Developing efficient and cost-effective counter electrodes (CEs) to catalyze triiodide reduction reaction is a persistent objective for high-performance dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). One promising solution is to design electron-enriched electrode materials by combining conductive polymers with alloys. In this work, ternary hybrid PtM@polyaniline (M = Ni, FeNi) CEs are synthesized by one-step replacement reaction and in-situ polymerization reaction. When assembling into liquid-junction DSSCs, the power conversion efficiencies of 8.52% and 8.39% for the devices tailored with PtNi@polyaniline and PtFeNi@polyaniline CEs can be obtained. The experimental results demonstrate that the enhanced photovoltaic performances are mainly attributed to matching work function and high electrocatalytic activity of these well-designed hybrid CEs. Arising from the competitive reactions between transition metal and I 2 /I 3 − species, the dissolution reaction of Pt in liquid electrolyte is restricted and therefore the long-term stability of corresponding devices are significantly enhanced.

The extraction of chitin/chitosan from biowaste shrimp shells involves the heavy use of strong acids and alkaline solutions, resulting in a series of decomposed amino acids in the extraction waste. Herein, we demonstrate a new strategy to grow FeNi nanoalloys encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (3FeNi-NCNTs) at a high percentage by sintering the extracted amino acids, FeCl 3 , NiCl 2 and melamine at 900 ℃ in N 2 . The FeNi-NCNT exhibits a competitive limiting current density in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) to the commercial 20% Pt/C, with the onset potential and half-wave potential at 0.98 V and 0.84 V versus RHE. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance also rivals the RuO 2 catalyst, and the overpotential (E j =10 mAcm -2 - E 1/2 ) of as low as 0.76 V, highlighting a green pathway to yield superior bifunctional catalysts at low cost. When used in zinc-air batteries (ZABs), the aqueous ZAB showed excellent cyclic and rate performance, together with the peak power density and specific capacity of 173.6 mW cm -2 and 809.9 mAh g -1 (corresponding to an energy density of XXX Wh kg -1 based on the mass of consumed zinc); and the flexible ZAB with a polyacryl-amide hydrogel electrolyte also exhibited a high peak power density of 133 mWcm -2 and a long cycle life of 140 h, superior to the reference Pt/RuO 2 -based ZABs, highlighting a sustainable biowaste upcycling of shrimp shell valorization on energy storage. The search for lightweight and broadband microwave absorbing materials (MAMs) is crucial to fulfill the demands of practical applications. Herein, an FeNi alloy/graphene foam (FNGF) composite was prepared by a facile one-step hydrothermal method. The microwave-absorbing properties of the FNGF with varying concentrations of FeNi alloy (samples designated as 1#, 2#, 3#, 4#, and 5#) were systematically studied. Remarkably, with an ultra-low filling content of 5 wt%, the composite still achieves excellent microwave absorbing performance. As expected, the effective absorption bandwidth of sample 1# covers the entire Ku band (11.76–18 GHz) at a thickness of only 2.09 mm, and sample 3# reaches a minimum reflection loss of −63.76 dB at 15.68 GHz. FeNi alloys have a significant influence on the microscopic morphology, phase structure, and electromagnetic properties of composites. The superior MA properties can be attributed to the synergistic effect of superior impedance matching, robust dielectric loss, and magnetic loss. Notably, FNGF presents as a promising candidate for lightweight broadband MAMs.

Developing noble-metal-free electrocatalysts for efficient oxygen evolution reactions (OER) is urgently desired to obtain green hydrogen by water electrolysis. Coupling FeNi catalysts with other transition metals is an effective strategy to improve the OER performance, but the electronic structure regulation of the catalytic center is challenging. Herein, heterostructures catalyst composed of MoC and FeNi alloy embedded in N -doped biochar (denoted as MoC–FeNi@NLC) was in situ synthesized by pyrolysis of lignin-metals coordination complex. MoC–FeNi@NLC displayed an overpotential of 198 mV and a long steady running time of 200 h at 10 mA·cm −2 in alkaline media. Furthermore, MoC-FeNi@NLC has demonstrated excellent Faradaic efficiency (FE) of over 90 %. A voltage of 1.50 V was required based on the MoC–FeNi@NLC and Pt/C coupling system, which was superior to that of commercial noble metal catalysts (Pt/C || Ir/C, 1.57 V). The density functional theory demonstrated that FeNi alloy balanced the adsorption energy of OER intermediates and regulated the orbital overlap of Mo above Fermi level. While the lignin-derived carbon layer prevented the deactivation and dissolution of catalytic center. The construction strategy of transition metal alloys and carbides heterojunction by the assistance of sustainable lignin derivatives and its structure–activity relationship toward OER electrocatalytic process provides a promising and cost-efficient pathway for the design of high-performance and stable OER catalysts.

Smartphone-based analysis is an emerging technique that provides a wide range of biomedical applications in point-of-care testing (POCT). Here, we have developed a portable and rapid sensing platform. It integrates an activated FeNi foam with specifically boosted peroxidase (POD)-like activity as signal generator , a lower light photography device and an image digitization application (APP) that help to realize direct signal readout through a smartphone. Significantly, by introducing polydopamine nanoparticles (PDNPs) on activated FeNi foam, the POD-like activity can be enhanced over tenfold, in sharp contrast to the silent oxidase (OXD)-like activity. It is determined that the improved catalytic performance originates from the winkle structures on activated FeNi foam, synergistic effect between Fe and Ni and the cycles between Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ and catechol/quinones for electron transfer and mass transport. Further, the use of PDNPs as an immobilization linker enables the construction of an integrated nanozyme by immobilizing natural enzymes like glucose oxidase . Combined with a multifunctional photography system, sensitive and rapid detection of H 2 O 2 and glucose were achieved, the limit of detection (LOD) was 10.2 µM and 40.6 µM, respectively, and detection time was less than 6 min. This highlights the potential of the smartphone-based sensing platform for online monitoring biomarkers in a high-throughput and point-of-care format. Considering the significance of efficient catalysts and the growing demand for POCT, our study contributes to the development of peroxidase mimics based on metal foam and provides valuable insights for improving the performance of photography devices in visual detection.

The rapid growth of electronic devices has intensified electromagnetic wave pollution. Electromagnetic wave absorption (EWA) materials provide a green solution by converting electromagnetic energy into thermal energy. Achieving high-performance EWA requires a fine balance between impedance matching and energy dissipation, demanding precise control of microstructure, interfaces, and electronic states of the materials. However, complex multiscale structures involve strongly coupled structural evolution, which reduces controllability and hinders clear structure–performance correlation. Here, a cobalt-based metal–organic framework (Co-MOF) is employed as the precursor. By regulating the contents of Ni 2 + and Fe 3 + , the structural evolution and the modulation of localized electronic states during the etching process are systematically elucidated. In addition, the in situ competitive coordination and etching-competitive coordination systems reveal the mechanistic differences between atomic-scale induced reconstruction and directional destructive reconstruction. Benefiting from synergistic regulation spanning atomic, nanoscale, and microscale levels, the obtained FeNi/C composite achieves an effective absorption bandwidth of 7.13 GHz at an ultrathin thickness of 1.97 mm. Combining DFT, COMSOL, and CST simulations, the role of etching engineering in enhancing EWA performance is elucidated from electronic, local-field, and macroscopic perspectives, providing a theoretical basis for its controllable application and the rational design of high-performance absorbers.

Developing efficient, durable non-noble bifunctional electrocatalysts is key for overall water splitting. Herein, we present a hierarchical FeNi LDH/SnS 2 heterojunction array integrating cation vacancy engineering with heterointerface construction. The multilevel architecture comprises a conductive carbon cloth skeleton, SnS 2 nanosheet scaffolds, and cation-vacancy-rich FeNi LDH nanosheets. Vacancies modulate the electronic structure of FeNi LDH, while the heterointerface induces directional electron transfer to SnS 2 . Density functional theory calculations reveal elevated density of states near the Fermi level and optimized d -band center for balanced intermediate adsorption/desorption. Consequently, the cation-vacancy-rich FeNi LDH/SnS 2 electrode achieves outstanding bifunctional activity in alkaline media, with overpotentials of only 100 mV (hydrogen evolution reaction) and 197 mV (oxygen evolution reaction) at 10 mA cm −2 . An overall water splitting electrolyzer requires just 1.52 V to reach 10 mA cm −2 and operates stably over 140 h, surpassing Pt/C||IrO 2 . This work offers an effective strategy for designing high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts.

The anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a critical yet kinetically sluggish half-cell process in water electrolysis and metal-air batteries. This study proposes an innovative approach to sustainable resource recycling and the synthesis of self-supported metal-organic framework (MOF) electrocatalysts in a single step. The utilization of recycled stainless steel mesh (SSM) as both a substrate and a self-sacrificial template facilitated the successful engineering of the deposition of crystalline FeNi-MOF-74 ( FeNidobdc ) with homogeneous morphology, designated as FeNidobdc/SSM (1, 6, 12, 24, and 36 h, labeled FeNidobdc/SSM 1 to 5). Among them, the optimal FeNidobdc/SSM4 catalyst demonstrated exceptional OER performance, featuring a low Tafel slope (63.9 mV dec −1 ), a low overpotential (η 10 = 210 mV), and prolonged stability (31.8 h current retention). The enhanced electrocatalytic performance of the material can be attributed to several factors, including the high porosity and mesoporous structure of the MOF, the optimized Fe/Ni content, the multi-metal doped lattice, and the inherent stability of the SSM substrate. The use of SSM not only provides a self-supported framework but also enables in situ sacrificial growth, thereby enhancing interfacial binding and long-term cycling stability. Furthermore, the abundance of SSM offers a sustainable source of Fe and Ni, making it an ideal template for OER catalysis, while the self-supported design simplifies preparation steps by eliminating the need for additional binders or conductive agents. This study establishes a new pathway for sustainable resource recycling and one-step synthesis of high-performance, self-supported MOF electrocatalysts for OER applications.

Carbon-supported bimetallic sites show great potential in the field of oxygen reduction electrocatalysis, yet multi-scale structural engineering of carbon supports plays an important role in modulating the catalytic activity. Herein, we ingeniously synthesized an interconnected multi-dimensional porous carbon matrixs supported FeNi bimetallic catalyst (denoted by FeNi-NC/CNT) through pyrolyzing ZIF-8 precursors mixed with polystyrene (PS) microspheres as a pore-forming agent and carbon nanotubes. The optimized FeNi-NC/CNT catalyst exhibited exceptional bifunctional catalytic activity with high half-wave potential E 1/2 = 0.87 V in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) process and high activity in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with E j=10 = 1.60 V, leading to an ultralow potential difference (730 mV) that is much lower than that of control sample (843 mV) without PS perforation. In practical application, the FeNi-NC/CNT based zinc-air battery achieved a peak power density of 148.6 mW cm −2 and a steady operation time exceeding 150 h, with a low potential difference of only 950 mV. The enhanced bifunctional catalytic activity can be attributed to multi-dimensional frameworks composed of hierarchical porous carbons and conductive CNTs, provide adequate exposure to active sites and mass/electron transfer pathway, and the tuned interaction of FeNi that contributes to equilibrating the intrinsic ORR/OER bifunctional catalytic activity. Metal exsolution in perovskite oxide has emerged as an effective way to boost CO2 electrolysis activity in solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs). It is crucial to precisely tailor the exsolution characteristics to optimize the catalytic functionality and boost the catalytic activity. Herein, we reveal that the Cr cations doping effectively modify the crystal defects and regulate the metal exsolution of Sr2Fe1.1Ni0.2Cr0.2Mo0.5O6-δ (SFNCM). FeNi alloy nanoparticles with an average particle size of ~10 nm and a particle density of exceeding 1500 μm-2 were exsolved on the surface of SFNCM perovskite, which increases the active sites and enhances CO2 electrolytic activity. The SFNCM based SOEC decorated with abundant FeNi alloy nanoparticles achieves a high current density of 2.57 A cm-2 at 1.6 V, superior to other Sr2Fe1.3Ni0.2Mo0.5O6-δ counterparts. The experimental and theoretical calculation results demonstrate the controllability of the exsolution via engineering of the perovskite structural feature. This work offers a new perspective on lattice doping strategy for the regulation of metal exsolution.

The synergistic effect between the transition metal sulfide alloy core, the N-doped graphene shell, and the internal interfacial potential serves to regulate the electronic structure and facilitate electron transfer. We used Fe-based Prussian blue analogues as a single precursor to prepare a N-doped graphene-coated metal core–shell structure (FeNi@NG) through hydrothermal and high-temperature solid phase reactions. The S source was then introduced and annealed, yielding a S, N co-doped graphene-encapsulated metal core–shell structure (FeNi–S@NG). Finally, a nitrogen-doped graphene-coated metal core–shell structure with S defects (S–FeNi@NG) was obtained through NaBH4 liquid-phase reduction. The synergistic effect between the transition metal sulfide alloy core and the N-doped graphene shell, in conjunction with the internal interfacial potential regulate the electronic structure and facilitate electron transfer. Numerous sulfur vacancies accelerate electron transfer and enhance OER catalytic performance. The optimized material, S–FeNi@NG, exhibited excellent OER catalytic performance, with an overpotential of 250 mV (at 10 mA cm−2) and a Tafel slope of 90.95 mV dec−1 in an alkaline electrolyte.

The anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) offers a promising prospect for large-scale hydrogen electro-generation. Nevertheless, current AEMWE is still criticized by large overpotentials and poor anti-reverse current capability of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The key challenge lies in tailoring adsorption evolution mechanism (AEM) to lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM), thereby circumventing the overpotential limitation caused by inherent scaling relationship. Here, we designed and fabricated a flexible CC-NCNTs-FeNi catalyst by integrating a hydrophobic carbon nanotube network with hydrophilic FeNi layered double hydroxides (LDH) on carbon cloth (CC), with the interface-induced formations of N-doped LDH and Fe/Ni single-atomic sites. Within lab-made AEMWE setups, the catalyst achieves unprecedented OER performance, rendering 100 mA cm −2 with an overpotential of 250 mV for 100 h. Meanwhile, interface-induced atom exchange endows the catalyst with catalytic multi-functionality, enabling a superior robustness for anti-reverse currents in on-off cycling. The in-situ characterizations and theoretical simulations collectively confirm that N-doping modulates Ni 3 d band center and enhances Ni-O covalency, thus favoring a transition from AEM to LOM-dominated pathway for OER.
