The enhancement effect of an environmentally friendly reducing agent, ascorbic acid (AA), on trichloroethene (TCE) degradation by Fe(III)-activated calcium peroxide (CP) was evaluated. The addition of AA accelerated the transformation of Fe(III) to Fe(II), and the complexation of Fe(III)/Fe(II) with AA and its products alleviated the precipitation of dissolved iron. These impacts enhanced the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROSs). Investigation of ROSs using chemical probe tests, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests, and radical scavenger tests strongly confirm large production of hydroxyl radicals (HO ) that is responsible for TCE degradation. The generation of Cl − from the degraded TCE was complete in the enhanced CP/Fe(III)/AA system. The investigation of solution matrix effects showed that the TCE degradation rate decreases with the increase in solution pH, while Cl − , SO 4 2− and NO 3 − anions have minor impact. Conversely, HCO 3 − significantly inhibited TCE degradation due to pH elevation and HO scavenging. The results of experiments performed using actual groundwater indicated that an increase in reagent doses are required for effective TCE removal. In summary, the potential effectiveness of the CP/Fe(III)/AA oxidation system for remediation of TCE contaminated groundwater has been demonstrated. Additional research is needed to develop the system for practical implementation.

Dual crosslinking network hydrogels fabricated by non-covalent interactions can have both excellent mechanical properties and tolerable self-healing performances. Although a range of hydrogels that are constructed by hydrophobic association-interaction (HAI) or/and Fe(III) ionic interactions have been reported, as far as we know, there has been little progress in the case of influence due to surfactant types and Fe(III) contents on the mechanical and self-healing properties. In this study, two kinds of dual crosslinking hydrogels based on acrylic acid (AA) and stearyl methacrylate (SMA) were fabricated by using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as physical crosslinking points, respectively, in which PAA was used as the hydrophilic part and PSMA as the hydrophobic part, and the ionic interaction of Fe(III) (Fe3+) ions combined carboxylic groups (–COO−) of PAA as the second crosslinking point. Mechanical properties, self-healing and self-recovery performances of the prepared hydrogels and their influencing factors were investigated. The mechanical properties of the two hydrogels increased with higher Fe3+ contents and reached a maximum at 0.3 mol% of Fe3+, while they increased gradually with the AA contents. The hydrogels showed self-healing properties with recoverable mechanical values after healing for 24 h. Moreover, the hydrogels also showed around 90% of self-recovery properties. The hydrogels formed by using PVA as a surfactant (HPAA-Fe3+@PVA) showed higher mechanical properties, but lower self-healing and self-recovery efficiencies, compared with those of the SDS-associated hydrogels (HPAA-Fe3+@SDS), because the PVA macromolecules with longer chains increased the chain entanglement. These results indicate that the mechanical properties, self-healing and self-recovery performances can be regulated by changing the surfactant types and compositions of the AA and Fe3+ of the hydrogels.

Unavoidable metal ions commonly exist in the pulp during flotation. These ions can affect the floatability of minerals, and they can also result in the differences in the surface features between different minerals. In this study, how Fe 3+ affected the flotation behavior of cerussite was investigated by micro-flotation tests. The corresponding adsorption characteristics of the sulfidizing agent and collector on the surfaces of cerussite were investigated by surface-analysis techniques. The results of micro-flotation tests showed that the floatability of cerussite significantly decreased when Fe 3+ was added before Na 2 S and xanthate. The flotation recovery of cerussite decreased compared with that obtained without participation of Fe 3+ . Additionally, the results of xanthate and Na 2 S adsorption tests, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and zeta potential measurements verified that Fe 3+ and its hydrophilic hydroxyl derivatives (Fe-OH compounds) resulted in reduced amounts and reactive activities of S-bearing species adsorbed on the surfaces of cerussite. This decreased the adsorption capacity of subsequently added xanthate, resulting in the difficulty in effectively recovering cerussite in the sulfidization-xanthate system.

Generally, Fe(II) has an efficiently catalytic activity toward peroxymonosulfate (PMS), but the slow conversion of Fe(III) to Fe(II) and production of iron sludge impede the practical application of Fe(II)/PMS system. In this work, ascorbic acid (AA), a complexing agent and reductant, was introduced to Fe(III)/PMS process to facilitate the Fe(III) reduction. The decoloration of rhodamine B (RhB) was obviously enhanced in Fe(III)/PMS process with the addition of AA. Fe(III)-AA complex was firstly generated in Fe(III)/AA/PMS process via the complexation and then was reduced to Fe(II), which could catalyze PMS to yield oxidative species. Fe(IV), sulfate radical (SO 4 •− ) and hydroxyl radical ( • OH) were the working oxidants for RhB decoloration in this system, and SO 4 •− played a major role. Increasing Fe(III), AA or PMS dosage was beneficial to RhB decoloration, but their excessive concentration would hinder RhB decoloration. The existence of HCO 3 − , SO 4 2− or FA in this system showed an inhibition effect on RhB decoloration, while a facilitation effect was obtained when the high concentration of Cl − was present. This research offers a way to improve PMS activation by Fe(III) and a technology for eliminating the refractory organic pollutants from the contaminated water.

Abiotic Fe (II) oxidation widely occurs in the natural subsurface environment and engineered dynamic processes, which possibly impacts the growth of indigenous microbes. As previously discovered, the oxidation of aqueous Fe 2+ at neutral pH effectively inactivates iron-reducing bacteria Shewanella oneidensis strain MR-1 (MR-1). Herein, the impacts of co-existing iron mineral on the oxidation of aqueous Fe 2+ and the subsequent disinfection activity on MR-1 were investigated with siderite selected as a representative iron mineral in the subsurface environment. The oxidation rate of aqueous Fe 2+ and the amount of generated OH radical increased as the content of siderite increased, while the MR-1 inactivation was alleviated. An initial concentration of 2.0 × 10 6 CFU/mL MR-1 was inactivated by about 2.7 orders of magnitude during oxidation of 0.2 mM FeSO 4 alone for 30 min, which was reduced to only about 0.6 orders of magnitude in the presence of 4.3 mM co-existing siderite. ROS scavenging results confirmed that the OH radical generated in the bulk solution was not the leading role for the inactivation of MR-1. Morphological changes of the cells observed by SEM demonstrated that the disruption of the cell membrane was alleviated by siderite, which was further supported by the XRD and FTIR spectra. The underlying mechanism was proposed to be the reduced contact time of Fe 2+ and MR-1 cells due to the accelerated oxidation. This work provides new insights into the disinfection behavior of heterogeneous Fe (II) oxidation on iron cycling bacterial in the natural environment.

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) combined with selective adsorption capacity of ethane over ethylene and good moisture stability are highly urged by adsorption industrial community. Here, the moisture stability mechanism of Zr-bptc, UiO-66, PCN-245, and Ni(bdc)(ted) 0.5 were investigated by moisture stability experiments, and computational simulation of metal node-linker breaking energy caused by water. Results show that the moisture stability follows the order of Zr-bptc > UiO-66 > PCN-245 > Ni(bdc)(ted) 0.5 . The different moisture stability for these MOFs is likely attributed to the bond strength between metal center and ligands, the coordination number of metal center, the hydrophobicity of framework, as well as the degree of interpenetrated framework. Additionally, comparing with ethylene-selective MOFs, ethane-selective MOFs have fewer coordinatively unsaturated metal sites. Breakthrough experiments indicated that Zr-bptc is the promising material for ethane/ethylene separation.

As a kind of refractory chlorinated hydrocarbon, 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCA) has been frequently detected in contaminated groundwater, and it is hard for common technology to degrade it due to its stability. Moreover, the existence of 1,2-DCA can do harm to human organs. Hence, it is urgent to develop an effective technology for the remediation of 1,2-DCA-contaminated groundwater. In this study, a calcium peroxide (CaO 2 ) system activated by Fe(III) was applied to the degradation of 1,2-DCA and 83.3% of 1,2-DCA could be effectively removed within 3 h when the molar ratio of CaO 2 /Fe(III)/1,2-DCA was 30/120/1. The results of probe experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) detection, and scavenging tests demonstrated that both HO • and O 2 −• were the key factors for 1,2-DCA degradation. The released amount of Cl − (84.1%) revealed that most of the chlorine in 1,2-DCA could be dechlorinated. GC-MS was applied for the detection of intermediates during 1,2-DCA degradation and the possible degradation pathway was proposed that 1,2-DCA was first reduced to vinyl chloride (VC) and then oxidized to CO 2 and H 2 O. Finally, 73.4% removal of 1,2-DCA could be achieved in actual groundwater when the molar ratio of CaO 2 /Fe(III)/1,2-DCA was 100/400/1, demonstrating that the CaO 2 /Fe(III) system has a remarkable prospect in 1,2-DCA-contaminated groundwater remediation. Efficient degradation of 1,2-DCA in the CaO 2 /Fe(III) system was achieved. HO • and O 2 –• were the key factors for 1,2-DCA removal in the CaO 2 /Fe(III) system. The possible degradation pathway of 1,2-DCA was proposed. The effect of water matrices on 1,2-DCA degradation in the CaO 2 /Fe(III) system was investigated.

The recycling and regeneration of Fe(III) is the key point for promoting the oxidation reaction of ore to produce acidic mine drainage (AMD). Hydroxyapatite (HAP) has excellent adsorption ability of Fe(III), which has good biocompatibility and is widely distributed in nature. In order to achieve the source treatment of AMD, the migration and transformation of Fe(III) in the presence of HAP were systematically investigated. In this study, the influence of HAP on the migration of Fe(III) was evaluated though the transformation capacity of Fe(III) by HAP. The adsorption transformation kinetic, equilibrium and thermodynamics of Fe(III) using HAP were also systematic investigated. The transformation efficiency of Fe(III) increased with the increasing initial pH value and reached 99.8% at a pH of 5 due to the hydrolysis reaction. The transformation efficiency was also up to 99% at an initial pH of 2 when the reaction temperature increased to 313 K. However, the transformation capability of Fe(III) decreases with reaction temperature. The kinetics of the adsorption of Fe(III) fitted the pseudo second order kinetic model. Experimental results were also analyzed by the Langmuir isotherm equations at room temperatures. RLseparation factor for Langmuir isotherm showed that the migration of Fe(III) is successfully hindered by HAP. Various thermodynamic parameters such as enthalpy (ΔH), Gibbs free energy (ΔG) and entropy (ΔS) changes were computed, which showed that the transport lag of Fe(III) caused by HAP is spontaneous and endothermic.

Amorphous Fe(II)–Fe(III) hydroxy complex with flower-like nanostructure was synthesized by ferric reduction using a microwave-assisted ethylene glycol approach. Here we investigated the correlation between its chemical composition and the removal rate for Congo red (CR) dye. The results showed that the amorphous complex had similar reduction and anion exchange capacities to the green rust. Due to the synergistic effect of attractive electrostatic interaction, anion exchange, ferrous redox and hydrogen bonding, the Fe(II)–Fe(III) hydroxy complex exhibited strong adsorption of CR with an estimated adsorption capacity up to 513 mg g −1 . In contrast, the Fe(III) hydroxy complex had an adsorption capacity of 296 mg g −1 because of the predominant mechanism based on the electrostatic interaction. The present study provides a facile synthesis of nanostructured iron hydroxy complex, with superior performance in adsorbing CR.

To improve the performance of the conventional coagulation process, a permanganate (Mn(VII)) pre-oxidation combined with Fe(III)/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) coagulation process (Mn(VII)-Fe(III)/PMS) that can significantly improve the removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), turbidity, and micropollutants is proposed in this study. Compared with conventional Fe(III) coagulation, the Mn(VII)-Fe(III)/PMS process can also significantly enhance the removal of iohexol and sulfamethoxazole in raw water. During this process, the primary reduction product, Mn(IV), after Mn(VII) pre-oxidation was adsorbed on the floc surfaces and involved in the Fe(III)/PMS process. The natural organic matter (NOM) in raw water mediated the redox cycle of iron. The synergistic effect of NOM, Fe, and Mn facilitated the redox cycle of Mn(III)/Mn(IV) and Fe(III)/Fe(II) to promote the activation of PMS. The sulfate radical (SO 4 •− ) played an important role in the degradation of micropollutants. The formation potential of the detected volatile disinfection by-product (DBP) during the subsequent chlorination was reduced by 21.9% after the Mn(VII)-Fe(III)/PMS process. This study demonstrated the promising application of the Mn(VII)-Fe(III)/PMS process for coagulation and micropollutant control and illustrated the reaction mechanism. This study provides guidance for improving conventional drinking water treatment processes.

Rhodamine salicylaldehyde was synthesized, and its structure was determined using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1 H NMR analysis as well as electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Then a fluorescent polyurethane foam was obtained via incorporation of the prepared rhodamine salicylaldehyde, and the fluorescence sensing behavior for Fe 3+ was systematically investigated. Results showed that the fluorescent polyurethane foam produced higher fluorescence in the presence of Fe 3+ in pure water, due to the coordination for Fe 3+ binding leading to ring-opened amide form. The limit of detection was calculated to be 1.64 × 10 −6 mol L –1 . This fluorescent polyurethane foam can also recognize Fe 3+ with good selectivity. © 2021 Society of Industrial Chemistry.

Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation methods have attractive advantages in advanced oxidation process (AOPs) due to their powerful ability of directly or indirectly generating various reactive oxygen species (ROS). Herein, trace amount of Fe(III) ions were added into the commercial-CoS 2 /PMS system to improve the CoS 2 /PMS decomposition for organics removal. The organics removal efficiency could reach >90% towards methylene blue (MB), diclofenac sodium (DCF), sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and bisphenol A (BPA) in the CoS 2 /Fe(III)/PMS system, with the kinetic apparent rate constant k obs of 0.141, 0.206, 0.247 and 0.091 min −1 , respectively. The synergistic effect between Fe(III) ions and sulfur-vacancies on CoS 2 for PMS degradation were revealed for the first time in cobalt sulfides/PMS system. Quenching experiments and ESR analysis proved that 1 O 2 was the major ROS and was produced mainly by the hydrolysis of SO 5 • – . Besides, the high degradation efficiency was obtained by the contribution of SO 4 • – and • OH. Electron spin–resonance spectroscopy (ESR), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and Raman spectrum data revealed that the addition of Fe(III) ions could optimize the intensity of sulfur vacancies on the CoS 2 surface, which hindered the PMS reduction ability of Co(II), but accelerated the PMS oxidation to form 1 O 2 . The degradation path of MB was analyzed by liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer (LC-MS). The mechanism studies speculated that the sulfur vacancies of CoS 2 provided the binding sites for Fe(III) ions with Co(II), which facilitated the PMS activation by Co(III).
