Novel nanoplatform with excellent photothermal conversion and temperature feedback are preferable in clinical photothermal therapy (PTT). In this work, a hybrid of NaYF 4 :Er 3+ ,Yb 3+ @NaYF 4 upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) conjugated with gold nanorods (GNRs) was fabricated in order to achieve effective photothermal conversion and excellent temperature detection. In this nanoplatform, the GNRs as photo-activated nano-heaters could effectively convert the 808 nm photoenergy into heat, meanwhile UCNPs as 980 nm triggered temperature probe could read the temperature in an exact microdomain where the nanocomposite was located at. The effects of excitation source, GNRs concentration and power density on photothermal conversion were investigated. In addition, the difference between eigen temperature of nanoparticles and solution temperature, and the potential for temperature feedback were analyzed under double lasers excitation. Moreover, the photothermal conversion efficiency was experimentally confirmed from thermodynamic analysis. It was found that the nanocomposite can be an excellent nanoplatform for potential application in advanced PTT.

A series of Sr 2.99-x (PO 4 ) 2 :.01Er 3+ /xYb 3+ ( x = .02, .04, .06, .08, .10) phosphors in the presence of impurity Tm 3+ were synthesized by high temperature solid-state method, and X-ray diffraction results show that these samples are pure R-3 m(166) space group phase. The upconversion luminescence (UCL) of Er 3+ and impurity Tm 3+ under 980-nm laser excitation were investigated, and the results show that the intense blue UCL of impurity Tm 3+ and thermal enhancement of 2 H 11/2 → 4 I 15/2 of Er 3+ simultaneously exist. When Er 3+ doping concentration is kept at .01, both the blue UCL intensity of impurity Tm 3+ and green and red UCL intensity of Er 3+ reach the maximum at Yb 3+ doping concentration of .08. The thermal enhancement effect of 2 H 11/2 → 4 I 15/2 of Er 3+ was observed as high as 3.27 times from 303 to 723 K, which is because of lattice distortion and phonon-assisted transition. In addition, the optical temperature performance of Sr 2.91 (PO 4 ) 2 :.01Er 3+ /.08Yb 3+ sample was studied, and the maximum absolute temperature sensitivity was calculated as .00623 K −1 at 538 K. This study suggests that Sr 3 (PO 4 ) 2 :Er 3+ /Yb 3+ phosphors in the presence of impurity Tm 3+ have a promising application prospect as optical temperature sensor at high temperature.

One-dimensional (1D) Y 2 Zr 2 O 7 :Er/Yb tube-in-tube nanostructures were prepared via a simple electrospinning technique with a single nozzle. The diameter of the outer tube of the Y 2 Zr 2 O 7 :Er/Yb tube-in-tube nanostructures is 190–170 nm, the thickness of the outer wall is 22–20 nm, the diameter of the inner tube is 120–100 nm, and the wall thickness of the inner tube is 17–14 nm. The optical properties of the Y 2 Zr 2 O 7 :Er/Yb tube-in-tube nanostructures, including the up-conversion and downshifting luminescence spectra, temperature sensitivity, and thermochromic properties, were studied in detail. Under 980 nm excitation, two weak green emissions at 528 nm and 550 nm, as well as a strong red emission at 650 nm of Er ions, are presented. When excited at 378 nm, the Er ions exhibit strong green emission at 545 nm, two weak red emission peaks at 650 and 680 nm, and near-infrared emission peaks at 1400–1600 nm. With increasing environmental temperature, the luminescence color of the 1D Y 2 Zr 2 O 7 :Er/Yb tube-in-tube nanostructures exhibited a transition from “orange→yellow→ green” when excited at 980 nm. For the 1D Y 2 Zr 2 O 7 :xEr/yYb tube-in-tube nanostructures (x = 0.01, 0.02, 0.03; y = 0.05, 0.10, 0.15), the maximum values of S r are 2.3 % K −1 under 980 nm excitation and 2.1%K −1 under 378 nm excitation within the temperature range of 303–723 K. This work develops integrated multifunctional optical materials and provides an alternative approach for the fabrication of nanoscale smart platforms, advanced displays, and applications in information security.

Highly crystallized micro/nano-sized Y2O2S and RE (Eu3+, Yb3+/Er3+) doped samples were prepared through a one-pot mild (200–250 °C) solvothermal method. By simply adjusting the amount of initial sulfur powder, the morphology and assembled nano-structures could be well controlled. With varying concentration of sulfur powder from 0.08 M to 0.8 M, the morphology and size of the target products varied from 20 nm nanosheets, 2 μm sheet-assembled plates/flowers to 1.5 μm nano-assembled spheres. The luminescence properties of Eu3+ doped Y2O2S with different morphologies were studied. The excitation peak above 300 nm ascribed to S2−–Eu3+ charge transfer showed a blue shift of 9 nm compared with the bulk sample. When co-doped with Yb3+/Er3+, the Y2O2S:Yb3+, Er3+ nano-aggregates exhibited a tunable emission under 980 nm laser excitation, shifting from greenish-yellow to orange-yellow, with increasing Yb3+/Er3+ ratio.

Although rare-earth (RE 3+ )-doped negative thermal expansion (NTE) luminescent materials exhibit promising anti-thermal quenching effects, limited progress has been made in modifying their NTE and luminescence performances. This study investigates the impacts of Mo 6+ ion stoichiometry on the crystal structure, NTE behavior, and photoluminescence (PL) thermal response characteristics in Er 3+ , Yb 3+ co-doped Sc 2 Mo 3(1+x) O 12 phosphors (−0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.1). The results reveal that augmenting the Mo 6+ content results in a transition from three-dimensional to two-dimensional NTE behavior in the host material due to the change in steric hindrance. This transition modulates cross-relaxation and back energy transfer processes between the doped Er 3+ and Yb 3+ ions. Consequently, the thermal enhancement factor for the upconversion luminescence of Er 3+ ions decreases with increasing Mo 6+ content, whereas the factor for near-infrared downshifting luminescence increases. Additionally, using the luminescence intensity ratio between the 1550 nm emission of Er 3+ and the 1050 nm emission of Yb 3+ for temperature sensing, a maximum relative sensitivity of 3.97 % K −1 is achieved in Sc 2 Mo 3.21 O 12 : Er 3+ , Yb 3+ . These findings provide insights into the synchronous regulation of the NTE and luminescence properties of RE 3+ -doped NTE phosphors for versatile applications.

A serious of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped Cs 2 Bi 2 Sr(P 2 O 7 )(PO 4 ) 2 (CBSPO) phosphors are prepared by solid phase reaction method, and the related thermal enhancement of up-conversion luminescence (UCL) are studied in depth under 980 and 1550 nm laser excitations. When doping concentration of Er 3+ is fixed at 0.1, and doping concentration of Yb 3+ is adjusted to improve the thermal enhancement effect in the temperature range from 303 to 723 K. The optimal doping concentrations of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ are found as 0.1 and 0.5, and the maximum enhancement of green UCL emission reaches 5.25 and 16.74 times under 980 and 1550 nm laser excitations, respectively. This is because of the combined action of electronic thermal agitation, phonon assisted transition and lattice distortion of doping Er 3+ sites. The change of structure with temperature is studied by variable temperature XRD. Additionally, based on FIR technique, the absolute sensitivity of 0.00955 K −1 at 557 K, 0.00643 K −1 at 509 K are got in CBSPO:0.1Er 3+ /0.3Yb 3+ under 980 nm laser excitation and in CBSPO:0.1Er 3+ /0.4Yb 3+ under 1550 nm laser excitation, respectively. The structure changes of polyphosphate with temperature provide new ideas for development of thermally enhanced up-conversion phosphors, which can be applied as optical thermometer at high temperature environment.
