A fluorescence probe-smartphone-machine learning integrated platform for the visual and intelligent detection of imidacloprid in agricultural products

Zheng Cheng,Xinfang Liu,Rongfang Li,Xu Liu,Xiaoyu Zhang,Xun Feng,Lijuan Zhou

Imidacloprid is a pesticide commonly used in agriculture production. Portable and accurate detection of imidacloprid residues is of great significance to food safety and human health. Herein, a red-emitting rare earth complex (Eu-IMDC) probe is prepared, which features low detection limit (75 nM), high selectivity and fast response speed (30 s) for imidacloprid detection. The detection mechanism is investigated through experiments and theoretical calculations. In addition, an intelligent detection platform integrating the fluorescence probe, smartphone and a feedforward neural network (FNN) model is constructed and applied to imidacloprid detection in real rice, millet, and ginger samples, achieving recovery rates range from 96.78 % to 104.77 % and relative standard deviation (RSD) values below than 3.83 %. Meanwhile, relevant parameters, such as the coefficient of determination (R 2 ), root mean square error (RMSE) and residual prediction deviation (RPD) values, indicating excellent fitting and predictive performance of the FNN model. This work offers a rapid, portable, and intelligent sensing platform for pesticide residues in agricultural products.

The Impact of Imidacloprid in Dietary Residues on Intestinal Damage and the Increased Risk of Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli Infection

Xinlei Yuan,Zihan Wang,Fang Wu,Le Cheng,Yutong Jin,Jianguo Dong,Chenyan Zheng,Yumeng Ma,Yan Jin,Bing Fang

Pesticide residues in foods can disturb the intestinal barrier and microbiota, even at a very low dose; however, studies on direct consequences on intestinal health are still lacking. Here, we evaluated the damage of imidacloprid (IMI) to the intestine and the resulting defense against enterotoxigenicEscherichia coli(ETEC) in C57BL/6J mice. After 8-week exposure to 0.06 mg /kg bodyweight/day, IMI significantly damaged intestinal structure and intestinal integrity, characterized by an increased permeability to FITC-dextran and decreased mRNA expression of tight junction proteins, as well as more broken villi and lower proportions of goblet cells and paneth cells. These were related to the suppression of the self-renewal of intestinal stem cells (ISCs), as evidenced by significantly decreased Sox9+ ISCs and increased apoptosis. Furthermore, the impaired intestinal integrity in mice exposed to low doses of IMI directly increased the susceptibility to ETEC infection and even caused death. On the other hand, exposure to 0.6 mg IMI/kg bodyweight/day lead to significantly increased contents of IL-1β and TNFα both in the intestine and serum, and significantly decreased Th1 cell and IFN-γ contents in the lamina propria during the ETEC infection. Our study suggested that the intestinal damage induced by pesticide residues would significantly decrease the defense ability of the intestine, which suggests a novel perspective when evaluating the long-term effects of food contaminates on intestinal health at low doses without significant toxicological injuries.

Imidacloprid induces abnormal glucose metabolism through NF-κB-mediated apoptosis of pancreatic β cells based on population exposure levels

Zhongyuan Zhang,Jiaming Fu,Yihong Di,Honghui Li,Bing Wu,Xueyan Tian,Meiyan Li,Yuqing Dai,Zhuoheng Shen,Jinhao Jia,Zeyang Bai,Limeng Xiong,Yuhan Zhang,Xiaoyu Li,Yi Zhao,Hao Hu,GuangJun Wang,Huifang Yang,Rui Zhang,Jian Sun

Previous epidemiologic studies have indicated a positive association between population-based imidacloprid (IMI) exposure and diabetes. Moreover, toxicological evidence suggests that IMI can disrupt glucose metabolism in non-target organisms. However, the toxic doses of IMI in previous experimental studies were much higher than the exposure levels in the real world, and the underlying mechanism remains unknown. In this study, based on the exposure level of neonicotinoids in humans, we investigated the possible mechanism of IMI-induced glucose metabolism disorders using cybertoxicology predictions, a long-term exposure model of IMI in mice, and cellular models. The cybertoxicology predictions showed that NF-κB and apoptosis play key roles in the association of IMI, pancreatic β-cell injury, and diabetes. However, exposure of mice to IMI through potable water (104 μg/kg, population exposure maximum) for 24 weeks did not result in abnormal glucose metabolism (P > 0.05), while significant activation of inflammatory response, NF-κB phosphorylation, and mitochondrial apoptosis pathways were observed (P < 0.05). After inhibition of NF-κB P65 phosphorylation in the cellular model, IMI-induced alterations in the MIN6 cell structure and function, inflammatory responses, and mitochondrial apoptotic pathways were alleviated (P < 0.05). This finding provides evidence for the disruption of glucose metabolism due to long-term exposure to IMI, and subsequent studies should focus on the effects of longer exposure to IMI on glucose metabolism as well as the role of the NF-κB signaling pathway.

Ultrasensitive detection of imidacloprid in fruits and vegetables using a lateral flow immunoassay based on highly luminescent Au nanoclusters

Chai Weina,Cao Ziyue,Tan Haoyuan,He Xiao,Dong Jiangxue,Yan Hongyuan,Su Ming

In this work, a highly sensitive lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) strip based on luminescent green-emitting gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) was developed for ultrasensitive and facile visual determination of imidacloprid (ICP). Specifically, the structurally ordered AuNCs system, constructed through 6-aza-2-thiothymine (ATT) as the coordinating ligand and L-arginine (Arg) as the guest molecule (denoted as Arg/ATT/AuNCs), exhibited enhanced and persistent fluorescent emission characteristics. Furthermore, the presence of unbound carboxyl moieties on the Arg/ATT/AuNCs complex facilitated the conjugation with biomolecules, thereby providing a functional indicator for the biosensor assembly. The developed strips operate on the principle of an indirect competitive assay and are capable of effectively detecting target samples in less than 12 min. Moreover, the sample only needs to undergo simple crushing and filtration. The assay provides qualitative results through visual inspection under a UV lamp and quantitative analysis via a portable fluorescence reader. The visual limit of detection (vLOD) was 7.5 ng/mL and the limit of detection (LOD) is 0.026 ng/mL. Additionally, the average recoveries of ICP from apples, oranges, cucumbers, and cabbages samples ranged from 78.0% to 104.8%, 82.0% to 99.1%, 94.0% to 99.1%, and 93.0% to 101.9%, respectively, with relative standard deviations less than 10%. Given its ultrasensitive luminescence performance, the AuNCs-LFIA strip offers great potential for rapid, sensitive, and cost-effective detection of analytes in food safety monitoring. Graphical

Plasma-activated water as a potential synergist to enhance the insecticidal activity of imidacloprid and flonicamid against cotton aphids

Cui Xu,Jinming Han,Xuewei Chen,Junxia Feng,Hangbo Xu,Dongjie Cui,Zhongyuan Deng,Lixiang Wang,Ruonan Ma,Zhen Jiao,Xianchun Li

BACKGROUND Over-reliance on and excessive use of pesticides for pest management have led to various side effects, including the rapid development of pesticide resistance. The abundant reactive species present in plasma-activated water (PAW) make it a potential alternative to pesticides for controlling crop pests. Whether PAW can truly replace pesticides or significantly reduce their usage depends on its efficacy when applied in the same manner as pesticides. RESULTS A foliar spray bioassay that simulates the field application of pesticides was established to estimate the direct toxicity of PAW to two insecticide-susceptible and two resistant strains of cotton aphids in the presence and absence of imidacloprid or flonicamid. Spraying PAW alone only caused mortality of about 20–30% against the four cotton aphid strains, significantly lower than the effects of imidacloprid LC 25 dose and flonicamid LC 25 dose to the four strains. Spraying a mixture of PAW and imidacloprid at LC 25 dose or flonicamid at LC 25 dose resulted in significantly higher mortality rates against the four strains compared to the two insecticides diluted with pure water. Relative to pure water control, PAW and its mixtures with imidacloprid LC 25 dose or flonicamid LC 25 dose displayed no adverse effects on chlorophyll content and the photosynthetic parameters of cotton seedlings. CONCLUSION The data obtained indicate that PAW has the potential to serve as a plant-safe synergist for enhancing the insecticidal efficacy of imidacloprid and flonicamid against both insecticide-susceptible and -resistant cotton aphids. © 2026 Society of Chemical Industry.

Efficient degradation of imidacloprid in wastewater by a novel p-n heterogeneous Ag2O/BiVO4/diatomite composite under hydrogen peroxide

Jing Chen,Qifang Ren,Chunshan Xu,Bin Chen,Shaohua Chen,Yi Ding,Zhen Jin,Wanmi Guo,Xinyu Jia

In this study, Ag 2 O/BiVO 4 /diatomite composite with p-n heterojunction structure was synthesized by simple hydrothermal method with diatomite as carrier. It was found that under the action of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), the imidacloprid (IMD) could be effectively degraded by the composite. Systemic evaluations was conducted on effects of pH value, catalyst dosage, H 2 O 2 concentration, initial IMD concentration, and anion on how effeciently this new photocatalytic composite can degrade IMD. The results show that the p-n heterojunction formed between the two contact surfaces of Ag 2 O nanoparticle and BiVO 4 promotes the charge transfer between the interfaces, inhibits recombination of electrons and holes, and thus significantly improves the catalytic performance. The stability and reusability of Ag 2 O/BiVO 4 /diatomite composites were tested with ICP experiment and cyclic experiment. Active substance capture experiment and ESR reveal the photocatalytic reaction mechanism and confirm that superoxide radical ( O 2 − ), hydroxyl radical ( OH), and h + can promote the degradation of IMD. The degradation products and the intermediates of IMD were identified through LC-MS, on a basis of which the possible transformation pathway was proposed. In situ synthesis of p-type Ag 2 O and n-type BiVO 4 heterojunction composites has opened a new direction for photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants.

Oxidative stress and gene expression induced by biodegradable microplastics and imidacloprid in earthworms (Eisenia fetida) at environmentally relevant concentrations

Baikerouzi Baihetiyaer,Nan Jiang,Xianxu Li,Bo He,Jun Wang,Xiaoteng Fan,Huimin Sun,Xianqiang Yin

The environmental issues caused by biodegradable microplastics (BMPs) from polylactic acid (PLA) as well as pesticides are of increasing concern nowadays. In this study, the toxicological effects of the single and combined exposure of PLA BMPs and imidacloprid (IMI), a neonicotinoid insecticide, on earthworms ( Eisenia fetida ) were investigated in terms of oxidative stress , DNA damage, and gene expression, respectively. The results showed that compared with the control, SOD, CAT and AChE activities in the single and combined treatments decreased significantly, and POD activity showed an “inhibition-activation” trend. SOD and CAT activities of combined treatments on day 28 and AChE activity of combined treatment on day 21 were significantly higher than those of the single treatments. For the rest of the exposure period, SOD, CAT and AChE activities in the combined treatments were lower than those in the single treatments. POD activity in the combined treatment was significantly lower than those of single treatments at day 7 and higher than that of single treatments at day 28. MDA content showed an “inhibition-activation-inhibition” trend, and the ROS level and 8-OHdG content increased significantly in both the single and combined treatments. This shows that both single and combined treatments led to oxidative stress and DNA damage. ANN and HSP70 were expressed abnormally, while the SOD and CAT mRNA expression changes were generally consistent with the corresponding enzyme activities . The integrated biomarker response (IBR) values were higher under combined exposures than single exposures at both biochemical and molecular levels, indicating that combined treatment exacerbated the toxicity. However, the IBR value of the combined treatment decreased consistently at the time axis. Overall, our results suggest that PLA BMPs and IMI induce oxidative stress and gene expression in earthworms at environmentally relevant concentrations, thereby increasing the risk of earthworms.

Effects of dissolved black carbon bound with goethite on physicochemical properties and adsorption capacity for imidacloprid: Adsorption versus coprecipitation

Zhang Peng,Ma Mingming,Meng Xingying,Shao Yifei,Liu Aiju

Dissolved black carbon (DBC) is an important component of natural dissolved organic matter and can bind to iron minerals to form DBC-mineral complexes by adsorption and coprecipitation. However, reports regarding the difference in physicochemical properties between adsorbed and coprecipitated DBC-mineral complexes and their sorption capacity for polar organic pollutants are limited. Herein, goethite (Gt) and the adsorbed and coprecipitated complexes of DBC with Gt (SGt-DBC and CGt-DBC) were prepared, and their physicochemical properties and adsorption capacity for polar imidacloprid (IMI) were determined. The results showed that DBC could efficiently bind to Gt by coprecipitation or adsorption, leading to the aggregation of Gt particles, decreasing SSA, and increasing microporous volume, O-containing functional groups and negative charges. A greater effect was observed in CGt-DBC samples than SGt-DBC samples. CGt-DBC samples could more efficiently adsorb IMI than SGt-DBC samples, and CGt-DBC samples obtained the greatest Qmax with 68.4 mg/kg. The sorption mechanisms mainly involved hydrophobic partitioning, H-bonding, cation-π and p/π-π electron donor-acceptor interactions and electrostatic interactions. Additionally, the greater solution pH and Na+ concentration facilitated IMI adsorption on Gt and Gt-DBC samples; however, the Ca2+ solution obtained the opposite result. This effect on IMI adsorption was more pronounced for CGt-DBC samples. Therefore, the findings of this study provide a deep understanding of the interactions between Gt and DBC by adsorption and coprecipitation and their effect on the sorption of organic pollutants in natural soil and water environments.

Trimetallic metal-organic frameworks (Fe, Co, Ni-MOF) derived as efficient electrochemical determination for ultra-micro imidacloprid in vegetables

Hui Shu,Tingrun Lai,Jie Ren,Xiuxiu Cui,Xu Tian,Zhichao Yang,Xuechun Xiao,Yude Wang

The excessive use of imidacloprid in agricultural production leads to a large number of residues that seriously threaten human health. Therefore, the detection of imidacloprid has become very important. But how to quantitatively detect imidacloprid at ultra-low levels is the main challenges. In this work, trimetallic metal-organic frameworks Fe, Co, Ni-MOF (FCN-MOF) is in situ prepared on nickel foam (NF) and then used to make an electrochemical sensor in the detection of imidacloprid. FCN-MOF exhibits the characteristics of ultra-micro concentration detection for imidacloprid with high specific surface area and rich active metal centers. The high conductivity and 3D skeleton structure of the NF electrode enhance the contact site with imidacloprid and promote the transmission of electrons efficiently. All results show that the prepared electrochemical sensor has the advantages of ultra-low detection limits (0.1 pM), wide linear detection ranges (1–5 × 107 pM) and good sensitivity (132.91 μA pM‒1 cm‒2), as well as good reproducibility, excellent anti-interference ability, and fantastic stability. Meanwhile, the electrochemical sensor is used to determine imidacloprid in lettuce, tomato, and cucumber samples with excellent recovery (90%–102.7%). The novel electrochemical sensor is successfully applied to the ultra-micro detection of imidacloprid in vegetables, which provides a new way for the efficient monitoring of imidacloprid in agriculture.

Effectiveness of imidacloprid in combination with a root nitrogen fertilizer applied to tomato seedlings against Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae)

Yuan-Xing Sun,Tong-Xian Liu

The whitefly Bemisia tabaci (biotype B) is a worldwide pest of vegetables and field crops . We tested the efficacy of imidacloprid (IM) with a root fertilizer ‘Root Feed (RF)’ (9% N, 7% Ca, 1.5% Mg and 0.1% B) sub-irrigated in the growing medium against the whitefly on tomato. Tomato seedlings (3–4 true leaves) were treated with 0, 3, 6 or 12 mg active ingredient (a.i.) seedling −1 of IM and with RF (0, 0.02, 0.04 or 0.08 ml seedling −1 ). The efficacy of 12 mg IM seedling −1 was further evaluated in the greenhouse for 60 days. The survival of B. tabaci adults, nymphs, and egg production were negatively affected by the treatments in a dosage-dependent manner. Treatment of 12 mg IM seedling −1 caused >60% adult and nymph mortality 50 days after treatment (DAT). The active ingredient of IM in tomato leaves also increased with the increase of IM dosage. The RF exhibited a limited effect on B. tabaci . However, the mortality of whitefly adults and nymphs treated with RF (0.02 or 0.04 ml seedling −1 ) positively interacted with IM, and was greater than IM alone. In the greenhouse, 12 mg IM seedling −1 greatly reduced the number of whitefly adults and increased the dry weight of the tomato plants at 30 DAT. In conclusion, application of 12 mg IM seedling −1 on tomato seedlings before transplanting effectively controled B. tabaci for up to 50 days, and the efficacy of IM combined with 0.02 ml RF seedling −1 performed even better. This could be a cost-effective method for managing B. tabaci on tomato and other vegetables.

A combination of Tropilaelaps mercedesae and imidacloprid negatively affects survival, pollen consumption and midgut bacterial composition of honey bee

Shilong Ma,Yang Yang,Zhongmin Fu,Qingyun Diao,Mengyue Wang,Qihua Luo,Xing Wang,Pingli Dai

Tropilaelaps mercedesae is not only a major threat to honey bees in Asia but also a potential risk to global apiculture due to trade. Imidacloprid is a systemic insecticide that negatively affects individual bees. Moreover, the health of honey bees may be threatened by imidacloprid exposure and T. mercedesae infestation. We studied the effects of T. mercedesae and imidacloprid on the survival, food consumption and midgut bacterial diversity of Apis mellifera in the laboratory . Illumina 16S rRNA gene sequencing was used to determine the bacterial composition in the honey bee midgut. T. mercedesae decreased survival in parasitized honey bees compared with nonparasitized honey bees, but there was no significant difference in food consumption. The imidacloprid 50 μg/L diet significantly decreased syrup consumption of A. mellifera compared with the control diet. The combination of T. mercedesae infestation and imidacloprid 50 μg/L exposure reduced survival and increased pollen consumption of A. mellifera . T. mercedesae infestation or a combination of T. mercedesae infestation and exposure to 25 μg/L imidacloprid affected the midgut bacterial composition of honey bees. T. mercedesae infestation and imidacloprid exposure may reduce the survival and affect honey bee health.

Optimized terbium doped Ti/PbO2 dimensional stable anode as a strong tool for electrocatalytic degradation of imidacloprid waste water

Ying Zhang,Ping He,Lianhong Zhou,Faqin Dong,Dingming Yang,Hong Lei,Licheng Du,Lingpu Jia,Shiping Zhou

The presence of pesticides in water has emerged as a momentous environmental issue over the past decades. Herein, a terbium doped Ti/PbO 2 (denoted as Ti/PbO 2 –Tb) dimensionally stable Ti/PbO 2 –Tb anode has been successfully prepared by one-step electrodeposition path for electrocatalytic degradation of imidacloprid (IMD) wastewater with high efficiency. Ti/PbO 2 –Tb electrode presents higher oxygen evolution potential, lower charge transfer resistance, stronger stability, longer service lifetime and outstanding electrocatalytic activity than Ti/PbO 2 electrode. The optimum condition for IMD oxidation is obtained by analyzing the effects of some critical operating parameters including temperature, initial pH, current density and electrolyte concentration. It is proved that 70.05% of chemical oxygen demand and 76.07% of IMD are removed after 2.5 h of degradation under current density of 8 mA cm −2 , pH 9, temperature 30 °C and 7.0 g L −1 NaCl electrolyte. In addition, the electrode displays commendable energy saving property as well as favorable reusability. The degradation mechanism of IMD is proposed by analyzing the intermediates identified by LC-MS. The present research provides a feasible strategy to degrade IMD wastewater by Ti/PbO 2 –Tb electrode.
