Clay minerals and iron (hydr)oxides are important geosorbents in controlling the migration of heavy metal cations in the environment. Despite the widespread occurrence of clay minerals/iron (hydr)oxides composites, their complex mutual effects on the fate of heavy metal cations are not well recognized. In this work, we investigated the effect of clay minerals on the redistribution of Cd(II) during the phase transformation of ferrihydrite containing coprecipitated Cd(II) (Cd-Fh). Three systems were considered: i.e., Cd-Fh, Cd-Fh/kaolinite composite, and Cd-Fh/montmorillonite composite. Our results showed that the transformation of Fh into goethite and hematite caused the release of Cd(II), while the presence of kaolinite and montmorillonite inhibited the phase transformation of Fh and the release of Cd(II), with montmorillonite being more effective in these process. Multiple factors contributed to the reduced release of Cd(II), including the retarded transformation of Fh, the buffering of solution pH, and the re-adsorption of the released Cd(II). Our findings show that clay minerals have multiple effects in reducing the release of heavy metal cations from Fh during its transformation process, which sheds new light on understanding the critical roles of nanominerals in modulating the migration and bioavailability of heavy metal cations in the environment.

In accordance with a new international standard set by the Codex Alimentarius Commission for cadmium (Cd) content in rice grain, Japan must perform large-scale remediation of paddy fields polluted with low to moderate levels of Cd. Phytoextraction using hyperaccumulating wild plants has been proposed as a low-cost, environmentally friendly restoration technology. However, because of difficulties with sowing, weed and disease control, and harvesting, hyperaccumulators may not be suitable for large-scale phytoextraction in polluted paddy fields. Here, we demonstrated phytoextraction using Indica-type rice cultivars capable of accumulating Cd at high levels. Phytoextraction with the Indica rice Chokoukoku grown for 2 years without irrigation after drainage removed 883 g Cd ha−1, reduced the total soil Cd content by 38%, and reduced the grain Cd content in subsequently grown Japonica food rice by 47% without decreasing yield. The results suggest that phytoextraction with Chokoukoku can remove Cd from paddy fields polluted with low to moderate levels of Cd and reduce the grain Cd concentration of Japonica food rice cultivars to below the Codex standard within a reasonable time frame. This approach will help reduce the risk of Cd contamination of rice from paddy fields.

To improve the overall sensory evaluation of regular coffee, a mixture of β-CD/flavour CD powder was prepared by a freeze-drying method. Cyclodextrin inclusion complexes consist of eight compounds that are naturally present in coffee, specifically: 2,5-dimethylpyrazine, benzaldehyde, citral, linalool, limonene, phenethyl acetate, furfural, and ethyl acetate. These eight compounds naturally occur in coffee, making them safer than using other compounds. Moreover, these eight compounds are the primary active ingredients in coffee, significantly influencing its flavour profile. Therefore, choosing to complex these eight compounds with cyclodextrins can effectively enhance the taste of the coffee. XRD, FT-IR, and SDE-GC-FID were presented to study the formation of inclusion CD powder, the storage stability, chemical composition changes, and safety. Results show that by the cyclodextrin method of freeze-drying, the CD powder showed a stable encapsulated structure and increased stability of flavour compounds. Based on the coffee aroma analysis results, prepared CD powder can enhance the coffee’s aroma score by 3.0–4.0 points and increase the flavour score by 2.1–3.5 points, and it can achieve preservation for a minimum of 181 days at 25 °C. Furthermore, under the requirements of the China national standard for additives, the mixture of β-CD/flavour CD powder was used for the cup testing with four regular coffees to obtain improved coffees. With the full score is 10, improved coffees could score extra 3.0–4.0 points on aroma and 2.1–3.5 on flavour compared to regular coffee. In addition, the CD powder also improves the quality of the coffee in terms of aftertaste, body, and sweetness. Overall, β-CD/flavour CD powders provide several advantages over the currently popular coffee bean processing methods, including improved reproducibility, enhanced controllability, and increased flexibility, while prioritizing safety. And it should be explored further with appropriate compounds given its potential for coffee aroma modulation.

The purification and water resource circulation utilization of cadmium-containing leachate is a key link in the field application of microbial remediation in Cd-polluted soil. In this study, through a simulation experiment of microbial remediation of Cd-polluted paddy soil , the feasibility of the purification and recycling process of wastewater derived from microbial remediation of Cd-polluted soil was explored. The results of the microbial mobilization and removal experiment showed that the concentrations of Cd, N, P, and K in the leachate were 88.51 μg/L, 38.06, 0.53, and 98.87 mg/L, respectively. The leachate also contained a large number of microbial resources , indicating that it had high recovery values. To recycle this wastewater, activated carbon (C), humic acid (H), and self-assembled monolayers on mesoporous supports (SAMMS; S) were used as adsorbents. The results showed that the co-existing cations in the leachate had a major influence on the adsorption of Cd. In the ternary system of Fe, Al, and Cd, the removal efficiency of Cd increased to 91.2% when the S dosage was increased to 5‰, and the sorption of Cd occurred after Fe and Al. However, C and H exhibited poor adsorption performances. The isotherm models further showed that the maximum adsorption capacities of S, H, and C were 13.96, 6.41 and 2.94 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption kinetics of S showed that adsorption was a rapid process, and the C–H and O–Si–O of S were the key functional groups. The pH of the leachate significantly affected the adsorption efficiency of Cd. Finally, the purified leachate was successfully applied to microbial cultivation and soil remediation . Overall, the reclamation of Cd-containing wastewater can not only dampen the impacts of water shortages, but also achieve the purposes of Cd removal and resource recovery to lower costs by approximately 1166–3499 yuan per mu.

The sulfonated covalent organic frameworks (COF@SO 3 H) have been synthesized by a simple one-step solvothermal reaction and used to adsorb Cd 2+ , Co 2+ , and Cr 3+ metal ions from aqueous solution. The structure, composition and stability of as-prepared material were confirmed by FT-IR, PXRD, BET and TGA, and a fiber bundle-like COF@SO 3 H could be observed in the SEM and TEM images. The adsorption behaviors of Cd 2+ , Co 2+ , and Cr 3+ onto COF@SO 3 H were studied through batch adsorption experiments, and the obtained data were analyzed using various models. The adsorption process of the three ions can be better described by the Langmuir isotherm and the pseudo-second-order kinetics than other models tested, and the maximum adsorption capacities for Cd 2+ , Co 2+ and Cr 3+ at 298 K are 81.97, 77.52, and 105.26 mg g −1 , respectively. The thermodynamic parameters indicate that the adsorption of Cd 2+ onto COF@SO 3 H is spontaneous, which is more favorable than Co 2+ and Cr 3+ . Moreover, the adsorbed metal ions can be easily eluted by nitric acid or EDTA solution, and the COF@SO 3 H can be reused for more than 5 adsorption-elution cycles without obvious collapsing in structure and reducing in adsorption capacity. All the results suggested that the COF@SO 3 H could be used to the adsorption and removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater.

Heavy-metal-tolerant bacteria provide a sustainable, eco-friendly approach to remediate cadmium (Cd) contaminated soils, and elucidating their tolerance mechanisms is key for designing effective bio-remediation strategies. This study integrated whole-genome sequencing, untargeted metabolomics and multi-phenotypic analyses to reveal the Cd tolerance mechanisms and soil remediation effects of three plant-growth-promoting bacteria: Rhizobium sp. WW22, Burkholderia sp. WW13 and Pseudomonas sp. WW2. Results showed that three strains achieved Cd adsorption efficiencies of 60.27 %-99.56 % in 0.3–100 mg L-1 Cd solutions, with amino, carboxyl, hydroxyl, and amide groups on cell surfaces as major binding sites. They have evolved gene clusters related to metal transport/efflux and oxidative stress response, which synergistically maintain metabolic homeostasis under Cd stress. Among them, strain WW13 exhibited stronger Cd tolerance due to abundant unique gene clusters for antioxidant defense, siderophore synthesis, and putrescine metabolism. Notably, three strains showed convergent metabolic responses under Cd stress, with secretions (predominantly organic oxygen compounds, lipids/lipid-like molecules, benzenoids, and organoheterocyclic compounds) that significantly increased environmental pH. Key common upregulated secretions (itaconic acid, cis/trans-aconitic acid) increased soil pH by 0.01–0.32 units and reduced the proportion of exchangeable Cd by 2.22 %-9.19 % within 10 days. Pot experiments further confirmed that strains indirectly reduced Cd bioavailability by increasing soil pH, enriching hydroxyl/carboxyl/amino groups, regulating dissolved organic carbon/nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen, activities of β-glucosidase and N-acetyl-β- D -glucosaminidase. By day 14, the proportion of exchangeable Cd was reduced by 4.09 %-5.86 %. This study revealed multi-pathway Cd tolerance mechanisms in bacteria and their roles in soil Cd immobilization, providing theoretical basis and efficient strains for bioremediation of Cd-contaminated soils.

The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate hollow sodium chloride microspheres with enhanced salinity perception as a strategy to reduce overall salt intake in foods. This experimental systematically evaluated the water content, hygroscopicity, particle size distribution, conductivity, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and electron tongue of hollow salt microspheres prepared from hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD), soluble soybean polysaccharide (SSPS), maltodextrin (MD), gum arabic (GA), and β-glucan (β-glucan). The results showed that there were significant differences in the characteristics of hollow sodium chloride microspheres prepared by different carriers. The salt microspheres prepared with HP-β-CD as the carrier exhibited low water content (1.89 %), anti-hygroscopicity (1.67 g/100 g), and fast solubility. The conductivity test results showed that the release rate of sodium ions in the salt microspheres prepared with HP-β-CD was nearly six times higher than that of ordinary sodium chloride, which could rapidly evoke the perception of saltiness. EDS analysis further confirmed that the salt microspheres prepared with HP-β-CD carrier had a higher sodium chloride content on the surface (26.25 %), thus contributing to enhancing salty taste perception. In addition, the salt microspheres prepared with soybean-soluble polysaccharide as the carrier showed a perfectly spherical hollow structure, and the caking property was lower than that of the other salt microspheres. The results of the electronic tongue analysis showed that the salt microsphere solution prepared using soybean-soluble polysaccharide had a stronger salty taste perception ability. In summary, the hollow salt microspheres prepared using HP-β-CD and SSPS showed outstanding advantages in salt taste perception properties. In the later stage, the compound ratio between the carriers will be studied, which provides a new technical reference for the salt reduction strategy of the food industry.

Background Chemiluminescence (CL) bioassay is one of the most advanced and used detection method in clinical diagnosis and biomedical research because of the advantages of low background, easy operation, and wide-field imaging without a light source or microscope. The luminol/hydrogen peroxide/horseradish peroxidase (luminol/H 2 O 2 /HRP) system is the most popular CL system, but its application in high-throughput imaging detection is challenged due to its low luminescence efficiency and flash-type emission which is difficult in ensuring the reproducibility and consistency of detection results. Results We reported a glow-type CL system of luminol@CD/H 2 O 2 /HRP by using a supramolecular enhancer of cyclodextrin (CD). This luminol@CD/H 2 O 2 /HRP system exhibited a luminescence lifetime of 41 min for sensitive and accurate imaging analysis. The long-lasting CL emission was attributed to the formation of a 1:1 host–guest complex between luminol and CD, which could stabilize the emitter and effectively reduce nonradiative relaxation. The formation of luminol@CD complex was determined through NMR experiments and theoretical analysis. Under optimum conditions, the luminol@CD/H 2 O 2 /HRP system showed higher sensitivity and much better precision than classical luminol/H 2 O 2 /HRP system for imaging detection of HRP. Especially, this glow-type luminol@CD/H 2 O 2 /HRP system realized CL imaging of microwell arrays on microfluidic chips. In addition, the luminol@CD/H 2 O 2 /HRP system was successfully applied for point-of-care detection of 17 β- estradiol based on a competitive mechanism of host–guest recognition. Significance An efficient CL system is crucial for obtaining reproducible and consistent results for accurate detection. Our luminol@CD/H 2 O 2 /HRP system emitted strong and persistent luminescence, resulting in reliability and efficiency at both CL macroscopic and microscopic imaging detection. We expected the luminol@CD/H 2 O 2 /HRP CL system to be applied in various detection fields.

A novel nanoadsorbent for the removal of heavy metal ions is reported. Cotton was first hydrolyzed to obtain cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). CNCs were then chemically modified with succinic anhydride to obtain SCNCs. The sodic nanoadsorbent (NaSCNCs) was further prepared by treatment of SCNCs with saturated NaHCO 3 aqueous solution. Batch experiments were carried out with SCNCs and NaSCNCs for the removal of Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ . The effects of contact time, pH, initial adsorption concentration, coexisting ions and the regeneration performance were investigated. Kinetic studies showed that the adsorption equilibrium time of Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ was reached within 150 min on SCNCs and 5 min on NaSCNCs. The adsorption capacities of Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ on SCNCs and NaSCNCs increased with increasing pH. The adsorption isotherm was well fitted by the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption capacities of SCNCs and NaSCNCs for Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ were 367.6 mg/g, 259.7 mg/g and 465.1 mg/g, 344.8 mg/g, respectively. SCNCs and NaSCNCs showed high selectivity and interference resistance from coexisting ions for the adsorption of Pb 2+ . NaSCNCs could be efficiently regenerated with a mild saturated NaCl solution with no loss of capacity after two recycles. The adsorption mechanisms of SCNCs and NaSCNCs were discussed.

This study investigated the efficacy of GLDA (C9H9NNa4O8) for the remediation of moderately Cd-contaminated soil (total Cd, 0.47 mg/kg). A 50-day pot experiment was carried out with T. patula (Tagetes patula L.) subjected to five GLDA treatments (0, 0.25, 0.5, 1 and 2 mmol/kg). The GLDA doses were administered in two equal parts, with a 15-day time interval between them. Our results indicated that GLDA treatments significantly increased the Cd content in the aboveground and root of T. patula, as well as soil pH and soil DTPA-Cd content compared with the control treatment (CK) (P < 0.05). Under 2 mmol/kg, an average reduction of 9.85% occurred in soil Cd content compared with the CK. Furthermore, GLDA enhanced the transformation of residual and organic-bound Cd into exchangeable and iron-manganese oxide forms. At concentrations of 0 and 0.25 mmol/kg, GLDA increased the richness of soil bacterial communities, whereas inhibition occurred at higher application rates (1 and 2 mmol/kg). The Chao1 and Shannon indices of 1 and 0.5 mmol/kg significantly increased by 29.9% and 7.98%, respectively, compared with the CK (P < 0.05). Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Chloroflexia, and Myxococcota were the dominant bacterial phyla in Cd remediation by T. patula induced by GLDA, reflecting their high tolerance to Cd contamination. Altogether, this study elucidates how GLDA enhances Cd remediation through its impacts on soil Cd mobility/fractionation and soil microbial composition, presenting a novel and sustainable/ecofriendly phytoremediation strategy for moderately Cd-contaminated soils.

The preparation of coordination polymers with good room temperature phosphorescence is the focus of current research. In this paper, zinc and cadmium were used as metal ions and 2,3-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (H 2 L = 2,3-pyridinedicarboxylic acid) was used as organic ligands to successfully synthesize Cd (II) homometallic [CdL]·H 2 O and Zn(II)Cd(II) heterometallic [ZnCdL 2 ]·DMF·5H 2 O coordination polymers microstructures. In addition, morphology, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), elemental analyses, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and their luminescence properties were studied. Cd-CP is a micron-sized spherical structure, while Zn/Cd-CP is a flower-like structure formed by the accumulation of sheets. The results show that Cd(II) homo- and Zn(II)Cd(II) heterometallic coordination polymers have quantum yields of 10.05% and 8.54%, respectively. It is worth noting that the lifetime of Cd-CP is 124.62 ms, while the lifetime of Zn/Cd-CP is significantly extended to 363.09 ms after doping with metal ion Zn 2+ . The phosphorescent lifetime of coordination polymers was improved by the heterometallic doping strategy, which provided a new idea and method for the preparation of coordination polymers with long-lived room temperature phosphorescent properties. In addition, the two coordination polymers exhibited blue and cyan fluorescence at 365 nm UV light, respectively, and a green afterglow of about 2 s could be observed with the naked eye when the UV lamp was turned off.

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) has been a promising treatment technology of heavy metal-enriched hyperaccumulator biomass to produce superior hydrochar adsorbent for contamination removal from the wastewater. However, a high amount of heavy metal in derived hydrochar limits its further application. In this study, the effect of reaction temperature (180–270 ℃) and medium pH during HTC on heavy metal contents, speciation and leaching risk of hydrochar from the hyperaccumulator biomass Sedum alfredii Hance was investigated to assess its environmental risk. HTC at a low reaction temperature and acid addition facilitated the removal of Zn/Cd/Pb from the solid phase, meanwhile the addition of acid favored the immobilization of Zn/Cd/Pb and lowered the potential leaching risk of Zn/Cd/Pb. Hydrochar prepared from HTC at 240 °C and pH = 2 had lower heavy metal content and lower releasing risk, followed by KOH modification to obtain high adsorption performance. The modified hydrohcar (KSAB) were characterized by SEM, XRD, BET, Boehm titration and FT-IR, and showed that the surface specific surface area and pore structure were optimized and OFGs of hydrochar were improved significantly after KOH treatment. Adsorption experiments showed that the Cd(II) adsorption process onto KSAB well accorded with pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherms. The maximum Cd(II) adsorption capacity of KSAB was 25.69 mg/g, which was 17 times compared to that of pristine hydrochar. Microstructure characteristics and mechanism analysis further suggested that electrostatic interactions, surface complexation, cation-π and ion exchange were the main Cd(II) removal mechanisms of KOH-modified hydrochar. Therefore, hydrochar derived from hyperaccumulator biomass can be used as a highly efficient absorbent to remove Cd(II) from wastewater after KOH modification.
