CO 2 absorption performance for various blended N ,N- dimethylethanolamine (DMEA) solutions in the presence of absorption promoters including Monoethanolamine (MEA), Piperazine (PZ), 2-(Ethylamino)ethanol (EAE), 2-(Methylamino)ethanol (MAE) and 2-Amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP) was investigated in terms of CO 2 absorption flux by using a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) hollow fiber membrane contactor. The experimental results show that the CO 2 absorption flux increases with a reasonable increase in liquid velocity, liquid temperature and total amine concentration. Also, the CO 2 absorption flux can increase by increasing gas velocity, CO 2 partial pressure but decrease with the increased lean CO 2 loading. In addition, it can be found that all of the investigated activated amines can improve the CO 2 absorption flux of aqueous DMEA solution. For fresh amine solution, the order of CO 2 absorption flux for the investigated amine blends can be ranked as: DMEA < DMEA + AMP < DMEA + MEA < DMEA + EAE < DMEA + MAE < DMEA + PZ. By contrast, for the amine solution with CO 2 loading of over 0.3 mol/mol, the order has also changed accordingly and can be ranked as: DMEA < DMEA + AMP < DMEA + EAE < DMEA + MAE < DMEA + MEA < DMEA + PZ. The DMEA + PZ mixture presents a significant improvement up to 52.44% in CO 2 absorption flux compared to that of single DMEA solution, and can be considered as a promising alternative for CO 2 capture.

Mixing amines with different properties is considered a smart strategy for developing efficient aqueous solutions for reversible CO 2 capture. Specifically, dual-amine blends containing the tertiary amine 2-dimethylamino-2-methyl-1-propanol (2DMA2M1P) have proven to be particularly advantageous due to significantly lower regeneration costs compared to conventional sorbents. With the aim of formulating high-efficiency sorbents, in this work we evaluated the improvement in the CO 2 capture performance of such dual-amine blends by adding a further amine to form trio-amine systems: the use of three amines with different characteristics could further emphasize the advantages obtainable during both absorption and desorption. We formulated three new different aqueous solutions prepared by mixing 2DMA2M1P with the reaction rate promoter ethanolamine (MEA) and the absorption capacity promoter 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP) in different molar ratios. For each blend, the CO 2 solubility at equilibrium, the CO 2 absorption rate from a gaseous mixture, the regeneration rate at T = 373 K and the energy requirement for desorption were determined experimentally. In addition, to better understand the capture mechanism, 13 C NMR spectroscopy was employed to evaluate the speciation of each blend during the CO 2 absorption. Their CO 2 capture performance was compared with that of the benchmark aqueous MEA and two 2DMA2M1P-based dual-amine mixtures, obtained with the same procedure. As a finding, all formulated trio-amine blends have superior CO 2 equilibrium solubility and desorption performance compared with MEA 5 M. Noteworthy, the comparison with similar dual-amine systems highlighted the role of a suitable third amine in order to obtain enhance both absorption and desorption efficiencies. Among the formulated systems, MEA-2DMA2M1P-AMP (1:2:2) is potentially the most suitable to replace MEA in CO 2 capture processes after a careful cost-benefit analysis on larger scale systems.

Hyaluronidase expression is known to be upregulated in various pathological conditions. A method based on a combination of ratiometric surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) and magnetic separation is described for the determination of hyaluronidase (HAase) activity. Gold nanospheres (AuNPs) functionalized by 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid (4-MPBA) form stable cyclic esters with diol on hyaluronic acid (HA) by the boronic acid group, while Fe 3 O 4 @ [email protected] modified with mercaptoethylamine (MEA) was used as a capture substrate to bind to the carboxyl group on the surface of HA, forming the “ [email protected] @HA/Fe 3 O 4 @ [email protected] @MEA” “core-satellite” structure. When HAase is present, HA is enzymatically disrupted, resulting in the destruction of the “core-satellite” structure, the SERS signal of 4-MPBA is subsequently weakened. The gold shell in the substrate protects the 5,5′-Dithio bis-(2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB) from the external environment, which makes it become an ideal internal standard (IS) molecule for subsequent calibration. Under optimal conditions, the I 1075 /I 1324 varied in the range of 10 −3 - 10 U‧mL −1 HAase activity, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.32 mU‧mL −1 ,below the level of HAase in normal human body fluids. This method has been successfully applied to the determination of HAase activity in urine and is expected to provide a new method in disease detection, especially in the non-invasive detection of bladder cancer.

In recent years, a large number of studies have shown that amine based water-lean absorbents formed by amines and organic solvents exhibit high capture efficiency and low regeneration energy consumption in CO 2 capture. However, there is a lack of research that combines molecular level structure with macroscopic properties. In order to optimize the performance of amine based homogeneous water-lean absorbents by utilizing the properties of organic solvents, and to explore the correlation between the macroscopic properties of the absorbents (CO 2 capacity, removal efficiency, regeneration rate, regeneration efficiency, etc.) and the molecular structure of the absorbent components. We used experiments and molecular dynamics to study the linear terminal diamine DMEDA and non-proton polar solvent (DMF, DMPA, NMP, SFL, DMSO) system. It was found that the absorption and desorption performance of water-lean solvents was higher than that of aqueous solutions 30 wt% MEA and 30 wt% DMEDA, among which EFH with DMF as the solvent has better comprehensive performance. The molecular dynamics simulation was built to describe the solution structures of these absorbents. Through RDF calculations, the unique behavior of DMEDA in non-proton polar solvent was revealed on molecular level, it was found that organic solvents tend to aggregate with DMEDA molecules to form large molecular clusters, while CO 2 molecules may diffuse through ordered pore structures, resulting in a significant improvement in the capture performance. And it was found that there is a quantitative relationship between the intensity of intermolecular interaction between DMEDA and CO 2 and the removal efficiency change in DMEDA water-lean absorbents. A functional relationship was fitted, and a preliminary and rapid method for determining capture performance through molecular dynamics was proposed.

High desorption energy consumption and low cyclic loading are critical issues limiting the application of onboard carbon capture (OCC) systems. In this study, a tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) and 2–amino–2–methyl–1–propanol (AMP) mixed amine solvent with low desorption energy consumption and high CO 2 cyclic loading, suitable for the operational environment of OCC systems, has been proposed. Detailed research was conducted on the capture performance and mechanism of the TEPA + AMP mixed amine solvent. The 0.25M TEPA+0.75M AMP mixed amine solvent exhibited the best performance, with an 86.5% increase in CO 2 loading, a 214% increase in single–cycle CO 2 loading, a 236% increase in CO 2 loading after four cycles compared to monoethanolamine (MEA), and a 20.76% reduction in desorption energy consumption. In addition, to address the challenge of applying polyamine mixed solutions in the simulation studies of OCC systems, the capture mechanism was analyzed using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) characterization. The results indicated that increasing AMP promoted HCO 3 − formation in the TEPA + AMP mixed amine solvent. Since HCO 3 − decomposed more easily than carbamate, it reduced desorption energy consumption. However, an excess of AMP inhibited the absorption rate of TEPA, affecting the absorption capacity. Increasing the concentration of TEPA enhanced the amine concentration in the absorbent and improved the absorption performance. Nevertheless, excessive TEPA caused AMP to participate only in deprotonation reactions, which was not conducive to reducing desorption energy consumption.

Artificial photosynthesis converting CO 2 into valuable compounds has garnered significant interest. However, the insufficient surface activity sites, weak adsorption capacity of CO 2 and poor electron-hole separation capability hinder CO 2 photoreduction used for practical implementation. Herein, Bi nanoparticles/Bi 24 O 31 Br 10 composite photocatalyst (Bi/BOB) was designed constructed through in-situ reduction of bismuth metal on the surface of ultra-thin Bi 24 O 31 Br 10 nanosheets. Bi/BOB exhibits an excellent ability to reduce CO 2 to CO. The CO 2 reduction rate of the optimized Bi/BOB composite catalyst is 43.07 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 , which is significantly superior to other reported bismuth-based photocatalysts. Experimental characterization and Theoretical simulation calculation reveal that the in-situ reduction of bismuth metal causes significant local lattice distortion and uneven charge distribution, thereby producing a strong interaction between Bi nanoparticles and BOB support. So, it enhances the adsorption and activation of carbon dioxide molecules and reduces the Gibbs free energy barrier during the catalytic reaction. Moreover, the strong interaction helps to enhance the separation of photogenerated charge carriers and stability of catalysts. This study offers research suggestions for the interaction between metal and support to enhance CO 2 reduction.

Amine degradation is one of the key issues that hampers the implementation of amine-based post combustion carbon capture technology. In this work, the oxidative degradation of fourteen structurally varied amines were experimentally studied by measuring the amine loss, alkalinity change, ammonia yield, and degradation product. There is a linear relationship between amine loss against alkalinity change and ammonia yield, indicating that the degradation product either loss reactivity for CO 2 absorption or emit out as the small molecule. The results have shown that amine stability generally increased with amine order and stronger steric hindrance effect. Most primary and secondary amines showed more than 40 % amine loss after 336 h degradation experiment, while most of tertiary amines showed less than 10 % amine loss. This may be due to the exposed amine groups of primary and secondary amines. The oxidative degradation mechanism was studied based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

The extracellular matrix (ECM) is critical for drug resistance in colorectal cancer (CRC). The abundant collagen within the ECM significantly influences tumor progression and matrix-mediated drug resistance (MMDR) by binding to discoidin domain receptor 1 (DDR1), but the specific mechanisms by which tumor cells modulate ECM via DDR1 and ultimately regulate TME remain poorly understand. Furthermore, overcoming drug resistance by modulating the tumor ECM remains a challenge in CRC treatment. In this study, a novel mechanism is elucidated by which DDR1 mediates the interactions between tumor cells and collagen, enhances collagen barriers, inhibits immune infiltration, promotes drug efflux, and leads to MMDR in CRC. To address this issue, a multistage drug delivery system carrying DDR1-siRNA and chemotherapeutic agents is employed to disrupt collagen barriers by silencing DDR1 in tumor, enhancing chemotherapy drugs diffusion and facilitating immune infiltration. These findings not only revealed a novel role for collagen-rich matrix mediated by DDR1 in tumor resistance, but also introduced a promising CRC treatment strategy.

Tremendous research efforts are developed to suppress the reverse dark current ( J d ) and enhance the responsivity of organic photodiodes (OPDs). The functional layers of traditional OPDs usually follow the principle of energy level alignment to make unobstructed photo-carriers transport under reverse bias, but this inevitably leads to a large forward J d . Herein, a universal strategy is proposed to manipulate the carrier dynamics and effectively suppress the forward J d of OPDs, that is, tuning the energy level and electron traps of the anode interface layers (AILs). The bandgap and electron traps of typical organometallic chelate AIL (PEIE-Co) can be well controlled by adjusting the component ratio of PEIE and metal ions. The wide bandgap increases the carrier injection barrier under reverse and forward bias, endowing OPD with a much lower J d ; the electron traps induce hole tunneling injection by capturing photo-generated electrons under forward bias, thereby enabling the photomultiplication effect. The obtained OPD exhibits photoconductive/photomultiplication working mode at reverse/forward bias and the specific detectivity approaches ≈10 13 /10 12 Jones, showing promise for adaptively detecting faint and strong light. This study presents an intelligent strategy to achieve dual-mode OPDs, paving the way for the multifunctional development of photodetectors.

Bias-switchable dual-mode organic photodiodes (OPDs) that integrate photovoltaic and photomultiplication modes are recently developed and shown prospects in complex light-intensity applications. Yet, the device physics that focuses on carrier dynamics is still a challenge and needs to be further explored. Herein, dual-mode OPDs are developed through interface layer manipulation, that is, introducing cathode interface layers (typically, Zn x O:D149) with deep energy levels and abundant bulk defects and an anode interface layer of thermally-evaporated ZnO (e-ZnO) with a wide bandgap. Under reverse bias, Zn x O:D149 forms a barrier wall to effectively block external holes and maintain the photovoltaic mode of the OPDs. Under forward bias, the capturing effect of Zn x O:D149 and blocking effect of e-ZnO help to reduce the dark current; when under illumination, defect traps capture photo-generated holes, eliminating the barrier traps and promoting unobstructed injection of external carriers to achieve photomultiplication effect. The typical device delivers high specific detectivity (>10 12 Jones) and fast response (<40 µs), and exhibits disparate external quantum efficiency in two operating modes, showing promise for simultaneously detecting faint and strong light. This general strategy for preparing dual-mode OPDs is compatible with CMOS processing technology and meets the miniaturization and integration requirements of next-generation detection systems.

Zinc porphyrin is a promising carbonic anhydrase (CA) mimic for promoting CO2 absorption, but its application is hindered by poor dispersibility in absorption solutions. To address these challenges, we developed a strategy to impregnate zinc porphyrin on an γ-Al2O3 carrier. The hydrophilic surface groups and porous structure of γ-Al2O3 were expected to enhance both the hydrophilicity and stability of zinc porphyrin. To verify its feasibility, zinc tetraphenylporphyrin (ZnTPP) was chosen as the representative to synthesize ZnTPP/Al2O3. Characterizations showed that ZnTPP could be loaded into the pores of γ-Al2O3 in a highly dispersed state. Also, ZnTPP/Al2O3 could be uniformly dispersed in the absorption liquid, effectively exposing the Zn2+ active sites and reducing diffusion resistance. CO2 absorption experiments revealed that ZnTPP/Al2O3 significantly enhanced CO2 absorption in water, 20 wt % K2CO3, and 20 wt % monoethanolamine (MEA) solutions, far outperforming original ZnTPP. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further elucidated the interaction mechanisms, showing that oxygen atoms on γ-Al2O3 stabilize ZnTPP by forming van der Waals and coordination bonds with Zn2+ active sites. Additionally, these oxygen atoms donate electrons to Zn2+, enhancing its catalytic activity. These findings highlight the effectiveness of this strategy and provide a promising pathway for optimizing other CA-mimics for CO2 capture applications.

Indoor photovoltaics (IPVs) have attracted increasing attention for sustainably powering Internet of Things (IoT) electronics. Sb 2 S 3 is a promising IPV candidate material with a bandgap of ~1.75 eV, which is near the optimal value for indoor energy harvesting. However, the performance of Sb 2 S 3 solar cells is limited by nonradiative recombination, which is dependent on the quality of the absorber films. Additive engineering is an effective strategy to fine tune the properties of solution-processed films. This work shows that the addition of monoethanolamine (MEA) into the precursor solution allows the nucleation and growth of Sb 2 S 3 films to be controlled, enabling the deposition of high-quality Sb 2 S 3 absorbers with reduced grain boundary density, optimized band positions, and increased carrier concentration. Complemented with computations, it is revealed that the incorporation of MEA leads to a more efficient and energetically favorable deposition for enhanced heterogeneous nucleation on the substrate, which increases the grain size and accelerates the deposition rate of Sb 2 S 3 films. Due to suppressed carrier recombination and improved charge-carrier transport in Sb 2 S 3 absorber films, the MEA-modulated Sb 2 S 3 solar cell yields a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.22% under AM1.5 G illumination, and an IPV PCE of 17.55% under 1000 lux white light emitting diode (WLED) illumination, which is the highest yet reported for Sb 2 S 3 IPVs. Furthermore, we construct high performance large-area Sb 2 S 3 IPV minimodules to power IoT wireless sensors, and realize the long-term continuous recording of environmental parameters under WLED illumination in an office. This work highlights the great prospect of Sb 2 S 3 photovoltaics for indoor energy harvesting.
