Preparation of porous carbon materials from black liquor lignin and its utilization as CO2 adsorbents

Jing Zhao,Wenjie Zhang,Dekui Shen,Huiyan Zhang,Zhanghong Wang

Lignin-based porous carbon materials are estimated as promising CO 2 capture adsorbents with thanks to their charateristics as abundant distribution, low-cost preparation and high stability. In this work, a series of porous carbon materials were synthesized from the pulping waste (black liquor lignin) through chemical activation and template method . The morphological structure, porosity and surface chemical properties of the obtained porous carbon materials identified by SEM, XRD , Raman, BET and XPS were highly influenced by the synthesis methods . The porous carbon material prepared by KOH activation (C-BLL-KOH) possessed the most disorder carbon structure, along with the largest BET surface area up to 1336.5 m 2 /g and the highest microporosity accounting for 93.2% of the total pore volume, which is beneficial for capturing CO 2 . The sulfur-contained functional groups in chemically-activated carbon materials were dominated by oxidized sulfur species and oxygen element was mainly in the form of hydroxyl groups. CO 2 adsorption performance of these lignin-based porous carbon materials was carried out at different temperatures (0 °C, 25 °C and 50 °C) to investigate the effect of synthesis method. The most remarkable CO 2 capture capacity was achieved for C-BLL-KOH, which was up to 5.20 mmol/g at 0 °C, 3.60 mmol/g at 25 °C and 2.23 mmol/g at 50 °C at a CO 2 partial pressure of 100 kPa. This result suggested the KOH activation was an effective route to convert black liquor lignin to porous carbon materials as potential absorbents for CO 2 capture.

Synergistic KOH-thiourea activation of corncob biochar for ultrahigh-capacity and stable gaseous iodine capture

Yuchao Guo,Ziliang Jia,Xuli Ma,Huixin Zhang,Xiaowei An,Peifen Wang,Xin Chen,Yongguo Li

A synergistic KOH-thiourea strategy constructs N, S co-doped hierarchical porous biochar. • The biochar achieves an ultrahigh iodine uptake of 6700 mg/g with low desorption. • DFT reveals enhanced iodine adsorption from defect and N/S-induced interactions. Radioactive gaseous iodine generated during nuclear fuel reprocessing poses a serious challenge to off-gas treatment due to its high mobility and radiotoxicity. Herein, a two-step synergistic activation strategy using thiourea and KOH was developed to fabricate N, S co-doped hierarchical porous biochar (NSKBC) from corncob waste. Benefiting from the combined regulation of pore structure and surface chemistry, NSKBC exhibits a surface area of 2923.30 m 2 ·g −1 and delivers an iodine adsorption capacity of 6700 mg/g at 75℃, with only 13% desorption after 24 h at room temperature and ∼80% capacity retention after five adsorption–desorption cycles. Mechanistic investigations based on grey relational analysis, FTIR characterization, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that abundant micropores provide effective physical confinement, while carbon defects and N/S doped sites enhance iodine binding stability through synergistic physical and chemical interactions. This work offers an efficient and sustainable strategy for designing high-performance biochar adsorbents for radioactive gaseous iodine capture. Activating nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets by KOH treatment to promote the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis performance

Qiao Zhao,Xiaoxue Han,Haoting Liang,Yue Wang,Jing Lv,Mei-Yan Wang,Shouying Huang,Xinbin Ma

Both appropriate support and promoter decoration are vital to improve the performance of Fe-based catalysts in Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis (FTS). In this work, KOH chemical activation was applied to modify N-doped carbon nanosheets supported Fe catalysts, which achieves support modification and promoter introduction simultaneously. The influence of KOH activation on pore structure, N configuration and residual K effect were discussed on Fe-based FTS catalyst. Upon KOH activation, the micro-porosity was enriched which improved the Fe dispersion. Meanwhile, the N configuration was regulated through KOH in-situ reacting with carbon matrix. Further investigation on residual K revealed a combined effect of K and N. The physical structure, electronic properties and phase compositions after activation were characterized by N 2 -physisorption, XRD, Raman, TEM, XPS and Mössbauer spectroscopy. Combing with the catalytic performance, we demonstrated that the pyrrolic N sites and suitable K residuals contribute to electron donation to Fe species, collectively promoting Fe carburization accompanied by higher C 2 –C 4 = productivity. This finding is expected to offer an activation method for preparation of N-doped carbon supported metal catalysts.

Fenton-like reaction enhanced activation of biomass-derived porous carbon for high-performance supercapacitor

Juan Yang,Jiao Peng,Yi Tang,Peng Liu,Chaobai Yi,Yongqiang Shen,Liping Zheng,Xianyou Wang

The rational design of high-performance electrode materials plays a key role in the capacitive performance of supercapacitors. This study presents a novel strategy for the synergistic preparation of biomass-derived porous carbon via a mild Fenton-like reaction pretreatment combined with KOH activation. This strategy reveals the formation mechanism of porous carbon, wherein the pretreatment effectively decomposes the macromolecular structures in biomass, promoting the formation of pore structures and the significant increase of activation sites, thus improving the activation efficiency of KOH. Due to the synergistic effects of pretreatment and KOH activation, the obtained porous carbon material exhibits a remarkable specific surface area of 2801 m 2 g –1 , and the activation efficiency doubled compared to the unpretreated sample. In a 3 M KOH electrolyte, the optimized porous carbon electrode has a high specific capacitance of 349 F g −1 . Furthermore, the assembled symmetric supercapacitor retains a capacitance retention rate as high as 99 % after 70,000 charge-discharge cycles, showing exceptional long-term cycling stability. In addition, the symmetric supercapacitor assembled with the porous carbon in 1 M Na 2 SO 4 electrolyte achieves a high energy density of 26.2 Wh kg −1 , further verifying the practical application potential of the material. This study not only confirms the positive role of Fenton-like reaction pretreatment in improving the performance of biomass-based porous carbon materials, but also offers a new insight and method for developing high-performance supercapacitor electrode materials.

Nitrogen and sulfur co-doped porous carbons from polyacrylonitrile fibers for CO2 adsorption

Tingyan Lu,Qian Li,Jiawei Shao,Linlin Wang,Ruixue Pang,Xiaying Wu,Xin Hu

Backgrounds Adsorption by adsorbents is accepted as a promising technology that can efficiently separate CO 2 from flue gas. Optimal adsorption performance can be obtained by specific solid adsorbents with excellent CO 2 adsorption capacity. Methods In this work, N, S co-doped porous carbons were synthesized from polyacrylonitrile fiber by a facile synthesis process i.e. hydrothermal treatment followed by KOH activation. N, S enriched hydrochar was obtained after hydrothermal treatment of polyacrylonitrile fiber and ammonium sulfide. Further KOH activation of hydrochar obtained N, S co-doped carbons with advanced porous structure. Significant findings This series of sorbents has the highest CO 2 uptake of 3.37 and 5.23 mmol g −1 at 1 bar, 25 °C and 0 °C, respectively. Detailed investigation revealed that the mutual effects of narrow microporostiy, N and S content are responsible for the CO 2 uptake of these adsorbents. Additionally, these adsorbents also show various good CO 2 capture properties such as excellent recyclability, reasonable CO 2 /N 2 selectivity, moderate heat of adsorption, fast adsorption kinetics, and good dynamic adsorption capacity. These findings suggest that N, S co-doped porous carbons derived from polyacrylonitrile fiber are potential promising sorbents for CO 2 capture.

Development of polyvinyl alcohol/carrageenan hydrogels and fibers via KOH treatment for Morse code information transmission

Shi Feng,Jing Guo,Qiang Yang,Fucheng Guan,Qiang Yao,Yonghe Wang,Fengyu Quan,Shijun Zeng

To solve the inherent problems of conductive hydrogels, such as relatively low mechanical properties and fatigue resistance, inability to work after water loss, and difficulty weaving. In this study, the borax-crosslinked polyvinyl alcohol/k-carrageenan (kC) conducting hydrogels (BPK KOH ) were prepared by a simple one-pot method, and KOH treatment was used instead of the cumbersome and time-consuming freeze-thaw cycle to improve the comprehensive properties. The KOH treatment increased the hydrogel hydrogen bonding content by 7.72 % and synergized with the induction of kC by K + to enhance the tensile and compressive strengths by 8.12 and 34.6 times, respectively. Meanwhile, the BPK KOH hydrogel's fatigue resistance and shape recovery after water loss were improved. Additionally, the BPK KOH hydrogels can be monitored for finger bending, showing clear and stable differences in electrical signals. BPK KOH hydrogels combined with Morse code realize applications in information transmission and encryption/decryption. Notably, introducing KOH ensures the molding and preparation of BPK KOH hydrogel fibers while having good signal responsiveness and monitoring ability. More importantly, it can be woven into fabrics that can be loaded with heavy weights, which has the potential to be directly applied in smart wearables. This work provides new ideas for applying flexible sensors and wearable smart textiles.

Enhanced emulsifying properties of octenyl succinic anhydride starch by homogeneous modification in KOH/urea aqueous solution

Chong Chen,Yingxin Kang,Yang Song,Xuhui Fan,Shuang Wang,Kaixin Li,Fazheng Ren,Pengjie Wang,Yan Zhang,Siyuan Liu,Weibo Zhang

Homogeneous modification significantly enhanced the DS and dispersibility of OSA-starch. • Emulsions prepared by HoOSA-starch exhibited higher stability than HeOSA-starch. • HoOSA-starch showed superior emulsifying properties without requiring gelatinization. • Emulsion stability was governed by electrostatic and interface characteristics. Octenyl succinic anhydride starch (OSA-starch) is a widely used food-grade emulsifier. However, the heterogeneous synthesis process resulting from insoluble starch granules limits the functional properties of OSA-starch (HeOSA-starch). In this study, KOH/urea solution was used to dissolve starch to prepare OSA-starch via homogeneous modification (HoOSA-starch), and its emulsifying properties were investigated. Homogeneous modification significantly improved the degree of substitution and dispersibility of OSA-starch. Emulsions stabilized by HoOSA-starch exhibited superior stability than those stabilized by HeOSA-starch with lower variations in backscattered light intensity and smaller droplet sizes. Gelatinization improved the dispersibility and emulsifying properties of HeOSA-starch, though they remained inferior to those of HoOSA-starch, suggesting that gelatinization cannot replicate the advantages of homogeneous modification. Increased electrostatic repulsion, surface activity, and interfacial film strength were the driving force for enhanced stability of HoOSA-starch stabilized emulsions. Overall, this study highlights the advantages of homogeneous modification in optimizing the functional properties of OSA-starch. Synergetic Zn doping and KOH etching of CeO2 for enhanced H2S oxidation via electronic structure reconstruction

Honghong Yi,Kai Chen,Hongkun Ni,Yiming Ma,Xiaolong Tang,Qingjun Yu,Fengyu Gao,Shunzheng Zhao

This study employs a synergistic strategy of Zn doping and KOH etching to precisely regulate the physicochemical properties of CeO 2 , significantly enhancing its H 2 S catalytic oxidation performance. Experimental results indicate that Zn doping induces lattice expansion of CeO 2 , while KOH etching further removes Zn, increases Ce 3+ and oxygen vacancy concentrations, thereby optimizing surface acidity-basicity and redox capability. The obtained E-Zn/CeO 2 material exhibits excellent H 2 S conversion, reaction and kinetics, while promoting the selective formation of SO 2 . Mechanistic studies reveal that H 2 S undergoes adsorption and dissociation via μ 2 -OH/–COOH groups on the material surface, with the oxidation process following the MvK mechanism, where oxygen vacancies play a key role in adsorption and lattice oxygen transfer. Theoretical calculations further demonstrate that the synergistic modification induces reconstruction of the electronic structure of CeO 2 , including weakened covalency of Ce O bonds and a spin-state transition of O 2p orbitals, which significantly reduces the oxygen vacancy formation energy (as low as −1.47 eV) and enhances structural stability. This work provides both experimental and theoretical foundations for the rational design of highly efficient H 2 S catalytic materials.

KOH-activated carbon felt with engineered pyridinic-N sites for enhanced phosphate removal via capacitive deionization

Zhoutian Ding,Guangwei Ji,Yubo Pan,Mingzhu Xia,Fenghe Wang,Wu Lei,Fengyun Wang,Xiaoxiao Liu

The treatment of phosphorus-containing wastewater has gained increasing attention due to stringent environmental regulations. This study developed a KOH-activated carbon fiber felt (KACFF) electrode for capacitive deionization (CDI) of phosphate, combining experimental characterization with density functional theory (DFT) calculations to unravel atomic-scale adsorption mechanisms. KOH activation at 800 °C engineered a hierarchical porous structure (1409.79 m 2 /g) with enriched pyridinic-N content (36.5 %), achieving a remarkable H 2 PO 4 − adsorption capacity of 15.65 mg/g at pH 4, which represents a 235 % enhancement versus the pristine activated carbon fiber felt (ACFF). Electrochemical tests demonstrated superior performance with a specific capacitance of 173.59 F/g, a 69.4 % improvement over pristine ACFF. DFT analysis revealed that the adsorption was dominated by synergistic ≡N7 → PO 4 3− coordination and N7-H + ···O23 = P hydrogen bonding, while hydrogen bonding from oxygen-containing functional groups on KACFF further strengthened the binding. Independent Gradient Model (IGM) and Reduced Density Gradient (RDG) analyses visually confirmed and quantified these non-covalent interactions. Hirshfeld surface analysis identified the critical interaction sites with localized electron density (N7-O23: 0.486 a.u.). The electrode maintained 91.9 % of its initial capacity over 10 cycles in an actual spent electroless plating solution, offering a high-performance and practical solution for phosphorus recovery.

Homogenously Rare-Earth-Ion-Doped Nanoceria Synthesis in KOH-NaOH Molten Flux: Characterization and Photocatalytic Property

Mao Xisong,Xia Xuewen,Li Junqi,Chen Chaoyi,Zhang Junshan,Ning Deyang,Lan Yuan-Pei

Homogeneously rare-earth (RE=La, Sm and Y) ions doped CeO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) with enhanced photocatalytic performance were synthesized by a facile KOH-NaOH molten flux method. XRD, TEM, EDS mapping and XPS results demonstrate that RE cations have been successfully doped into the CeO 2 lattice, which leads to the lattice expansion/shrinking, and more oxygen vacancies are generated after RE ions doping. The UV-Vis DRS and PL spectra indicate that RE-doped CeO 2 samples have slightly narrower band gaps and significantly reduced photo-generated electron-hole recombination rates. 5% RE ions doped CeO 2 NPs show excellent photocatalytic performances and the photodegradation ratio of methylene blue (MB) increases from 71.63% of undoped CeO 2 to 76.35%, 77.51% and 77.37% for 5%-La, 5%-Sm and 5%-Y-doped CeO 2 NPs, respectively. The obviously reduced recombination rate of e − /h + pairs after RE ions doping may be the critical factor for the enhanced photocatalytic performance.

Hydrogel electrolyte based on sodium polyacrylate/KOH hydrogel reinforced with bacterial cellulose aerogel for flexible supercapacitors

Di Wang,Zhiyu Li,Li Yang,Jin Zhang,Yuhui Wei,Quan Feng,Qufu Wei

Hydrogels are particularly promising electrolyte materials for constructing flexible and safe quasi-solid state supercapacitor due to their good flexibility, ionic conductivity and intrinsic safety. However, it remains a challenge to simultaneously obtain excellent mechanical robustness, high ionic conductivity and outstanding flexibility, particularly in sub-zero temperatures. Hence, we introduced a novel bacterial cellulose (BC) aerogel reinforced sodium polyacrylate/potassium hydroxide (PANa/KOH) hydrogel as a hydrogel electrolyte for flexible alkaline supercapacitor. The PANa/BC/KOH hydrogel electrolyte showed outstanding mechanical property (stress of 1.1 MPa), excellent anti-swelling performance and high ionic conductivity of 1.91 S m −1 at 25 °C, 1.35 S m −1 at −25 °C, exhibiting a superior anti-freezing performance. Benefiting from these intriguing integrated characteristics, the asymmetric supercapacitor (SC-PANa/BC/KOH) assembled PANa/BC/KOH hydrogel electrolyte and CoNi LDH@CC//AC@CC electrodes delivered a superior energy density of 25.63 W h kg −1 at a power density of 1200 W kg −1 and maintained a good retention of 92.05 % after 10,000 cycles. Meanwhile, the SC-PANa/BC/KOH exhibited excellent flexibility and safety, which is well adapted to various extreme conditions, such as weight-loading, bending and hammering. This work provided new sights into design of strong, anti-freezing, anti-swelling and high ionic conductive hydrogel electrolyte, paving the way for developing extremely safe wearable storage devices.

Mangosteen peel-derived porous carbon: synthesis and its application in the sulfur cathode for lithium sulfur battery

Xue Mingzhe,Chen Chen,Tan Yan,Ren Zhiwei,Li Bing,Zhang Cunman

Porous carbon with various structures from micropores (< 2 nm) to hierarchical pores (0–4 nm) was synthesized from biomass waste mangosteen peels via KOH activation process. Microporous carbon was obtained mainly at a low activation temperature of 700 °C or a low alkali/carbon of 3. Hierarchical porous carbon with ultrahigh surface area (> 3000 m 2  g −1 ) and pore volume (> 1.4 cm 3  g −1 ) was obtained at alkali/carbon ratio higher than 3.5 and activation temperature of 800 °C. Sulfur with a high content of 65 wt% was able to be fully accommodated into the pores of hierarchical porous carbon to form C/S composite cathode for lithium sulfur battery while in the case of microporous carbon, residual sulfur on carbon surface was detected. High specific discharge capacities of more than 800 mAh g −1 were achieved from hierarchical porous carbon/S composites at 0.5 C, and the sample synthesized at alkali/carbon of 4 and activation of 800 °C exhibits the best cycling performance. After 500 cycles at 0.5 C, a high discharge capacity of 509 mAh g −1 was maintained, indicating an excellent capacity retention. Relationship between pore characteristics of porous carbon and the electrochemical performance of its sulfur composite was discussed.
