Novel Electrochemical Sensor Based on Cu-MOF/MWCNT-COOH for the Simultaneous Detection of Ascorbic Acid and Dopamine

Guoping Wang,Tian Tang,Ruichen Liu,Jingwen Li,Yi Xu,Sen Liao

By utilizing carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-COOH) to strengthen the interaction between the electrode and the analytes and improve the conductivity of the composite material and in conjunction with the superior catalytic properties of copper-based metal–organic framework (MOFs), a novel electrochemical sensor was fabricated from a Cu-MOF/MWCNT-COOH composite, specifically designed for the simultaneous and distinct detection of ascorbic acid (AA) and dopamine (DA). Electrochemical analyses were conducted on the innovative Cu-MOF/MWCNT-COOH electrode through both CV and DPV, revealing unique electrochemical behaviors for AA and DA. The sensor not only showed exceptional electrocatalytic properties but also distinguished itself by its broad dynamic response ranges, covering concentrations from 3 to 1800 μM for AA and from 2 to 180 μM for DA, with detection limits (S/N = 3) of 3.00 μM for AA and 0.32 μM for DA. Furthermore, this electrochemical detection platform exhibited robust reproducibility and selectivity. Examinations of serum samples yielded the recovery rates of AA and DA which were 101.9% and 102.1%, respectively, confirming the sensor’s capability to perform reliably under varied biological conditions. The findings confirm the sensor’s potential of the proposed method for the simultaneous, sensitive, and reliable detection of AA and DA. In conclusion, the electrochemical sensor has a promising potential for practical applications.

Enhanced Na+ Transport in Cu-MOF Reinforced PEO Solid-State Polymer Electrolyte for High-Rate Sodium Metal Batteries

Yuping Wu,Hu Fu,Bolin Li,Qinran Zhang,Zhirong Chen,Haichen Li,Hongming Zhou

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based solid polymer electrolytes are regarded as highly promising solid electrolyte materials owing to their favorable chain flexibility. However, their practical application is hindered by low room-temperature ionic conductivity and poor mechanical properties. To address these issues, a metal–organic framework (Cu-MOF) with a 2D layered structure and 1D microchannels is introduced into PEO to form a composite solid electrolyte. The results reveal that Cu-MOF can suppress PEO crystallization through steric hindrance and coordination interactions, thereby increasing the fraction of the amorphous phase. Moreover, its unsaturated metal sites can attract TFSI−anions, promoting the dissociation of the sodium salt and enhancing sodium-ion transport. Theoretical calculations and molecular simulations further confirm the regulatory role of Cu-MOF in ion transport. Leveraging this mechanism, the Na3V2(PO4)3/C|PCM-8%|Na cell delivers exceptional electrochemical performance over a wide temperature range. At room temperature, the capacity exhibits virtually no decay after 200 cycles at 0.5 C, and outstanding rate capability is maintained even at a high rate of 4 C. At a temperature of 65 °C, a capacity retention of 91.4% is achieved after 200 cycles at 0.5 C. This study offers a highly promising strategy for the development of wide-temperature-range, high-performance solid-state sodium batteries.

Imidazole derivative-regulated Cu-MOF nanozyme sensor array integrating machine learning for flavonoids detection and soy milk traceability

Kaiqiang Yang,Junlei Liu,Wenyan Zhang,Wenying Li,Wei Xu

Flavonoids are important natural bioactive compounds with remarkable health benefits, requiring rapid and accurate detection for food nutrition assessment and quality control. However, it remains challenging to simultaneously discriminate multiple flavonoids in complex matrices. Taking inspiration from the tunable structures of MOF-based nanozymes and the ability of sensor arrays to simultaneously detect multiple substances, we herein propose an innovative four-channel colorimetric sensor array for flavonoid identification. Four copper-based MOF nanozymes (Cu-ImC 2 N, Cu-ImC 2 , Cu-ImCl 2 , Cu-ImPh) were synthesized with different imidazole derivatives as ligands, showing significant differences in their peroxidase-like activities. Exploiting their specific catalytic activity variations at pH 6.0 and 6.5, the two most active nanozymes (Cu-ImC 2 N and Cu-ImC 2 ) were strategically selected to construct the array. Upon processing the array data with linear discriminant analysis (LDA), the array achieved 100% accurate discrimination and quantitative detection of seven flavonoids, with limits of detection (LODs) ranging from 0.039 to 0.982 μM. Furthermore, comparisons of concentration-independent models built with multiple machine learning algorithms showed that the K-nearest neighbors (KNN) method outperformed LDA, effectively reducing interference from concentration variations. The sensor array was successfully applied to the analysis of commercial soy milk, reliably differentiating products from different brands and bean sources (e.g., soybean and mung bean). This strategy surpasses traditional single-analyte methods and holds substantial practical potential for the rapid on-site detection of complex food systems.

Cu/Cu2O-embedded carbon from Cu-MOF integrated with MWCNTs-COOH for sensitive levodopa detection in biological samples

Nanke Ma,Anqi Wei,Huiling Peng,Lixia Xie,Yuan Jin,Guangli Li

Cu-MOF-derived Cu/Cu 2 O-embedded carbon integrated with MWCNTs-COOH. • Synergistic hetero-interface with Cu⁺ Lewis acid sites and conductive network. • Sensitive L -DOPA detection with 0.007 μM LOD and broad linear range. • Effective anti-interference against uric acid in biological matrices. • Validated applicability in human serum and urine samples (94.8–105.2%). Reliable monitoring of levodopa ( L -DOPA) is clinically crucial for optimizing Parkinson’s disease therapy and minimizing side effects. Herein, a sensitive electrochemical sensor was constructed using a composite of Cu-MOF-derived Cu/Cu 2 O-embedded carbon integrated with carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (C-Cu-MOF/MWCNTs-COOH). The key innovation of this work lies in designing a synergistic hetero-interface where carbonization yields Cu and Cu 2 O species within a carbon framework, while the incorporated MWCNTs-COOH establish a conductive network that facilitates electron transfer. The enhanced electrochemical response arises from the synergistic interaction between the mixed-valence copper species and the carbon framework. Specifically, Cu + serves as Lewis acid sites for L -DOPA enrichment while the carbon scaffold together with Cu 0 promotes interfacial electron transfer. Kinetic analysis reveals an adsorption-controlled process involving two-electron and two-proton transfer. Under optimized conditions, the sensor delivers a broad linear response (0.01–15 μM) with a low detection limit of 0.007 μM, alongside satisfactory repeatability, reproducibility, and long-term stability (94.3% retention after 21 days). Notably, uric acid (UA), a major coexisting interferent in physiological fluids with overlapping oxidation potential, is well resolved from L -DOPA at the modified electrode, causing negligible interference in coexistent measurements. Practical applicability is further validated by recoveries of 94.8–105.2% in human serum and urine samples. These results demonstrate that C-Cu-MOF/MWCNTs-COOH is a highly effective sensing platform for L -DOPA, combining excellent sensitivity, selectivity, and practical utility for clinical monitoring.

Construction of a hollow octahedral NiCo2S4/carbon composite derived from a Cu-MOF template for high-performance supercapacitors

Jialong Li,Shiye Cai,C. Srinivasakannan,Tong Han,Gang Xue,Li Wang,Yaping Wang,Xinhui Duan

A hollow octahedral NiCo 2 S 4 /carbon composite was rationally constructed through precursor regulation, sulfidation, and subsequent carbonization using a Cu-MOF-derived template. Benefiting from the well-preserved hollow architecture, uniformly distributed NiCo 2 S 4 active shell, and conductive carbon framework, the optimized 3-NiCo 2 S 4 @HC sample exhibits enhanced electrochemical performance as a supercapacitor electrode. In a three-electrode system, 3-NiCo 2 S 4 @HC delivers a high specific capacity of 858.5 C·g −1 at 1 A·g −1 and retains 84.2% of its initial capacity at 30 A·g −1 . In addition, it shows excellent cycling stability with 94.27% capacity retention after 10,000 cycles at 10 A·g −1 . Kinetic analysis reveals that the charge-storage process involves both diffusion-controlled Faradaic reactions and capacitive contributions, while the hierarchical hollow porous structure facilitates electrolyte infiltration and ion/electron transport. Furthermore, an assembled 3-NiCo 2 S 4 @HC//AC hybrid supercapacitor operates stably up to 1.6 V, delivering an energy density of 54.9 Wh·kg −1 at a power density of 799.9 W·kg −1 , and retaining 84% of its initial capacitance after 10,000 cycles. This work demonstrates that the synergistic integration of hollow structural engineering and carbonization is an effective strategy for developing high-performance Ni Co sulfide-based supercapacitor electrodes.

Cu-MOF-confined Co nanoparticle nanozymes with synergistic peroxidase-like activity for highly selective colorimetric detection of hydroquinone

Tanzeel Riaz Ahmad,Xin Li,Ling Jiang,Jie Jin,Xiupei Yang,Fenglin Tang

Background Hydroquinone (HQ), a widely used industrial chemical, persists in the environment and poses significant health risks, including carcinogenicity, as classified by the WHO. Existing detection methods (e.g., HPLC, GC-MS) rely on sophisticated instruments and complex procedures, limiting their practicality. Colorimetric sensors based on nanozymes offer simplicity and rapidity but often suffer from poor selectivity because of interference from structural isomers (catechol and resorcinol). The development of a high-performance nanozyme with synergistic activity and selective HQ detection remains a critical challenge. Results A bimetallic nanozyme (Cu-MOF@CoNPs) was engineered via a “ship-in-a-bottle” strategy, which successfully confined cobalt nanoparticles (Co NPs) within a porous copper–organic framework (Cu-MOF) scaffold. Characterization (SEM, XRD, FTIR, and XPS) confirmed the successful integration of Co NPs into the Cu-MOF matrix, preserving structural integrity through a pillaring effect while enhancing active site exposure. The composite exhibited superior peroxidase-like activity, with Michaelis constants ( K m ) of 0.39 mM (TMB) and 0.18 mM (H 2 O 2 ), indicating higher substrate affinity than that of natural horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Catalysis was driven by synergistic Cu–Co electron transfer, generating holes (h + ) and superoxide radicals (•O 2 − ). A “signal-off” colorimetric sensor was constructed on the basis of the HQinduced reduction of oxidized TMB (oxTMB), achieving a linear range of 0.2–12 μM, a low detection limit of 65 nM, and high selectivity for HQ over structural isomers (catechol and resorcinol) due to steric confinement and favorable redox kinetics, as verified through expanded interference studies. Practical applicability was validated in tap water, lake water, soil extracts, and cosmetic samples, with recoveries of 94–110% and relative standard deviations <3.5%. Significance The Cu-MOF@CoNPs nanozyme-based sensor provides a cost-effective, portable platform for onsite HQ detection in environmental and consumer safety monitoring. Its high sensitivity, selectivity, and stability highlight the potential of hierarchical MOF-confined bimetallic nanozymes as robust tools for reliable phenolic pollutant analysis.

Facile synthesis of defective Cu/MOF-808 with high Cu utilization for efficient iodide adsorption and mechanistic insights

Minjie Chen,Junjie Tan,Lei Liao,Hao Zou,Ning Pan,Hao Lei,Xiaoqin Nie

The rapid expansion of nuclear medicine has led to the accumulation of large volumes of iodine-containing radioactive wastewater, posing significant threats to both aquatic ecosystems and human health. To address this issue, an environmentally benign and structurally robust adsorbent, Cu-loaded MOF-808, was synthesized via a simple one-pot method. In static batch adsorption experiments, 0.2Cu/MOF-808(1.0) exhibited a maximum iodide adsorption capacity of 188.7 mg g −1 , with an improved Cu utilization efficiency of 51.5 %. Notably, the material maintained a considerable adsorption capacity of 38.3 mg g −1 even under strongly alkaline conditions (pH = 11.0). Moreover, it displayed excellent selectivity toward iodide in the presence of competing anions such as NO 3 − and SO 4 2− . Comprehensive spectroscopic characterization, including extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis, revealed a redox-mediated adsorption mechanism. Specifically, Cu 0 is oxidized to Cu + through interactions with carboxyl groups, followed by electrostatic attraction between Cu + and I − to form CuI, while additional bonding occurs between I − and Zr-O-Zr units to generate Zr-O-I linkages. Overall, this study demonstrates the successful preparation of 0.2Cu/MOF-808(1.0) and underscores its strong potential for efficient iodide removal from radioactive wastewater in nuclear medicine applications.

Passivation-Enhanced Mixed-Potential Cu-MOF Sensor for ppb-Level H2S Detection and Real-Time Food Freshness Evaluation

Qiule Li,Xianpeng Liu,Yueying Zhang,Xinge Wang,Jing Wang,Bin Wang,Geyu Lu,Fangmeng Liu

Precise detection of hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), a key spoilage marker in premium foods, is essential for maintaining both flavor and safety. However, conventional sensors often struggle to achieve high sensitivity, stability, and low power consumption simultaneously. Here, we report a mixed-potential type gas sensor based on Cu-MOF sensing electrode, K 2 Fe 4 O 7 solid electrolyte, and Au reference electrode for rapid and non-destructive food freshness evaluation. The sensor achieves an ultra-low detection limit (LOD) below 5 ppb at room temperature via a two-electrode response mechanism, addressing the stringent requirements of premium food quality control. To improve stability, an electrode passivation strategy was introduced to suppress the formation of inactive sulfate deposits, extending repeatability from 22 to 66 cycles (change rate within 10%). Replacing Cu-MOF with CuO, its stability significantly improved after passivation, confirming the strategy’s general applicability. We further developed a portable H 2 S monitoring system capable of real-time freshness tracking, showing a strong correlation with early spoilage. This work demonstrates a generalizable stabilization strategy for mixed-potential type H 2 S sensors and provides a practical, non-destructive platform for freshness grading in premium food supply chains.

Novel thin film nanocomposite membranes developed via polydopamine nanoparticles, Halloysite nanotubes and Cu-MOF nanosheets for dye removal

Junfeng Zheng,Jinyu Liu,Zikang Qin,Yulei Ma,Yahui Yang,Linlin Yang,Hang He,Zhongde Dai,Wenju Jiang,Lin Yang,Lu Yao,Bo Tang

High water flux and dye rejection are crucial for effective textile wastewater treatment. In this study, novel two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were synthesized and combined with one-dimensional (1D) halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and polydopamine (PDA) to fabricate the thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes. The surface morphology, chemical composition, and separation performance of resultant membranes were systematically characterized to illustrate their structure-property-performance relationships. Introducing hydrophilic 1D HNTs enhanced membrane hydrophilicity and bridged large gaps between the 2D MOF nanosheets. Under optimized conditions, the PDA-HNTs/MOFs membrane achieved a water permeance of 362.1 LMH·bar⁻¹ and 99.9 % rejection of Congo Red. PDA acted as a “bridge” linking HNTs and MOFs to the membrane substrate, thereby providing excellent antifouling performance and long-term stability. After 72 h of continuous operation, this membrane maintained a 99.1 % rejection of Congo Red, greatly surpassing both pure MOFs and HNTs/MOFs membranes. These findings highlight the superior filtration capabilities and promising potential of PDA-HNTs/MOFs membranes for dye wastewater treatment.

Controllable Preparation of Cu-MOF-Coated Carboxyl Filter Paper for Simultaneous Removal of Organic Dye and Metal Ions

Ziyi Xiao,Junsheng Zhou,Lu Fan,Yu Li,Yuting He,Yingxi Wang,Ling Li

A composite paper was designed in order to remove dyes and heavy metal ions in wastewater, which was prepared by assembling NH2-Cu-BDC layer by layer on the surface of the carboxymethyl-modified filter paper (CMFP). The prepared composite paper (Cu-MOFs/CMFP) shows the ability to capture dyes and metal ions, and the dye and metal solution can be separated by simple filtration on the MOF paper at the same time. The application of 30-layer Cu-MOFs/CMFP in the removal of pollutants in simulated wastewater was discussed, and it was found that Cu-MOFs/CMFP can simultaneously remove dyes and heavy metal ions with removal rates close to 90%. In addition, Cu-MOFs/CMFP can be reused after a simple washing process and maintains prosperous dye capture ability. The successful development of this technique provides a new strategy to design new materials for the removal of organic dyes and heavy metal ions in wastewater.

Electrocatalysis of Cu−MOF/Graphene Composite and its Sensing Application for Electrochemical Simultaneous Determination of Dopamine and Paracetamol

Baolong Ma,Hao Guo,Mingyue Wang,Li Li,Xueyan Jia,Huiqin Chen,Rui Xue,Wu Yang

A nanocomposite of HKUST-1 (MOF) and electroreduction graphene oxide (ERGO) is prepared and applied as an electrochemical sensor for the simultaneous determination of paracetamol and dopamine by means of one-step electrodeposition. The MOF/ERGO composite displays excellent electrochemical catalytic activities towards the paracetamol and dopamine, which is attributed to the synergistic effect of big surface area, porosity and high electrocataytic activity of the MOF and good conductivity of ERGO. The modified electrode could be applied to determine simultaneously paracetamol and dopamine in biochemical samples with wide linear ranges (0.2 μM to 160 μM for paracetamol and 0.2 μM to 300 μM for dopamine) and low detection limits (0.016 μM for paracetamol and 0.013 μM for dopamine). Meanwhile, the proposed sensor still displays high sensitivity, good selectivity and excellent stability.

Cu-MOF-Derived C-Doped CuO/Cu2O Hollow Nano-Octahedrons for Room-Temperature NO2 Sensing at the ppb Level

Chaofan Ma,Qun Yang,Huiyu Su,Huimin Yang,Xiaoxia Wang,Dawen Zeng

P-type semiconductors [copper oxide (CuO) and cuprous oxide (Cu2O)] have been widely researched as good gas sensing materials due to their unique oxygen adsorption properties. In this work, C-doped CuO/Cu2O hollow nano-octahedrons have been prepared by thermal decomposition of the Cu-based metal–organic framework ([Cu3(BTC)2]n). The CuO and Cu2O nanoparticles form nano-octahedron heterojunctions by a close packing mode. A large number of active heterojunction sites were exposed, which significantly increased the adsorbed oxygen (O2–) content. Meanwhile, doping C in the lattice of the heterojunction effectively reduces the band gap of CuO/Cu2O and promotes the chemical reaction of the target gas on the surface of the material. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the CuO/Cu2O heterojunction has strong adsorption ability for NO2. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy further reveals that C-doped CuO/Cu2O hollow nano-octahedrons-40 min heterojunction has the best electron transport performance. The sensors have good gas sensing response (22.88–50 ppm) and selectivity to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at room temperature (28 °C). In addition, the sensor has extremely low detection, which can detect parts per billion level NO2 (20.50% to 100 ppb). It is expected to provide a reference for the development of a room-temperature NO2 sensor.
