Pediatric bacterial pneumonia continues to pose a significant global health burden, often resulting in serious complications. Recent studies have emphasized the pivotal role of the gut-lung axis in the progression of respiratory diseases, wherein disruptions in gut microbiota can aggravate pulmonary inflammation. This research investigates the underlying mechanisms by which Ma-Xing-Shi-Gan Decoction (MXSG), a classical formula in traditional Chinese medicine, influences the gut-lung axis in the context of childhood bacterial pneumonia. Clinical data indicated pronounced alterations in intestinal microbial composition and a marked decline in short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) levels among affected pediatric patients—changes that coincided with dysfunctional gut-lung signaling. In a murine model of bacterial pneumonia, MXSG administration restored microbial diversity, elevated SCFA production, and attenuated inflammatory responses by suppressing the HDAC3/NF-κB signaling cascade. Key bioactive constituents of MXSG—namely, quercetin, osajin, nobiletin, and solasodine—were identified as critical regulators, modulating lipid metabolism and promoting SCFA biosynthesis. These results highlight the therapeutic promise of MXSG in reestablishing gut-lung homeostasis and shed light on its mechanistic potential in the treatment of pediatric bacterial pneumonia. Graphical This schematic illustrates how MXSG restores gut microbiota diversity and SCFA levels, suppresses HDAC3/NF-κB signaling, and alleviates lung inflammation in pediatric bacterial pneumonia. Integrated multi-omics and mouse model experiments reveal that MXSG modulates the gut-lung axis and provides a novel mechanism for its clinical efficacy.

Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, a traditional Chinese medicine also known as Gan Cao (GC), is frequently included in clinical prescriptions for the treatment of pneumonia. However, the pharmacological components of GC for pneumonia treatment are rarely explored. Gan An He Ji oral liquid (GAHJ) has a simple composition and contains GC liquid extracts and paregoric, and has been used clinically for many years. Therefore, GAHJ was selected as a compound preparation for the study of GC in the treatment of pneumonia. We conducted an in vivo study of patients with pneumonia undergoing GAHJ treatments for three days. Using the intelligent mass spectrometry data-processing technologies to analyze the metabolism of GC in vivo, we obtained 168 related components of GC in humans, consisting of 24 prototype components and 144 metabolites, with 135 compounds screened in plasma and 82 in urine. After analysis of the metabolic transformation relationship and relative exposure, six components (liquiritin, liquiritigenin, glycyrrhizin, glycyrrhetinic acid, daidzin, and formononetin) were selected as potential effective components. The experimental results based on two animal pneumonia models and the inflammatory cell model showed that the mixture of these six components was effective in the treatment of pneumonia and lung injury and could effectively downregulate the level of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). Interestingly, glycyrrhetinic acid exhibited the strongest inhibition on iNOS and the highest exposure in vivo. The following molecular dynamic simulations indicated a strong bond between glycyrrhetinic acid and iNOS. Thus, the current study provides a pharmaceutical basis for GC and reveals the possible corresponding mechanisms in pneumonia treatment.

The development of wavelength adjustable electrically driven panchromatic display light-emitting devices (LEDs), a future direction for lighting sources, still seems necessary because of great development prospects and practical significance. Herein, perovskite quantum dots (QDs) of CsPbBr 3 and CsPbI 3 with multi-color luminescence feature were employed into n-ZnO/p-GaN nano-heterojunction LEDs. A thin polystyrene cover layer was intentionally inserted between CsPbBr 3 and CsPbI 3 to prevent the undesired halogen anion-exchange reaction. A color-tunable electroluminescence (EL) could be achieved by changing the molar ratio of these two types of perovskite QDs. By further optimizing the molar ratio between CsPbBr 3 and CsPbI 3 , that is, the evolution of the share of red, green and blue-violet luminescence in EL spectra, a stable white light emission was obtained. The current research not only achieves multi-color EL emissions in a three-dimensional nano-architecture, but also proposes an effective and clever strategy for preparing and developing single-chip white LEDs.

The structure and morphology of gas-sensitive materials were extremely important to performances of gas sensor. In this work, ZnO nano-crystalline (ZnO NCs) was synthesized on foam-like GaN (F-GaN) by sol-gel method as gas-sensitive materials of H 2 S gas sensor. When ZnO NCs/F-GaN composite structure was used as gas- sensitive materials for detection of H 2 S with the concentration of 50 ppm at 220 °C. Importantly, rapid response and recovery time was 78 and 31 s, respectively. Enhancement of the sensing response was mainly attributed to the combination between ZnO NCs and F-GaN. In addition, a multiphase catalytic mechanism was proposed to description the catalytic role of F-GaN in the gas sensing procedure. These results further broadened the application of as-prepared metal oxide semiconductor based GaN in the gas sensing field.

Polarization-sensitive photodetectors are the core of optics applications and have been successfully demonstrated in photodetectors based on the newly-emerging metal-halide perovskites. However, achieving high polarization sensitivity is still extremely challenging. In addition, most of the previously reported photodetectors were concentrated on 1D lead-halide perovskites and 2D asymmetric intrinsic structure materials, but suffered from being external bias driven, lead-toxicity, poor stability and complex processes, severely limiting their practical applications. Here, we demonstrate a high-performance polarization-sensitive and stable polarization-sensitive UV photodetector based on a dendritic crystal lead-free metal-halide CsCu2I3/GaN heterostructure. By combining the anisotropic morphology and asymmetric intrinsic structure of CsCu2I3 dendrites with the isotropic material GaN film, a high specific surface area and built-in electric field are achieved, exhibiting an ultra-high polarization selectivity up to 28.7 and 102.8 under self-driving mode and −3 V bias, respectively. To our knowledge, such a high polarization selectivity has exceeded those of all of the reported perovskite-based devices, and is comparable to, or even superior to, those of the conventional 2D heterostructure materials. Interestingly, the unsealed device shows outstanding stability, and can be stored for over 2 months, and effectively maintained the performance even after repeated heating (373K)-cooling (300K) for different periods of time in ambient air, indicating a remarkable temperature tolerance and desired compatibility for applications under harsh conditions. Such excellent performance and simple method strongly show that the CsCu2I3/GaN heterojunction photodetector has great potential in practical applications with high polarization-sensitivity. This work provides a new insight into designing novel high-performance polarization-sensitive optoelectronic devices.

BACKGROUND Liver fibrosis is a common health problem worldwide and there is still a lack of effective medicines. The Chinese herbal medicine, Gan Shen Fu Fang (GSFF) is composed of salvianolic acid B and diammonium glycyrrhizinate. In this study, we observed the effects of GSFF on liver fibrosis in vivo and in vitro in an attempt to provide some hope for the treatment. AIM To observe the effects of GSFF on liver fibrosis in vivo and in vitro and investigate the mechanism from the perspective of the inflammatory response and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) phosphorylation. METHODS Common bile duct-ligated rats were used for in vivo experiments. Hepatic stellate cells-T6 (HSC-T6) cells were used for in vitro experiments. Hematoxylin and eosin staining and Masson staining, biochemical assays, hydroxyproline (Hyp) assays, enzyme-linked immunoasorbent assay and western blotting were performed to evaluate the degree of liver fibrosis, liver function, the inflammatory response and ERK phosphorylation. The CCK8 assay, immunofluorescence and western blotting were applied to test the effect of GSFF on HSC-T6 cell activation and determine whether GSFF had an effect on ERK phosphorylation in HSC-T6 cells. RESULTS GSFF improved liver function and inhibited liver fibrosis in common bile duct-ligated rats after 3 wk of treatment, as demonstrated by histological changes, hydroxyproline assays and collagen I concentrations. GSFF alleviated inflammatory cell infiltration and reduced the synthesis of pro-inflammatory cytokines [tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interlukin-1β] and NF-κB. In addition, GSFF decreased ERK phosphorylation. In vitro , GSFF inhibited the viability of HSC-T6 cells with and without transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) stimulation and decreased the synthesis of collagen I. GSFF had the greatest effect at a concentration of 0.5 μmol/L. GSFF inhibited the expression of α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), a marker of HSC activation, in HSC-T6 cells. Consistent with the in vivo results, GSFF also inhibited the phosphorylation of ERK and downregulated the expression of NF-κB. CONCLUSION GSFF inhibited liver fibrosis progression in vivo and HSC-T6 cell activation in vitro . These effects may be related to an alleviated inflammatory response and downregulated ERK phosphorylation.

Heterojunction phototransistor (HPT) is considered the most promising detector technology in weak ultraviolet (UV) signal detection due to its inherent internal gain through transistor action. However, achieving high-performance self-powered UV HPTs remains a significant challenge. In this study, a high-performance self-powered p + -GaN/n − -ZnO/Au UV HPT with ZnO serving as the floating base is cleverly designed. The device features a unique back-to-back configuration of the p + -GaN/n − -ZnO heterojunction and n − -ZnO/Au Schottky junction, along with an ultrathin ZnO base layer of a 3D nanowire network structure. This design enables the fabricated p + -GaN/n − -ZnO/Au UV HPT to operate in a self-powered mode with exceptional performance metrics. Under zero bias, the device exhibits outstanding characteristics including ultralow dark current of 1.7 × 10 −13 A, remarkable I photo /I dark ratio of 10 6 , fast response speed (t r = 150 µs / t f = 250 µs), high responsivity of 9.74 A W −1 , and detectivity of 1.58 × 10 14 Jones, representing the best result achieved for UV HPTs thus far at zero bias. Moreover, the fabricated UV HPT is successfully demonstrated in solar-blind imaging and UV communication systems without the need for an external power supply. This work presents effective and practical design strategies for achieving high-performance self-powered UV HPTs.

The utilization of photocatalysis for the simultaneous production of valuable fine chemicals and fuels from biomass-derived feedstocks holds significant promise; however, its practical implementation remains constrained. In this study, we present the development of an Fe-doped gallium nitride (GaN) catalyst treated by calcination (Fe@GaN-X) for the selectively conversion of biomass-based monosaccharides and xylan into lactic acid and carbon monoxide (CO). Fe@GaN-400 exhibited broader visible light absorption, lower resistance, and reduced photoluminescence intensity in comparison to pristine GaN, thereby affording exceptional photocatalytic activity (lactic acid yield: 71.38%; CO evolution rate: 385.74 μmol g −1 h −1 ). When monosaccharides and xylan were used as substrates, the Fe@GaN-400 system demonstrated outstanding photocatalytic activity, particularly in the case of xylan system (CO evolution rate = 923.21 μmol g −1 h −1 ). Additionally, the experimental results revealed the generation of distinctive reactive species, encompassing holes (h + ), superoxide anion (·O 2 - ), hydroxyl radical (·OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) within this catalytic system. Remarkably, the ·O 2 - and h + exhibit heightened selectivity towards CO and lactic acid, respectively. This work establishes a novel pathway for the co-production of fine chemicals and fuels through the photocatalytic conversion of biomass.

In this study, comprehensive and systematic nontargeted metabolomics analysis was performed with the metabolites of Zangju peel ( Citrus reticulata cv. Manau Gan, CRZP, which has been cultivated for over 400 years in Derong County, China.) at four different mature stages. A total of 1878 metabolites were identified, among which flavonoids were the most abundant (62.04 %), and identified 62 key differential metabolites significantly affected by maturity. Based on biological activity measurements, CRZP showed better antioxidant activity, lipase inhibition ability, inhibition of adipogenic differentiation in 3TT-L1 cells and promotion of lipid metabolism, with the biological activity of CRZP at different maturity stages being associated with key differential metabolite. Thus, CRZP is natural antioxidants and possess anti-obesity potential, and industrial production needs to consider the Maturity stage of its collection.

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has become a huge threaten to global health, which raise urgent demand of developing efficient therapeutic strategy. The aim of the present study is to dissect the chemical composition and the pharmacological mechanism of Qingfei Paidu Decoction (QFPD), a clinically used Chinese medicine for treating COVID-19 patients in China. Through comprehensive analysis by liquid chromatography coupled with high resolution mass spectrometry (MS), a total of 129 compounds of QFPD were putatively identified. We also constructed molecular networking of mass spectrometry data to classify these compounds into 14 main clusters, in which exhibited specific patterns of flavonoids (45 %), glycosides (15 %), carboxylic acids (10 %), and saponins (5 %). The target network model of QFPD, established by predicting and collecting the targets of identified compounds, indicated a pivotal role of Ma Xing Shi Gan Decoction (MXSG) in the therapeutic efficacy of QFPD. Supportively, through transcriptomic analysis of gene expression after MXSG administration in rat model of LPS-induced pneumonia, the thrombin and Toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling pathway were suggested to be essential pathways for MXSG mediated anti-inflammatory effects. Besides, changes in content of major compounds in MXSG during decoction were found by the chemical analysis. We also validate that one major compound in MXSG, i.e. glycyrrhizic acid, inhibited TLR agonists induced IL-6 production in macrophage. In conclusion, the integration of in silico and experimental results indicated that the therapeutic effects of QFPD against COVID-19 may be attributed to the anti-inflammatory effects of MXSG, which supports the rationality of the compatibility of TCM.

Wide-bandgap copper halide semiconductors hold significant potential for next-generation ultraviolet optoelectronics due to their remarkable photophysical properties. However, defects in polycrystalline films, such as point/interfacial defects and grain boundaries, create pathways for moisture and ion diffusion, thereby compromising device performance and stability. Herein, the capillary epitaxy growth of CsCu 2 I 3 single-crystal films (SCFs) is demonstrated with a bandgap of 3.68 eV on GaN, by leveraging capillary forces to guide the transport of the molten precursor and using lattice-matching substrates to achieve crystallographic alignments. This strategy suppresses random nucleation and produces CsCu 2 I 3 SCFs with high crystallinity (rocking curve FWHM = 0.286°). The critical role of lattice matching is further underscored by contrasting the polycrystalline CsCu 2 I 3 or Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 films grown on lattice-mismatched substrates, as well as by the impressive open-circuit voltage of 1.08 V achieved in the CsCu 2 I 3 SCF/GaN heterojunction. The CsCu 2 I 3 SCF/GaN ultraviolet photodetectors demonstrate nW-level detection limit (≈2.81 nW) and self-powered operation, combining the 24 nm narrowband bandwidth with dual-mode (voltage/current) signal outputs for interference-resistant detection and communication. The work not only establishes the first route for the epitaxial growth of copper halide SCFs but also paves the way for the hetero-integration of perovskites onto mature semiconductor platforms for ultraviolet optoelectronics.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) threatens elderly human health and still lacks effective treatment. Our previous work showed that LGZGD possessed a neuroprotective effect on the Aβ 25-35 -induced neurotoxicity in differentiated PC12 cells, indicating that LGZGD may be a potential drug for treatment of AD. However, its pharmacodynamic substances which show anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant stress activities are still unrevealed. This research aims to reveal the pharmacodynamic substances of LGZGD on Aβ 25-35 -induced PC12 cell model of AD based on a spectrum-effect relationship study by using HPLC-FT-ICR-MS method and multivariate statistical analysis. Firstly, the chemical composition spectra of different combinations of LGZGD were recorded by HPLC-FT-ICR MS. Subsequently, Aβ 25-35 -induced PC12 cell model of AD was established and pharmacodynamic experiments were conducted to evaluate their anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activities, respectively. Finally, the potential pharmacodynamic substances were screened out through spectrum-effect relationship study accompanied by multivariate statistical analysis including bivariate correlation analysis (BCA), grey relational analysis (GRA), principal component analysis (PCA), partial least squares regression analysis (PLSR). As a result, a total of 96 chemical consistents in different combinations of LGZGD were discovered. Among them, 7 components such as isoglabrolide, licorice saponin E2, licorice saponin N2 and licoisoflavanone were directly linked with the anti-inflammatory effects, and 14 constituents such as tumulosic acid, polyporenic acid C, dehydrotumulosic acid, dehydropachymic acid, and pachymic acid were directly correlated with the anti-oxidative stress activities. In conclusion, we combined the HPLC-FT-ICR-MS spectra with pharmacodynamic indicators to develop the spectrum-effect relationships of LGZGD for the first time, and successfully revealed its potential pharmacodynamic substances in the treatment of AD from the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant pathways in the cell model.
