Carbon materials featuring hierarchical pores and atomically dispersed metal sites are promising catalysts for energy storage and conversion applications. Herein, we developed a facile strategy to construct functional carbon materials with a fluffy peony-like structure and dense binary FeCo-N x active sites (termed as f-FeCo-CNT). By regulating the metal content in precursors, a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected conductive carbon nanotubes network was in-situ formed throughout the atomically dispersed FeCo-NC matrix during pyrolysis. Taking advantage of rich pore hierarchy and co-existence of highly active FeCo-N x sites and beneficial FeCo alloy nanoparticles, the f-FeCo-CNT material exhibited excellent bifunctional performance towards oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution reactions (ORR/OER) with respect to the atomically dispersed FeCo-NC (SA-f-FeCo-NC) and commercial Pt/C+RuO 2 mixture, surpassing the SA-f-FeCo-NC with a 20 mV higher ORR half-wave potential and a 100 mV lower OER overpotential (at 10.0 mA/cm 2 ). Remarkably, the f-FeCo-CNT-assembled Zn-air battery (ZAB) possessed a maximum specific power of 195.8 mW/cm 2 , excellent rate capability, and very good cycling stability at large current density of 20.0 mA/cm 2 . This work provides a facile and feasible synthetic strategy of constructing low-cost cathode materials with excellent comprehensive ZAB performance.

Recently, Prussian blue analogues (PBA) have emerged as attractive precursors or templates for the construction of porous carbon-based microwave absorption (MA) materials because of their open framework, tunable components and mild synthesis conditions. Herein, for the first time, trimetallic FeCoNi-PBA nanocubes are introduced as precursors, and then a novel core-shell structured composites, in which FeCo and FeCoNi alloy nanoparticles are uniformly encapsulated in N-doped porous carbon (FeCo/FeCoNi@NPC), are successfully synthesized via a pyrolysis process . Benefiting from the strong synergetic effects among multiple components (FeCo, FeCoNi alloys and N-doped carbon species) and the hierarchical porous structure , the absorber exhibits significantly enhanced MA performance in comparison with FeNi@NPC and FeCo@NPC derived from bimetallic PBAs. Impressively, the minimum reflection loss (RL) is up to −67 dB at 14.7 GHz with a thin thickness of 1.91 mm, and the corresponding effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) reaches 6.24 GHz, covering the whole Ku-band. When the thickness is 2.05 mm, the maximum EAB of 6.6 GHz can be obtained. In particular, the absorber can also achieve full absorption of X-band at 2.68 mm. More importantly, the multi-metallic PBA derivation strategy sheds new light on development of lightweight carbon-based absorbers with high performance, low cost and easy synthesis.

As an efficient non-precious metal catalyst, FeCo alloy was widely used in various catalytic reactions. Owing to the organic pollution in ecosystem, it has attracted much attention in heterogeneous Fenton reaction. Unfortunately, their application was restricted by slow process and high leaching. To overcome these shortcomings simultaneously, herein, FeCo@nitrogen-doped graphitized carbon (NGC) core/shell composite was synthesized via one-step annealing Prussian blue analogue. In microwave assisted Fenton reaction (MAFR), malachite green (MG) degradation time was only 2.5 min, and the rate constant was 2.0 min −1 , about 20 times higher than heterogeneous Fenton reaction. Synergistic index was 3.88, meaning extra 288% of removal efficiency was yield in peroxymonosulfate (PMS)+MW+FeCo@NGC system. The effect of microwave-activation was divided into thermal effect and non-thermal effect. SO 4 ·− produced through thermal effect occupied 73% ± 8% of total number. The contribution of thermal effect was estimated to be 65% ± 7% for MG removal. Non-thermal effect was clarified by hotspots effect theory. Due to protection of NGC shell, Co 3+/2+ leaching in composite was only one-tenth of pure FeCo. FeCo@NGC composite could be rapidly recycled due to ferromagnetic behavior with saturation magnetization of 98.7 emu/g. 89.3% of degradation efficiency was maintained after the 5 th cycle.

The integration of magnetic materials with dielectric carbon architectures is promising for enhancing microwave absorption properties due to their inherent resonance properties. In this paper, magnetic composites constituted by high-entropy spinel oxides/conductive heterogeneous FeCo phase were obtained through solid-phase sintering and hydrogen reduction process, which show excellent wave-absorbing properties by modulating the elemental Cr content. Further coating with carbon nanotubes via chemical surface modification dramatically improves the composite’s microwave absorption capability across multiple frequency bands, achieving a reflection loss of − 43.10 dB at 3.1 mm thickness in the C-band and an exceptional minimum reflection loss of − 44.20 dB at 1.5 mm thickness in the Ku-band. This tri-phase composite demonstrates a wide effective absorption bandwidth of 4.77 GHz at a remarkably thin matched thickness of just 1.3 mm. The obtained superior microwave-absorbing properties were ascribed to excellent impedance matching and attenuation properties contributed by natural resonance, interfacial polarization, conductive loss, multiple reflections, and scattering in the multi-component system with abundant heterogeneous interfaces. This unique absorption behavior highlights its potential for next-generation compact microwave absorption applications.

Exploring the cooperative amplification of peroxidase-like metal nanocomposites and cycled hairpin assembly is intriguing for sensitive bioanalysis. Herein, we report the first design of a unique electrochemical biosensor based on mimicking Au@FeCo nanozymes and bicycled hairpin assembly (BHA) for synergistic signal amplification. By loading the enzyme-like FeCo alloy in Au nanoparticles (AuNPs), the as-synthesized Au@FeCo hybrids display great improvement of electronic conductivity and active surface area and excellent mimic catalase activity to H2O2 decomposition into •OH radicals. The immobilization of Au@FeCo in an electrode sensing interface is stabilized via the resulting electrodeposition in HAuCl4 while efficiently accelerating the electron transfer of electroactive ferrocene (Fc). Upon the immobilization of a helping hairpin (HH) via Au–S bonds, a specific DNA trigger (T*) is introduced to activate BHA operation through competitive strand displacement reactions among recognizing hairpin (RH), signaling hairpin (SH), and HH. T* and RH are rationally released to catalyze two cycles, in which the transient depletion of dsDNA intermediates rapidly drives the progressive hairpin assemblies to output more products SH·HH. Thus, the efficient amplification of Au@FeCo mimic catalase activity combined with BHA leads to a significantly increased current signal of Fc dependent on miRNA-21 analogous to T*, thereby directing the creation of a highly sensitive electrochemical biosensor having applicable potential in actual samples.

Currently, development of OER/ORR bifunctional electric catalysts with low cost, high catalytic activity and stability is the key step to promote the practical application of zinc-air batteries. Herein, composite catalyst with manganese oxide on N and O co-doped carbon nanotubes encapsulated with FeCo alloy (CoFe@CNT/MnO) was prepared in situ on CFP by hydrothermal and CVD pyrolysis methods. Owing to rich C O functional group on in situ growing carbon nanotubes with 3D open structure, alloying effect of CoFe core metal embedded in carbon nanotube and the contribution of MnO supported on carbon nanotubes to ORR performance and stability, the CoFe@CNT/MnO catalyst exhibits low overpotential of 193 mV at the current density of 10 mA/cm 2 for OER, larger diffusion-limited current density of 5.75 mA/cm 2 and half-wave potential (E 1/2 = 0.85 V) for ORR, high specific capacity (810 mAh/g Zn ) and peak power density (164 mW/cm 2 ) with the Zn-air battery and superior stability. Moreover, the peak power density of the single CoFe@CNT/MnO-based quasi-solid state ZAB could reach 142 mW/cm 2 , and two quasi-solid state ZABs connected in series can power a mini fan.

Metal-nitrogen-carbon (M–N–C) catalysts are promising alternatives to precious metal-based bifunctional catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in Zn-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, FeCo@nitrogen doped carbon nanotube/nitrogen doped reduced graphene oxide (FeCo@NCNT/N-rGO) catalyst with unique 3D heterostructure was synthesized through one-step pyrolysis of FeCo-ZIF-8 precursor anchored on graphene oxide (FeCo-ZIF-8/GO). Benefiting from the coupling of FeCo dual-metal sites with nitrogen-doped carbon substrates, the FeCo@NCNT/N-rGO catalyst achieved extraordinary bifunctional oxygen electrocatalytic activity, exhibiting a high ORR half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.881 V (vs. RHE), which was superior to the Pt/C catalyst (0.838 V), and OER overpotential of 343 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , merely inferior to RuO 2 by 33 mV. The resulting ΔE (defined as E j=10 − E 1/2 ) reaches an impressively low value of 0.69 V, highlighting its superior reversible oxygen electrocatalytic performance. Meanwhile, achieving a high-power density of 240 mW cm −2 and open circuit voltage (OCV) of 1.488 V in ZAB applications, superior to that of Pt/C + RuO 2 in ZAB (1.447 V; 143 mW cm −2 ). Flexible solid-state ZAB with FeCo@NCNT/N-rGO achieves 1.416 V OCV and 47.4 mW cm −2 power density, remaining stable even when bent 180°. This study guides design of dual-site non-precious metal bifunctional oxygen catalysts.

Bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts with low cost and high catalytic activity are critically important for improving the energy conversion efficiency of metal-air batteries. In this work, a novel electrocatalyst, denoted as NC-Fe x Co y , was synthesized via the growth of Fe-ZIF-67 on the surface of a chitosan-derived aerogel, followed by subsequent annealing treatment. The adjustable pore structure of the chitosan-derived carbon aerogel facilitates enhanced availability of active sites. Moreover, the synergistic interplay between the FeCo nanoalloy and the nitrogen-doped carbon framework further augments its catalytic performance. As expected, the optimized catalyst NC-Fe 1 Co 3 exhibits exceptional bifunctional electrocatalytic activity, achieving a half-wave potential of 0.88 V for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and an overpotential of only 378 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Furthermore, the assembled liquid ZABs employing the NC-Fe 1 Co 3 as air cathode demonstrated outstanding performance, delivering a remarkable power density of 240 mW cm −2 and long-time charge-discharge stability over 2000 h. Additionally, the flexible ZABs fabricated with this catalyst achieved an even higher power density of 116 mW cm −2 , coupled with a robust cycle stability lasting over 200 h.

We report large and tunable coercivity of body-centered tetragonal (bct) Fe 76 Co 24 nanocrystals grown on β-Fe 5.33 Co 1.67 Se 8 via topochemical deselenization. By controlling the reaction temperature and trioctylphosphine content, the mean grain size ( D ) and loading of the bct-Fe 76 Co 24 nanocrystals can be precisely regulated. This size control leads to dramatic variations in magnetic properties. At room temperature, the coercivity increases from 120 Oe to 600 Oe as D grows from 5.16 nm to 5.36 nm. The bct-Fe 76 Co 24 with D < ∼4.51 nm becomes superparamagnetic at 300 K. At 2 K, they exhibit a large coercivity, reaching 4230 Oe for 3.65 nm bct-Fe 76 Co 24 nanocrystals with the blocking temperature T B (≈ 160 K). In contrast, the nanocrystals with D = 5.36 nm shows a much lower coercivity of 760 Oe at 2 K, highlighting a strong size-dependent effect. Magnetic alignment of a bulk composed of 5.36 nm Fe 76 Co 24 at 300 K results in a coercivity of 360 Oe, which is slightly lower than that in randomly oriented state. Analysis of the initial magnetization curves reveals that magnetization reversal in the 3.65 nm nanocrystals is dominated by domain nucleation, whereas in the 5.36 nm particles, it involves a combination of domain nucleation and domain-wall pinning.

Lack of highly efficient, inexpensive, and easily available catalysts severely limits the practical applicability of electrochemically sensing assay towards 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT). Herein, four kinds of Fe–Co bimetallic Prussian blue analogues (FeCo–PBAs) with different molar ratios of Fe to Co were prepared using a simple coprecipitation method. Interestingly, Fe(III) in K 3 [Fe(CN) 6 ] can be reduced to Fe(II) by adding trisodium citrate dehydrate, which could offer a new clue to synthesize PBAs with Fe(II) core ions. With the optimizational FeCo-PBA synthesized at a 0.5/1 M ratio of Fe to Co as an electrocatalyst , the constructed sensor shows excellent comprehensive performance for the 5-HT assay with a high sensitivity of 0.856 μA μM −1 and an ultralow detection limit of 8.4 nM. Under the optimum conditions, linearity was obtained in the ranges of 0.1–10.0 μM and 10.0–200.0 μM and preferable recoveries ranged from 97.8% to 103.0% with relative standard deviation (RSD) < 4.0%. The integrated properties of FeCo-PBA can be comparable to previously reported electrocatalysts for the 5-HT assay including noble metal-based and expensive carbon (graphene and carbon nanotubes)-based electrocatalysts. The proposed sensor also exhibits outstanding selectivity, reproducibility, and practicality for real sample analyses. This work is the first report on the PBA-based sensor for the 5-HT assay, verifying the practicability of this high-performance sensor for the 5-HT assay.

Simple and efficient preparation high-performance magnetic carbon-based nanocomposites as electromagnetic wave-absorbing materials is a research hotspot. Here, employing a straightforward, ecologically friendly, and effective solid-state technique, FeCo/graphene nanocomposites with good electromagnetic wave absorption capabilities were successfully fabricated without the use of any external carbon sources. m-NaCl powder is combined with Co(acac)2 and Fe(acac)3 and then annealed at a particular temperature. During the annealing process, FeCo nanoparticles were synthesized and supported on graphene nanocomposites. Following annealing at 700 °C, the material showed an ideal reflection loss of −71.63 dB at 10.8 GHz, an effective bandwidth of 4.24 GHz, and a thickness of 2.68 mm. The radar cross section (RCS) of FeCo/C-700 is less than −10 dB m2, which provides evidence that the samples have good radar wave attenuation capabilities when the scattering angle is between 0 and 60°. The approach for creating graphene composites with FeCo nanoparticles suggested in this study serves as a crucial source of inspiration for the later development of new magnetic carbon nanocomposite systems.

Carbon-based transition-metal electrocatalysts with one-dimensional porous nanofibrous architectures generally exhibit favorable electrical conductivity and abundant exposed defects, making them attractive for bifunctional electrocatalysis. However, densely stacked fibrous networks often suffer from sluggish electrolyte infiltration and inefficient gas escape, while transition-metal species are also prone to aggregation during high-temperature treatment, resulting in insufficient active-site utilization and restricted catalytic performance. In this work, a morphology-reconstruction strategy is developed to fabricate hierarchically porous FeCo–carbon microspheres for efficient bifunctional electrocatalysis in alkaline media. A formamide-assisted FeCo coordination precursor, together with a PTFE-containing electrohydrodynamic system, which induces jet breakup via Rayleigh instability and enables an in situ transition from conventional continuous fibers to three-dimensional porous microspheres. The obtained FA-FeCo@PMS catalyst consists of highly dispersed FeCo species embedded within a defect-rich N/O/P-doped porous carbon framework. Benefiting from the reconstructed porous microsphere architecture and the homogeneous distribution of active species, FA-FeCo@PMS exhibits enhanced electrolyte accessibility, facilitated gas diffusion, and improved interfacial charge-transfer behavior. Electrochemical measurements in 1.0 M KOH demonstrate that FA-FeCo@PMS delivers overpotentials of 300 and 350 mV at 10 and 50 mA cm −2 for the oxygen evolution reaction, respectively, together with an HER overpotential of 175 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , as well as satisfactory long-term durability and low charge transfer resistance. This work provides a feasible strategy for simultaneously regulating catalyst morphology and active-species dispersion toward efficient bifunctional electrocatalysis.
