Electrochemical production of ammonia: Nitrate reduction over novel Cu-Ni-Al metallic glass nanoparticles used as highly active and durable catalyst

Yang Liu,Shuyu Niu,Yu Zou,Shenglong Huang,Yunxuan Shi,Shuyan Gao,Panagiotis Tsiakaras

It is a great challenge to design and synthesize catalysts that can regulate both adsorption and desorption processes for electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia (NRA). Herein, amorphous Cu-Ni-Al nanometallic glasses (NG) were synthesized using a facile thermal evaporation coupled Joule heating method. The Cu 50 Ni 25 Al 25 -NG exhibits remarkable Faradaic efficiency (98.81 %) and NH 3 yield-rate (211.14 μmol h −1 cm −2 ) at an outstanding positive potential of −0.15 V vs. RHE. Aluminum atoms of low work-function when intercalated at different positions in Cu 50 Ni 25 Al 25 -NG enhance both adsorption and desorption processes during NRA. The oscillatory properties of surface potential detected by Kelvin-probe force microscopy demonstrate the diversity of active sites on Cu 50 Ni 25 Al 25 -NG. Two potential-regulated reaction mechanisms in NRA on the surface of Cu 50 Ni 25 Al 25 -NG were proposed using in-situ electrochemical Raman spectra. This work provides a new method for the preparation of multi-element NG enriched with low work-function metals and a new idea for the synthesis of synergistic catalytic-sites for NRAs.

Facile construction of tourmaline/carbon-supported Cu-Ni/ZrO2 for efficient catalytic hydrogenation of levulinic acid via activating aqueous-phase system

Ying Zhu,Furui Hu,Zi Yu,Yongxin Liang,Tao Gan,Huayu Hu,Zuqiang Huang,Yanjuan Zhang

The activation of reaction system for high-efficiency hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) into γ-valerolactone (GVL) is significant for sustainable development of biomass. Herein, based on a strategy of tourmaline (TM)-activated aqueous-phase system, a Cu-Ni/ZrO 2 @TM/C catalyst was facilely constructed by a totally solid-phase method. Cu-Ni/ZrO 2 @TM/C exhibited outstanding catalytic performance, benefiting from the spontaneous polarization and far-infrared radiation characteristics of tourmaline and the strong metal–metal and metal–support interactions. Under the optimum reaction conditions of 180 °C, 150 min, and 1.5 MPa H 2 , 100.0 % of LA conversion and 93.0 % of GVL yield were achieved. A variety of tests and theoretical calculations confirm that tourmaline with spontaneously polarized electric field and far-infrared radiation can break intermolecular hydrogen bonds to form small water clusters for activating aqueous-phase environment, facilitating the transport of active species as well as greatly reducing the hydrogenation barrier. The activating water effect of tourmaline, the acid sites and oxygen vacancies of ZrO 2 , and the alloying structure of Cu-Ni bimetal can synergistically benefit the transport of active species for reinforcing water-assisted proton hopping. Moreover, a reasonable tourmaline-activated aqueous-phase system was proposed to explain the enhanced aqueous hydrogenation of LA. This study innovatively illuminates the construction of functional non-precious metal catalysts for efficient aqueous-phase hydrogenation of biomass-derived chemicals.

Simultaneous Enhancement in Mechanical and Physical Properties of Boron Nitride Nanosheet/Cu–Ni Composites Enabled by In Situ CVD-Assisted Processing

Sun Siyu,Zhu Shaoqiang,Zhang Xiang,Zhao Dongdong,Rong Xudong,He Chunnian,Zhao Naiqin

The rapid expansion of marine industries has created an urgent demand for advanced engineering materials with superior multifunctional performance. While Cu–Ni alloys demonstrate favorable stability and tribological characteristics, their practical applications are constrained by compromised thermal conductivity and insufficient mechanical strength due to the solid solution of a high amount of Ni in the Cu matrix. Cu–Ni matrix composites reinforced with hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) have garnered significant attention due to their potential for tailored mechanical and thermal properties. However, challenges such as BN agglomerations in Cu–Ni matrix and poor interfacial bonding hinder their practical applications. To address these limitations, this study proposes an innovative fabrication strategy for boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) reinforced Cu–Ni composites by integrating the in situ synthesis of BNNSs on Cu powders via chemical vapor deposition with powder metallurgy. Benefited by the in situ strategy, BNNSs with high crystallinity distribute uniformly within the Cu matrix and have an intimate interfacial bonding without voids or other types of defects. Remarkably, the BNNSs/Cu-30%Ni composite achieves simultaneous enhancement in strength and ductility, exhibiting an ultimate tensile strength of 417 MPa and fracture elongation of 17.5%, representing 30% and 118% improvements over pure Cu–Ni alloys, respectively. This exceptional mechanical synergy originates from threefold strengthening mechanisms: grain refinement, mobile dislocation pinning, and efficient stress transfer via robust interfaces. The microstructural analysis confirms that homogenous distribution of BNNSs optimized stress distribution, mitigating strain localization in the composites. Fractographic examination demonstrates uniformly distributed dimples containing embedded BNNSs, indicative of effective crack bridging and deflection during failure. Furthermore, the composite possesses excellent corrosion resistance comparable to matrix alloys, while achieving 21.23% enhancement in thermal conductivity and 20% reduction in coefficient of friction. The scalable fabrication protocol successfully resolves longstanding challenges in BNNSs dispersion and interfacial bonding, offering a viable pathway for designing high-performance CMCs for marine applications.

Boosting Activity and Stability for the Alkaline Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction via Surface Reconstruction of Cu-Ni Core–Shell Electrocatalysts Through Oxygen Intercalation

Meiling Pan,Wenxin Song,Yiqun Shao,Shuai Wang,Xin Yue,Shaoming Huang

The development of efficient and durable platinum group metal (PGM)-free electrocatalysts for the alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) is critical but remains challenging due to unfavorable hydrogen binding energy (HBE) and hydroxyl binding energy (OHBE) of nickel-based electrocatalysts. Nickel-based catalysts also experience rapid degradation under operating conditions. Herein, we report a surface reconstruction strategy to simultaneously tailor the HBE and OHBE of Cu-Ni core–shell electrocatalysts via nitric acid etching. This process removes the Ni-rich surface layer and induces oxygen intercalation into the top ∼10 atomic layers, accompanied by Cu redistribution near the surface. The resulting oxygen-intercalated surface protects Ni from anodic oxidation, while Cu incorporation stabilizes the bimetallic structure, addressing the stability challenge. The as-prepared electrocatalyst (Cu@O i -NiCu) exhibits a downshifted Ni d -band center that optimizes HBE, while intercalated oxygen modulates orbital alignment and anti-bonding filling to strengthen OHBE. As a result, Cu@O i -NiCu achieved a current density of 2.33 mA cm −2 at an overpotential of 100 mV, and demonstrated a kinetic current density of 5.26 mA cm −2 . Moreover, it maintained 93.5% activity after 10 000 cycles. This work offers a controllable surface-reconstruction route for modulating hydrogen and hydroxyl binding and provides a generalizable strategy for constructing stable HOR catalysts.

Metal selectivity and effects of co-existing ions on the removal of Cd, Cu, Ni, and Cr by ZIF-8-EGCG nanoparticles

Jia Wen,Xiaohong Hu

Recently, the developments of MOFs and their applications on heavy metal removal have attracted much attention. In this paper, we focused on the influence of co-existing ions on the adsorbability of epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) modified ZIF-8 in a multi-metal system (Cd(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), and Cr(VI)). It was found that the adsorption of Cd(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), and Cr(VI) on the ZIF-8-EGCG fitted well with the pseudo second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption selectivity of ZIF-8-EGCG in the mixed metal solution followed the order of Cu(II) ≫ Cr(VI) > Cd(II) > Ni(II). Besides, Cu(II) was the most attractive substance with a maximum capacity of 232.97 mg·g −1 . Copper also disturbed the adsorption of Cd(II) and Ni(II) and contributed the most to the Cr(VI) removal. The natural anions (e.g., Cl − , NO 3 – , AsO 2 − , SO 4 2− ) significantly impeded Cr(VI) adsorption, while low concentrations of natural cations (e.g., K + , Na + , Ca 2+ , and Mg 2+ ) facilitated the adsorption of Cd(II), Cu(II) and Ni(II).

Non-precious Metal Cu-Ni Alloy Nanoparticles Supported on Porous Boron Nitride Fibers as Catalysts for Dehydrogenation from Methanolysis of Ammonia-Borane**

Pengxin Li,Huanzhao Liu,Chunyu Wang,Yi Fang,Zhonglu Guo,Jing Lin,Yang Huang,Chao Yu,Long Hu,Chengchun Tang,Zhenya Liu

Graphical The article reports the successful preparation of Cu 0.9 Ni 0.1 / p -BN nanocomposites as catalyst by a facile in situ reduction method using p -BN as a template. The hollow porous Cu 0.9 Ni 0.1 / p -BN composites exhibited excellent catalytic performance in the dehydrogenation from methanolysis of ammonia-borane. Dehydrogenation from methanolysis of ammonia borane is a promising strategy for the development of sustainable hydrogen energy. Developing an effective and inexpensive catalyst is essential. In our study, a series of Cu−Ni nanoparticles, in the form of alloy, are supported onto porous boron nitride fibers by impregnation reduction. Cu and Ni synergistically interact through the alloys, Cu 0.9 Ni 0.1 / p -BN demonstrates excellent catalytic effect with high turnover frequency (27.1 min −1 ) and low activation energy (27.8 kJ/mol) at 298 K. Kinetics indicates that the catalyst concentration follows the quasi-primary reaction. Moreover, the pores of the p -BN supporter prevent agglomeration of the metal particles while limiting their size, as well as providing protection to the particles. After passing 8 cycles, the catalyst does not suffer from severe poisoning effects. This work greatly enriches the non-precious metal catalyst system and plays a very meaningful role in the study of dehydrogenation from methanolysis of AB.

High-Current-Density Glycerol Electrooxidation on S–Cu–Ni/NF Catalyst: Unveiling the Synergy between S-Promoted GOR and Cu-Inhibited OER

Lixiong Xu,Shuo Geng

Electrocatalytic glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) coupled with hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is an ideal method to achieve efficient hydrogen production. However, realizing the stable degradation of glycerol to formate at high current densities still faces great challenges, mainly stemming from the competition between GOR and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at high potentials. To address this issue, in this study, S–Cu–Ni/NF catalysts were successfully synthesized using Cu–Ni/NF catalysts as precursors. The introduction of Cu effectively suppressed the OER, enabling the catalysts to achieve more than 75% formate Faraday efficiency over a wide potential range from 1.3 V vs RHE to 1.6 V vs RHE. Meanwhile, S doping significantly enhanced the electron transport ability of GOR, enabling the S–Cu–Ni/NF catalyst to achieve a high current density of 100 mA cm–2 at a low potential of 1.395 V vs RHE. In addition, after 24 h of continuous operation at a high current density of 100 mA cm–2, the catalyst potential increased by only 40 mV, demonstrating excellent stability. Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectra (SEM-EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and in situ Raman characterization confirmed that the precipitation of S promoted the formation of the active site NiOOH and its dynamic growth during the GOR process. The present study not only improved the selectivity of formate at high potentials by inhibiting OER but also significantly enhanced the GOR performance, demonstrated the potential of stable degradation of glycerol at high current densities, and provided a feasible strategy for the industrial application of glycerol oxidation coupled with hydrogenolysis.

In-situ growth of scaly carbon nanotube by Cu@Ni core-shell catalyst on continuous carbon fiber surface for multiply tenoned composite interphase

Bowen Cui,Chengguo Wang,Yanxiang Wang,Chengjuan Wang,Haotian Jiang,Mengfan Li,Hongxue Tan,Zhenhao Xu

A core-shell catalyst Cu@Ni was designed on continuous carbon fiber (CF) surface. Cu and Ni were sequentially loaded by dual conversion method, whose contents were optimized to grow novel scaly carbon nanotubes (sCNTs). The additional scale-like graphite pieces contribute to surface area and chemically active graphene edges, endowing sCNT–CF with 125% higher IFSS than original CF (111% for ILSS). Regular CNT–CF is also significantly outperformed by sCNT–CF, both in tensile and interfacial properties . The results of atomic force microscope revealed the tightly integrated sCNT–CF/epoxy interphase based on multiply tenoned effect owing to the “scales”. This advanced multi-scale reinforcement can be produced continuously, hence possesses broad application prospects.

Cu-Ni-CoSex quaternary porous nanocubes as enhanced Pt-free electrocatalysts for highly efficient dye-sensitized solar cells and hydrogen evolution in alkaline medium

Yudi Niu,Xing Qian,Chong Xu,Hongyu Liu,Weimin Wu,Linxi Hou

A series of porous cubic nanomaterials have been prepared through a facile one-step selenylation process, in which Cu-Ni-Co, Ni-Co and Cu-Co Prussian-blue analog nanocubes transformed to Cu-Ni-CoSe x , Ni-CoSe x and Cu-CoSe x nanocubes, respectively. Among these samples, the quaternary porous nanocubes (Cu-Ni-CoSe x ) proved to be the excellent bifunctional electrocatalysts in dye-sensitized solar cells and hydrogen evolution reactions. Under the standard irradiation, Cu-Ni-CoSe x nanocubes exhibited a high power conversion efficiency of 9.74% in solar cells, which was much superior than that of Pt (8.19%). Cu-Ni-CoSe x nanocubes also delivered superb hydrogen evolution performance in terms of a low overpotential (50.2 mV) under the current density of 10 mA cm −2 and a low Tafel slope (49.6 mV dec −1 ) in alkaline medium. The outstanding characteristics of Cu-Ni-CoSe x nanocubes were benefited from their uniform sizes, porous morphologies, high surface area, low charge transfer resistances and good synergies among multiple elements.

Activation of peroxymonosulfate by Cu–Ni–Fe layered double oxides for degradation of butyl 4-hydroxybenzoate: Synergistic effect of oxygen vacancy and Cu(I)

Huiwang Dai,Jingyi Zhu,Fanxu Meng,Daohui Lin,Wenjun Zhou,Dingjiang Chen,Ming Zhang,Qingqing Wang

In this study, Cu hybridization coupling oxygen defect engineering was adopted to synthesis of CuNiFe layered double oxides (CuNiFe-LDOs) in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for degradation of methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate. The morphology and crystal structure of CuNiFe-LDOs was characterized in detail, which exhibited regular layered-structure at a Cu:Ni doping ratio of 1:1 and annealing temperature of 400 °C, and presented the crystal of Cu x O@Fe 3 O 4 –NiO. Besides, the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results demonstrated that abundant oxygen vacancies (OVs) and low oxidation state Cu species were composed in CuNiFe-LDOs400. The Cu 1·5 Ni 1·5 Fe 1 -LDOs400/PMS system showed excellent catalytic performance toward the degradation of butyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (BuP), and resistant to the effect of pH value and background inorganic anions. Based on quenching experiments and EPR measurements, singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) was identified as the dominant active species during the heterogeneous catalytic process, which was generated by the synergistic interaction between OVs-Cu(I) site and PMS . In this process, the electron-drawing property of OVs promoted the adsorption of PMS molecule on Cu(I) site, followed by the accumulation of electron and cleavage of O–O bond to generate intermediate oxygen radical species, which donated one electron to eventually generate singlet oxygen.

Efficient and stable Cu-Ni/ZrO2 catalysts for in situ hydrogenation and deoxygenation of oleic acid into heptadecane using methanol as a hydrogen donor

Zihao Zhang,Hao Chen,Changxue Wang,Kequan Chen,Xiuyang Lu,Pingkai Ouyang,Jie Fu

In this work, a series of ZrO 2 -supported Cu, Ni and bimetallic Cu-Ni catalysts were synthesized and evaluated for their activity and stability in the in situ hydrogenation and decarboxylation of oleic acid using methanol as a hydrogen donor. High-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HADDF-STEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS-mapping), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and temperature programmed reduction (TPR) characterizations revealed that the as-synthesized Cu-Ni/ZrO 2 was a Cu-Ni alloy that was highly dispersed on mixed m-ZrO 2 and t-ZrO 2 . The bimetallic Cu-Ni/ZrO 2 nanostructures not only exhibited better catalytic activity for the conversion of oleic acid compared to monometallic Cu/ZrO 2 and Ni/ZrO 2 catalysts but also demonstrated good reuse performance. The formation of the Cu-Ni alloy facilitated the decarboxylation reaction and inhibited the cracking reaction, leading to enhanced catalytic performance. The good stability of Cu-Ni/ZrO 2 was primarily due to the good hydrothermal stability of the ZrO 2 support.

Rapid Analysis of Chemical Oxygen Demand by Using a SPE Sensor Based on rGO/Cu/Ni Composite Catalyst Synthesized via One-Step Chemical Reduction

Yu Zhou,Kaixin Zheng,Yihao Zhang,Yong Zhao,Zhi Ouyang,Xu Zhang,Xianhua Liu

Black-odorous water (BOW) in urban areas poses significant risks to water safety and human health. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) is a critical parameter for the control and monitoring of BOW. However, traditional methods for COD determination are expensive, time-consuming, and involve the use of hazardous chemicals. In this study, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and transitional metal particles (Cu, Ni) were used as working electrode materials for facile on-site determination of COD in BOW. Three composite materials (rGO/Cu, rGO/Ni, and rGO/Cu/Ni) were synthesized by one-step chemical reduction with different ratios, and their microstructure and chemical composition were characterized. Glucose solution and real water were used to evaluate the electrocatalytic performance of the different sensors. The ternary composite (rGO/Cu/Ni) screen-printed electrode sensor demonstrated excellent performance in COD analysis, with a low limit of detection (18.9 mg L−1), a broad linear detection range from 53 to 1500 mg L−1, and a 1.61% relative error for real water samples. The testing results were highly consistent with those obtained using the standard chromium sulfate method. This study offers promising prospects for the mass production of cost-effective COD electrochemical sensors, facilitating real-time, on-site monitoring of water bodies in major urban areas.
