover, the microbial degradation , sediment adsorption, and intermediates identified in the experiments were used to explore the mechanisms of SMX and Cd(II) removal. These results indicate that microbial removal and sediment adsorption play equally important roles in Cd(II) immobilization; however, microbial degradation plays a decisive role in SMX degradation. Furthermore, the relationship between aerobic denitrification, SMX degradation, and Cd(II) immobilization was proposed. These results may provide valuable insights for treatment of wastewater polluted by antibiotics and heavy metals.

Soil mineral properties significantly influence the mobility of Cd(II) within the soil matrix. However, the limited understanding of how microbial metabolism affects mineral structure at the microscale poses challenges for in situ remediation. Here, we designed a model calcium-phosphate system in a urea-rich environment to explore the impact of different microbial activation levels on Cd(II) fixation at mineral interfaces. Findings indicate that bacteria affected the morphological structure of the minerals and the amount of carbonate incorporation (average 5.4 %), thereby enhancing Cd(II) immobilization capacity (up to 9.6 times). This process is influenced by the intensity of bacterial activation, as reflected in their urease activity. Extracellular substances secreted by bacteria are also essential for activating minerals, contributing to a sustained decrease in their surface potential. The introduction of activated minerals in potting experiments markedly stimulated the soil urease activity, promoting the enrichment of functional bacteria and facilitating Cd(II) passivation, thereby reducing Cd(II) uptake by vegetables. An extensive soil survey further corroborated a linkage between soil total phosphorus and urease activity, indirectly emphasizing the universality of phosphate mineral-urease microbial interactions and their critical role in the morphological transformation of Cd(II). Our findings highlight the functional dynamics of urease microorganisms in shaping soil mineral landscapes and regulating heavy metal mobility, with broad implications for soil microscale remediation strategies.

Gobbinsite (GOBZ) is rare zeolite with a disordered framework cation distribution, which is likely beneficial to Cd(II) fixation. This study developed a simple hydrothermal crystallization route to synthesize the novel GOBZ using natural halloysite nanotubes minerals (HNTS). In micropore and mesoporous of BET data analysis, a large number of HNTS microporous structures transformed into GOBZ mesoporous structures, which could greatly facilitate the adsorption ability of GOBZ. The XPS and FTIR exhibited the mesoporous coordination and the interaction of different hydroxyl functional groups, is the main adsorption mechanism to strengthen the Cd(II) fixation capacity. Liu isotherms described well of the adsorption of Cd(II), indicating the process was heterogeneous and multilayers simultaneously. General order kinetics assumed that the adsorption occur accompanied by a chemical reaction on GOBZ. Reusability of GOBZ show that it has good recycling performance and application value in Cd(II) adsorption. The TEM and XRD showed that the adsorption of Cd(II) affected the elemental composition, surface morphology and internal structure of GOBZ, which contributed to in-situ formation of phillipsite-Ca, otavite, garronite and gmelinite-Na. Above all, hydrothermal crystallization (GOBZ technology) can provide viable options for the removal of toxic metal pollution, showing the prospect of clay minerals in the removal.

The accumulation of heavy metal cadmium (Cd) in the food chain poses a serious threat to human health, necessitating the development of rapid, on-site, and portable detection methods for Cd (II). Herein, we developed a smartphone-based electrochemical sensor for portable determination of Cd (II) in vegetables using a bismuth metal–organic framework (Bi-MOF) nanocomposite. Prismatic rod-like Bi-MOF was hydrothermally synthesized using trimesic acid as organic ligands, and subsequently, carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (COOH-MWCNTs) were incorporated to form Bi-MOF nanocomposite network. The smartphone-based electrochemical sensor enables rapid, sensitive, and portable detection of Cd (II) in vegetable samples using Bi-MOF/COOH-MWCNTs-modified screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE). A comparative analysis of traditional electrochemical sensors coupled with desktop computer for linear voltametric responses for Cd (II) in the range of 0.2–500 ng/mL with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.07 ng/mL using Bi-MOF/COOH-MWCNTs-modified glassy carbon electrodes (GCE), the portable sensor demonstrated good linear range in 0.7–350 ng/mL with a LOD of 0.22 ng/mL. This work introduces a novel approach for on-site and portable detection of Cd (II) in agricultural products.

Novel Sn-Pb hybrid nanoparticle decorated mesoporous carbon (MPC) was successfully prepared on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and used for the anodic stripping measurements of Cd(II) via square wave Voltammetry. In the presence of MPC, the properties of Sn-Pb were dramatically improved including the ability of electron transfer, particle size and hydrophilicity, which played a significant role in achieving more preferable analytical performances of Cd(II) with Sn-Pb based sensor. After all the experimental parameters involved were carefully optimized, the proposed Sn-Pb/MPC based sensor was applied to the stripping determination of Cd(II), showing the best electrochemical behaviors by comparison with Sn, Pb and Sn-Pb modified electrodes. The synergic effect between Sn-Pb and MPC was believed to be the major factor leading to such improved electrochemical properties of Sn-Pb/MPC based sensor for Cd(II) analysis. In the concentration range of 0–140 μg L−1, the linear analytical curve for Cd(II) was achieved with correlation coefficient and detection limit calculated to be 0.9996 and 0.36 μg L−1 (S/N = 3), respectively. By using the standard addition method, Cd(II) ion in river samples was successfully determined with satisfactory recoveries higher than 100%. These results suggest that the proposed method can be applied as a simple, efficient alternative to monitor the heavy metals in water samples, compared with ICP based techniques.

Lignin derived from papermaking black liquor is an abundant and economical biochar precursor, however, its direct pyrolysis products often exhibit limited adsorption capacity for heavy metal ions due to their inherent poor pore structure. In order to improve the adsorption ability of lignin-based biochar, an electrochemical adsorption strategy was used to significantly enhance its removal performance for heavy metal in this study. Using alkali lignin and sodium lignosulfonate as precursors, biochar electrodes were prepared via direct pyrolysis. Their physical and chemical properties were comprehensively compared, and their selective electrochemical adsorption efficiency for Cd 2+ in high-salt wastewater was systematically evaluated. The effect of the applied voltage was investigated, and 1.2 V was determined as the optimal operating voltage within the tested range. Under this condition, alkali lignin biochar (AL-BC) exhibited a maximum electrochemical adsorption capacity of 409.3 mg g −1 , significantly exceeding the 82.8 mg g −1 observed for sodium lignosulfonate biochar (LS-BC). The electrochemical process increased the adsorption capacity of AL-BC and LS-BC by about 6.95 and 3.53 times, respectively. Quantitative analysis of electrochemical adsorption mechanisms revealed that the selective capture of Cd 2+ on AL-BC was primarily governed by chemical adsorption mechanisms. Surface precipitation was the dominant contributor (67.1 %), followed by ion exchange (26.2 %), whereas EDLs adsorption (4.8 %) and surface complexation (2.0 %) played minor roles. This study revealed the potential of lignin biochar as a highly efficient and selective electrochemical adsorbent for heavy metal ions in wastewater, providing a new strategy for the high-value utilization of lignin.

Natural macromolecule adsorbing materials are alternatives for remediation of heavy metals’ polluted waters. In this study, sodium alginate composite gel (SACL) was synthesized from sodium alginate (SA), polyethylene glycol oxide (PEO), and nanomaterials to remove wastewater Cu (II) and Cd (II). The adsorption efficiency of SACL was analysed in relation to the contact time, initial concentrations of metal ions, temperature, adsorbent dosage, and solution pH. Three models, i.e., kinetic model, isothermal adsorption model, and thermodynamic model, were used to fit the experimental data. Our results showed that the highest removal rates of Cu (II) and Cd (II) from wastewater were 96.8% and 78%, respectively, under the condition of the best liquid-solid ratio of 12.5 ml·g −1 , and the contact time of 180 min (25°C). Overall, the SACL adsorption of Cu (II) and Cd (II) was spontaneous. The adsorption kinetics and the isothermal adsorption were fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic equation and Langmuir equation, respectively. Combined with SEM-EDS and FTIR analysis, results suggested that SACL adsorbs wastewater Cu (II) and Cd (II) mainly through chemical reaction on its surface area. Altogether, this work concludes on SACL as an efficient and ecofriendly adsorbent for wastewater Cu (II) and Cd (II).

Grape vine shoots were utilized as the biomass feedstock and pyrolyzed under temperatures ranging in 300°C–600°C with nitrogen atmosphere to produce biochars. The surface properties of the as-obtained biochars were characterized, followed with the careful investigation of the adsorption of lead and cadmium removal in aqueous environments. All as-prepared biochars had weak alkali characteristics and large amount of mineral species, which can greatly improve the adsorption performance. Outstanding storing capacities of 250.81, 327.31, 377.36 mg g –1 for Cd 2+ and 156.12, 237.25, 258.86 mg g –1 for Pb 2+ were exhibited by biochar pyrolyzed under 300°C, 450°C and 600°C, respectively. The adsorption equilibrium could be reached about 7 h and the suitable solution pH should be above 3. Both Langmuir and Freundlich models fitted the data well and precipitation was found to be the dominant mechanism for the adsorption of both metals. Overall, grape vine shoots are confirmed to be a promising feedstock to produce biochar sorbents of heavy metals in wastewater with excellent performance, economic cost, and easy process.

This study aims to improve the removal efficiency of heavy metal ions from wastewater. We utilized agricultural residues derived from Camellia oleifera shell and combined them with zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) precursors for synergistic modification. By introducing active components such as Zn and Co in situ using chemical reagents, followed by pyrolysis, co-carbonization, and KOH activation treatments, we prepared nine types of functionalized biochar (BCX-T). Their structural characteristics and adsorption performance toward Cu(II) and Cd(II) were systematically characterized. The results showed that BC8-500 exhibited an adsorption capacity of 31.61 mg/g for Cu(II), a 2.1-fold increase compared to unmodified biochar; BC9-500 exhibited an adsorption capacity of 111.43 mg/g for Cd(II), a 6.4-fold increase. The adsorption process was primarily driven by chemical adsorption and multilayer adsorption. The removal of Cu(II) by BC8-500 was mainly achieved through complexation, whereas the removal of Cd(II) by BC9-500 was primarily achieved through CdCO3 precipitation. This study provides a theoretical basis for the effective utilization of agricultural and forestry residues, as well as for the mitigation and management of environmental pollution.
