Jackfruit-like ZnO gas sensor for monitoring ethyl formate emissions from fish meal

Zhaopeng Li,Pei Li,Peisi Yin,Xin Zhao,Yangting Hu,Fei Sun,Xia Sun,Zhenhe Wang

Purpose This paper aims to develop a highly sensitive resistive gas sensor for accurately detecting ethyl formate to achieve reliable and real-time monitoring of fish meal spoilage. Design/methodology/approach Based on the one-step solvothermal reduction method, in a specific triethylene glycol solution environment and high temperature, the 3D ZnO sensing material with a jackfruit-like structure was prepared for detecting ethyl formate gas in fish meal. Findings The gas sensor based on 3D ZnO displays high sensor response (69.68–100 ppm) at 280°C and 43% RH and good sensor response (12.18–100 ppm) at 280°C and 80% RH, ultra-low detection limit of 10 ppb at 43% RH, excellent selectivity, repeatability and long-term stability. The sensing mechanism is due to the gain or loss of electrons caused by the sensor surface reaction. The unique jackfruit-like structure, abundant oxygen vacancies and large surface area may be another factor contributing to its excellent ethyl formate gas sensing performance. Originality/value The authors first developed an ethyl formate gas sensor, and the results were compared with the previously published data. The analysis showed the ZnO gas sensor demonstrated excellent sensing performance. This work highlights the potential of high response ethyl formate gas sensors to accurately evaluate fish meal quality.

Effect of protein oxidation on the structure and emulsifying properties of fish gelatin

Wanjun Xu,Yulong Bao,Yue Zhou,Hui Hong,Ruichang Gao

This study aimed to investigate the effect of oxidation on fish gelatin and its emulsifying properties. Fish gelatin was oxidized with varying concentrations of H 2 O 2 (0–30 mM). Increased concentrations of the oxidant led to a decrease in amino acids in the gelatin, including glycine, lysine, and arginine. Additionally, the relative content of ordered secondary structure and triple helix fractions decreased. Zeta potential decreased, while particle size, surface hydrophobicity, and water contact angle increased. Regarding emulsifying behavior, oxidation promoted the adsorption of gelatin to the oil–water interface and reduced interfacial tension. With increased degrees of oxidation, the zeta potential and size of the emulsion droplets decreased. The oxidized gelatin exhibited better emulsifying activity but worse emulsifying stability. Based on these results, a mechanism for how oxidation affects the emulsifying properties of gelatin was proposed: the increase in gelatin’s hydrophobicity and the decrease in triple helix structure induced by oxidation reduced the interfacial tension at the oil–water interface. This promoted protein adsorption at the oil–water interface, allowing the formation of smaller oil droplets and enhancing gelatin’s emulsifying activity. However, the decrease in electrostatic repulsion between emulsion droplets and the decrease in solution viscosity increased the flocculation and aggregation of oil droplets, ultimately weakening the emulsifying stability of gelatin.

Gelatin molecular structures affect behaviors of fish oil-loaded traditional and Pickering emulsions

Mengzhen Ding,Ting Zhang,Huan Zhang,Ningping Tao,Xichang Wang,Jian Zhong

As the differences of traditional and Pickering emulsions might have resulted from stabilizer structures, this study analyzes the effects of gelatin molecular structures (uncrosslinked molecules vs. crosslinked molecules) on the preparation, long-term storage, and dilution of fish oil-loaded traditional and Pickering emulsions. Both traditional and Pickering emulsions have three types of droplets with different sizes, and all the droplet sizes were exponentially decreased with the increase of stabilizer concentration. Pickering emulsions have slightly lower droplet sizes compared with traditional emulsions. Traditional emulsions have three different emulsion forms (liquid, redispersible emulsion gel, and unredispersible emulsion gel), whereas Pickering emulsions only have the liquid form. Emulsion creaming stability was dependent on stabilizer molecular structures and stabilizer concentrations. The two emulsions have similar and good dilution stability. This work demonstrates that gelatin molecular structures affect droplet size, emulsion forms, and creaming stability, but not droplet size types and emulsion dilution stability.

Electric-Fish-Inspired Thin Hydrogel Electrocytes Achieve High Power Density and Environmental Robustness

Dor Tillinger,Wonbae Lee,Haley M. Tholen,Derek M. Hall,Joseph S. Najem

Electric-fish-inspired hydrogel-based power sources offer a promising platform for powering soft, wearable, and implantable electronics due to their compliance, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. They typically consist of high- and low-salinity gel layers separated by anion- and cation-selective gel compartments, generating an electric potential that emulates the diffusion-based energy mechanisms of electrocytes in electric fish. However, their development has been hindered by high internal resistance, limited power density, and poor environmental stability. Here, a scalable layer-by-layer spin-coating strategy is introduced to fabricate hydrogel electrocytes with precise thickness control, yielding 106.1 µm-thick units comparable to biological electrocytes. This thin architecture significantly reduces resistance and enables high instantaneous power density (44.0 kW m −3 ) with low area-normalized resistance (2.0 × 10 −3 Ω m 2 .). By tailoring the hydrogel composition with a glycerol–carboxylated chitosan mixture, long-term hydration (>98.7% after 120 h at 60% RH) and antifreezing performance down to −80 °C are achieved without encapsulation. Furthermore, varying layer thickness provides tunable energy density, while integration of PEDOT:PSS hydrogel electrodes preserves material compliance and yields robust, ready-to-use power systems. These advances overcome critical barriers in hydrogel-based energy storage, establishing a versatile, scalable pathway toward stable, bioinspired power sources for next-generation wearable, implantable, and autonomous devices.

Label-Free Fluorescence-Based Aptasensor for the Detection of Sulfadimethoxine in Water and Fish

Xiang-Xiu Chen,Zheng-Zhong Lin,Cheng-Yi Hong,Hui-Ping Zhong,Qiu-Hong Yao,Zhi-Yong Huang

Fluorescence-based aptasensors possess high sensitivity but are complicated and usually require multistep labeling and modification in method design, which severely limit the practical applications. Here, a label-free fluorescence-based aptasensor, consisting of aptamer, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), and cadmium telluride (CdTe) quantum dots (QDs), was developed for the detection of sulfadimethoxine (SDM) in water and fish based on the specific recognition of SDM-aptamer and the inner filter effect of QDs and AuNPs. In the absence of a target, AuNPs dispersed in salt solution because of the aptamer protection, which could effectively quench the fluorescence emission of QDs, while in the presence of SDM, AuNPs aggregated due to the specific recognition of SDM-aptamer to SDM, which resulted in fluorescence recovery. A linear response of SDM concentrations in the range of 10–250 ng mL−1 (R2 = 0.99) was obtained, and the detection limit was 1.54 ng mL−1 (3σ, n = 9), far below the maximum residue limit (100 ng mL−1) of SDM in edible animal tissues regulated by China and the European Commission. The fluorescence-based aptasensor was applied to the detection of SDM in aquaculture water and fish samples with high accuracy, excellent precision, and ideal selectivity. The results indicated that the developed aptasensor was simple in design, easy to operate, and could be used to detect rapidly and accurately SDM in water and fish samples.

Changes in Ploidy Drive Reproduction Transition and Genomic Diversity in a Polyploid Fish Complex

Lu Meng,Li Zhi,Zhu Zi-Yu,Peng Fang,Wang Yang,Li Xi-Yin,Wang Zhong-Wei,Zhang Xiao-Juan,Zhou Li,Gui Jian-Fang

Unisexual animals are commonly found in some polyploid species complexes, and most of these species have had a long evolutionary history. However, their method for avoiding genomic decay remains unclear. The polyploid Carassius complex naturally comprises the sexual amphidiploid C. auratus (crucian carp or goldfish) (AABB) and the gynogenetic amphitriploid C. gibelio (gibel carp) (AAABBB). Recently, we developed a fertile synthetic amphitetraploid (AAAABBBB) male from C. gibelio by incorporating a C. auratus genome. In this study, we generated novel amphitriploids (AAABBB) by backcrossing the amphitetraploid male with the amphidiploid C. auratus. Whole-genome resequencing revealed the genomic changes, including recombination and independent assortment between homologs of C. gibelio and C. auratus. The fertility, sex determination system, oocyte development, and fertilization behaviors of the novel amphitriploids were investigated. Approximately 80% of the novel amphitriploid females recovered the unisexual gynogenesis ability. Intriguingly, two types of primary oocyte (with and without homolog synapsis) were discovered, and their distinct development fates were observed. Type I oocytes entered apoptosis due to improper synaptonemal complex assembly and incomplete double-strand break repair, whereas subsequent type II oocytes bypassed meiosis through an alternative ameiotic pathway to develop into mature eggs. Moreover, gynogenesis was stabilized in their offspring, and a new array of diverse gynogenetic amphitriploid clones was produced. These revealed genomic changes and detailed cytological data provide comprehensive evidence that changes in ploidy drive unisexual and sexual reproduction transition, thereby resulting in genomic diversity and allowing C. gibelio avoid genomic decay.

Strategy for the synthesis of zeolite Y by artificial-fish-reef breeding negative crystals

Peng Liu,Tian Xia,Suofu Nie,Qiaoxia Guo,Chunming Xu,Baojian Shen

Y zeolite is presently used as an important active component in oil refining catalysts. The efficient synthesis of NaY zeolite still faces many huge challenges. Herein, a novel method for the rapid synthesis of nano-plate-like small crystal-sized NaY zeolite through an artificial-fish-reef-breeding negative crystal strategy is reported. It was discovered that cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) could act as an artificial fish-reef to breed negative crystals, which promoted NaY zeolite nucleation and accelerated the crystallization of NaY zeolite. The crystallization time of NaY zeolite was shortened by 9 h. The relevant crystallization mechanism was investigated. Nano-plate-like (10–50 nm) small-sized (100–200 nm) NaY zeolite crystals with exceptional thermal stability and a large total volume (0.447 cm3 g−1) were synthesized. After steam treatment, the nano-plate-like small-sized USY-CPAM zeolites possessed reasonable acid sites distribution, endowing them with superior cracking activity for heavy reactant molecules.

A fish-skin-inspired wearable scale-ionogel composite for impact protection and motion sensing

Tianyu Xu,Zimu Li,Lin Mei,Hanshen Huang,Jie Tian,Zijian Mei,Shuting Liu,Xiaoming Liu,Xinglong Gong,Tianzhi Luo

A bioinspired rigid-flexible composite with fish-skin architecture was developed. • Tough ionogel (25.85 MJ/m 3 ) with excellent environmental stability. • The composite exhibits a ballistic limit velocity (157.48 m s −1 ) and high specific energy dissipation (2.44 kJ/m). • Stable CNT conductive network enables sensitive, linear, and cyclic strain sensing. • Smart protectors integrate impact mitigation and real-time motion/impact monitoring. High-performance intelligent protective armor necessitates a synergistic combination of soft wearability, excellent impact resistance, and energy absorption capability. These requirements are becoming increasingly critical in modern society. Here, we report a rigid-flexible coupled bioinspired composite (APCIG-NCF) with a mechanically asymmetric architecture, which integrates impact mitigation and motion sensing. The composite adopts a hierarchical design in which an acrylic acid-based ionogel (APCIG) is covered by rigid nylon‑carbon fiber (NCF) scales. APCIG attenuates impact force and effectively absorbs impact energy through its high toughness (25.85 MJ/m 3 ) and reversible energy dissipation mechanisms. Moreover, owing to the rigid NCF, APCIG-NCF exhibits strong resistance to localized subsonic projectile impact, with a limit penetration velocity of up to 157.48 m s −1 . Additionally, carbon nanotubes inside APCIG establish a stable conductive network, enabling remarkable strain-sensing performance with excellent linearity and outstanding cyclic stability. Leveraging these properties, intelligent knee and elbow protectors were fabricated, achieving superior anti-impact performance and in situ monitoring. This work provides a new design strategy and material platform for the development of next-generation smart wearable protective gear.

Desalination and flavor improvement of fish sauce via electrodialysis with charge-selective nanofiltration membranes

Xiaoru Feng,Jale Su,Xianbing Xu,Rina Wu,Guowan Su,Ling Zhang

Reducing sodium in fish sauce without weakening its characteristic umami and fermented aroma remains a major challenge for high-salt condiments. Here, electrodialysis with charge-selective nanofiltration membranes (ED-csNF) was evaluated as a selective desalination strategy capable of coupling ion removal with flavor retention and remodeling. ED-csNF significantly reduced salt content by 77.82%, while AAN increased from 0.83 to 0.98 g/100 mL, total FAAs from 58.67 to 91.26 mg/g, and total organic acids from 43.95 to 61.96 mg/g. In addition, the major umami amino acids, glutamic acid and aspartic acid, increased from 6.32 to 11.05 mg/g and from 4.86 to 8.66 mg/g, respectively. Sensory analysis confirmed a shift from a salty, fishy, and ammoniacal profile toward stronger umami, meaty, and soy sauce-like notes. Flavor analysis showed that ED-csNF selectively enhanced desirable aroma compounds, including alcohols, esters, ketones, and phenols whereas typical off-note compounds such as dimethyl trisulfide and several pyrazines were reduced. These results demonstrate that ED-csNF functions not only as a sodium-reduction technology but also as a flavor-selective processing platform for producing low-sodium fish sauce with enhanced sensory quality.

A Case Study on Fish Gelatin/Microcrystalline Cellulose Biomaterial Inks for Extrusion-Based Bioprinting

Yubo Tao,Jinbao Du,Tong Hu,Peng Li,Ling Pan,Fangong Kong,Jingfa Zhang

The development of printable, biocompatible, biodegradable, and cost-effective bioinks, or biomaterial inks, remains a focal point in extrusion-based bioprinting research. In this study, fish gelatin (FG) was reinforced with microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) to formulate biomaterial inks. These FG/MCC composite inks were fabricated into 3D scaffolds using an extrusion bioprinter. The influence of MCC concentration on printability was systematically evaluated. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses confirmed the formation of hydrogen bonds between MCC and FG, indicating molecular-level interactions. Notably, MCC incorporation enhanced the rheological properties of the ink and significantly improved the compressive strength of printed scaffolds. Furthermore, MCC content modulated key scaffold characteristics, including porosity, degradation rate, swelling behavior, and microarchitecture. These findings demonstrate that FG/MCC composite hydrogels exhibit optimal properties for extrusion-based 3D bioprinting, offering a promising platform for tissue engineering applications.

Synergistic antioxidant and anti-aging effects of Asini Corii Colla combined with fish maw

Teng Wang,Cong Li,Xiao Dong Lu,Xue Ying Ma,Li Ji,Jian Ling Zhang,Geng Li Huang,Xiao Xie,Ying Ying Liu,Jie Xiao,Hai Feng Li,Zhou Ping Wang

BACKGROUND Asini Corii Colla (ACC) and fish maw (FM) are established bioactive compounds with antioxidant and anti-aging properties, although their combinatorial effects remain uncharacterized. The present study systematically evaluated ACC-FM formulations (low-dose: LAF; high-dose: HAF) through in vitro antioxidant assessments and in vivo aging models, focusing on dermal fibroblast functionality and cutaneous tissue integrity. RESULTS The LAF formulation demonstrated superior in vitro antioxidant activity, achieving 77.60% ABTS [2,2′-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)] radical scavenging ( P < 0.05) and 1.47 U mL –1 total antioxidant capacity ( P < 0.05). It enhanced human dermal fibroblasts (HFF-1) migration by 38.50% and stimulated maximal collagen secretion (641.58 ± 64.70 ng mL –1 at 5 mg mL –1 ). In vivo studies revealed that LAF significantly increased skin antioxidant enzyme activity (35.23 ± 1.65 U mg –1 protein, P < 0.05), reduced lipid peroxidation (3.15 ± 0.29 m m mg –1 protein) and improved skin elasticity and thickness compared to controls. CONCLUSION This study provides the first evidence of synergistic anti-aging effects between ACC and FM, with the low-dose formulation (LAF) exhibiting optimal efficacy in enhancing antioxidant defense and tissue repair. These findings position LAF as a viable bioactive agent for anti-aging applications in cosmeceuticals and functional foods, supporting further translational investigation. © 2025 Society of Chemical Industry.

Hemoglobin immobilized with modified “fish-in-net” approach for the catalytic removal of aniline

Jiayin Liu,Jingqi Guan,Ming Lu,Qiubin Kan,Zhengqiang Li

Blood is a waste product of the slaughter industry, while its main component hemoglobin (Hb) is a pseudo-peroxidase which is able to oxidize polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the presence of H 2 O 2 . In order to use Hb for wastewater treatment, we encapsulated it in silica-based matrix by modified “fish-in-net” approach. The as-synthesized catalysts were characterized by SEM, TEM, BET and solid-state UV–vis spectroscopy. It was found that Hb was partially homogeneously dispersed in microspheres and showed more stable peroxidase-like activity than free Hb. Moreover, it had substantially increased storage stability as well as pH stability. It was used as biocatalyst to remove aniline in aqueous solution and gave a reduction of 65% aniline removal, while 76% in the presence of additive PEG. No significant activity loss was observed after ten runs. These experimental results suggest that the resultant product was a promising biocatalyst for aromatic wastewater treatment.
