Construction of a Portable Colorimetric Biosensing Platform Based on the Co-TCPP (Fe)-MOF Nanosheet and Its Application in Glucose Detection

Kermue Vasco Jarnda,Heng Dai,Huiting Hu,Yuan Tian,Richmond Anaman,Pian Wu,Ping Ding

Recent advancements in microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) have demonstrated their significant potential for point-of-care testing (POCT), particularly in low-resource settings. These devices are especially promising for monitoring glucose levels in patients with diabetes, offering a cost-effective and portable solution. However, one of the primary challenges hindering the widespread adoption of smartphone-coupled μPADs has been their sensitivity to varying ambient lighting conditions, which can interfere with accurate colorimetric detection. To address this issue, researchers have introduced a novel approach involving a metal–organic framework (MOF), specifically Co-TCPP (Fe) [cobalt Fe(III) meso-tetra(4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin chloride], synthesized using a straightforward method. Co-TCPP (Fe) exhibits remarkable peroxidase-like activity when exposed to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), enabling it to interact effectively with classic chromogenic substrates and thus improving the colorimetric reaction crucial for accurate glucose detection. In this study, the team developed paper-based μPADs that incorporate the Co-TCPP (Fe) MOF, allowing it to accurately detect glucose levels across a wide concentration range. The limit of detection (LOD) achieved was 5.3 μM, with a linear detection range from 5 to 750 μM. This innovation addresses previous concerns regarding the impact of environmental lighting fluctuations and varying shooting angles, ensuring the reliability of glucose measurements under uncontrolled conditions. By integrating this algorithm into a smartphone-coupled μPAD system, the researchers have created a portable, high-resolution platform that delivers dependable results, even in challenging and fluctuating environments. This breakthrough marks a significant step toward enhancing the practicality and accessibility of glucose monitoring in resource-constrained settings, providing a valuable tool for both clinical and everyday use.

Pt (1 1 1) quantum dot engineered Fe-MOF nanosheet arrays with porous core-shell as an electrocatalyst for efficient overall water splitting

Bo Ye,Ronghua Jiang,Zebin Yu,Yanping Hou,Jun Huang,Boge Zhang,Yiyi Huang,Yalan Zhang,Runzhi Zhang

The preparation of Pt quantum dots (Pt QDs) is an effective way that can solve the high cost problem by reducing the high dosage requirement of noble metal Pt. On the other hand, organic metal framework (MOF) can be used for the stabilization of metal nanoparticles with small size and uniform dispersion. Herein, we successfully synthesized a bifunctional electrocatalyst via a facile one-step hydrothermal treatment. Pt QDs cores are uniformly coated with Fe-MOF nanosheet arrays shell (Pt QDs @Fe-MOF) with a porous cuboids structure on Ni foam (NF). With the quantum size and core-shell structure, the self-assembled porous cuboids of Pt QDs @Fe-MOF exhibited perfect electrochemical performance for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and overall water splitting. Particularly, the electrocatalyst with ultralow content of Pt QDs (1.84 μg cm −2 ) only needed the overpotential of 33 mV and 191 mV to achieve 10 and 100 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH, respectively. In addition, the Pt QDs @Fe-MOF/NF electrodes possessed remarkable activity and stability to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at 1.47 V for overall water splitting of at least 100 h.

From multifunctional catalysts to smart substrates: adsorption control for efficient light-driven one-pot benzimidazole synthesis over Pd/NH2–Ni–Fe-MOF

Hurunqing Liu,Lin Ye,Yun Yuan,Quanyuan Wang,Dengrong Sun,Zhaohui Li

Light-driven one-pot tandem/cascade reactions have attracted increasing interest due to their green process and atomic efficiency. In addition to active sites, the adsorption behavior of reaction substrates also plays a critical role on the catalytic process, but is always overlooked. Herein, we report that modulating the reaction substrates to regulate the adsorption behavior of intermediates can effectively facilitate one-pot multi-step reactions. O-Nitroaniline is strategically selected to replace the commonly used o-phenylenediamine for reaction with benzyl alcohol to synthesize benzimidazole in a one-pot process under visible-light irradiation. The use of o-nitroaniline effectively promotes the adsorption of the benzyl alcohol-derived aldehyde intermediate on the catalyst but weakens the adsorption of o-nitroaniline-derived o-phenylenediamine. Thus, the condensation between these two intermediates can proceed smoothly, alleviating the fatal polymerization side reaction of o-phenylenediamine, affording high efficiency in light-driven benzimidazole production. Departing from the conventional catalyst design, this work underscores an effective way to modulate the reaction substrates for accelerated one-pot synthesis, signifying an important contribution to the design of one-pot synthesis systems.

Ni–Fe bimetallic carbon nanotube catalysts derived from a two-dimensional metalloporphyrin Fe-MOF precursor for oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions

Yunyang Wu

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are critical half-reactions in energy conversion devices such as metal–air batteries and reversible fuel cells, and their sluggish kinetics severely limit the overall device performance. Therefore, the development of efficient, stable, and low-cost non-precious metal bifunctional electrocatalysts is of great significance. In this study, a MOF-derived bifunctional electrocatalytic material (NiFe@CNT), featuring NiFe bimetallic alloys uniformly anchored within a carbon nanotube network, was successfully fabricated using a two-dimensional metalloporphyrin-based Fe-MOF precursor via metal site modulation by introducing Ni, combined with a high-temperature pyrolysis strategy. Structural characterization results indicate that NiFe@CNT possesses an intact three-dimensional CNT conductive network, a high degree of graphitization (ID/IG = 0.39), and uniformly dispersed NiFe alloy active phases. Electrochemical evaluations reveal that NiFe@CNT functions as a highly active bifunctional catalyst for both ORR and OER in alkaline environments. Regarding its ORR activity, the material exhibits a half-wave potential comparable to that of benchmark Pt/C, with reaction kinetics proceeding through an approximately four-electron transfer mechanism. In terms of OER performance, a current density of 10 mA cm−2 is attained at a modest overpotential of merely 1.514 V. In alkaline electrolyte, the ORR proceeds predominantly through a four-electron pathway converting O2 to H2O (O2 + 4H+ + 4e− → 2H2O), while the OER involves the reverse four-electron oxidation of hydroxide to produce molecular oxygen (2H2O → O2 + 4H+ + 4e−). Furthermore, durability assessments confirm that NiFe@CNT surpasses commercial noble metal benchmarks in long-term operational stability. This work presents a viable approach for fabricating advanced noble-metal-free oxygen electrocatalysts through two-dimensional MOF-derived engineering.

Modulation of Fe–MOF via second-transition metal ion doping (Ti, Mn, Zn, Cu) for efficient visible-light driven CO2 reduction to CH4

Yeyin Zhang,Ruting Huang,Yong Fang,Jiacheng Wang,Zijie Yuan,Xinwei Chen,Wenjie Zhu,Yuan Cai,Xianyang Shi

This study developed metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with enhanced properties for CO 2 conversion by doping second- transition metal ions (Ti, Mn, Zn, and Cu) into Fe–MOF, which resulted in Fe-M−MOF (M = Ti, Mn, Zn, or Cu). The selection of different metal species in the metal cluster nodes of the MOFs significantly impacted the CO 2 conversion efficiency. Among the different combinations, the Fe–Cu bimetallic cluster node was identified as the most optimal node. In addition, we investigated various variables and preparation conditions for determining the optimal synthesis conditions for Fe–Cu-MOFs. We observed that a synthesis temperature, time, and pH of 130 °C, 15 h, and 3.2, respectively, yielded the best results. The 13 CO 2 isotope labeling method confirmed that the carbon source of CO and CH 4 were derived from CO 2 . Under simulated visible-light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm), Fe–Cu-T130 exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity, with a CH 4 generation rate of up to 444.2 μmol g −1 h −1 . This high activity was attributed to several factors. First, the presence of Fe 2+ , Fe 3+ , and Cu 2+ on the surface of Fe–Cu-T130 resulted in photogenerated electrons and holes under visible-light excitation. Fe 2+ accepted electrons to reduce CO 2 , whereas Fe 3+ and Cu 2+ oxidized H 2 O through holes. Second, the polycrystalline structure of Fe–Cu-T130 with abundant surface oxygen vacancies enhanced the chemical reactivity. Finally, the low conduction band position and narrower bandgap of Fe–Cu-T130 facilitated the excitation of electrons into the conduction band, thereby promoting the CO 2 reduction reaction. This study successfully demonstrated the enhanced photocatalytic activity of Fe–Cu-T130 for CO 2 conversion under visible light. The findings provide insight into the development of MOFs with improved properties for the sustainable and efficient utilization of CO 2 .

Zwitterionic functionalized catalytic evaporator enables simultaneous solar distillation and organic pollutant degradation

Chiyu Wen,Jing Yang,Hongshuang Guo,Qingsi Li,Xiangyu Zhang,Xiaodong Wang,Moyuan Cao,Lei Zhang

Solar distillation is regarded as a nearly ideal sustainable technology for clean water generation. However, micro- and macro-foulers live in the natural water and volatile organic compounds induced by overdischarging of wastewater are still the main challenges of solar distillation. Herein, a compositive strategy is presented to fabricate self-floatable catalytic evaporators with both solar distillation and organic pollutant degradation, through Fe MOF-loaded electrospinning and antibiofouling zwitterionic coating. The obtained catalytic evaporator with a fibrous structure can lead to enhanced solar distillation rate (1.43 kg m -2 h −1 ) and conversion efficiency (89.41%). More importantly, the zwitterionic hydrogel coating endows the evaporator with superhydrophilicity for continuous water pumping and fascinating multi-contamination repellence against bacteria, alga, oil and salt, and the Fe MOF enables organic pollutants decomposition via photo-Fenton reaction. The currently designed catalytic evaporator integrates the above merits and is expected to provide a new dimension for the designing of multifunctional solar evaporation devices, solving the device contamination and organic residue issues in water treatment.

Highly efficient removal of both cationic and anionic dyes from wastewater with a water-stable and eco-friendly Fe-MOF via host-guest encapsulation

Shuanghong Tian,Shuang Xu,Jinting Liu,Chun He,Ya Xiong,Pingyun Feng

A water-stable cationic Fe based metal organic framework, CPM-97-Fe, was successfully synthesized in a large scale by a modified method (CPM: Crystalline Porous Materials). The adsorption behaviors , including removal efficiency, adsorption kinetics and isotherms of nine hazardous dyes in wastewater were investigated with different pH and organic solvents. The pseudo-second-order adsorption rate constant follows the order of Reactive Brilliant Red X-3B (X-3B, 0.0205 g mg −1 min −1 ) > Acid orange 7 (AO7, 0.0112 g mg −1 min −1 ) > Congo Red (CR, 0.0080 g mg −1 min −1 ) >  Methylene Blue (MB, 0.0061 g mg −1 min −1 ) >  Rhodamine B (RhB, 0.0049 g mg −1 min −1 ) > Croscein Scarlet 3B (CS3B, 0.0041 g mg −1 min −1 ) > Methyl Blue (MB, 0.0017 g mg −1 min −1 ) = New Coccine (NC, 0.0017 g mg −1 min −1 ) > Acid Black 1 (AB1, 0.0014 g mg −1 min −1 ). It is found that the adsorption quasi-equilibrium can reach quickly within 30 min, but the dyes with proper structure (i.e. proper distance between two sulfonic groups, less azo benzene hindrance effect, more reactive Cl groups, and more benzene rings), smaller molecular size, more negative charges, lower molecular mass favor the faster adsorption. The adsorption capacity obeys another sequence of CR (831 mg g −1 ) > X-3B (648 mg g −1 ) > AO7 (502 mg g −1 ) > MLB (380 mg g −1 ) > CS3B (356 mg g −1 ) > AB1 (325 mg g −1 ) > RhB (306 mg g −1 ) > MB (304 mg g −1 ) > NC (157 mg g −1 ). It is disclosed that CPM-97-Fe can adsorb more dyes with larger molecular mass , less negative charges, and a proper structure. Especially for Congo red, the adsorption capacity on CPM-97-Fe is 831 mgg −1 , 8.1 times that on activated carbon (103 mgg −1 ). Even the adsorption capacities of very bulky Rhodamine B and Methyl Blue reach as high as 306 and 304 mgg −1 , respectively, ranking the highest level among MOF materials. The special structure of CPM-97-Fe with big open windows and high specific surface area of 1397.0 m 2  g -1 contributes to the fast adsorption and high capacity towards all investigated dyes via the host-guest encapsulation mechanism including electrostatic interaction, ion exchange, π-π stacking interaction, as well as pore filling.

Phytic acid-bridged MXene/Fe-MOF nanohybrids: A dual synergy for enhanced flame retardancy, smoke suppression and mechanical properties in poly (l-lactic acid)

Menghan Guo,Wenqing Wang,Zhiguo Zhu,Pengfei Qi,Jing Zhang,Yifan Yan,Rui Wang

Poly(lactic acid), a biodegradable polymer, suffers from flammability and low strength. A hierarchical layered flame retardant (MXene@P–Fe) was constructed via a pH-regulated self-assembly strategy, in which phytic acid (PA) served as a bridging ligand to intercalate Fe-based MOFs into MXene nanosheets. When incorporated into PLA at a loading of 12  wt %, the composite exhibited significantly enhanced flame retardancy, as evidenced by an increased LOI of 30%. In addition, the peak heat release rate and total heat release were reduced by 40.3% and 43.1%, respectively, evidencing effective suppression of heat and toxicity. Mechanistic investigations revealed that synergistic interactions among MXene, PA, and Fe-MOFs promoted cyclic compound formation, yielding a graphitized Ti/C-based barrier that inhibited heat and mass transfer. Furthermore, the tensile strength of PLA/4MXene@P–Fe reached 79.3 MPa, representing a 32.6% improvement over pristine PLA. This work provides a novel and practical pathway for constructing high-performance, fire-safe polymeric materials based on sustainable PLA.

A cascade sensing platform of glucose oxidase loaded Fe-MOF functionalized via boric acid modification and defect engineering for H2O2 and glucose sensitive detection

Xu Zixuan,Zhang Yumin,Jiang Minqiang,Wang Yuheng,Li Min,Li Lijie,He Gaohong,Zhang Wenjun

Of tunable porosity, high specific surface area and excellent stability, the metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as nanozyme capably not only catalyze the bio-substrate but load the natural enzyme, so as for the cascade catalyzation achievement. However, the limited mass transfer rate and natural enzyme abscission of MOFs are still fatal for the practical application. Herein, taking P-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) as a pore-size regulator and boronic acid (BA) as the bio-affinity sorbent, BA-MIL-100(Fe)-PABA of enlarged pores and better affinity was acquired as the peroxidase to ensure the efficient mass transfer and enzyme protection. Via the thorough investigation, the maximum reaction rate of H 2 O 2 catalyzation by BA-MIL-100(Fe)-PABA was up to 2.62 × 10 −7  M·s −1 with \({K}_{m}\) as low as 0.357 mM, along with the LOD of 0.77 μM. Loading GOx, a cascade platform of GOx@BA-MIL-100(Fe)-PABA was subsequently obtained to detect the blood glucose stable-selectively, with the wide linear response range (0.025–1.5 mM) and the LOD of 0.017 mM. The recycled catalytic activity of the platform was better 68% during 12 cycles. A new method for constructing defective MOFs at room temperature was thus proposed to achieve an efficient mass transfer and a better bio-affinity for glucose detection with high sensitivity and selectivity, paving the way for more sensitive detection and advanced applications. Killing two birds with one stone: a simple and integrated platform based on an Fe-MOF for dual-mode detection and photocatalytic elimination of tetracycline

Fushen Niu,Hui Sun,Yifan Gao,Shusen Ding,Qing Xu,Xia Dong,Xiaoling Wang,Xiaoyan Zhang,Xiaomin Wang,Yuan Fang

The persistence of tetracycline (TC) antibiotic residues in foodstuffs and aquatic systems poses critical threats to human health and the ecological environment, driving an imperative demand for developing multifunctional platforms capable of simultaneous visual monitoring and high-efficiency elimination of these contaminants. Herein, a simple yet novel colorimetric sensor that integrates detection and degradation of TCs has been constructed based on the excellent peroxidase-like activity of the metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) MIL-101(Fe). Colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) can be effectively oxidized to generate blue oxidized TMB (ox-TMB) by MIL-101(Fe), which exhibits a characteristic peak at 652 nm. The presence of TCs at varying concentrations can specifically inhibit this oxidation reaction, leading to different degrees of decrease in the intensity of the characteristic peak. Based on this concentration-dependent chromogenic behavior, TCs are quantitative identified by the dual-mode detection of UV-Vis absorbance and with the naked eye. The as-fabricated colorimetric sensor displays superior selectivity toward TCs, with its detection capability in complex matrices being successfully validated in environmental water and commercial milk samples. To avoid accessional antibiotic contamination, MIL-101(Fe) can also be served as a scavenger to degrade TCs efficiently under visible light irradiation, achieving up to 92.01% removal efficiency within 3 h. The developed strategy has the advantages of visual recognition, rapid field detection and no requirement of large-scale instruments. Most critically, it cleverly realizes the integration of antibiotic detection and degradation, which provides a low-cost and high-efficiency solution to fundamentally solve the problem of antibiotic contamination.

Attenuation of BPA degradation by SO4− in a system of peroxymonosulfate coupled with Mn/Fe MOF-templated catalysts and its synergism with Cl− and bicarbonate

Xiaojie Qiu,Shengjiong Yang,Mawuli Dzakpasu,Xiaoping Li,Dahu Ding,Pengkang Jin,Rongzhi Chen,Qionghua Zhang,Xiaochang C. Wang

Mn 0.8 Fe 2.2 O 4 magnetic nanocrystals (Mn 0.8 Fe 2.2 O 4 MNCs) are synthesized by thermal treatment of a metal-organic framework (MOF) template, and their physicochemical properties are characterized in detail. The Mn 0.8 Fe 2.2 O 4 MNCs exhibited highly efficient performance for the catalytic degradation of Bisphenol A (BPA) by peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation at various initial pH, catalyst dosage, and PMS concentration. A leaching solution experiment evidenced that PMS activation by the Mn 0.8 Fe 2.2 O 4 MNCs is a heterogeneous process. Interestingly, scavenging experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis demonstrated that HO is the dominant radical for BPA degradation, rather than SO 4 − . The scavenger experiment indicated that the surface-bound radicals may play the crucial role for BPA degradation. Increasing Cl − or decreasing bicarbonate concentrations in solution enhanced the catalytic degradation process significantly through non-radical pathways. The Mn 0.8 Fe 2.2 O 4 MNCs exhibited desirable stability and reusability, that the spent Mn 0.8 Fe 2.2 O 4 MNCs could be significantly regenerated by thermal treatment at 450 °C in open air. Findings from this study would expand the applications of MOFs and also provide new insights into the enhancement of degradation efficiency during PMS activation processes.

Constructing Zr/Fe-MOF-derived carbon intercalated MXene/Zr-Fe@C heterostructure for NSAIDs removal: Synergistic adsorption performance and mechanism studies in single and binary systems

Huixiao Duo,Yan Hao,Jiayuan Yue,Qianxing Lu,Yuetan Dong,Ke Chen,Yanyan Kong,Shushu Ding,Qing Zhu,Jiejia Li

The extensive use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), particularly diclofenac (DIC) and indomethacin (IND), poses escalating ecological and health risks due to incomplete degradation in water systems. Conventional remediation methods face challenges including low efficiency and toxic intermediate generation. Herein, we developed a novel MXene/Zr-Fe-MOF-derived carbon heterostructure (MXene/Zr-Fe@C) featuring bimetallic Zr/Fe active sites anchored on MXene nanosheets. The heterostructure design of MXene/Zr-Fe@C enables exceptional synergistic adsorption of NSAIDs from aqueous environments. Systematic adsorption experiments in single-component (DIC or IND) and binary (DIC+IND) systems revealed competitive adsorption behaviors and synergistic effects. MXene/Zr-Fe@C demonstrated satisfactory adsorption capacities (277.7 mg/g for DIC and 238.09 mg/g for IND, surpassing conventional adsorbents. These exceptional performances stem from the bimetallic site selectivity and synergistic domain interactions of MXene/Zr-Fe@C. The Zr/Fe@C provide selective coordination site, while MXene and carbon matrix promote the non-polar interaction with aromatic rings of NSAIDs. Remarkably, the composite exhibited excellent regenerability, retaining 83% of adsorption capacity after 54 regeneration cycles. Overall, the synergistic interfacial effects between MXene's conductive surfaces and ordered porosity of MOF-derived carbon enhance structural stability, efficient mass transfer and site accessibility. These findings establish MXene/Zr-Fe@C heterostructures as versatile platforms for NSAIDs remediation, providing foundational insights for sustainable water purification technologies addressing emerging pharmaceutical contamination challenges.
