Currently, hydrogen production through water electrolysis stands out as one of the most promising methods. However, the efficiency of hydrogen production is limited by the anodic oxygen evolution reaction , which involves a four-electron transfer process. Therefore, the development of an efficient and durable anode catalyst is important to reduce energy consumption and increase the hydrogen production rate. Herein, the Mo-doped Ni 3 S 2 nanopillar structures were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal process on nickel foam (NF). Subsequently, nanosheets of CoFe-layered double hydroxides (LDH) thin films were deposited to obtain the CoFe-LDH/Mo-Ni 3 S 2 /NF catalyst. Physical characterization results revealed polycrystalline properties of the CoFe LDH nanosheets , while a non-homogeneous interface was also formed with Mo-doped Ni 3 S 2 nanopillars. The contact angle verified the excellent hydrophilicity , which allowed the rapid release of oxygen bubbles. In terms of electrocatalysis , the catalyst exhibited an overpotential of only 227 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 and demonstrated remarkable current density retention after 100 h. The catalyst was also characterized by good retention of the current density at 10 mA/cm 2 . This work provided the strategy for designing efficient, inexpensive and durable catalysts.

To incorporate magnetic metals into carbon materials is a proven method to achieve highly efficient electromagnetic wave absorption (EMA) capabilities. In this study, cobalt (Co)-iron (Fe) alloys doped phenolic-based carbon aerogels (CoFe-CAs) with an impressive core-shell structure were prepared by using 1,2-epoxypropane as catalyst via a simplified sol-gel method. The effect of annealing temperature on the EMA properties of CoFe-CAs was explored and the X-ray diffractometer, Raman spectrometer, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, N 2 isothermal adsorption-desorption curves and vector network analyzer were used to acquire their physical and chemical properties. The results show that the CoFe-CAs (S-1050) with an impressive core-shell structure possess outstanding EMA performance, the minimum reflection-loss value reaches -58.46 dB (matching thickness: 2.1 mm, frequency: 12.9 GHz) while the maximum effective-absorption-bandwidth displays 5.7 GHz (frequency range: 12.13–17.83 GHz, matching thickness: 1.84 mm), the minimum radar-cross-section value displays -40.02 dB m 2 in a range of 0° to 360°. The excellent EMA performance of CoFe-CAs can be mainly attributed to the high conduction loss derived from their graphitized carbon, the polarization loss resulted from their impressive core-shell structure, high specific surface area and rich pore structure, and the impedance matching characteristics optimized by the good synergy of dielectric loss and magnetic loss. This study provides a new catalyst and a simplified method for the preparation of magnetic metal doped phenolic-based CAs with excellent EMA properties.

Electromagnetic wave absorption (EMWA) materials with qualities such as low cost, thin thickness, and high efficiency are of tremendous value in addressing the challenges posed by EMW pollution. Herein, we have successfully synthesized a nanoflower-like composite from the Prussian blue analog KCoFe(CN) 6 through a combination of hydrothermal and post-annealing methods. Subsequently, we prepared the hierarchical composite CoFe-K/GC@MnO 2 @MXene (CMM) by electrostatic self-assembly with few-layered Ti 3 C 2 T x nanosheets . Their chemical compositions, microstructures, and EMWA performances were thoroughly investigated. The CMM composite demonstrated outstanding EMWA performance with an impressive minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) value of −53.0 dB at 1.68 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) value of 4.0 GHz with an ultrathin-matching thickness of only 1.55 mm. The exceptional EMWA performance of CMM can be attributed to the increased conductive loss, enhanced interfacial polarization, and optimized impedance matching. Simulated radar cross-section (RCS) plots confirm the outstanding RSC reduction achieved by the CMM absorber coating. Furthermore, the EAB can be extended to 12.12 GHz by designing a macro 3D quadrangular frustum pyramid structural model for the absorber. The practical application potential of CMM was also enhanced by its good heat dissipation capability, which was demonstrated in real-time using an infrared thermal imager. This work provides a novel insight into developing efficient and multifunctional EMWA materials for practical applications.

CoFe-based catalysts have shown excellent activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), with the oxidation states of the active sites playing a crucial role in determining catalytic performance. However, how to effectively increase the oxidation state of these active sites remains a key challenge. In this work, a facile treatment with NaBH4solution was employed to modulate the surface state of CoFeOxHycatalysts, inducing an enhanced OER activity. The overpotential at 10 mA cm−2for the NaBH4-treated CoFe catalyst was reduced to 270 mV, indicating improved OER activity. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results reveal that NaBH4treatment induced a phase reconstruction of the CoFe oxalate framework, a critical step in enhancing its catalytic properties. The strong reducing ability of NaBH4strengthened the Co-Fe interaction, allowing the retention of low-valence Co species while facilitating the formation of high-valence Fe sites. This dual modulation of Co and Fe oxidation states significantly accelerated charge transfer kinetics, ultimately boosting OER performance. These findings highlight the importance of improving the oxidation states of active sites in CoFe-based catalysts, providing insights for developing efficient catalysts for electrochemical water splitting.

Designing efficient non-noble metal multifunctional electrocatalysts with hierarchical nanostructures is paramount for advancing renewable energy technologies. In this study, we present a method that utilizes Fe2O3 and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as coprecursors for high-temperature carbonization, resulting in a composite structure of CoFe alloy nanoparticles, nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets, and nanotubes. The unique hierarchical architecture of the synthesized CoFe@NC-0.25 provides a high specific surface area and facilitates synergistic interactions among CoFe alloy active sites, resulting in exceptional trifunctional catalytic performance. Specifically, it exhibits a half-wave potential of 0.86 V for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and overpotentials of 352 and 244 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm–2 for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively. In addition, all three reactions showed excellent stability in a 10 h endurance test. This work underscores the critical role of these structural attributes in enhancing catalytic efficiency, presenting a promising strategy for the development of efficient multifunctional non-noble metal electrocatalysts.

Recently, increasingly severe electromagnetic radiation has caused harm to precision equipment and human health, which requires the development of effective electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption materials. These materials require both a strong absorption and a broad bandwidth at low filling rates and small thicknesses. To meet this requirement we have constructed a cobaltiron/carbon@polypyrrole (CoFe/C@PPy) composite by a two-step synthesis process. The first is the fabrication of magnetic CoFe/C fibers, followed by their coating with a PPy layer with a controlled thickness. This combination of materials results in a magnetic loss from CoFe/C and a dielectric loss from PPy which improves both impedance matching and EMW dissipation. An optimized material has a PPy layer with a thickness of 2.0 mm and a loading of 10% and has a minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of −45.6 dB at 14.64 GHz, and the corresponding effective absorption bandwidth is 5.12 GHz. Furthermore, CST Studio simulations and far-field radar cross-section (RCS) analysis validate its practical use, showing a notable RCS reduction of up to 37.5 dBm 2 for a perfect electric conductor.

Electrocatalytic efficiency and stability have emerged as critical issues in the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) of direct ethanol fuel cells. In this paper, Pd/Co1Fe3–LDH/NF as an electrocatalyst for EOR was prepared by a two-step synthetic strategy. Metal–oxygen bonds formed between Pd nanoparticles and Co1Fe3–LDH/NF guaranteed structural stability and adequate surface-active site exposure. More importantly, the charge transfer of the formed Pd–O–Co(Fe) bridge could effectively modulate the electrical structure of hybrids, improving the facilitated absorption of OH– radicals and oxidation of COads. Benefiting from the interfacial interaction, exposed active sites, and structural stability, the observed specific activity for Pd/Co1Fe3–LDH/NF (17.46 mA cm–2) was 97 and 73 times higher than those of commercial Pd/C (20%) (0.18 mA cm–2) and Pt/C (20%) (0.24 mA cm–2), respectively. Besides, the jf/jr ratio representing the resistance to catalyst poisoning was 1.92 in the Pd/Co1Fe3–LDH/NF catalytic system. These results provide insights into optimizing the electronic interaction between metals and the support of electrocatalysts for EOR.

Ce–O v coupling enables site-differentiated mixed AEM/LOM pathways. • CeCoFe-LDH delivers 230 m V at 10 mA cm −2 and a low Tafel slope of 27.9 mV dec −1 . • Controlled lattice oxygen redox suppresses Co/Fe dissolution and deep surface reconstruction. • CeCoFe-LDH operates stably for 1500 h at 500 mA cm −2 under industrial conditions. • Anion-exchange-membrane water electrolysis reaches 1.71 V at 1 A cm −2 for 220 h at 60 °C. Achieving both high OER activity and long-term stability at industrial current densities remains a key challenge for green hydrogen production by water electrolysis. Herein, we report a CeCoFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH) catalyst designed to balance lattice oxygen activation with structural stability under industrial-current-density OER conditions. The synergistic interaction between doped Ce and synthesis-induced oxygen vacancies (O v ) preferentially activates adjacent lattice oxygen sites, thereby introducing a lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) channel while retaining partial metal-site adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) activity. As a result, the catalyst delivers an overpotential of 230 m V at 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 27.9 mV dec −1 , demonstrating excellent OER performance. When assembled as the anode catalyst in an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer, CeCoFe-LDH achieves a cell voltage of only 1.71 V at 1 A cm −2 and 60 °C, with stable operation for 220 h. Experimental characterization and theoretical calculations reveal that Ce-O v coupling upshifts the O 2 p band center while moderately weakening the Co O bonds, thereby facilitating controlled lattice oxygen redox participation. Meanwhile, residual AEM activity on Co sites, together with Ce-mediated structural stabilization, prevents excessive lattice oxygen consumption and suppresses Co/Fe dissolution and deep surface reconstruction, allowing stable OER operation for 1500 h at 500 mA cm −2 . These findings highlight a rational strategy for durable high-performance OER electrocatalysts for industrial applications. CoFe NPs was synthesized for catalytic oxidation of TH. • Cysteine inhibits oxidation of TH oxidation catalyzed by CoFe NPs. • A catalytic cascade combining ACTh hydrolysis and CoFe NPs catalysis. • The system rapidly and specifically senses OPs with an ultralow LOD (0.5 ng/mL). Traditional methods for pesticide residue detection often rely on expensive instruments, are time-consuming, and lack cost efficiency. This investigation developed a fluorescence-based assay that utilizes cascade amplification through cholinesterase hydrolysis and thiamine (TH) oxidation for the detection of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs). A Prussian blue analog (CoFe NPs) with high catalytic activity for TH oxidation was synthesized. Cholinesterase hydrolyzes acetylthiocholine to produce thiocholine, which subsequently inhibits the CoFe NPs-catalyzed oxidation of TH. In the presence of paraoxon, acetylcholinesterase activity is inhibited, leading to restored TH oxidation and generating a strong fluorescence signal. The increase in fluorescence intensity is proportional to paraoxon concentration. This novel assay demonstrates a linear detection range of 0–10 ng/mL, achieving a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.5 ng/mL, indicating sensitivity superior to that reported in previous studies. This work presents a sensitive and innovative strategy for OPs detection. Download: Download high-res image (144KB) Download: Download full-size image

Advanced oxidation processes are promising strategies for treating antibiotic-containing wastewater. However, poor anti-interference ability, inherent catalyst limitations, and “low-concentration barrier” (at concentrations of <20 mg L −1 ) restrict their applications. This study developed a CoFe layered double hydroxide (CoFe-LDH) membrane (CoFe-LDHm) for removing low-concentration ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (CIP·HCl·H 2 O). A CoFe-LDHm/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system was developed, which exhibited exceptional catalytic performance with high stability for 100 h, achieving a maximum CIP·HCl·H 2 O removal efficiency (RE) of 96 % with an ultrashort retention time of 3.6 ms and a first-order rate constant of 1.61 ms −1 . The CoFe-LDHm/PMS system demonstrated strong anti-interference capability, maintaining a CIP·HCl·H 2 O RE of ≥88 % across a pH range of 4–8 and in complex water matrices. The CoFe-LDHm/PMS system also efficiently removed other recalcitrant micropollutants, including enrofloxacin, ranitidine, sulfamethoxazole, methyl orange, and bisphenol A, with RE values of ≥92 %. Mechanistic studies revealed that sulfate and hydroxyl radicals dominated CIP·HCl·H 2 O degradation, which was facilitated by the redox cycling of Co 2+ /Co 3+ and Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ . Density functional theory calculations further elucidated PMS adsorption and activation pathways on the CoFe-LDH surface. Toxicity assessments confirmed reduced ecological risks of associated intermediates. Life cycle assessment revealed that the CoFe-LDHm/PMS system represents an environmentally favorable wastewater treatment technology. This study advances the design of nanocatalytic membranes for the sustainable treatment of recalcitrant pharmaceutical contaminants.

Magnetic quantum dot (QD)-like CoFe alloy@C nanocomposites derived from ZnCo-MOF using low-dimensional carbon as carriers for electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorption were successfully synthesized by in situ growth and pyrolysis. The resulting CoFe@C nanocomposites were homogeneously conjoined with different carbon supports such as two-dimensional (2D) reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanotubes (CNT). Results indicated EMW absorption properties of CoFe@C were enhanced by introduction of rGO and CNT as carbon hosts for the construction of conductive networks due to the excellent impedance matching and electromagnetic attenuation. The rGO-supported CoFe@C composites annealed at 900 °C (rGO-CoFe@C-900) revealed a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −36.08 dB at the sample thickness of 3.0 mm and an effective bandwidth (RL < −10 dB) of 5.17 GHz at 3.5 m. Moreover, the CNT-supported CoFe@C nanocomposites pyrolyzed at 900 °C (CNT-CoFe@C-900) exhibited optimum EMW absorption performances due to the continuous 3D conductive networks, RL min of −40.00 dB with the thickness of 3.0 mm, and effective absorption bandwidth reached 5.62 GHz with a thickness of 2.0 mm. In particular, the specific reflection loss values of the resulting nanocomposites significantly preceded that of the reported similar dielectric-magnetic hybrids. In view of the superior EMW absorption properties, the as-fabricated low-dimensional carbon-supported magnetic quantum dot-like (QD-like) CoFe alloy@C composites will be utilized as ideal candidates for high-efficient EMW absorption.

Due to the serious energy and environmental issues, hydrogen generation via water splitting has been regarded as a green and promising alternative strategy to the use of fossil fuels. Developing highly efficient and non-noble metal based dual-functional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting to generate hydrogen and oxygen has become more critical. In order to fulfill the requirements of efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), herein, we report novel hierarchical Co(OH)F@CoFe-LDH heterostructured nanorod arrays fabricated via a facile two-step approach. The resultant Co(OH)F@CoFe-LDH displays exceptional electrocatalytic OER and HER activity with a small overpotential of 240 mV and 130 mV at 10 mA cm−2, respectively. Further, the electrocatalyst revealed excellent long-term stability during a recyclability test for 37 h. The superior performance of Co(OH)F@CoFe-LDH can be attributed to the synergistic effect at the interface of the Co(OH)F nanorods and the covered CoFe-LDH nanosheets. Meanwhile, Co(OH)F@CoFe-LDH as a water electrolyzer to produce a current density of 10 mA cm−2 requires a small voltage of 1.58 V. This work paves the way for the design and construction of low cost and highly efficient 3D hierarchical electrodes for practical applications in electrocatalysis.
