Micro-nanobubbles (MNBs), as an emerging environmental-friendly technology, have shown great potential in enhancing advanced oxidation processes for water treatment. This study innovatively integrated MNBs with a biochar-supported cobalt-iron catalyst (CoFe/BC) and persulfate (PDS) system, creating a novel synergistic approach for tetracycline (TC) degradation. The CoFe/BC+PDS+MNB system achieved 95.63% TC degradation efficiency under optimized conditions (50 mg/L catalyst, 30 mg/L TC, 400 mg/L PDS), outperforming the conventional system with half the catalyst. While CO 3 2- and HCO 3 - inhibited TC degradation, NO 3 - , H 2 PO 4 - , and humic acid showed minimal interference. Mechanistic studies revealed that singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), sulfate radicals (SO 4 •- ), and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) were the primary reactive species. MNBs facilitated electron transfer between dissolved oxygen (DO) and CoFe/BC, while bubble collapse generated localized •OH hotspots. Electrostatic attraction between MNBs and CoFe/BC under acidic conditions (pH 3-6.2) improved DO conversion efficiency, while MNB stability at neutral-alkaline pH ensured sustained degradation (>91% at pH 7-9). Despite pH sensitivity, the synergistic effect maintained efficient degradation across a broad pH range. This study demonstrates the potential of MNBs integration in persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes for water treatment applications.

Two-dimensional van der Waals heterojunctions (2D vdWHs) have garnered significant interest owing to their ability of efficiently interfacial electron transfer, tunable band structures, and high structural stability. Nevertheless, the utilization of 2D vdWHs as multifunctional electrocatalysts is still rarely explored. In this work, we synthesized a 30% FeCo LDH/TiN/NC electrocatalyst via high-temperature solid-state and hydrothermal methods, featuring a 2D vdWH architecture in which FeCo LDH nanosheets are uniformly anchored onto the TiN/NC substrate. The resulting electrocatalyst exhibits remarkable trifunctional activity and stability for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), comparable to those of commercial catalysts. The superior electrocatalytic performance is attributed to the interfacial electron redistribution, in which the electron transfer from TiN/NC to FeCo LDH enhances charge transfer kinetics and increases the number of active sites during electrochemical reactions. Moreover, the 30% FeCo LDH/TiN/NC electrocatalyst shows great promise for applications in both zinc-air batteries (ZABs) and overall water splitting. This study underscores the potential of 2D vdWHs and offers valuable insights for the design of advanced multifunctional electrocatalysts.

The content of antioxidants in food is related to the dietary safety of consumers. In this context, two dimensional (2D) iron/cobalt metal nanosheets (Fe/Co NSs) are synthesized through the synergistic self-assembly reaction of Fe3+/Co2+ with terephthalic acid. This Fe/Co NSs exhibit excellent peroxidase-like activities. Based on nanozyme property of Fe/Co NSs, three-channel sensor array based on Fe/Co NSs nanozyme is constructed using 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) as colorimetric substrate and three wavelengths (370, 456, and 654 nm) as array’s channels, enabling distinct absorbance response signals for the identification of five antioxidants with a 100% accuracy. The sensor array is able to accurately detect the five antioxidants in the range of 100 nM-100 μM, achieving accurate quantitative analysis. The sensor array also has excellent anti-interference ability to other interferents even at high concentration. These abilities endow the sensor array with great potentials for discrimination of blind and actual antioxidant samples.

Developing high-activity, low-cost and stable multifunctional electrocatalysts remains crucial yet challenging for advancing energy technologies. Zn offers unique advantages for achieving high-performance electrocatalysts due to its low electronegativity—favourable for electronic modulation—and its low boiling point, which facilitates engineering during the synthesis process. Leveraging these dual characteristics, we computationally predicted the effects of Zn doping and rationally designed a Zn-doped FeCo alloy anchored on hierarchically porous carbon nanofiber with a protective surface carbon film (Zn-FeCo@CNF-900). Density functional theory calculations further reveal that Zn-induced charge transfer to Fe/Co, along with the lowering of the d-band centre, optimises the adsorption energies of key reaction intermediates. Simultaneously, pore formation during calcination enhances mass and electron transport, while the carbon film stabilises active sites. Benefitting from this synergistic modulation, the resulting Zn-FeCo@CNF-900 exhibits an outstanding half-wave potential of 0.84 V for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and an overpotential of 268 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In a Zn–air battery (ZAB), Zn-FeCo@CNF-900 delivers exceptional stability (>600 h) and a high-power density of 195 mW cm −2 . Furthermore, this multifunctional electrocatalyst enables a ZAB-driven overall water splitting system. This study integrates computational design with experimental validation to develop high-performance multifunctional electrocatalysts through targeted electronic and structural engineering.

With the aim to obtain microwave (MW) absorber possessing simultaneous light weight and broad absorption bandwidth, FeCo imbedded 3D porous carbon network microspheres (3DC@FeCo) were synthesized via spray-drying followed by calcination processes. 3DC@FeCo exhibits 3D porous carbon microspheres structure with submicrometer-sized macropores. The FeCo imbedded carbon structure not only restrains the growth and agglomeration of FeCo nanoparticles, but also effectively introduces polarization and suppresses the skin effect from FeCo. In addition, the 3D porous carbon microspheres provide more channels which enhance the multiple reflection for microwave. The microwave absorption performance of 3DC@FeCo can be adjusted through changing the carbonization temperature, and the sample after carbonized at 630 °C (3DC@FeCo-630) shows the best microwave absorption property. It is worth mentioning that there is only 21.8 wt% FeCo in 3DC@FeCo, indicating that the 3DC@FeCo microspheres proposed in this study are one kind of lightweight microwave absorbers. The minimum reflection loss (RL) value of 3DC@FeCo-630 is − 47.4 dB at 6.35 GHz and the effective absorption bandwidth (RL < − 10 dB) can reach up 5.66 GHz (12.08–17.74 GHz) with the matching thickness of only 2.7 mm. The excellent microwave absorption ability can be attributed to favorable impedance matching, strong dielectric loss, magnetic loss, FeCo imbedded carbon and unique 3D porous structure. 3DC@FeCo microspheres as broadband and lightweight microwave absorbers exhibit a promising prospect applied in complex electromagnetic environments.

FeCo-based non-noble metal electrocatalysts (NNMEs) of FeCo/MCS-NPCS was fabricated by immobilization of hemin on mesoporous carbon shells modified N-doped porous carbon spheres (MCS-NPCS). The obtained FeCo/MCS-NPCS exhibits a half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.851 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE) and a limited-diffusion current density (J L ) of 5.45 mA cm −2 . In addition, FeCo/MCS-NPCS shows comparable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performances to 20 wt% Pt/C in terms of E 1/2 and J L and better electrochemical properties, including the methanol tolerance and durability in alkaline solution. Such outstanding electrochemical activities of FeCo/MCS-NPCS can be ascribed to Fe and/or Co-based nitrides and carbides as well as N-doped carbon matrixes modified with mesoporous carbon shells. This research introduces a promising path to design and synthesize highly efficient FeCo–N–C electrocatalysts towards ORR.

The design of catalysts with tunable active sites in heterogeneous interface structures is crucial for addressing challenges in the water-splitting process. Herein, a hollow spherical heterostructure FeCo-P is successfully prepared by hydrothermal and phosphorization methods. This hollow structure, along with the heterogeneous interface between Co 2 P and FeP, not only facilitates the exposure of more active sites, but also increases the contact area between the catalyst and the electrolyte, as well as shortens the distance for mass/electron transfer. This enhancement promotes electron transfer to facilitate water decomposition. FeCo-P exhibits excellent hydrogen evolution (HER) and oxygen evolution (OER) performance when reaching @ 10 mA cm −2 in 1 mol L −1 KOH, with overpotentials of 131/240 mV for HER/OER. Furthermore, when FeCo-P is used as both the cathode and anode for overall water splitting (OWS), it only requires low voltages of 1.49, 1.55, and 1.57 V to achieve CDs of 10, 100, and 300 mA cm −2 , respectively. Density functional theory calculations indicate that constructing a Co 2 P and FeP heterogeneous interface with good lattice matching can facilitate electron redistribution, thereby enhancing the electrocatalytic performance of OWS. This work opens up new possibilities for the rational design of efficient water electrolysis catalysts derived from MOFs.

Oxygen vacancies (O v ) can improve the electronic structure of catalyst, thus enhancing catalyst activity and reducing metal leaching . In this work, an O v -enriched FeCo bimetallic catalyst (3DOM FeCo) was designed and prepared. The presence of abundant O v was observed by Raman measurements and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) indicated the improvement of electrochemical and photochemical properties of 3DOM FeCo by O v . The function of O v as the main active site for PMS adsorption and activation were proved by XPS analysis and density functional theory (DFT). With the superior properties modified by O v , 3DOM FeCo achieved 100% APAP degradation and 50% mineralization within 60 min. And 3DOM FeCo/PMS system was effective and adaptable in different pH values and real water samples. This work made great efforts in continuously improving catalytic efficiency and solving secondary pollution problems.

Zn-air battery, like other electrochemical power devices such as fuel cells, has the advantages of environmental friendliness and high energy convert efficiency. One of the main problems facing Zn-air battery is how to improve the electrocatalytic activity of the cathode catalyst with low cost and simple preparation process. Herein, N-doped carbon nanosheets/nanotubes composite loaded Fe-Co nanoparticles were prepared via a facile pyrolysis of the solid mixture composed of dicyandiamide, sucrose, cobalt nitrate, iron nitrate, iron phthalocyanine (FePc) and cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc). The samples were well characterized and their electroactivity towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was tested in a full pH range including acidic, neutral and alkaline media. In 0.1 mol l−1 KOH solution, the ORR onset potential and half-wave potential of the FeCo-FePc/NTu-CNsh are 1.03 V and 0.91 V, which are very close to the performance of commercial Pt/C catalyst (40%). In neutral solution (1 M KCl+4 M NH4Cl), FeCo-FePc/NTu-CNsh presents an ORR onset potential of 0.93 V and half-wave potential of 0.82 V, which are superior to Pt/C with onset potential of 0.92 V and half-wave potential of 0.81 V. The home-made Zn-air battery with the prepared samples as the cathodic catalysts reveal excellent performance, and the FeCo-FePc/NTu-CNsh Zn-air battery presents a maximum power density of 281.8 mW·cm−2 as well as the high stability at different discharging current densities.

Ferromagnetic metal/alloy particles are widely used in the field of electromagnetic wave absorption. Doping is an effective means of modulating the electromagnetic properties of magnetic metals and alloys. In this study, (Fe 3 Co 7 ) 1−x Ru x nanoparticles with different Ru doping contents are prepared using a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-assisted liquid-phase reduction process. First-principles calculations reveal that strong electron-orbit hybridization occurs between Ru-4 d and Fe/Co-3 d owing to the strong spin-orbit coupling effect of Ru-4 d orbital electrons. This generates a space charge distribution and carries a magnetic moment of 1.80 hbar/2. The use of Ru doping results in a reduction in FeCo alloy particle size from 1.5 µm to 200 nm, slight decrease in the saturation magnetization from 179 to 152 emu/g, and increase in the electrical conductivity from 2.79 × 10 -4 to 6.62 × 10 -4 S·cm -1 . The dielectric and magnetic loss values vary from 0.22 to 0.95 and 0.06–0.37, respectively, in the 2–18 GHz frequency range. Ru doping-induced dipole polarization relaxation, exchange resonance, and increased conductivity loss are the primary reasons for the enhanced electromagnetic loss of the material. When the level of Ru doping x reaches 0.10, the minimum reflection loss (RL min ) increases from − 21.5 to − 41.9 dB. Thus, (Fe 3 Co 7 ) 1−x Ru x is a promising material for electromagnetic loss due to its tunable composition, size, conductivity, magnetic properties , and excellent electromagnetic loss capability.

The introduction of magnetic materials into carbon materials has been proved to be an effective approach to tailor and improve electromagnetic wave (EM) absorption. In this study, coal-based carbon/FeCo (CBC/FeCo) magnetic composites were designed and prepared. These samples exhibit layered stripes similar to graphite. In these novel composites, the FeCo alloy exhibits strong magnetic loss and the coal-based carbon (CBC) not only acts as an impedance matching medium but also exhibits excellent dielectric loss. Therefore, the CBC/FeCo composites exhibit strong EM absorption, with minimum reflection loss ( RL min ) of −60.81 and −49.82 dB at thicknesses ( d ) of 1.38 and 2.45 mm, respectively. Compared with pure coal-based carbon and FeCo alloy, the improvement in EM absorption can be mainly attributed to the improved impedance matching and enhanced multiple interfacial polarization . In addition, the effects of reaction temperature and the content of FeCo on EM absorption performance of the composites were also studied. Specifically, samples of S-2 with process temperature at 800 °C for 2 h and the FeCo alloy mass loading was 0.3 g (CBC/FeCo-0.3), the EM absorption performance was optimized. It is believed that the CBC/FeCo composites could be promising candidates for EM absorbers.

Very few MOF-related derivatives have been applied for sensors. Sensitive analysis of antibiotics in food products is one of the crucial research fields. The work described the synthesis of magnetic electrocatalyst with FeCo alloy nanoparticles confined in S, N-doped bamboo-like carbon nanotubes (FeCo@S,N-CNTs) by using bimetallic MOF as precursor. For comparison, a series of materials were prepared and used to modify screen-printed electrode (SPE). Their electrocatalytic capacities were investigated for the electrochemical reduction of two antibiotics, chloramphenicol (CAP) and nitrofurantoin (NFT). By using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), the magnetic FeCo@S,N-CNTs was found to possess the better electrocatalysis. Using the disposable FeCo@S,N-CNTs/SPE constructed by magnetic control, simultaneous analysis of CAP and NFT was achieved in linear ranges of 0.05–320.0 μM and 0.01–75.0 μM with the limit of detection of 20.0 nM and 3.5 nM, respectively. The real sample detection validated the practicability of FeCo@S,N-CNTs/SPE.
