Degradation of octane using an efficient and stable core-shell Fe3O4@C during Fenton processes: Enhanced mass transfer, adsorption and catalysis

Yuan Zhuang,Jiemin Liu,Siyi Yuan,Ben Ge,Hao Du,Chen Qu,Haiying Chen,Chuandong Wu,Wenhui Li,Yan Zhang

Volatile organic compound (VOC) elimination technologies have been investigated to alleviate health damage and to reduce serious environmental risks. The degradation of hydrophobic and refractory VOCs calls for advanced oxidation processes with high degradation efficiency and low-level toxic byproduct generation. In this study, core-shell Fe 3 O 4 @C was employed as an advanced oxidation microreactor for hydrophobic and refractory VOC removal during the Fenton process, and octane was chosen as a typical target pollutant. The average octane removal efficiency increased by 41.6%, while the main byproduct concentrations decreased by 65.8% in the initial 60 min compared with Fe 3 O 4 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed the key role of Fe O C bond during the regeneration of Fe(II) species, and the enhanced octane adsorption process by the carbonyl sites. Calculation of mass transfer enhancement factor proved that the carbon shell was critical during mass transfer process. The advanced oxidation mechanism was investigated by detection and measurement of byproducts and hydroxyl radicals and XPS analysis. The synergism and the octane degradation pathway was proposed based on the two main types of reactions. This core-shell Fenton system suggests a promising approach for catalyst and microreactor design in advanced oxidation technologies for refractory VOCs removal.

Oil-phase cyclic magnetic adsorption to synthesize Fe3O4@C@TiO2-nanotube composites for simultaneous removal of Pb(II) and Rhodamine B

Jingtao Bi,Xin Huang,Jingkang Wang,Ting Wang,Hao Wu,Jinyue Yang,Haijiao Lu,Hongxun Hao

In this work, to simultaneously remove organic dyes and Pb(II) from wastewater, a series of magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @C@TiO 2 -nanotube composites were designed and successfully synthesized via a new facile oil-phase cyclic magnetic adsorption (OCMA) method. The structural properties of the synthesized composites were investigated by different characterization methods systematically. It was found that Fe 3 O 4 was uniformly deposited on the inner walls of TiO 2 nanotubes. Although a Type III band alignment was formed in the catalysts, Fe 3 O 4 @C@TiO 2 -nanotube composites exhibited enhanced light absorbing ability and enlarged absorption edge due to efficient separation of h + and e − , which was verified by UV–Vis (Ultraviolet–visible) and PL (Photoluminescence) spectra. Decontamination experiments of 1FeCTi showed that more than 98% of RhB and about 92% of Pb(II) ions could be removed through adsorptive removal in the dark equilibrium period and further elimination during the illuminating period. The pseudo-first-order model, L-H model and adsorption-reaction model were established to describe the adsorption of Pb(II) in the dark, photodegradation of RhB and further elimination of Pb(II), respectively. A four-step mechanism was proposed to describe the decontamination process of Pb(II) during the illuminating period according to the final forms of Pb (Pb δ1 , Pb δ2 , Pb 0 and PbO). Finally, it was found that the photocatalytic activity would be maintained in the recycle experiments due to the existence of 1FeCTi@PbO heterostructure.

Preparation of highly efficient and magnetically recyclable Fe3O4@C@Ru nanocomposite for the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue in visible light

Qi Zhang,Liangyun Yu,Chenchen Xu,Jinyong Zhao,Haiyang Pan,Ming Chen,Qi Xu,Guowang Diao

Herein, a kind of Fe 3 O 4 @C@Ru hybrid nanocomposites was successfully synthesized by a three-step process. The as-prepared products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy , high-resolution transmission electron microscopy , energy dispersive spectroscopy , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectrometry and photoluminescence emission spectrometry . The Ru nanoparticles loaded on the surface of carbon shell on Fe 3 O 4 @C nanospheres were nearly spherical with an average diameter of less than 5 nm. The photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) was carried out under the irradiation of simulated visible light to investigate the catalytic activity of the introduced nanomaterial . The results showed that the catalytic activity of Fe 3 O 4 @C@Ru nanocomposites in the MB photodegradation was higher than that of Fe 3 O 4 nanospheres or of Fe 3 O 4 @C nanospheres, as they could degrade 92.70% of the dye in 140 min of simulated sunlight irradiation without any other oxidant or reductant. The photodegradation reaction was first-order with the rate constant of 0.0176 min −1 at room temperature . The degradation rate of Fe 3 O 4 @C@Ru nanocomposites decreased very slightly after five cycles. Furthermore, they could be easily separated and recycled by using an external magnet. It indicated that the magnetically recoverable Fe 3 O 4 @C@Ru nanocomposites had a very broad application prospect in the field of environmental protection.

A heterogeneous domain-limited core–shell Fe3O4@C UV–Fenton system for mixed antibiotics degradation: insights into the synergistic effect and mechanisms

Zhiru Suo,Fushun Li,Yanjun Zhao,Yuan Zhuang,Binbin Huang,Chen Qu,Yifan Ren,Wenhui Li,Chuandong Wu,Jiemin Liu

The discharge of antibiotics into the environment has emerged as a pressing global issue. In particular, the removal of refractory mixed antibiotics requires advanced technologies with high adsorption efficiency and powerful degradation ability. In this study, we synthesized a heterogeneous core–shell Fe3O4@C catalyst as an efficient microreactor for adsorbing and degrading mixed antibiotics of sulfadimidine (SM2) and enrofloxacin (ENR) in aqueous solution under UV–Fenton conditions. The effects of different experimental conditions on the removal of antibiotics were investigated through L9(43) orthogonal experiments, and the synergistic effect and degradation mechanisms were systematically revealed. The results showed that the Fe3O4@C Fenton system demonstrated significantly enhanced catalytic activity, with hydroxyl radical (OH˙) concentrations of approximately 6.2 and 6.7 times higher than those observed in the Fe3O4 and Fe3O4 + AC Fenton systems, respectively. Moreover, the degradation pathway and mechanism analysis revealed that the adsorption and degradation behavior of the two mixed antibiotics in the Fe3O4@C Fenton system could be better described using pseudo-secondary kinetic models. The substantial improvement clearly indicates that the Fe3O4@C composite serves as a highly efficient microreactor for H2O2 decomposition in the Fenton process, thus providing a new avenue for the degradation of mixed antibiotics in water.

Remote synergy versus facet reconstruction in electrochemically driven interface evolution of Fe3C/Fe3O4/C and Cu2O/Cu/C anodes for potassium storage

Ji Ma,Jiazhe Yan,Chang Xu,Jianing Gai,Qinzhen Gong,Xiaotao Dai,Chunting Liu,Fengshou Liu

The electrochemical evolution of heterointerfaces in conversion-type anodes has long been poorly understood. Whether engineered interfaces survive cycling, and if not, how separated phases maintain function, remains unclear. Using two model systems Fe 3 C/Fe 3 O 4 /C (inert conductive phase) and Cu 2 O/Cu/C (oxidizable conductive phase), we uncover two diametrically opposite evolution pathways that are dictated solely by the oxidation behavior of the conductive phase. In the inert Fe 3 C system, the initial core-shell interface completely dissociates. Yet the porous carbon network alone maintains electronic connectivity, creating a remote synergy mode in which the carbon network sustains battery operation by compensating for lost heterointerface contact, without requiring direct interfacial contact between the active phases. In the oxidizable Cu system, we directly visualize a phenomenon. Cu 2 O undergoes an electrochemically driven facet reconstruction from the (111) to the (200) orientation, which progressively lowers the overpotential for the Cu → Cu 2 O reaction and makes the electrode self-optimizing with cycling. Post-mortem electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy provide direct visual evidence for both pathways. Kinetic analysis shows mixed diffusion capacitive control, with the CCC system reaching a 46.5% capacitive contribution at 1.0 mV s −1 . Full cells with K-PBA cathodes achieve 75.0% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 , demonstrating practical viability. This work challenges the long-held assumption that interfacial retention is necessary for electrochemistry. Instead, it establishes a universal design principle for durable conversion-type anodes. Ensuring electron-transport pathway integrity, whether through direct contact or indirect network connectivity, is the key. The discovery of electrochemically driven facet reconstruction also opens new avenues for controlling surface crystallography under operating conditions.

Triple-enzyme mimetic activity of Fe3O4@C@MnO2 composites derived from metal–organic frameworks and their application to colorimetric biosensing of dopamine

Xing Yanyan,Chen Meiling,Zhao Yunkun,Xu Jiabi,Hou Xiaohong

Novel Fe 3 O 4 @C@MnO 2 composites were successfully synthesized for the first time via an interfacial reaction between magnetic porous carbon and KMnO 4 , in which the magnetic porous carbon was derived from the pyrolysis of Fe-MIL-88A under N 2 atmosphere. Interestingly, the obtained Fe 3 O 4 @C@MnO 2 composites were found to have triple-enzyme mimetic activity including peroxidase-like, catalase-like, and oxidase-like activity. As a peroxidase mimic, Fe 3 O 4 @C@MnO 2 composites could catalyze the oxidation of TMB into a blue oxidized product by H 2 O 2 . As a catalase mimic, Fe 3 O 4 @C@MnO 2 could catalyze the decomposition of H 2 O 2 to generate O 2 and H 2 O. As an oxidase mimic, Fe 3 O 4 @C@MnO 2 could catalyze the direct oxidation of TMB to produce a blue oxidized product without H 2 O 2 . Reactive oxygen species measurements revealed that the oxidase-like activity originated from 1 O 2 and O 2 − ∙and little∙OH generated by the dissolved oxygen, which was catalyzed by the Fe 3 O 4 @C@MnO 2 in the TMB oxidation reaction. The oxidase-like activity of Fe 3 O 4 @C@MnO 2 was investigated in detail. Under the optimized conditions, a rapid, sensitive, visual colorimetric method for dopamine detection was developed based on the inhibitory effect of dopamine on the oxidase-like activity. The proposed method allows for dopamine detection with a limit of detection of 0.034 μM and a linear range of 0.125–10 μM. This new colorimetric method was successfully used for the determination of dopamine in human blood samples. Graphical abstract

DFT and MDS-assisted synthesis of functional core–shell COFs @ Fe3O4 @C nanoparticles for efficient extraction and detection of estrogens in food samples

Yuzhao Hou,Binyan Yang,Simon Sani Ocholi,Fengchao Wang,Zhifei Fu,Liming Wang,Lifeng Han,Pengli Du,Jia Zhao,Ping He,Zixin Zhang,Erwei Liu

Estrogen compounds in food exhibit bioaccumulation and endocrine-disrupting effects, posing serious risks to ecosystems and human health. Here, a novel core–shell magnetic covalent organic framework (COFs @ Fe 3 O 4 @C NPs) was developed for efficient enrichment and sensitive detection of estrogens in meat samples. The adsorption feasibility and mechanism of TAPB-DVA-COF were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics simulation (MDS). DFT calculations confirmed that hydrogen bonding and π–π stacking drive spontaneous adsorption, with adsorption energies ranging from −21.26 to −11.59 kcal mol −1 . MDS further revealed the formation of stable estrogen-COF complexes through close interfacial contact and persistent hydrogen bonding, confirming the existence of low-energy conformations. Based on these insights, COFs were anchored onto polydopamine-modified carbon-coated Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles at room temperature to fabricate a magnetic adsorbent, which was then employed as a magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) material. The adsorbent exhibited high surface area, strong magnetic responsiveness, and excellent stability. Coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), the established MSPE–HPLC method achieved a wide linear range ( R  ≥ 0.9996) and low detection limits (0.21–12.79 μg L −1 ). In pork and chicken samples, recoveries ranged from 91.7 % to 113.5 % with relative standard deviations of 1.0–6.1 %. This study demonstrates the superior performance of COFs @ Fe 3 O 4 @C NPs for estrogen detection and highlights MDS as an efficient and economical tool for predicting adsorption behavior, offering valuable guidance for material design.

A low-cost and one-step synthesis of a novel hierarchically porous Fe3O4/C composite with exceptional porosity and superior Li+ storage performance

Luyu Yang,Wei Liu,Huanlei Wang,Shuang Liu,Jifei Wang,Jiaxin Chen

A hierarchical pore structure is believed to be an excellent architecture for metal oxide anode materials of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the difficulty and complication in synthesis limit their further application. In this work, a novel Fe3O4/C composite with a hierarchical pore carbon (HPC) network has been synthesized simply by one-step pyrolysis synthesis using ferrous gluconate as the precursor. This hierarchical porous framework derived from a loose assembly of the intersecting porous carbon rods presents a wide range of pore sizes and a rather large surface area (>226 cm2 g−1). Embedded with well-crystalline Fe3O4 particles, the resulting Fe3O4@HPC composite exhibits a high capacity of 1112 mA h g−1 at the end of the 100th cycle and an enhanced rate performance of above 600 mA h g−1 at a high current density of 2000 mA g−1. This might derive from the unique hierarchical pore system with a high overall porosity, which can not only facilitate the electrolyte diffusion but also alleviate severe volume variation efficiently in lithium ion insertion/extraction. More importantly, this provides us with a successful example to fabricate advanced anode materials simply by one-step pyrolysis of cheap organic–inorganic hybrids at low-cost.

A dual-targeting Fe3O4@C/ZnO-DOX-FA nanoplatform with pH-responsive drug release and synergetic chemo-photothermal antitumor in vitro and in vivo

Xuan Liu,Chen Wang,Xueyan Wang,Chen Tian,Yuhua Shen,Manzhou Zhu

Designing a proper intelligent platform to target cancer cells accurately and reducing its toxic side effects on normal tissues remain a challenge in medicine application. Herein, a novel dual-targeted and tumor microenvironment-triggered Fe 3 O 4 @carbon(C)/ZnO-doxorubicin (DOX) -folic acid (FA) drug delivery system with porous structure was designed and fabricated for the first time. The co-presence of Fe 3 O 4 core and FA molecules functioned successfully could successfully realize the magnetic targeting and cancer cell-specific targeting. In addition, pH-responsive ZnO and porous carbon both derived directly from zinc-2-methylimidazolate complex (Zn-ZIF) could play the roles of “gatekeeper” and photothermal agent, respectively. The former could efficiently block the drug within mesoporous in blood environment for decreasing the damage to the normal tissues and achieving the controlled DOX release in the simulated and real acidic tumor microenvironment. And the latter could exhibit the intrinsic photothermal conversion efficiency upon 638 nm laser irradiation. Therefore, the Fe 3 O 4 @C/ZnO-DOX-FA nanoplatform integrated dual targeting, controlled chemotherapy with photothermal therapy (PTT) for cancer, displaying a significantly superior synergistic anticancer efficiency both in vitro and in vivo experiments to either monotherapy. Above results suggested the prepared nanoplatforms might be a promising candidate for effectively synergetic therapeutics to cancers.

Microwave absorption performance of magnetic-dielectric Fe3O4@C@PPy composites with a core-double-shell structure prepared by a low-temperature self-propagation method

Kai Sun,Xuechun Yang,Yuan Yuan,Jinjiu Qi,Boyang Liu,Andrey Karlovich Sarychev,Runhua Fan

Microwave absorbers have been developed to counter electromagnetic pollution, and enhancing their performance remains an ongoing concern. In this paper, carbon-coated Fe 3 O 4 and polypyrrole (PPy) were combined to construct composites with a core-double-shell structure, and the influences of multiple synergistic effects from ternary components, carbon defects, and microstructure on the electromagnetic properties of Fe 3 O 4 @C@PPy composites were investigated. The Fe 3 O 4 @C@PPy composites were successfully prepared by the low-temperature self-propagation method and in-situ oxidation polymerization process, achieving a −53.67 dB reflection loss at 12.24 GHz when the sample thickness was 2.13 mm, and the effective absorbing (RL < 10 dB) band covered 4.16 GHz (13.84–18 GHz) with a corresponding thickness of only 1.63 mm. The core-double-shell structure perfectly integrated various advantages of each component as well as provided multiple reflections and scatterings. Meanwhile, the polarization loss was notably enhanced by heterogeneous interfaces, and the dielectric-magnetic loss mechanism cooperatively accelerated the dissipation of electromagnetic wave energy.

A Novel Fe3O4@C/RM Composite Fabricated from Red Mud and Scrap Tire-Derived Carbon Black: Heterogeneous Activation of Peroxymonosulfate for Oxidative Degradation of Orange II

Wang Xilin,Sun Xiaojing,Dai Ping,Xu Dongyan

This study focuses on preparation of a novel Fe 3 O 4 @C/RM composite by carbothermal reduction of red mud (RM) with scrap tire-derived carbon black and its application for the degradation of orange II in water by activating PMS. X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements revealed that hematite (Fe 2 O 3 ) was reduced to Fe 3 O 4 in the pyrolysis process above 600 o C. The reduction pathway of Fe 2 O 3 was inferred by detecting the gas emissions during carbothermal reduction. Morphology analysis indicates that Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were encapsulated in a carbon matrix, forming a composite with the residual components of RM. The as-prepared Fe 3 O 4 @C/RM composite exhibited high performance toward orange II degradation with 95.9% removal of orange II within 90 min. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching tests were applied to illustrate the activation processes of peroxymonosulfate. Both radical and non-radical oxygen species are responsible for the efficient degradation of orange II in the Fe 3 O 4 @C/RM/PMS system.

Photonic Hydrogels for Synergistic Visual Bacterial Detection and On-Site Photothermal Disinfection

Ge Xie,Shuo Du,Qiuyi Huang,Min Mo,Yujie Gao,Miaomiao Li,Juan Tao,Lianbin Zhang,Jintao Zhu

Rapid and sensitive diagnostics in the early stage of bacterial infection and immediate treatment play critical roles in the control of infectious diseases. However, it remains challenging to develop integrated systems with both rapid detection of bacterial infection and timely on-demand disinfection ability. Herein, we demonstrate a photonic hydrogel platform integrating visual diagnosis and on-site photothermal disinfection by incorporating Fe3O4@C nanoparticles into a poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-co-polyacrylamide (PHEMA-co-PAAm) matrix. In vitro experiments demonstrate that such a hydrogel can respond to pH variation caused by bacterial metabolism and generate the corresponding color changes to realize naked-eye observation. Meanwhile, its excellent photothermal conversion ability enables it to effectively kill bacteria by destroying cell membranes under near-infrared irradiation. Moreover, the pigskin infection wound model also verifies the bacterial detection performance and disinfection ability of the hydrogel in vivo. Our strategy demonstrates a new approach for visual diagnosis and treatment of bacterial infections.
