Porous nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets composite Fe3C synthesized by molten salt-mediated template method as efficient ORR catalyst for zinc-air batteries

Long Qing,Wu Qianqi,Wen Zhiming,Wang Wei,Li Chen,Tang Huichuan,Wang Haitao,Huang Junlin,Chen Liang,Li Gangyong,Xu Wenyuan

Considering the intrinsic activity of non-precious metal oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts is typically lower than that of precious metal catalysts, it is crucial to focus on the rational design of their micro-morphology and active site. This paper employed a simple molten salt-mediated template method to fabricate a Fe 3 C composite N-doped C catalyst with a layered porous framework (Fe 3 C@NC). Tannic acid was utilized to form a strong coordination with iron to limit the grain size of Fe 3 C nanocrystals generated by high-temperature pyrolysis. Moreover, urea achieved nitrogen doping in tannic acid-derived porous carbon, while the graphite phase nitrogen-doped carbon (g-C 3 N 4 ) formed by its pyrolysis, together with the molten salt-mediated environment, jointly controlled the two-dimensional sheet-like structure of the material. The optimized Fe 3 C@NC-800 demonstrated efficient ORR performance, with an ORR half-wave potential of 0.883 V. Its application as a cathode catalyst in a liquid zinc-air battery (ZABs) exhibits a maximum power density of 211.5 mW cm −2 , surpassing that of a Pt/C-based ZAB and indicating the potential practical utility of this material.

Synthesis of Fe3C/VN/C composites through pyrolysis mixture of iron-vanadium precursor and melamine in inert gas for a supercapacitor electrode

Yuan Zhang,Yongtao Tan,Fengwei Tuo,Haorui Liu,Ning Mi,Jiantie Xu

Vanadium nitride (VN) has attracted significant attention as a promising electrode material for supercapacitors mainly owing to its high theoretical specific capacitance and broad electrochemical stability window. However, poor cycling stability caused by dissolution in alkaline electrolyte largely restricts its practical applications. Herein, a series of heterojunction Fe 3 C/VN/C- x composites were synthesized via a one-step pyrolysis strategy for pyrolysis mixture of iron-vanadium precursor and melamine at 700 °C for 2 h. Among the series, the optimized Fe 3 C/VN/C-2 exhibits a high specific capacitance of 291.2 F g -1 at 0.5 A g -1 , which is 2.7 times higher than pristine VN with 108.3 F g -1 . Moreover, the Fe 3 C/VN/C-2 enables asymmetric supercapacitor device (Ni(OH) 2 ||Fe 3 C/VN/C-2) achieving a high energy density of 14.9 Wh kg -1 with high power density of 400.1 W kg -1 and a high power density of 3998.6 W kg -1 with an energy density of 6.2 Wh kg -1 , and retaining 92.7 % of its initial capacitance after 10,000 cycles (17.2 F g -1 ). The enhanced electrochemical performance of Fe 3 C/VN/C-2 is attributed to the synergistic effect of the heterojunction and carbon matrix, which suppress vanadium dissolution and accelerate charge transfer kinetics.

Surface modification strategy for constructing Fe-Nx species and FeF2/Fe3C nanoparticles co-anchored N, F co-doped carbon nanotubes for efficient oxygen reduction

Yunpeng Liu,Xupo Liu,Cuicui Zhang,Ye Chen,Zhitao Wang,Gangya Wei,Jing Zhang,Tianfang Yang,Fengxian Zhang,Shuyan Gao

Fe-N-C catalysts have served as ideal catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), but the strong adsorption to ORR-relevant intermediates and less utilization of Fe-N x sites endow those catalysts with inferior performance. Here, an efficient catalyst consisted of Fe-N x species and FeF 2 /Fe 3 C nanoparticles co-anchored on N, F co-doped carbon nanotubes (Fe-NF-CNTs) has been constructed through a surface modification strategy. Sodium trifluoroacetate as functional linker modified on metal-organic framework surface promotes to form abundant and accessible active sites. FeF 2 /Fe 3 C nanoparticles and hydrogen fluoride generated in pyrolysis process facilitate to construct N, F co-doped CNTs with defects and holes. N, F co-doping modifies the adsorption characteristic of Fe-N x sites, while CNTs improve the accessibility of active sites and the capability of material transport. Therefore, Fe-NF-CNTs exhibits outstanding activity (E 1/2 = 0.85 V) and stabilization (ΔE = 6 mV, 10k cycles). Impressively, Fe-NF-CNTs delivers high power density (144 and 68 mW cm –2 ) and cycle stability (300 and 60 h) in liquid and flexible Zn-air batteries, respectively. This work provides a surface modification strategy to guide the tuning of electronic structure of efficient ORR catalysts designed for renewable green energy.

Yolk-shell structured ultra-small Fe3C nanoparticles encapsulated in S, N-codoped porous carbon as effective catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction in microbial fuel cells

Baitao Li,Xiqian Wang,Lingmin Wu

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode of Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) is the limiting step due to its slow kinetics, making the development of efficient, stable, and cost-effective catalysts essential. This study focuses on a yolk-shell structured ultra-small Fe 3 C nanoparticles encapsulated in a sulfur, nitrogen-codoped porous carbon matrix. The strong complexation of citric acid (CA) with iron ions results in a smaller particle size of Fe 3 C nanoparticles, and its pore forming ability favors the effective assemble of a unique hollow yolk-shell structure. Due to the highly dispersed and ultra-small (4.99 ± 0.23 nm) Fe 3 C nanoparticles and the presence of abundant Fe-N active sites, Fe-SNC-2CA demonstrates superior ORR activity compared to commercial Pt/C, with half-wave potentials of 0.88 V and 0.68 V in alkaline and neutral solutions, respectively. Its unique yolk-shell structure ensures excellent stability by preventing the aggregation and dissolution of internal Fe 3 C nanoparticles. The Fe-SNC-2CA equipped MFC achieves a power density of 1614 ± 60 mW m −2 , maintaining output stability with a 5.3 % decay over 430 h, and finally contributes a 75.6 % chemical oxygen demand removal. This study highlights a straightforward yolk shell synthesis method and the beneficial role of ultra-small Fe 3 C in fuel cell application.

In situ fabrication of Fe3C nanoparticles and porous-carbon composites as high-performance electromagnetic wave absorber

Wentao Yu,Jiahui Lin,Yan Cao,Jiyong Fang,Ziqing Wang,Jintao Huang,Yonggang Min

This study successfully utilized a straightforward approach, choosing liquid–liquid phase separation to build a porous structure and synthesize composite absorbers based on polyimide-based porous carbon/Fe3C (PIC/Fe3C-1, PIC/Fe3C-2) nanoparticles and porous carbon/FeCo alloy nanoparticles (PIC/FeCo). The specially designed network structure pore structures contributed multiple reflection, conduction loss and strong interfacial polarization. After characterization, PIC/Fe3C-2 obtained minimum RL of −35.37 dB at 17.04 GHz with 1.55 mm thickness and effective absorption bandwidth of 4.95 GHz with 1.66 mm thickness. Furthermore, PIC/FeCo, with a thickness of 1.63 mm, exhibits the most robust electromagnetic wave loss ability at 15.6 GHz, with a minimum RL of −56.32 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth of 4.88 GHz. Thus, the design strategy presented in this study could serve as a model for synthesizing other high-performance absorbers, effectively mitigating electromagnetic wave-induced pollution.

Important role of cellulose and lignin in controlling the crystal structure of iron-carbon composite: Fe3C surpassing Fe0 in activating peroxymonosulfate

Yudong Huo,Shiqi Yuan,Na Zhang,Chun Pei,Yuwei Pan,Ying Zhang,Xiang Mei,Weichuan Qiao,Lijie Xu,Lu Gan

The mechanism of producing iron-carbon composites with different crystal structures by varied wood-based biomass remains unclear. Herein, cellulose and lignin as the important components of wood-based biomass were used to investigate the influence on the crystal structure of iron-carbon composites. Results showed that Fe 3 C could only be produced in cellulose-containing pyrolysis processes, while the pyrolysis of lignin could reduce the iron salt to Fe 0 . Additionally, prolonging pyrolysis time and increasing the ratio of cellulose to Fe also favored the production of Fe 3 C. When applied to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS), the Fe@Cel 0.5 -4 typically dominated by Fe 3 C showed better performance than Fe@Ln 1.0 -4 which was dominated by Fe 0 in the aspects of adsorption, electron transfer, retaining the iron species, sustainability, adaptability to complex water conditions, and the catalytic capability to degrade diclofenac (DCF). Quenching experiments and electron spin resonance results indicated the presence of free radicals ( OH, SO 4 − , SO 5 − and O 2 − ) and non-radical ( 1 O 2 and electron transfer process) pathways in both processes. However, the degradation of DCF in Fe@Cel 0.5 -4/PMS process was mainly dominated by 1 O 2 and electron transfer while was contributed by radical and nonradical pathways almost equally in Fe@Ln 1.0 -4/PMS process. This study may cast some light on the development of iron-carbon composites using wood-based biomass as the carbon source to synthesize the highly efficient catalyst for PMS activation.

Fe/Fe3C@N-doped porous carbon microspindles templated from a metal–organic framework as highly selective and stable catalysts for the catalytic oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides

Li Fang,Qionghao Xu,Yanyan Qi,Xiaoxue Wu,Yanghe Fu,Qiang Xiao,Fumin Zhang,Weidong Zhu

The preparation of efficient and recyclable solid catalysts exhibiting high activity and selectivity toward the target product is a prerequisite to enhance the overall efficiency of a catalytic process. Herein, we study a series of Fe/Fe 3 C-containing nitrogen-doped porous carbon microspindles (Fe/Fe 3 C@NC–x, where x stands for the pyrolysis temperature), which are core-/shell-structured hybrids, constructed by the pyrolysis of a metal–organic framework precursor as highly selective catalysts for the oxidation of sulfides to the corresponding sulfoxides under mild conditions. The Fe/Fe 3 C@NC–x microspindles comprising Fe and Fe 3 C nanocrystals inlaid in nitrogen-doped porous carbon shells are fabricated by the direct carbonization of NH 2 –MIL–88B(Fe) polyhedra at 500 °C–800 °C and under nitrogen atmosphere. Among the various investigated catalysts, the Fe/Fe 3 C@NC–600 microspindles exhibit the best catalytic activity, higher than those exhibited by the analogue Fe/Fe 3 C@C–600 without N doping and the commercial Fe 2 O 3 , Fe 3 O 4 , and Fe 3 C used for the catalytic oxidation of sulfides owing to the synergistic contribution of the Fe 3 C sites and adequate nitrogen doping in the porous carbon support. Furthermore, the magnetically separable properties of the Fe/Fe 3 C@NC–600 microspindles enable their convenient isolation from the reaction system using an external magnet, and they can be repeatedly used for six cycles without any loss in catalytic efficiency.

N-Doped porous tremella-like Fe3C/C electrocatalysts derived from metal–organic frameworks for oxygen reduction reaction

Xinxin Yang,Xiang Sun,Muhammad Rauf,Hongwei Mi,Lingna Sun,Libo Deng,Xiangzhong Ren,Peixin Zhang,Yongliang Li

N-Doped porous tremella-like Fe3C/C electrocatalysts derived from metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) were fabricated via a facile approach. The simply designed catalytic materials have unique fluffy multilayer interconnected porous morphology, which provides a large specific surface area and effectively prevents the agglomeration of nanoparticles. These special features create more active sites (Fe–Nx) on the surface of the electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the presence of the Fe–Nx active sites was verified via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The effect of Fe intake through pyrolysis of MOFs materials was also studied and the composite with 0.04 g Fe source exhibited excellent ORR performance, a very small hydrogen peroxide yield, and followed the four-electron transfer pathway. The ORR activity of the electrocatalyst is comparable to that of commercial Pt/C, while the stability is even better than the latter in an alkaline solution. The facile method of preparing a multilayer porous N-doped tremella-like Fe3C/C electrocatalyst is a promising electrode material for a wide range of applications in fuel cells and metal–air batteries.

Synthesis, characterization and application of tangerine peel-derived Fe3C/Fe-encapsulated biochar for electrochemical removal of environmental pollutant

Ke Qu,Yuhang Qiu,Miao Deng

Conforming to the principles of green chemistry and sustainable environmental progress, this work demonstrated the concept of “treating waste with waste”, i.e. treating atmospheric pollutant sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) with agricultural waste of tangerine peel. SO 2 electro-catalytic oxidation is the key technique in this endeavor, which utilizes SO 2 as reaction raw material in the anode to remove it. The anodic SO 2 electro-catalytic oxidation could be coupled to the cathodic hydrogen evolution to achieve the simultaneous SO 2 removal and hydrogen production. Anodic catalyst plays a vital role in this SO 2 transformation. In this work, tangerine peel has been re-utilized to afford tangerine peel-derived biochar (TPB) to prepare TPB/CNT-derived Fe 3 C/Fe/C (N-doped) as a capable anodic catalyst to achieve this goal. With help of various characterization techniques and electrochemical testing, the optimal iron mass fraction and pyrolysis temperature were found to be 16 wt% Fe under 800 °C, with carboxylated carbon nanotube as carbon additive. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) image showed that the as-prepared TPB/CNT-derived Fe 3 C/Fe/C (N-doped) featured a unique morphology to encapsulate Fe 3 C/Fe with a layer of protecting carbon, which should contribute to the enhanced electro-catalytic performances. A flow electrolyzer was also assembled to illustrate practical application of the anodic catalyst in the real scenario. Owing to its lower cost, the as-prepared TPB/CNT-derived Fe 3 C/Fe/C (N-doped) will be advantageous to replace precious metals to mediate SO 2 electro-catalytic oxidation as one of promising environmental treatment techniques in the future.

Light-weight 1D heteroatoms-doped Fe3C@C nanofibers for microwave absorption with a thinner matching thickness

Chenghao Wang,LiShuai Zong,Nan Li,Yunxing Pan,Qian Liu,Fengfeng Zhang,Liyuan Qiao,Jinyan Wang,Xigao Jian

Emergency situation of electromagnetic microwave pollution generated by daily electronic devices urgently requires light-weight and efficient microwave absorption materials with thin thickness and low filling ratio. Herein, the heteroatoms-doped Fe 3 C@C nanofibers are fabricated from a mixture solution of Iron (III) 2, 4-pentanedionate (Fe(acac) 3 ) and nitrogen-containing polymer poly (phthalazinone ether nitrile ketone) (PPENK) by electrospinning and the following thermal treatment. The morphologies and compositions of nanofibers can be controlled by annealing temperature. The 1-Dimensional (1D) heteroatoms-doped Fe 3 C@C nanofibers display outstanding microwave absorption performance. When the filling ratio is 30 wt% in paraffin for nanofibers heat-treated in 700 ℃, the optimal reflection loss value is − 35.5 dB at 8.3 GHz with a thickness of 2.8 mm. Additionally, the maximal efficient absorption bandwidth reaches as wide as 4.9 GHz ranging from 13.1 to 18.0 GHz with a rather thin thickness of 1.6 mm. The Fe 3 C@C nanofibers have adjustable electromagnetic parameters and thus, balance impedance matching and microwave attenuation performance at the same time. This work investigates the relationship between microwave absorption performance and the chemical states of nitrogen atoms, revealing a facile strategy to prepare a multi-interface microwave absorber and presenting a candidate application for microwave absorption materials with low matching thickness.

A MOF-derived Fe3O4/Fe0/Fe3C-2-600 dual-cathode electro-Fenton system construction: Revealing the mechanism for active centers linked by Fe0 as an electronic transfer station for enhancing Fenton reaction

Chuan Cao,Yanjun Guo,Dadi Chen,Jun Cui,Xiang Hu

Conventional heterogeneous iron-based catalysts face challenges such as insufficient catalytic activity, sluggish Fe(Ⅲ)/Fe(Ⅱ) cycle, and hindered electron transfer during Fenton catalytic reactions. Herein, Fe 3 O 4 /Fe 0 /Fe 3 C-2-600, obtained by calcining MIL-88B (Fe) in-situ growth on stainless-steel mesh at varying temperatures, was served as a catalytic electrode in a dual-cathode electro-Fenton system. The catalytic mechanism was elucidated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Based on the calculations, the presence of Fe 0 could induce electron transfer to Fe(Ⅲ), accelerating the Fe(Ⅲ)/Fe(Ⅱ) cycle. Simultaneously, Fe 0 was functioned as an electron transfer station, rapidly exporting electrons from the internal Fe 3 O 4 core to the surface graphite layer, further activating H 2 O 2 . Due to the rapid electron transfer, the Fe 3 O 4 /Fe 0 /Fe 3 C-2-600 cathodes demonstrated remarkable catalytic activity, achieving a 97.7 % degradation of tetracycline (TC) within 12 min. According to electron spin resonance tests and quenching experiments, hydroxyl radicals (·OH) was identified as the main active species. In addition, the possible degradation pathways of TC were proposed, according to the results of high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). The Fe 3 O 4 /Fe 0 /Fe 3 C-2-600 cathode presented a promising strategy for developing an efficient and straightforward method to construct internal electric fields that could accelerate electron transfer in Fenton reactions. Moreover, the integration with the double-cathode electro-Fenton system, realizes the concept of reagent-free and sustainable catalysis, enhancing its practical application value.

Engineering the d-Orbital Electronic Delocalization of Atomic Fe–Co Dual-Metal Sites through Fe3C Nanoparticle Integration to Enhance Oxygen Reduction

Zizai Ma,Zihao Wan,Shuaili Zhao,Jinping Li,Jianping Du,Xiaoguang Wang

Bimetallic single-atom catalysts have garnered considerable interest in the field of the oxygen reduction reaction due to their unique electronic configurations and synergistic catalytic effects. However, precise modulation of d-orbital electron distribution at single-atom sites and comprehensive elucidation of the underlying catalytic mechanisms continue to present significant challenges. Herein, the FeCo(mlm)–N–C catalyst, integrating atomically dispersed Fe–Co dual-metal sites and Fe3C nanoparticles, was synthesized by using an encapsulation and ligand exchange strategy. Comprehensive analyses and theoretical simulations reveal that the incorporation of Fe3C nanoparticles induces significant d-orbital electron delocalization at the Fe active sites. This tailored electronic configuration effectively modulates Fe d–O p hybridization between the Fe active sites and adsorbed OH*. Consequently, it optimizes the occupancies of bonding and antibonding orbitals, thereby accelerating OH* desorption. This mechanism enables FeCo(mlm)–N–C to exhibit excellent catalytic performance and remarkable stability in both acidic and alkaline environments, while demonstrating superior activity in zinc-air batteries and proton exchange membrane fuel cells. This work not only presents a highly efficient non-noble metal electrocatalyst but also provides valuable insights into the rational development of advanced transition metal–nitrogen–carbon catalysts for energy-related applications.
