Enhanced charge separation through oxygen vacancy-mediated anchoring of CoNi-ZIF on BiVO4 photoanodes

Yufeng Guan,Yuanyuan Zhang,Yaqi Zhang,Zeyuan Zhao,He Wang,Jiangang Jiang,Wenquan Zhou

Surface OVs act as robust atomic anchors to capture CoNi-ZIF on BiVO 4 . • Defect anchoring drives ∼4.0 e⁻ transfer for efficient charge separation. • Built-in electric field significantly lowers the OER activation energy barrier. • The engineered interface yields 4.16 mA cm⁻ 2 with an exceptional 97.6% stability. • This heterojunction achieves dual PEC water splitting and MB degradation. Bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) is extensively investigated for solar-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) applications. However, its performance is largely limited by severe bulk charge recombination and sluggish surface reaction kinetics. In this work, a strategy combining defect engineering with in-situ self-assembly was developed to construct a planar photoanode, which integrates an oxygen-vacancy-rich BiVO 4 (OV-BVO) skeleton with a strongly coupled bimetallic CoNi-zeolitic imidazolate framework (CoNi-ZIF) cocatalyst layer. Experimental characterizations combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the introduced oxygen vacancies (OVs) play dual critical roles. In the bulk, OVs induce V 4 ⁺ polaron states, significantly enhancing intrinsic conductivity and visible-light absorption. At the interface, OVs serve as atomic anchoring sites, inducing a substantial electron transfer of ∼4.0 e and generating a strong built-in electric field (maximum photovoltage of 418.1 mV). This efficiently drives photogenerated holes into the CoNi-ZIF layer, achieving a surface hole injection efficiency exceeding 80%. Consequently, the optimized OV-BVO/CoNi-ZIF photoanode delivers a photocurrent density of 4.16 mA cm⁻ 2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE (2.6 times that of Pure BVO) and maintains stable continuous operation without structural degradation. This study elucidates the defect-mediated charge transfer mechanism at the atomic scale, providing specific design strategies for advanced photoanodes in solar energy conversion. A bifunctional CoNi alloy for electrocatalytically coupled cathodic nitrate reduction and anodic HPAM oxidation

Yu Fu,Lijie Qi,Wanli Kang,Saule B. Aidarova,Hongbin Yang,Shujun Liu

The construction of electrocatalytic cathodic nitrate reduction and anodic polyacrylamide (HPAM) oxidation reactions is a promising new electrocatalytic reaction system, which promises simultaneous ammonia synthesis and HPAM degradation. Here, we synthesised an N-doped C nanotube-encapsulated CoNi nano-alloy and used it for electrocatalytic NO 3 − reduction and HPAM oxidation reactions. Therein, CoNi-0.5 could achieve the maximum ammonia yield and Faraday efficiency of 5516.73 ± 66.07 μg h −1 mg cat −1 and 94.71 ± 1.21 %, respectively. Meanwhile, the maximum degradation rate of HPAM was 73.02 ± 1.16 % at 2 h. By In-situ ATR-SEIRAS, in-situ DEMS demonstrated that *NOH is an important reaction intermediate in the ammonia synthesis process, and the bimetallic CoNi alloy can effectively reduce the reaction energy barrier for NO 3 − reduction. This work presents a new strategy for constructing a coupled system for electrocatalytic NO 3 − reduction.

Bimetallic MOF-derived porous CoNi/C nanocomposites with ultra-wide band microwave absorption properties

Chang Liu,Jing Qiao,Xue Zhang,Dongmei Xu,Nannan Wu,Longfei Lv,Wei Liu,Jiurong Liu

In this paper, we report the facile synthesis of CoNi/C nanocomposites derived from bimetallic metal organic frameworks for electromagnetic wave absorption applications. The effects of carbonation temperature on the phase structure, morphology and microwave absorption properties of the derived nanocomposites were thoroughly studied. Micro-structure characterization results indicated that the obtained CoNi/C composites are composed of numerous fine particles with the size of 20 nm, and in the composites, Ni, Co, and C elements are uniformly distributed. Electromagnetic wave absorption property evaluation showed that CoNi/C obtained at 650 °C outperformed those samples prepared at 500, 800 or 950 °C. The minimum reflection loss (RL) of −74.7 dB could be achieved with a thickness of 1.8 mm at 15.6 GHz. The effective absorption bandwidth (RL ≤ −10 dB) ranged from 2.9 GHz to 18 GHz. This study shows that these porous Co–Ni/C nanocomposites derived from MOFs are attractive candidates as electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbers due to the combined advantages of excellent impedance matching and strong interfacial loss between metallic NPs and porous carbon composites.

In situ hydrolysis strategy to synthesis ultrathin CoNi-LDH nanoflowers for High-performance supercapacitors

Zhihao Song,Qingkun Meng,Fuxiang Wei,Qing Yin,Yanwei Sui,Jiqiu Qi

Cobalt-based metal–organic framework (MOF) is commonly used as templates to prepare layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with specific morphology to improve the pseudocapacitance capacity. A multi-step synthesis method was employed in the reported work to introduce a second metal during the preparation process of bimetallic LDH materials. Herein, we disclosed a facile and efficient one-step in-situ hydrolysis strategy to prepare CoNi-LDH under mild condition using CoNi-MOF precursor, which introduces Ni element in the Co-MOF nucleation process. The method for synthesizing CoNi-LDH with nanoflower structure can omit the past time-consuming synthesis process and the complex modification process. The obtained CoNi-LDH at 60 °C achieves specific capacitance as high as 1634.1F g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 . The assembled CoNi-LDH-24//RGO ASC deliver high energy density of 48.97 Wh kg −1 at the power density of 787.16 W kg −1 , and the capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles can reach 81.7%. This work provides a mild and simple method to synthesize 3D structure LDH materials with excellent supercapacitor performance, and further confirms that the in-situ hydrolysis method is feasible and promising in the preparation of 3D CoNi-LDH nanoflowers.

P-doped MOF-derived CoNi bimetallic sulfide electrocatalyst for highly-efficiency overall water splitting

Shi Chen,Wenjing Liang,Xinyi Wang,Yueqi Zhao,Shuo Wang,Zheng Li,Shengmei Wang,Li Hou,Yang Jiang,Faming Gao

Transition metal sulfides (TMSs) are widely used in energy storage and energy conversion systems because of their excellent electrochemical properties . However, their application is restricted by a low electron transfer efficiency, few active sites and poor stability. In this paper, CoNi bimetallic sulfides supported by carbon skeleton (CoNi-SP/NPC) were prepared using bimetallic organic frameworks (MOFs) as templates and modified with phosphorus doping. Compared with single metal sulfides, the bimetallic sulfides are more favorable for electron transfer in the catalytic process. Meanwhile, the carbon skeleton support gives the catalyst higher mechanical stability, and the P-doping brings more active sites into to contact with the aqueous solution. The overpotential of CoNi-SP/NPC catalyst is only 105 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 313 mV at 100 mA cm −2 for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In addition, CoNi-SP/NPC also displays remarkable performance in the course of overall water splitting, which can achieve 50 mA cm −2 at only 1.8 V and remains good stability for 12 h. This work proposes a feasible strategy to synthesize highly efficient water splitting electrocatalysts .

Superior Electrocatalysis Delivered by a Directional Electron Transfer Cascade in Hierarchical CoNi/Ru@C

Mingpu Jia,Ling Shen,Ge Tian,Susana I. Córdoba de Torresi,Mark D. Symes,Xiao-Yu Yang

Graphical The spatial junction in hierarchical confined CoNi/Ru@C has been synthesized, and its directional effect of electron transfer cascade can greatly promote the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution in alkaline water/seawater. Exploiting directional electron transfer cascades could lead to high-performance electrocatalysts for processes such as the hydrogen evolution reaction, but realising such systems is difficult. Herein, a hierarchical confined material (CoNi/Ru@C) is presented, which provides a suitable spatial junction to enable directional electron transfer, giving superior hydrogen evolution in alkaline water/seawater.

Ultralow Ru loaded CoNi bimetallic phosphides nanorods as efficient electrocatalyst for overall water splitting

Yantong Long,Guoliang Zhao,Liuxin Yang,Yuxuan An,Yongjun Xu,Chen Xu

Efficient hydrogen/oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER) bifunctional catalysts are critical to the overall water splitting efficiency. In this paper, a 1D rod-like structure bifunctional catalyst was firstly prepared, with ultralow Ru (1.19 wt%) loaded into CoNi bimetallic phosphides derived from 1D MOF-74-CoNi nanorods . Due to the strong interface interaction between Co and Ni bimetals which tunes the electronic structure and the Ru loading which increases the number of active sites of the catalyst, the electrocatalytic performance for both HER (8.7mV@10 mA cm −2 ) and OER (179.4mV@10 mA cm −2 ) under alkaline condition were significantly improved. The cell voltage of the full water splitting device assembled by the catalysts was only 1.47 V to achieve 10 mA cm −2 . The rational materials design of 1D rod-like structured bimetallic phosphide catalysts in this work may suggest a new strategy for the preparation of other bifunctional electrocatalysts .

Carbon dot embedded CoNi bimetallic phosphide nanorods as an efficient electrocatalyst for overall water splitting

Yantong Long,Guoliang Zhao,Liuxin Yang,Yongjun Xu,Chen Xu

Efficient bifunctional catalysts for hydrogen/oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER) are critical for industrial application of overall water splitting. Herein, a self-supported nanostructure consisting of CoNi–P and embedded carbon dots (denoted as CoNi–P/CDs/NF) with large specific surface area has been designed and fabricated, through a phosphorization process on precursors grown on 3D porous Ni foam. The resultant electrocatalyst exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance for both the HER (45.2 mV@10 mA cm−2) and OER (184.8 mV@20 mA cm−2) under alkaline conditions. The cell voltage of the full water splitting device assembled was only 1.50 V to achieve 20 mA cm−2 and exhibited great durability benefiting from the self-supported nanostructure. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations and XPS analysis suggest that the synergistic coupling effect between CDs and substrate CoNi–P could tune the electronic structure. Moreover, the embedded CDs increase electrical conductivity and active sites of the catalyst. Both of these and the high specific surface benefited from the 1D/3D hierarchical structure could explain the excellent electrocatalytic performance. The rational materials design of 1D/3D hierarchical structured non-noble bimetallic phosphide catalysts in this work may suggest a new strategy for designing bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Hydroxyl−functionalized polythiophene−coated CoNi−SeS/hollow carbon sphere electrodes for quasi−solid−state supercapacitors

Yajun Liu,Xuguang Wang,Tursun Abdiryim,Ruxangul Jamal,Abdukeyum Abdurexit,Feng Xu,Nana Fan,Kai Song,Hongtao Yang

Supercapacitors are a new class of energy storage devices with long cycle life, good reversibility, stability and safety. A (Poly (3,4-propylenedioxythiophene) − OH/CoNi−SeS @Hollow carbon sphere) PProDOT−OH/CoNi−SeS @HCS composite material is synthesized via a sulfurization/selenization ion exchange method and in−situ oxidation , which exhibits excellent electrochemical performance and a heterogeneous structure with multi-phase interfaces. The material's mass specific capacity is as high as 775.1C g −1 at 1 A g −1 . Even if it is increased to 20 A g −1 , it can still maintain 80.4 % of the capacitance. By combining the designed polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/potassium hydroxide (KOH) hydrogel electrolyte, a conformal interface was formed, which combines both high conductivity and electrochemical stability. After assembling into a quasi-solid-state AC//PVA/KOH//PProDOT−OH/CoNi−SeS@HCS device, when the energy density is as high as 84.8 Wh kg −1 , the power density is 8000 W kg −1 . The subsequent 20,000 cycle stability test can still prove the excellence of the device, with the Coulombic efficiency as high as 98.81 % and the capacitance retention rate as high as 82.85 %. The better capacitance performance is achieved due to the synergistic effect of the conductive polymer, the hollow structure, the modified electronic structure and the multi-component system.

CoNi-LDH/TiOx type-II heterojunction via atomic layer deposition for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Qinshan Xie,Zhongxin Song,Lei Zhang,Qianling Zhang,Xiangzhong Ren,Yongliang Li

Manipulating internal charge migration pathways by regulating the electron distribution is an effective strategy to enhance photogenerated carriers separation and migration, which is critical for advancing photocatalytic water reduction technology. Using zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) as the precursor, chemical etching facilitates the growth of uniform and dense CoNi-layered double hydroxide (CoNi-LDH) nanosheets along the cubic shell, ultimately forming CoNi-LDH hollow nanocages. Additionally, A type-II heterojunction with precisely controlled TiO x thickness, denoted as CoNi-LDH/TiO x , was engineered using atomic layer deposition (ALD). This technique takes the advantage of the unique self-limiting reactions of ALD to achieve atomic-level thickness control, which is crucial for the spatial separation of photogenerated carriers. Consequently, this promotes the migration efficiency of these carriers. The optimized CoNi-LDH/TiO x photocatalyst achieved a hydrogen production rate of 5.239 mmol g −1 h −1 , showing a fourfold increase in efficiency. These results provide valuable insights for future research and development in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen production, particularly when utilizing LDH-based catalysts.

Hierarchical core–shell BCN@CoNi@PANI with synergistic dielectric/magnetic loss for ultrawideband microwave absorption

Guo Sijia,Qin Jianguo,Liu Xiangdong,Yang Chuanhua,Song Baisen,Zhu Yongchang,Li Zizhou

Lightweight broadband microwave absorbers with strong attenuation remain challenging because efficient absorption requires balanced impedance matching and electromagnetic loss over a wide frequency range. Herein, hierarchical core–shell BCN@CoNi@PANI (BCNPa) composites were rationally designed by integrating BCN, CoNi alloy, and conductive PANI. BCN serves as a lightweight dielectric substrate, CoNi provides magnetic loss, and the outer PANI shell regulates dielectric response and conductive loss. The electromagnetic properties of BCNPa can be effectively tuned by adjusting the PANI content. The excellent absorption performance over 2–18 GHz originates from the synergistic effects of impedance matching, dielectric loss, magnetic loss, and hierarchical structural attenuation. Dielectric loss is mainly related to defect-induced dipole polarization, interface-related polarization relaxation, and conductive loss from the π-conjugated PANI shell, while magnetic loss arises from natural resonance, exchange resonance, and eddy current loss of CoNi. Benefiting from optimized dielectric–magnetic balance, BCNPa-2 achieves ultralow minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of − 81.4 dB at 14.12 GHz and an ultrabroad effective absorption bandwidth ( EAB ) covering nearly the entire measured range. This work provides an effective strategy for high-performance broadband microwave absorbers.

Prussian blue analogue-derived CoNi@NC core-shell microspheres for peroxymonosulfate activation toward tetracycline degradation

Shuqi Su,Jiujiang Guo,Jianxin Li,Lan Liang,Bo Li,Jie Guo,Kai Wang,Cheng Tian,Youkuo Lin,Meiyang Wang,Yongjiang Hou

CoNi@NC core-shell microspheres were synthesized via pyrolysis of Co-Ni PBA. • A temporal knowledge graph model was built to predict dynamic catalytic behavior. • CoNi@NC achieved 73.7% TCH removal efficiency within 3 min and 91.89% within 60 min. • TCH degradation involves radical/non-radical pathways dominated by O 2 •− and 1 O 2 . • The synergistic Co/Ni bimetallic redox cycles accelerate PMS activation. Prussian blue analogue (PBA)-derived carbon catalysts are promising peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activators for antibiotic wastewater purification, yet their time-dependent degradation behavior still requires further evaluation. Herein, a core-shell CoNi@NC catalyst was prepared by pyrolyzing Co Ni PBA, in which Co Ni alloy nanoparticles were confined within an N-doped carbon (NC) matrix. To evaluate the tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) degradation behavior, a temporal knowledge graph (TKG)-assisted framework was employed as a complementary prediction tool, predicting a shift of the CoNi@NC/PMS system toward high degradation efficiency intervals. In degradation experiments, the CoNi@NC/PMS system exhibited a rapid degradation trend consistent with the prediction, achieving 73.7% TCH removal within 3 min and 91.89% within 60 min. The catalyst retained 86.74% removal efficiency after four degradation cycles, and exhibited good matrix tolerance under different pH conditions and coexisting ions. Mechanistic analysis revealed that TCH degradation proceeded through a radical/non-radical synergistic pathway, in which Co/Ni redox cycles and interfacial electron transfer promoted PMS activation. The reaction products of TCH were identified, and the toxicity assessment indicated reduced phytotoxicity of the treated solution. This work provides a useful reference for developing efficient PBA-derived catalysts for PMS-based antibiotic wastewater purification.
