Electrostatic self-assembly fabrication of multiscale xfMWNT/Co/C@TNF-EP composites with enhanced mechanical and EMI shielding properties

Mei Yin,Jiamei Luo,Minqiang Jiang,Yong Liu,Youwei Zhang,Hui Zhang,Jianyong Yu

The widespread use of highly integrated smart electronic devices has led to serious electromagnetic pollution, making electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials a crucial solution for controlling electromagnetic radiation. This study utilizes electrostatic self-assembly between negatively charged Co/C@TNF felts and positively charged cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) functionalized multiwall carbon nanotubes (fMWNT) to construct a unique three-dimensional (3D) structure within epoxy resin (EP). Due to electrostatic interactions, fMWNT were uniformly loaded on Co/C@TNF felts. These well-dispersed fMWNT serve as bridges, connecting adjacent Co/C@TNF felts and EP, forming a more efficient conductive network, thereby obtaining composites with enhanced mechanical properties and superior EMI shielding effectiveness (EMI SE). The optimized EMI SE of xfMWNT/Co/C@TNF-EP composites reached 54.4 dB, which was 19.3% higher than that of pure Co/C@TNF-EP. Additionally, the flexural properties of the xfMWNT/Co/C@TNF-EP composites were also markedly enhanced, with a flexural strength of 164.40 MPa.

Pressure-triggered dynamically tunable TiO2/CNFs@Co/C aerogel derived from MXene/PAN@ZIF-67 for broadband microwave absorption

Zhao Meng,Haibo Yang,Yongzhen Ma,Yan Cheng,Yanlong Ma,Binglong Zheng,Hongwei Zhou,Ying Lin

In increasingly complex electromagnetic environments, developing high-performance and dynamically tunable electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption materials is essential. This study designed a pressure-responsive TiO2/CNFs@Co/C elastic aerogel for efficient EMW absorption. A 3D interpenetrating structure consisting of Ti3C2Tx MXene-derived TiO2 nanosheets, magnetic Co/C frameworks, and carbon nanofibers was constructed via electrospinning combined with in situ synthesis. This 3D interpenetrating structure constructs abundant heterogeneous interfaces, thereby enhancing interfacial polarization. The results demonstrate that the composite achieves an exceptionally broad effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 8.17 GHz at a thickness of 2.7 mm, with only 10 wt% filler loading. Additionally, the composite exhibits strong environmental tolerance, including hydrophobicity, stretchability, and thermal insulation. Notably, the alginate-induced elastic aerogels enable dynamic tuning from 6.4 to 18 GHz under compressive strains of 0% to 66%. This work designs dynamically tunable, high-performance EMW absorbers through component optimization and interface engineering, providing a promising strategy for the preparation of next-generation multifunctional intelligent EMW absorbers.

A Robust, Multifunctional MOF-Derived Co@C/rGO/GPTMS-Modified Superhydrophilic Fabric Coating for High-Efficiency Electromagnetic Wave Absorption

Yuxin Xu,Jiahao Zhu,Yi Zhang,Zhong Zhang,Qingwei Li,Dan Liu,Haitao Niu,Hua Zhou

Personal protective textiles showing high-performance electromagnetic wave absorption (EWA) along with multiple functions demonstrate considerable application prospects in daily life. Herein, a single-step, environmentally friendly, water-based fabrication strategy is developed to produce a durable and highly efficient EWA coating on PET fabrics, simultaneously integrating antibacterial, antistatic, and high-performance water/sweat-wicking properties. This multifunctional coating is realized through the synergistic interaction of its coating constituents including the incorporation of Co@C nanoparticles (NPs) derived from Co-based zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-67), the in situ reduction of graphene oxide (GO) facilitated by fatty acid methyl ester ethoxylate sodium sulfonate (FMES), and the 3-glycidyloxypropyl triethoxysilane (GPTMS)-mediated cross-linking. The resulting Co@C/rGO/GPTMS-coated PET fabric exhibits excellent moisture-wicking and water adsorption capacity. Benefiting from the combined effects of conduction loss, interfacial polarization loss, and a hierarchical surface structure, it demonstrates outstanding EWA performance with an RLmin of −56.5 dB and EABmax covering the entire X-band. The incorporation of Co@C and rGO within the coating matrix imparts robust antibacterial and antistatic properties, achieving an antibacterial rate of over 99% against both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, along with a significant reduction in static voltage to 130 V and a short half-life of merely 0.01 s.

Unique carbon nanofiber@ Co/C aerogel derived bacterial cellulose embedded zeolitic imidazolate frameworks for high-performance electromagnetic interference shielding

Yang Fei,Mei Liang,Tao Zhou,Yang Chen,Huawei Zou

Recently, lightweight and highly efficient electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding composites are crucial but changing for the development of modern electronics and telecommunication. Here, a novel polyhedral Co/C particle embedded carbon nanofiber (CNF@Co/C) aerogels were synthesized via pyrolysis of bacterial cellulose wired zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-67 (ZIF-67) aerogel under argon. The flexible CNF@Co/C aerogels exhibit a high EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) is approaching 56.07 dB at a density of only 0.023 g cm −3 in the X band , and the average absorption coefficient is as high as 0.79, indicating 79% of electromagnetic (EM) waves are absorbed in shielding process. The remarkable performance results from the three-dimensional (3D) CNF-threaded porous structure with interconnected network and the magnetic Co/C particle strung by CNF, which contribute to a conduction loss and optimal impedance matching along with multiple polarization and strong magnetic loss. This work paves a promising way for the new generation of electronic device with lightweight and efficient EMI shielding.

Rational construction of hierarchical Co@C@NPC nanocomposites derived from bimetallic hybrid ZIFs/biomass for boosting the microwave absorption

Yan Wang,Xiaochuang Di,Zhao Lu,Xinming Wu

Nowadays, electromagnetic (EM) radiation poses severe environmental pollution and harm to civilian and military life. To this end, it is urgent to synthesize high-efficiency microwave absorbers in terms of composition and structural design. Herein, we reported a unique hybrid nanostructure with Co particles embedded in hollow carbon polyhedron by a series of synthetic steps including carbonization and pyrolysis . Further, the nanoporous carbon (NPC) derived from wheat flour is coated onto the surface of Co@C polyhedrons, forming a special hierarchical structure (Co@C@NPC), which demonstrates outstanding microwave absorption properties due to the hierarchical porous structure, enhanced interfacial polarization, conduction loss, multi-reflection and matched impedance. Typically, with a 10 wt% filler content, the maximum R L of Co@C@NPC reaches −57.2 dB at 9.6 GHz and the corresponding effective bandwidth is 5.7 GHz (from 7.5 to 13.2 GHz) with an absorber thickness of 3 mm. Besides, the filler loading of 10 wt% is much lower than other reported bio-derived absorbers. In short, the hybrid zeolitic imidazolate frameworks offer a novel idea for constructing hollow carbon skeletons and introducing biomass carbon as a green, low cost and renewable material that enhances the dielectric loss and the synergistic effect between permittivity and permeability.

Janus Co@C/NCNT photothermal membrane with multiple optical absorption for highly efficient solar water evaporation and wastewater purification

Jing Jiang,Huiling Jiang,Ying Xu,Mei Chen,Lunhong Ai

Solar-driven interfacial water evaporation has emerged as a promising approach for green and sustainable production of clean water to alleviate freshwater shortage, especially in remote and arid regions. However, limited photothermal conversion efficiency and poor water transport remain challenges to achieve highly efficient solar water evaporation. In this study, we propose a facile strategy to construct a novel Janus photothermal membrane by combining highly hydrophobic nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes encapsulating cobalt nanoparticles (Co@C/NCNT) with a hydrophilic nylon membrane, which enables simultaneous realization of asymmetric surface wettability and multiple optical absorption pathways. The as-fabricated Janus Co@C/NCNT evaporator achieves a high solar water evaporation rate of 1.55 kg m −2 h −1 and an evaporation efficiency of 89.7% under one sun irradiation, which are well maintained after 10 cycles. Meanwhile, the Janus evaporator can be used for practical purification of various simulated wastewater, such as dyeing sewage and heavy metal wastewater, with high rejection efficiency and long-term stability. This Janus evaporator design provides an efficient, low-cost solar water evaporation system for potential water purification .

Solvent-controlled synthesis of bimetallic ZIF-coated tetra-needle ZnO whiskers toward hollow Co/C derivatives with enhanced microwave absorption

Cai Haopeng,Chen Yangdie,Feng Chaochao,Lin Zhenqin

Aimed to address the poor impedance matching of pure tetra-needle ZnO (T-ZnO) as well as to optimise the structure of the wave-absorbing material, this research focused on constructing a bimetallic Zn/Co-ZIF-coated T-ZnO core–shell structure with T-ZnO as a self-sacrificial template. In this work, T-ZnO@Zn/Co-ZIF composites were synthesized by optimizing shell uniformity via modulating DMF/H 2 O solvent ratios (3:1 to 1:1 v/v) and reaction durations (6/24 h). By further pyrolysis, the formation of hollow structures of the derivatives was investigated and the electromagnetic wave absorption performance of the derived materials were evaluated. Optimal core–shell uniformity was achieved at DMF/H 2 O = 3:1 with 24 h reaction time (DH31-24). Pyrolysis at 800 °C (PDH31-24-800) produced hollow Co/C derivatives with complete ZnO volatilization. This material exhibited superior microwave absorption: minimum RL of − 16.40 dB at 14.00 GHz (3.00 mm thickness) and an effective bandwidth (RL ≤  − 10 dB) of 4.48 GHz (11.12–15.60 GHz).

Enhanced activity and stability in microwave steam reforming of tar with TiO2-coated zeolitic imidazole framework-67 derived Co/C

Yuechi Che,Tianxiao Yu,Ying Bai,Ziwei Xue,Beibei Yan,Xuemei Fu,Jian Li,Guanyi Chen

Microwave steam reforming using carbon-based catalyst presents a promising solution for tar elimination in biomass gasification, crucial for renewable syngas production toward heating, electricity, and value-added chemicals. However, activated-steam-induced catalyst deactivation remains challenging. Herein, a ZIF-67-derived core-shell Co/C-TiO 2 catalyst was engineered via tailored TiO 2 hydrophilicity and structural protection. Catalytic performance exhibited a volcano-type trend versus TiO 2 shell thickness. The optimal catalyst (Co/C-T2) achieves a 96.62 % toluene conversion rate and a 72.17 % carbon conversion rate at 550 °C, sustaining >87.61 % efficiency over 6 h. Structural characterizations revealed the core-shell architecture transformed carbon-supported Co(111) structure into anatase TiO 2 (101)-stabilized Co 3 O 4 (311) configuration, significantly enhancing surface basicity and oxygen species density. DFT-based molecular dynamics simulations further elucidated the mechanism by demonstrating reduced adsorption and dissociation energy barriers for H 2 O molecules, which facilitate steam activation in the reforming process. However, excessive TiO 2 coating induces diffusion limitations at the reactant/metal active site interface, coupled with coking-induced pore occlusion, consequently triggering significant deterioration in catalytic activity and stability. This work establishes a facile modification paradigm for developing microwave-responsive carbon catalysts while providing fundamental insights into the structure-activity relationships of core-shell systems in heterogeneous catalysis. These findings offer practical guidance for designing advanced catalysts in sustainable energy conversion applications.

Mechanistic insights into the remarkable catalytic activity of nanosized Co@C composites for hydrogen desorption from the LiBH4–2LiNH2 system

Yi Zhang,Zhenyun Lan,Ni Jian,Zhuanghe Ren,Jianjiang Hu,Mingxia Gao,Hongge Pan,Yunhao Lu,Yongfeng Liu

In this work, we demonstrate a first attempt at understanding the catalytic mechanism of nanosized Co in reducing the dehydrogenation temperature of the Li–B–N–H hydrogen storage system by experimental observation and theoretical calculation. A nanosized Co@C composite (Co particles <10 nm) is successfully synthesized by casting a furfuryl alcohol-filled, Co-based metal–organic framework, MOF-74(Co), at 700 °C. Adding small quantities of the prepared nanosized Co@C composite significantly reduces the dehydrogenation temperature of the LiBH4–2LiNH2 system. The 5 wt% Co@C-containing sample releases approximately 10.0 wt% hydrogen at 130–230 °C with a peak temperature of 210 °C, which is reduced by 125 °C from that of the pristine sample. During hydrogen desorption, nanosized Co remains in the metallic state and only works as a catalyst to reduce the kinetic barriers of hydrogen release from the LiBH4–2LiNH2 system. Ab initio calculations reveal that the presence of a Co catalyst induces a redistribution of charge, which not only weakens the chemical H–B bonding but also enhances the electrostatic interactions between Hδ+ in the NH2 groups and Hδ− in the BH4 groups, consequently reducing the energy barriers for the formation of H2 molecules. This explains the low-temperature dehydrogenation behaviour of the Co-catalysed Li–B–N–H systems.

Controlled-etching assisted fabrication of yolk–shell Co/C nanocubes with dual loss mechanisms to improve electromagnetic wave absorption abilities

Yizhe Wang,Jian Xu,Peng He,Wenjun Ma,Xiaoyun Liu,Jun Qian,Peiyuan Zuo,Jinjin Zeng,Qixin Zhuang

Rational design and fabrication of yolk–shell structure is evolving as an effective approach to improve electromagnetic wave absorption performance by enhancing the impedance matching, multiple reflections and scatterings, as well as promoting interfacial polarizations. However, due to the complexity of synthesis, it is still challenging to develop an absorber with yolk–shell structures intergrating two types of losses (dielectric and magnetic loss) simultaneously in the yolk and shell. Herein, novel yolk–shell Co/C nanocubes were successfully constructed via a controlled-etching with tannic acid followed by direct pyrolysis, in which the magnetic component Co and dielectric component C were uniformly distributed in the yolk as well as the shell. It was found that the pyrolysis temperature can adjust the graphitization degree of carbon and the crystallinity of metal Co, which effectively regulated the electromagnetic properties of the YS-Co/C nanocubes. The reflection loss was − 57.34 dB by increasing the pyrolysis temperature to 700 ℃ under a frequency of 11.76 GHz. The corresponding effective absorption bandwidth was 5.6 GHz (9.52–15.12 GHz) at a thickness of only 2.5 mm. The findings obtained from this study lay a solid foundation for novel design of yolk–shell absorbers applied in EMW absorption.

Sustainable synthesis of Co/C nanocomposites from biomass for advanced MgH2-Based hydrogen storage: Insights into phase transformation and catalytic mechanisms

Quanhui Hou,Jinhui Wang,Yang Zhou,Peng Jiang,Yuting Li,Zhao Ding,Qianyang Wang,Yonglian Xiong

Developing sustainable catalysts for magnesium-based hydrogen storage systems is crucial for advancing clean energy technologies. Here, we report a facile synthesis strategy for Co/C nanocomposites using renewable sugarcane bagasse as a carbon precursor, achieving uniform dispersion of Co nanoparticles (<200 nm) within a hierarchically porous carbon matrix. The optimized MgH 2 +10 wt% Co/C composite exhibits dramatically enhanced hydrogen storage performance, with a reduction in dehydrogenation onset temperature from 330.4 °C to 209.4 °C and a 26 % decrease in apparent activation energy. The composite achieves rapid hydrogen uptake (6.2 wt% within 10 min at 150 °C) and excellent cycling stability (6.28 wt% after 10 cycles at 300 °C). Mechanistic studies reveal that the superior performance originates from the synergistic effects between the in-situ formed CoMg 2 /CoMg 2 H 5 phases acting as "hydrogen pumps" and the porous carbon framework providing efficient pathways for mass/heat transfer. This work not only demonstrates an effective approach for developing high-performance hydrogen storage materials from renewable resources but also provides fundamental insights into the rational design of sustainable energy materials.

Air-induced dual-cavity yolk–shell architecture in lightweight hollow Fe3O4@air@Co/C nanocomposites enabling high-efficiency electromagnetic wave absorption

Yizhe Wang,Siyue Li,Ye Yuan,Qixin Zhuang,Xiaoyun Liu,Peiyuan Zuo

The rational design of yolk–shell structured materials with integrated dielectric–magnetic synergy has emerged as a critical strategy for developing lightweight and high-performance electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers. Comparing to the conventional yolk–shell structures that typically rely on single cavity configuration, the air-induced dual-cavity yolk–shell structures offer both lightweight absorber design and substantial enhancements in interfacial polarization over wide frequency range. To this end, this study proposes a novel “coating-protected etching-high temperature carbonization” strategy to successfully construct an air-induced dual-cavity yolk–shell hollow Fe₃O₄@air@Co/C composite absorber. The unique nanostructure possesses two independent cavities: one within the inner hollow Fe₃O₄ core, and another between the inner Fe₃O₄ core and the Co/C shell. The dual cavities not only significantly reduce the material density but also optimize the impedance matching. Importantly, the synergistic effects of the air-induced dual-cavity interfaces (Fe₃O₄-air and Co/C-air) amplify multi-interfacial polarization and improve the absorption ability via combined magnetic and dielectric loss mechanisms. Experimental results demonstrate that the optimized absorber achieves a remarkable reflection loss of –67.21 dB and a maximum effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.12 GHz (12.08–17.20 GHz) at an ultra-thin thickness of 2.0 mm and a low filler loading of 20 wt%. Collectively, our findings provide a new design approach for constructing high-efficiency, lightweight EMW absorption materials.
