Developing an efficient catalyst for hydrogen (H 2 ) generation from hydrolysis of ammonia borane (AB) to significantly improve the activity for the hydrogen generation from AB is important for its practical application. Herein, we report a novel hybrid nanostructure composed of uniformly dispersed Co@Co 2 P core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in N-doped carbon nanotube polyhedron (Co@Co 2 P/N–CNP) through a carbonization-phosphidation strategy derived from ZIF-67. Benefiting from the electronic effect of P doping, high dispersibility and strong interfacial interaction between Co@Co 2 P and N-CNTs, the Co@Co 2 P/N–CNP catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic performance towards the hydrolysis of AB for hydrogen generation, affording a high TOF value of 18.4 mol H 2 mol metal −1 min −1 at the first cycle. This work provides a promising lead for the design of efficient heterogeneous catalysts towards convenient H 2 generation from hydrogen-rich substrates in the close future.

The rational design of heterostructured electrocatalysts with efficient charge transfer pathways is crucial for advancing sustainable water-splitting technology. In this work, a bimetallic Co 2 P/Fe 2 P heterojunction catalyst is successfully synthesized on nickel foam (NF) through a hydrothermal method followed by controlled phosphorization. The heterointerface between Co 2 P and Fe 2 P induces a strong built-in electric field (BEF) due to their distinct Fermi level alignment, as confirmed by Mott-Schottky analysis and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM). This BEF gives rise to electron-deficient Co regions and electron-enriched Fe regions near the heterointerface, which is expected to modulate the local electronic structure and facilitate interfacial charge transfer, thereby benefiting the overall HER/OER kinetics. The as-prepared Co 2 P/Fe 2 P@NF exhibits exceptional bifunctional activity in alkaline media, achieving low overpotentials of 109 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 165 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at 20 mA cm −2 , with Tafel slopes of 54.8 mV dec −1 and 31.5 mV dec −1 , respectively. A two-electrode electrolyzer assembled with Co 2 P/Fe 2 P@NF as both anode and cathode requires only 1.50 V to deliver 20 mA cm −2 , surpassing most reported non-noble metal catalysts. Systematic characterizations (XPS, TEM, EIS) reveal that the hierarchical nanoplate structure with abundant heterointerfaces provides a high electrochemical surface area (17.4 mF cm −2 ) and facilitates electrolyte penetration. Moreover, the catalyst exhibits outstanding long-term durability, retaining at least 98% of its initial performance after 20 h of continuous operation at 20 mA cm −2 under both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) conditions. This work highlights the pivotal role of interfacial BEF engineering in developing high-performance electrocatalysts for practical water-splitting applications.

The development of rechargeable zinc–air batteries is critically hindered by the sluggish kinetics of both the oxygen reduction and the oxygen evolution reaction. For advancing zinc–air battery technology. The effective design of bifunctional catalysts that efficiently facilitate both the oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions is crucial for advancing the development of zinc–air batteries. Overcoming the intrinsic sluggish kinetics of oxygen electrocatalysis remains a fundamental challenge that limits the commercial viability of rechargeable zinc–air batteries. Herein, the work proposes a rational strategy to construct a three-phase heterogeneous interface: Co7Fe3/Co/Co2P@NPCNT was successfully synthesized by a two-step pyrolysis using CoFe–FF as the precursor and dicyandiamide and sodium hypophosphite as carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus sources, respectively. The half-wave potential (E1/2) of Co7Fe3/Co/Co2P@NPCNT is 0.85 V, and the overpotential (η10) is 295 mV at 10 mA cm–2. Comparative evaluation confirms that the catalytic activity of Co7Fe3/Co/Co2P@NPCNT is superior to those of Pt/C and RuO2. The catalytic activity of Co7Fe3/Co/Co2P@NPCNT is superior to that of Pt/C and RuO2. Meanwhile, the zinc–air batteries assembled by Co7Fe3/Co/Co2P@NPCNT have an open-circuit voltage of 1.45 V, a peak power density of 130 mW cm–2, and a large specific capacity. The structure of carbon nanotubes not only facilitates the dispersion of metal nanoparticles but also increases the active sites. Moreover, the corrosion of nanoparticles by alkaline electrolyte is reduced, and the stability is enhanced. The good bifunctional catalytic activity of Co7Fe3/Co/Co2P@NPCNT can be attributed to the synergistic effect of electron transfer between the three-phase interfaces and the multicomponent active centers (alloy, phosphide, N, P-codoped carbon nanotubes). In this work, the three-phase heterogeneous interface is constructed reasonably. This unique structure improves the catalytic activity and provides a new idea for the design of bifunctional catalysts.

Developing high-performance hydrogen generation/storage materials and technologies is an essential step for applying hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells under the background of carbon peak and carbon neutralization strategy. Ammonia borane (NH 3 BH 3 , AB) features a high volumetric and gravimetric density of hydrogen, showing great potential for chemical hydrogen storage. Exploring low-cost and high-efficiency catalysts is an essential prerequisite for hydrogen generation through AB hydrolysis under mild conditions. Herein, with rationally designing Ru/Co metal-organic framework (RuCo-MOF), a series of Co 2 P nanoparticles doping with low-content Ru embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon supported on graphene oxide (Ru-Co 2 P@N-C/GO) were synthesized via a one-pot phosphorization process. Benefiting from the unique structure and the electronic structure regulation of Ru, Ru-Co 2 P@N-C/GO exhibits excellent catalytic performance with an original turnover frequency (TOF) of 347.3 mol H2 mol Ru –1 min –1 and an excellent specific rate ( r B ) of 83,929 mL min –1 g Ru –1 toward AB hydrolysis. This work opens a new avenue toward developing effective and economic catalysts for AB hydrolysis.

Enhancing the exposure of active sites and optimizing the electronic structure of the catalysts are indispensable for efficient catalyst design, yet remains challenging in the renewable energy field. Herein, a sequential pyrolyzing and phosphating approach for a well-designed GO/CoTPP gel precursor has been explored to prepare a Co-based carbon catalyst containing single-atom Co-N x and hollow Co 2 P active species (Co 2 P/Co-N-C) for multifunctional electrocatalytic reactions. Kirkendall effect occurring during the template-free one-pot phosphating approach induced the formation of the hollow Co 2 P structure in the catalyst, simultaneously optimizing the electron structure and allowing the active sites to be exposed to a greater extent. DFT calculations demonstrated that the Co 2 P and Co-N x structures enable Co 2 P/Co-N-C to have a suitable d-band center depending on the electron transfer from Co 2 P to Co-N x , which enhances the adsorption of O* and the dissociation of OH* in oxygen electrode reactions, thereby facilitates catalytic reactions. As a result, the Co 2 P/Co-N-C exhibits excellent trifunctional activity with a half-wave potential of 0.89 V in alkaline for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), overpotentials of 330 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and 190 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively, which are among the best results reported to date for Co-containing carbon-based catalysts. Furthermore, the flexible Zinc-air battery with Co 2 P/Co-N-C electrodes also demonstrates a high open circuit voltage of 1.35 V, which is applied to build the self-powered device for water splitting continuously. Our work provides a facile strategy to prepare high-performance trifunctional catalysts by morphology/structure control of metal-based NPs on carbon-based materials.

The sluggish kinetic of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) severely hampers the commercial application of electrochemical water splitting, promoting the urgent exploration of high-efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts. Heteroatom doping and structure engineering have been identified as the most effective strategies to boost the catalytic activity of electrocatalysts. Herein, Mn doping and hollow structure were integrated in the design of Co-based transition metal phosphide catalyst to prepare Mn-CoP/Co 2 P nanotubes (denoted as Mn-CP NTs) by a facile template-free method. Confirmed by characterization analysis, the introduced Mn species were in high dispersion in the regular CoP/Co 2 P hollow tubular framework. Such a favorable design in composition and structure effectively boosted the catalytic activity of Mn-CP NTs toward electrochemical water splitting. The Mn-CP NTs showed superior HER and OER activity demonstrated by the low overpotentials of 82 mV ( vs HER) and 309 mV ( vs OER) at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , as well as the satisfactory durability. When used as both cathode and anode in electrolyzer for overall water splitting, only a low cell voltage of 1.67 V was required for the Mn-CP NTs to drive 10 mA cm −2 , accompanied with excellent stability confirmed by over 50 h test.

Hydrogen is the mainstream future energy source because of its high energy density and environmentally-friendly properties. In this study, Fe-Co2P/NPC materials were prepared by the wet chemical synthesis method, in which Fe-Co2P nanowires were wrapped by the N, P co-doped carbon layers (NPC) under aging and phosphorylation strategies. When Fe-Co2P/NPC/NF was subjected to hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the overpotential was only 73 mV and 217 mV to reach the current density of 10 mA cm−2, respectively. When the cathode and anode were both Fe-Co2P/NPC/NF, a current density of 10 mA cm−2was achieved with only 1.56 V. This work provides a new idea for the design and preparation of non-precious metal-based transition metal phosphide catalysts. Keywords:transition metal phosphide;water splitting;hydrogen evolution;oxygen evolution;N, P co-doped carbon

Reasonable construction of efficient bifunctional catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) counts a great deal for the development and application of rechargeable zinc-air batteries. Herein, we prepared nano-sized heterostructural particles of cobalt phosphides (CoP/Co 2 P) confined in N, P-codoped cubic through simple grinding combined with vapor deposition method using the Co formic-acid framework (Co-FF) as the precursor. Benefit from the synergistic effect between the coexistence of abundant active sites including Co sites derived the CoP/Co 2 P nanoparticles, graphitic-N, pyridinic-N species and regulation of heterojunction interface electrons, the CoP/Co 2 P@NPC-800 catalyst exhibited excellent bifunctional catalytic activity toward ORR and OER, slightly better than commercial 20 % Pt/C. The liquid zinc-air battery demonstrates a specific capacity of 720.1 mAh g −1 and outstanding stability exceeds 250 h, comparable to 20 % Pt/C. Moreover, the flexible zinc-air battery can maintain good stability under different angles of bending. This study has a certain theoretical guiding significance for the rational regulation of the phase of cobalt-based phosphide to fabricate bifunctional oxygen catalysts for metal-air battery applications.

Carbon-based composites with nano dispersed transition metal sulfides (TMS)/transition metal phosphides (TMP) are successfully prepared using a bio-assisted strategy, where non-ferrous metals in leaves are converted to TMS and those in stems are converted to TMP. Carbon films obtained from the conversion of naturalized bioreactor (plant cells) membranes not only successfully achieve the nano-materialization of TMS/TMP, but also ensure good conductivity and can effectively accommodate the volume changes during cycling and maintain structural integrity. Besides, nonferrous metals will also optimize the dense structure of leaf-derived carbon during calcination, exposing more active sites and ion transport channels. Benefiting from these, the as-prepared carbon-based cobalt sulfide composite (CdL Co) exhibits excellent electrochemical performance as an anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), including high reversible capacity, outstanding cycling stability, and good rate performance. Especially after 1, 000 cycles under 1 A g −1 , a high reversible capacity of 441 mAh g −1 can still be maintained. Besides, the dual-conversion achieved by this bio-assisted strategy can also be used to explore the preparation of nanocomposites for other applications, with universality.

To address mass transport limitations in carbon nanofiber membrane electrodes for overall water splitting, a self-supporting nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanofiber membrane embedded with Co/Co2P heterojunctions (Co/Co2P-NCNFs-H) was fabricated via continuous coaxial electrospinning. The architecture features uniform hollow channels (200–250 nm diameter, 30–50 nm wall thickness) and a high specific surface area (254 m2g−1), as confirmed by SEM, TEM, and BET analysis. The Co/Co2P heterojunction was uniformly dispersed on nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanofibers through electrospinning, leverages interfacial electronic synergy to accelerate charge transfer and optimize the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Electrochemical tests demonstrated exceptional catalytic activity, achieving current densities of 100 mA cm−2at ultralow overpotentials of 405.6 mV (OER) and 247.9 mV (HER) in 1.0 M KOH—surpassing most reported transition metal catalysts for both half-reactions. Moreover, the electrode exhibited robust long-term stability, maintaining performance for nearly 20 h at 0.6 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) (OER) and over 250 h at −1.5 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) (HER), attributed to the mechanical integrity of the hollow architecture and strong metal–carbon interactions. This work demonstrates that integrating hollow nanostructures (enhanced mass transport) and heterojunction engineering (optimized electronic configurations) creates a scalable strategy for designing efficient bifunctional catalysts, offering significant promise for sustainable hydrogen production via water electrolysis.

Due to the bonding force between the surface Co atom and the adsorbed intermediate are so strong that intermediate cannot desorb from Co atom, the oxygen reduction reaction of Co 2 P based electrocatalyst cannot satisfy the commercialized application of the Zn-air battery. In this work, a GO-induced assembly strategy was designed to construct cobalt phosphide (Co 2 P) nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped carbon nanotubes (Co 2 P@NCNTs). The experimental results show that adding graphene oxide (GO) content has a significant impact on the formation of well-defined Co 2 P@NCNTs nanotubes structures and the exaltation of the graphitization degree. Benefitting from the synergistic effect between N-doped nanotubes and Co 2 P, the Co 2 P@NCNTs-15 electrocatalysts exhibited better catalytic performance, a more positive onset potential (0.90 V vs RHE) and half-wave potential (0.82 V vs RHE), maximum limiting diffusion current density (5.5 mA cm −2 ) and Tafel slope only 73 mV dec −1 . The potential gap (ΔE) between E j=10 of OER and ORR half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of Co 2 P@NCNTs-15 is only 0.93 V, which lower than Pt/C electrocatalyst (1.15 V). More importantly, the Co 2 P@NCNTs-15-based rechargeable Zn-air battery performed the highest peak power density (159.7 mW cm −2 ), specific capacity (792.6 mAh g −1 at 10 mA cm −2 ) and remarkable cycle stability. This method also offers a high yield and cost-effective synthesis strategy for preparing the other transition metal phosphide electrocatalysts.

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) via water electrolysis has gained immense research attention. Seawater electrolysis provides great opportunities for sustainable energy production, but is extremely challenging. Transition metal phosphides are promising candidate electrocatalysts. Herein, we prepared a novel Fe–Co 2 P bundle of nanorods (BNRs) for catalyzing the HER in seawater electrolysis and over the entire pH range. Cobalt phosphides with different crystal phases and morphologies were obtained by varying the Fe doping amount. The Co:Fe molar ratio of 1:0.5 was found to be optimum. The Fe doping improved the HER performance of Co 2 P over the entire pH range by providing favorable electronic properties and morphology, lattice distortion, and special coordination environment. The Fe-Co 2 P BNRs showed higher catalytic activity than 20% Pt/C in seawater at high potentials. The density functional theory calculations revealed that the Fe doping reduced the hydrogen binding strength of Co 2 P to efficiently accelerate the HER kinetics and produce a favorable charge density. This study provides valuable insights into the design and development of high-efficiency HER catalysts for large-scale seawater electrolysis.
