Methanol
serves as a critical breath biomarker for noninvasive
health monitoring, yet its practical gas sensing detection still suffers
from the inferior selective response and inherent biosafety risks
of existing sensing materials. Herein, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-modified
MAPbI 3 nanotubes have been rationally coated on Au interdigitated
electrodes to construct a noninvasive sensing chip for the selective
detection of methanol in human exhaled breath. Experimental and theoretical
demonstrations reveal that postannealing treatment triggers a template-diffusion
synergistic crystal growth mechanism, which induces the morphological
transformation of MAPbI 3 from nanorods to nanotubes. Such
a unique tubular architecture endows MAPbI 3 with abundant
exposed adsorption sites and favorable mass-transfer channels for
methanol molecules. The optimized, modified MAPbI 3 @PVP/IDE
sensor achieves an ultralow limit of detection of 0.620 ppm toward
methanol, which matches the methanol concentration range in human
exhaled volatile organic compounds. Notably, PVP modification not
only improves the long-term sensing stability of MAPbI 3 toward methanol vapor but also effectively suppresses the leakage
of toxic Pb 2+ , guaranteeing satisfactory biosafety during
human breath detection. This work provides a facile and reliable strategy
for the rational design of high-stability, high-selectivity, and biocompatible
perovskite-based gas sensors toward noninvasive biomarker detection
in human exhaled breath.

A detailed investigation of quantum confinement effects in MAPbI 3 perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) is essential for understanding size-dependent modifications in electronic structure, optical transitions, and carrier dynamics. In this study, we systematically investigate the sizequantization effect in MAPbI 3 PQDs using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UVPS). PQDs of controlled sizes were synthesized via a ligandassisted reprecipitation (LARP) method by varying the concentration of n-octylamine, yielding diameters in the strong to intermediate confinement system. CV measurements enabled direct determination of valence and conduction band-edge positions under ambient conditions. Our results reveal a pronounced upward shift in the conduction band (LUMO) with decreasing particle size, while the valence band (HOMO) exhibits a comparatively smaller shift. This asymmetric band-edge modulation aligns with quantum confinement models, where the extent of energy level shift is inversely related to the carrier effective mass. The larger shift in LUMO is attributed to the lower effective mass of electrons compared to holes in MAPbI 3 .Additionally, a strong correlation between the electrochemical bandgap and optical bandgap was observed, emphasizing the role of increased Coulombic interaction in smaller PQDs. These findings advance the understanding of quantum size effects in MAPbI 3 PQDs and highlight the efficacy of CV as a reliable tool for probing size-dependent electronic structures in PQDs.

The insufficient stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has considerably restrained their development and applications. Herein, we demonstrate an approach to prepare PSCs with high stability and efficiency by adding n-octyltrimethylammonium bromide (OTAB) to the precursor solution. In the resultant films, the charge trap density exhibits a significant reduction, and the long-term stability shows a remarkable enhancement. Upon adding 0.5 mg mL−1 OTAB, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs reaches 18.32% under simulated AM 1.5G solar illumination, which represents an increase of 16% compared to the pristine devices. Moreover, the OTAB-modified devices demonstrate excellent performances both in high-temperature (70 °C, 40 ± 5% relative humidity) and high-humidity (25 °C, 75 ± 5% relative humidity) environments. These results indicate a very promising approach to improve the comprehensive performance of PSCs.

Open-air-processed perovskite solar cells (PSCs) already garnered significant attention of the international scholars because the uncomplicated and economically viable production methods. Nevertheless, the ambient atmosphere frequently poses a multitude of detrimental factors. For example, suboptimal levels of humidity and the presence of oxygen can result in flawed perovskite crystal formation and numerous surface imperfections, significantly diminishing the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and adversely affecting the final PSCs’ overall stability. Therefore, we employ an optimal approach utilizing liquid-phase small molecules to systematically optimize the perovskite layer, specifically incorporating the additive Perfluoro(4-methylpent-2-ene) (C 6 F 12 ), into an environmentally benign anti-solvent for fabricating the MAPbI 3 layer. The C 6 F 12 molecules, are liquid at room temperature, consist of carbon–carbon single or double bonds and carbon–fluorine bonds. Through Lewis acid-base interactions, the fluorine atoms within C 6 F 12 can establish some covalent bonds with lead and methylamine, as well as form hydrogen bonds with methylamine. These bonding mechanisms proficiently address the vacancies created by iodine (V I ) within the perovskite framework. Meanwhile, the inherent hydrophobic properties of fluorine atoms provide improved moisture resistance to perovskite films produced in atmospheric conditions, thereby enhancing the resultant PSCs’ stabilization. Consequently, the upgrade perovskite layers demonstrate larger grain dimensions and diminished trap density. The optimal device, passivated with C 6 F 12 and processed in air, achieves a champion PCE of 21.25%, approaching the performance of samples fabricated in a glove-box. Furthermore, the non-encapsulated device modified with C 6 F 12 demonstrates exceptional stability across multiple variables. This straightforward and environmentally friendly approach is expected to broaden the applicability of PSCs.

Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite films with excellent surface morphology and large grain sizes are crucial for achieving high-performance perovskite solar cells (PSCs). To reduce production costs and meet the growing demand for lightweight thin solar cells, developing ultra-thin absorber layers is an effective approach. However, defects and trap sites are inevitably formed on the surfaces of solution-processed perovskite films. Herein, we present an innovative method that directly incorporates graphite carbon nitride/carbon quantum dots (g-C 3 N 4 /CQDs) into the perovskite precursor solution, using them as structural template to modulate film growth. The g-C 3 N 4 /CQDs delay crystallization through the formation of a MA·g-C 3 N 4 /CQDs intermediate adduct, which reduces light absorption loss by increasing enlarge grain size and minimizing numerous pinhole defects in thin perovskite films. Additionally, the amide bond formed between g-C 3 N 4 and CQDs can accelerate charge transport, as demonstrated by density functional theory calculation. As a result, the PSCs based on high-quality 360 nm MAPbI 3 :g-C 3 N 4 /CQDs films achieved a champion power conversion efficiency of 20.49 %. The devices retained more than 90 % of their initial efficiency for over 500 h in air without encapsulation. This work not only provides valuable insights into the role of 2D/0D carbon-based heterojunctions in PSCs, but also provides a straightforward technique for crystallization regulation to achieve efficient and stable PSCs.

Because numerous adverse factors, such as unsuitable humidity and oxygen atmosphere, usually lead to imperfect perovskite crystallization and various surface defects, thus the perovskite films are susceptible to corrosion during their open-air environment preparation. Which severely reduce both the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of ultimate device. Hence, in order to precisely alter the MAPbI 3 perovskite layer, a polymer passivation technique is used via adding Poly[nitrilo(diphenoxyphosphoranylidyne)] (PDPP) additive into green anti-solvent. PDPP not only possesses the flexibility of common polymer long chains, but also one of the few substances that can simultaneously form covalent bonds (Pb-O), halogen bonds (P-I) and hydrogen bonds (N…H) with perovskite lattices to inhibit the generation of vacancies. The high-quality perovskite thin films can profoundly enhance the photoelectricity performance of PSCs. PDPP also has certain electrical activity, hydrophobic properties and strong thermal stability, which beneficial for improving the stability of ultimate device. As a result, the air-processed PDPP-passivated optimal device (non-encapsulated) obtain 21.36% champion PCE and excellent multivariate stability (including humidity, temperature, sunlight exposure and bending). This straightforward, environmentally friendly and cost-effective approach can pave the way of its applicability.

Low-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials have attracted much attention in photoelectric devices due to their exotic performance in optoelectronics compared with their bulk and thin-film counterparts. In this article, using a simple ligand-assisted deposition method, we successfully synthesized uniform methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ) perovskite nanorods, nanotriangles and nanocubes, and investigated their photoelectric properties after fabricated into photodetectors (PDs) on SiO 2 /Si substrates. It is found that the synthesized MAPbI 3 nanorods not only have extremely small optical band gap (minimum of ~1.36 eV), but also have long photoluminescence (PL) lifetime (longest of ~7.81 μs) and high absolute PL quantum yields (maximum of ~ 45%), and the PL lifetime is more than about one order of magnitude higher than that the reported previously. The PDs based on MAPbI 3 nanorods presented a wide spectral response “window” from 350 to at least 950 nm, and exhibited a photoresponsivity of 12.2 mA/W, a detectivity of 2.67 × 10 11 Jones, the on/off ratio of more than 800, the rise/decay time constants of 18/25 ms, under the excitation at 405 nm. Further analysis suggests that the dramatically improved photo-electric conversion properties of the nanorods PDs could be closely related with their morphology dependent properties, including bandgap, PL lifetime, trap density (n trap ) and carrier concentration. These results provide a simple and effective method for preparing different morphology low-dimensional MAPbI 3 , and discuss the mechanism of morphology-dependent photoelectric performance of PDs, which is of great significance for potential applications in the field of photoelectronic devices.

The high density of defects in MAPbI 3 perovskite films brings about severe carrier nonradiative recombination, which lowers the photovoltaic performance and the stability of MAPbI 3 -based perovskite solar cells (PSCs). To tackle this issue, we prepared stable and efficient MAPbI 3 -based PSCs with incorporation of sodium thiocyanate (NaSCN). NaSCN can increase grain size and improve crystallization quality of the perovskite films due to an Ostwald ripening effect of SCN - and surface passivation of Na + which can effectively passivate the defect states and inhibit nonradiative recombination for an ultimate improvement of the device performance and stability. The excellent characteristics lead to a significant enhancement of the power conversion efficiency (PCE) from 18.1 % to 19.4 % both for MAPbI 3 -based and Cs 0.06 MA 0.15 FA 0.79 PbI 2.5 Br 0.5 -based PSCs, respectively. The unencapsulated NaSCN-treated PSCs also shows a improved stability after aging under a relative humidity of 40 ± 5 % for 15 days.

Perovskite single crystals have recently been regarded as emerging candidates for photovoltaic application due to their improved optoelectronic properties and stability compared to their polycrystalline counterparts. However, high interface and bulk trap density in micrometer-thick thin single crystals strengthen unfavorable nonradiative recombination, leading to large open-circuit voltage ( V OC ) and energy loss. Herein, hydrophobic poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) molecule is incorporated into a hole transport layer to interact with undercoordinated Pb 2+ and promote ion diffusion in a confined space, resulting in higher-quality thin single crystals with reduced interface and bulk defect density, suppressed nonradiative recombination, accelerated charge transport, and extraction. As a result, a remarkably enhanced V OC of up to 1.13 V and efficiency of 22.1% are achieved, which are both the highest values for MAPbI 3 single-crystal solar cells. Moreover, the reduced defect density and suppressed carrier recombination lead to superior weak light response of the single-crystal solar cells after incorporation of P3HT, and an indoor photovoltaic efficiency of 39.2% at 1000 lux irradiation is obtained.

In ambient air, a long-chain dodecafluorosuberic acid (DFSA) with lower Young’s modulus was introduced to improve the mechanical compatibility of perovskite/carbon interface. Firstly, the carbonyl groups C O and F – in DFSA can passivate the intrinsic defects of perovskite, the DFSA effectively reduces the Young’s modulus of the perovskite and mitigates residual stress generated during perovskite annealing procedure. Most importantly, DFSA significantly enhances the Young’s modulus compatible degree between DFSA-CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 (DFSA-MAPbI 3 , 35.8 GPa) and carbon (6.3 GPa), alleviating the interfacial stress concentration. Based on quantitatively analysis, interfical crack driving energy ( G d ) is reduced from 0.63 to 0.43 J m −2 , while the adhesive fracture energy ( G a ) is increased from 0.47 to 0.54 J m −2 , which reduces the probability of crack propagation and ductile delamination, and is conducive to the extraction and transmission of photogenerated carrior. This was also verified in finite element simulations. Finally, the photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of the organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite (MAPbI 3 ) PSC device is improved from 10.27 % to optimal 14.12 %. After service at room temperature with relative humidity (RH) of 50–55 % and high temperature of 85 °C for 720 h, the original efficiency is maintained at 72 % and 89 %, respectively.

Perovskite films prepared using the solution method suffer from excessive defects and poor crystallinity. Carboxylic acid groups (−COOH) are widely used as additives in perovskite to passivate defects and enhance crystallization. Herein, 4,4′-sulfonyldibenzoic acid (SA) was incorporated as an additive into the perovskite precursor solution. The −COOH groups in SA enable interactions with MAPbI3. The results demonstrate that the coordination interaction between the −C=O group of −COOH and Pb2+ retards the growth of MAPbI3 films, while the hydrogen bonding between the −OH group and I– contributes to the passivation of iodine-related defects. Additionally, the introduction of SA induces compressive strain in the perovskite lattice. The SA-modified MAPbI3 photodetector achieved a maximum external quantum efficiency of 89.88%, a dark current density of 1.46 × 10–10 A cm–2, and significantly enhanced device stability.

After an overwhelmingly fast increase during the period from 2009 to 2016, the power conversion efficiency of hybrid perovskite solar cells levels at ≈22% during the past two years. Every small advance to theoretical limits of the photovoltaic metrics will significantly deepen the understanding of internal processes inside the perovskite solar cells. Here, by introducing chloroform as the antisolvent, the one-step deposition method to fabricate methylammonium lead tri-iodide (MAPbI 3 ) perovskite films under ambient air condition is optimized. With MAPbI 3 solar cells of a planar architecture, a record high V oc of 1.18 V is obtained under simulated AM1.5 sunlight. The achievement helps pure MAPbI 3 to reestablish its potential as a model compound for research in hybrid perovskite solar cells. After systematic comparison on different electron transport layers (SnO 2 and TiO 2 ) and fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates of different roughness for photon trapping inside MAPbI 3 solar cells, the remaining 0.14 V V oc loss is elucidated to be due to the poor luminescent property of the MAPbI 3 films.
