Nano architectured halloysite nanotubes enable advanced composite separator for safe lithium metal batteries

Wei Wang,Anthony Chun Yin Yuen,Yao Yuan,Can Liao,Ao Li,Imrana I. Kabir,Yongchun Kan,Yuan Hu,Guan Heng Yeoh

Lithium metal anode has attracted wide attention due to the highest theoretical specific capacity, the lowest anode potential, and low gravimetric density. Nevertheless, the uncontrollable growth of lithium dendrites during the cycling process may pierce through polymer separator and induce safety concerns extremely restricting the further application. In this work, nano architectured halloysite nanotubes (NHNTs) are employed to fabricate high performance poly (vinyl alcohol) composite separator (OPVA/NHNTs separator) that can effectively enhance the electrochemical performance and safety of lithium metal batteries. The results indicate that, compared to Celgard and control OPVA separators, OPVA/NHNTs separator exhibits both high Young's modulus and ion conductivity, which can efficiently retard the growth of lithium dendrites and maintain the electrochemical properties. Additionally, from the comparison between OPVA/HNTs OPVA/NHNTs separator, it can be revealed that in contrast to Monroe-Newman theory, composite separator with only high Young's modulus can hardly retard the growth of lithium dendrites, as high ion conductivity also plays a crucial role in promoting the even distribution of lithium ions, which can effectively suppress the germination of lithium whiskers. This work verifies the importance of nanomaterials in suppressing lithium dendrites and provides a new idea to employ nano science to design and fabricate high-performance polymer composite separators that can meet the electrochemical performance and safety performance of lithium metal batteries.

Synthesis of robust and self-healing polyurethane/halloysite coating via in-situ polymerization

Lin Changhong,Ying Puyou,Huang Min,Zhang Ping,Yang Tao,Liu Gang,Wang Tianle,Wu Jianbo,Levchenko Vladimir

Due to the outstanding properties comprised of thermal, anti-corrosion and excellent processing properties, the polyurethane coating has received attention from many researchers. However, absence of self-healing capacity limited their applications. In the present work, a self-healing polyurethane (PU) was developed for protective coating via Diels–Alder reaction. Moreover, incorporation of Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) by in situ polymerization method in the PU enhances the mechanical properties. The macro- and micro-mechanical properties of materials were investigated by tensile and nanoindentation measurement, these results show the composites displayed higher tensile strength (34.2 MPa) and hardness (5.13 MPa) in comparison with pure PU (22.9 MPa and 4.24 MPa). The tensile and POM results indicated that the PU and composites have excellent self-healing property. The simulative salt spray tests indicated the coating possessed an excellent corrosion protection property. Therefore, this work is promising for the self-healing ability protective polymer coating.

Pheromone enclosed in halloysite with n-octadecane releases rhythmically under simulated diurnal temperature

Xing Li,Ya Wen,Yulian Zhang,Zhiqiang Ge

Insect pheromone is a class of natural non-toxic and harmless biological pesticide. To improve the utilization efficiency of the pheromone pesticides, controlled release in response to circadian rhythm of insects is a feasible approach because some insects act and release pheromones with a circadian rhythm. Thus, myrcene, as the insect pheromone model, was first loaded into the hollow nano-cavity of halloysite nanotubes (Hal), which were further enclosed with melted n-octadecane as a coating to form a composite (PMHal). The latter was simply blended into chitosan solution to cast a chitosan composite film (PMHal@CS) for preventing n-octadecane leakage during the phase change process . The effects of temperature change on the release rate of myrcene from the composite film were evaluated. Results showed the combination of Hal with n-octadecane could significantly slow the release rate of myrcene from the composite film when the ambient temperature was below 15 °C. If the ambient temperature was near to the melting point of n-octadecane, the release rate of myrcene would be enhanced. In alternating temperature cycles test of PMHal@CS film, the average release rate of myrcene was 0.65 μg/h at 30 °C and 0.022 μg/h at 15 °C, the persistent temperature sensitivity and good temperature rhythm were still remained after 7 cycles. These results suggested that the composite film had a good controlled release effect on myrcene and could adapt well to the circadian rhythm activity of some insects.

Preparation of functionalized halloysite reinforced polyimide composite aerogels with excellent thermal insulation properties

Fuxing Zhao,Jundong Zhu,Tangping Peng,Hao Liu,Shengzhuo Ge,Huasheng Xie,Le Xie,Chongwen Jiang

Excellent thermal insulating aerogels have broad application prospects in pipeline transportation, aerospace, construction and other fields. However, defects in thermal stability and mechanical are the main factors limiting their use to special environments. In this work, a novel polyimide composite aerogel is successfully synthesized through 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) functionalized clay halloysite nanotubes (FHal) as inorganic enhancement phase and uniformly embedded in polyimide (PI) aerogels. Functionalization can increase the interfacial compatibility between clay inorganic phase and polyimide acid. The results indicated that FHal with high aspect ratio interacts with PI to form a three-dimensional network structure. The FHal/PI composite aerogels had low shrinkage (21.9%–30.79%), low bulk densities (65.285–71.464 mg/cm 3 ), low thermal conductivities (39.18–42.57 mW/(m·K)), high thermal stability (onset of decomposition above 520 °C) and excellent mechanical property (1.14 MPa, 2.62 times of pure PI aerogel). Therefore, FHal/PI composite aerogels can be used as a promising thermal management material for practical and complex insulation applications.

Injectable halloysite-g-chitosan hydrogels as drug carriers to inhibit breast cancer recurrence

Riwang Li,Yuhui Zhang,Zhen Lin,Qiqi Lei,Yi Liu,Xinyang Li,Mingxian Liu,Gang Wu,Simin Luo,Huajun Wang,Xiaofei Zheng,Lihua Li,Ningjian Ao,Zhengang Zha

Breast cancer is one of the frequently occurring malignant tumors in the world. Breast resection, high tumor recurrence rate and high dose chemotherapy cause great pain to patients. Is there a way to prevent tumor recurrence efficiently while promoting new tissue generation after tumor resection? Based on this, an injectable biocompatible thiolated chitosan (CSSH) hydrogel with pH-response was designed to be used for accurate treatment of tumor cells in the initial stage of tissue resection and for tissue reconstruction later. To improve the mechanical strength of hydrogels, reduce the toxic and side effects, and delay the release of doxorubicin (DOX), halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were modified to obtain thiolated HNTs (HNTs-SH), then loaded DOX ( [email protected] ), and further cross-linked CSSH to form [email protected] /HNTs-SH Gel. The results showed that HNTs-SH can be evenly dispersed in the gel matrix, which improve the compressive strength of the hydrogels. In vitro DOX release experiments showed that the hydrogels were pH sensitive, DOX released slowly at normal physiological pH, but released quickly in the acidic microenvironment of tumors. Cell experiments showed that [email protected] /HNTs-SH Gel released DOX can be taken up by MCF-7, thereby effectively inhibited its growth. In vivo recurrence experiments showed that the carriers can reduce the toxic and side effects of DOX, and effectively inhibited the recurrence and repair the defect tissue after tumor resection. Therefore, the drug-loaded gel is expected to be used as a carrier for local accurate and effective drug release, especially for inhibiting recurrence and repairing defective tissues after tumor resection.

Superhydrophobic and ethylene scavenging paper doped with halloysite nanotubes for food packaging applications

Fuyou Yu,Kun Wang,Hui Li,Lincai Peng

Paper-based food packaging materials have gained great interests along with increasing environmental concern and fossil energy crisis. Inspired by strong adhesion of marine mussels, we proposed a simple and facile method to prepare a durable paper-based packaging material in combination of superhydrophobicity and ethylene scavenging capability, which is first surface decoration of polydopamine (PDA) on paper surface followed by immersion into mixture solution containing halloysite nanotubes (HNTs), polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and stearic acid (SA). The PDMS/SA/HNTs@PDA-coated paper with a WCA of 157.5° exhibited excellent anti-fouling, self-cleaning and potential application in liquid food packaging. The obtained functional paper not only presented improved mechanical, barrier properties and outstanding anti-bacterial adhesion, but also could effectively extend shelf-life of cherry tomatoes under ambient conditions. After suffering from various rigorous treatments, the resultant multifunctional paper still exhibited excellent superhydrophobic durability. This study provided a new insight into fabrication of multifunctional paper-based materials for food packaging applications.

Carbon coated halloysite nanotubes as efficient sulfur host materials for lithium sulfur batteries

Yunyan Wang,Xinbao Wang,Hongqi Ye,Kai Han

To impede the shuttle effect of lithium sulfur (Li S) batteries and improve the battery performance, carbon coated halloysite nanotubes (HNT@C) composites were synthesized and applied as sulfur host materials for Li S batteries. The unique one-dimensional tubular structure and abundant alumina-silicates components of HNT clay were synergistically utilized to physically confine and chemically adsorb lithium polysulfides , which could play important role to suppress the shuttle effect of polysulfides. Moreover, to solve the insulating issue of HNT, conducting carbon was deposited on the surface of HNT through polydopamine (PDA) coating and pyrolysis . The electrical conductivity of HNT@C host was thus significantly enhanced. As a result, the cycling stability and rate capability of the sulfur cathode were improved. In addition, the effect of carbon content on the properties of HNT@C composites and the electrochemical performance of the sulfur cathode were investigated. With carbon content of 3%, HNT@C hosted sulfur cathode delivered an initial discharge capacity of 922.7 mAh g −1 at current rate of 0.1C. Also, the capacity still retained about 82% after 500 cycles at 1C and the corresponding capacity decay is as low as 0.036% per cycle. This work can not only extend the application of HNT clay in energy storage but also provide a low-cost and promising HNT@C host material for advanced Li S batteries.

Multidimensional synergistic design of Co/halloysite/graphene oxide composites for broadband electromagnetic wave absorption

Yi Wang,Pei Liu,Zhen Ding,Shuai Yin,Zhiqiang Li,Zhanpeng Liu,Fenghua Liu

To address the problem of narrow bandwidth in conventional electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials, which severely limits their practical applications. We proposed an integrated strategy that combined microstructural regulation of multi-dimensional composites with macroscopic structural design. A ternary Co/HNTs/GO composite was fabricated, in which one-dimensional halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) acted as a lightweight framework, two-dimensional graphene oxide (GO) established a conductive network, and Co nanoparticles introduced magnetic loss. This multi-dimensional synergistic architecture enhanced interfacial polarization, conductive pathways, and magnetic loss. After calcination optimization, the composite achieved a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −57.52 dB with an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.02 GHz. Moreover, the absorption frequency was tuned across 4–18 GHz by varying the sample thickness from 2 to 5 mm. In addition, a step-pyramid structure optimized by electromagnetic simulation further expanded the EAB to 12.4 GHz (5.6–18 GHz), fully covering the X and Ku bands. This integrated material-structure strategy provided a promising paradigm for the rational design of broadband and high-performance EMW absorbers.

Remarkable enhancement of corrosion resistance of silica coating with acidified halloysite on Mg Alloy

Song Xu,Yan Gao,Ling Zhao,Huaijie Cao,Junxi Zhang

Solely inorganic silica (SiO 2 ) coating cannot provide long-term corrosion protection on metal due to structural defects. Herein, acidified Halloysite (Hal) was proposed and the Hal tubes were incorporated into SiO 2 sol coating for enhancing corrosion resistance on AZ31B magnesium (Mg) alloy. SiO 2 sol originated from the hydrolysis of water glass (Sodium silicate). With improved interaction between Hal and SiO 2 , the cracks and structural defects in cured SiO 2 coating can be reduced. As a result, the impedance modulus at 0.01 Hz (|Z| 0.01 Hz ) of the acidified Hal/SiO 2 composite coating (AG coating) increased to 10 9 Ω·cm 2 , outperforming 2 orders of magnitude higher than pure SiO 2 coating (pure coating) counterpart. The corrosion current density decreased to 9.33×10 –12 A·cm -2 . Besides, the AG coating offered stable corrosion resistance after immersion tests for 30 days, which was comparable to anti-corrosive polymer coating. The release of amorphous SiO 2 from acidified Hal reduced the internal stress. The H + on Hal induced a decrease of pH and adsorption of residual Na + , thereby improving structural integrity and water resistance of SiO 2 coating. Differing from other fillers (CNTs, graphene, MXene), this work proposed a low-cost Hal tube as filler for designing inorganic coating for corrosion protection on Mg alloy. It also shed insight into understanding the underlying corrosion protection mechanism of inorganic SiO 2 coating on metal.

Catalytically active silver nanoparticles loaded in the lumen of halloysite nanotubes via electrostatic interactions

Zeng Xiaoping,Wang Qin,Wang Hong,Yang Yajiang

Halloysites are a kind of aluminosilicate clay with a morphology of a nanotube. The inner wall of halloysite is positively charged, and the external surface is negatively charged. In this work, we propose a simple and facile method to prepare Ag NPs loaded in the lumen of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs). Herein, N -acetyl- l -cysteine modified silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) with negative charges spontaneously and stably resided in the lumen of HNTs via electrostatic interactions. The images of transmission electron microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy showed that Ag NPs with a size of ~2.6 nm were uniformly distributed in the lumen of HNTs. The catalytic activity of the obtained Ag NPs/HNTs composites was evaluated by the reduction reaction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) as a model reaction. When the molar ratio of Ag and 4-NP was set at 0.008, the rate constant of the reaction was found to be 0.91 min −1 , two times higher than that of Ag NPs adsorbed on the external surface of HNTs. Additionally, no Ag NPs were found in the supernatant after the Ag NPs/HNTs suspension was stirred for 30 min. Such structural stability implies good reusability as a catalyst.

Characterization of electrospinned halloysite-curcumin active nanofiber films and its application in food preservation

Wen-jing Huang,Wen-hao Dai,Eric Oscar Amonsou,Guo-qin Yao,Yan-yu Liu,Jian-hong Zhang,Wei-ping Jin,Wang-yang Shen,Zhong-ze Hu,Zhan Wang,Meng Zhang,Qing-le Liang

Traditional food packaging materials are characterized by short preservation periods and inadequate mechanical properties. In this study, curcumin-loaded halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) were incorporated into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and active nanofiber films were fabricated via electrospinning. The encapsulation efficiency of curcumin-HNT composite at a 1:1 mass ratio was 13.8 ± 0.2%, with a drug loading capacity of 14.5 ± 0.2%. XRD analysis revealed a characteristic halloysite nanotube peak at 24.55°, while FTIR spectra confirmed successful incorporation through weakened bands in the 1510–1282 cm −1 region. HNT incorporation enhanced curcumin thermal stability, increasing its decomposition temperature from 730 °C to 800 °C due to nanotubular confinement and structural interactions. The nanofiber films exhibited improved tensile strength, high moisture absorption (∼181%), and effective moisture-barrier properties. Further, the films demonstrated antioxidant, antibacterial, and pH-responsive colorimetric functions. Application studies on baked goods and fresh fruits showed improved water retention and frost resistance, reducing storage-related quality deterioration.

Nanocomposite of halloysite nanotubes/multi-walled carbon nanotubes for methyl parathion electrochemical sensor application

Hongyuan Zhao,Huina Ma,Xiaoguang Li,Binbin Liu,Runqiang Liu,Sridhar Komarneni

We report a simple and highly efficient preparation of nanocomposite of halloysite (Hal) nanotubes/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Hal-MWCNTs) and its electrochemical sensor application for the determination of methyl parathion (MP). The phase structure and surface morphology of the Hal-MWCNTs nanocomposite were confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra. According to the electrochemical tests, the fabricated glassy carbon electrode (GCE) sensor with Hal and multi-walled carbon nanotubes showed excellent MP determination performance because of the synergistic effect of Hal and multi-walled carbon nanotubes . The Hal-MWCNTs/GCE sensor exhibited a relatively low detection limit of 0.034 μM in the linear range of 0.5–11 μM. When used for the determination of MP in real samples, the Hal-MWCNTs/GCE sensor showed good detection effect with satisfactory relative standard deviation (RSD) of 2.46 to 3.08% and recoveries of 98.8 of 101.8%. This work indicated that the nanocomposite of Hal-MWCNTs when coated on GCE is useful for the fabrication of high-performance MP electrochemical sensor.
