Magnesium, a cheap and abundant metal, holds tremendous promise for on-board hydrogen storage over the past several decades. However, the practical application of MgH 2 is still hampered by various challenges, including a high efficient catalyst. Zirconium and Zr-based alloys show great potential to serve as hydrogen transfer center due to their high activity in hydrogen dissociation and diffusion. In this paper, ZrCo nanosheets were successfully prepared via a facile wet-chemical technique and then introduced to improve the hydrogen storage properties of MgH 2 . With the addition of 10 wt% ZrCo nanosheets, the modified MgH 2 composite could desorb approximately 6.3 wt% H 2 within 5 min at 300 °C and absorb 4.4 wt% H 2 under 3 Mpa hydrogen pressure in 10 min even at 120 °C. The de/hydrogenation activation energy were calculated to be 90.4 ± 1.6 kJ/mol and 57.6 ± 1.0 kJ/mol for the MgH 2 +10 wt% ZrCo composite, which reasonably explain the remarkably improved de/hydrogenation performance. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Transmission electron microscope (TEM) results revealed that hydrogen could be diffused between the composite more easily with the presence of well dispersed ZrCo, which acted as “hydrogen pump” for hydrogen boundaries/interface diffusion along the Mg/MgH 2 interfaces. Theoretical calculations revealed that the Mg–H bonds were extracted and weakened when adsorbed on the surface of ZrCo. Furthermore, the MgH 2 +10 wt% ZrCo composite showed superior cycling performance with the aid of graphene, indicative of potential application in the nearest future in the area of hydrogen storage.

MgH 2 is deemed a promising hydrogen storage medium due to its high theoretical capacity (7.6 wt%). However, its commercialization remains constrained by critical scientific hurdles, including elevated absorption/desorption temperatures, inferior kinetics, and cycling instability. Catalytic engineering enables comprehensive performance enhancement of MgH 2 . Herein, functionalized rare-earth perovskite nanoparticles were synthesized via sol-gel route as catalysts to enhance the comprehensive hydrogen storage properties of MgH 2 . The catalyzed MgH 2 exhibited a drastically reduced initial dehydrogenation temperature from 320 to 214 °C, and enabling room-temperature hydrogen absorption. Subsequently, over 5 wt% reversible hydrogen absorption/desorption was achieved at 175/320 °C within 2 h. DSC analysis further revealed a notable reduction in dehydrogenation activation energy (from 128.44 to 98.62 kJ mol −1 ) and optimized dehydrogenation kinetics. Additionally, 5.5 wt% hydrogen release is retained after the 10th dehydrogenation cycle, and the cycle performance is well improved. Moreover, the modification mechanism was studied by multiple means of characterization. The results indicate that the incorporated LaNi 0·8 Co 0·2 O 3 interacts with MgH 2 during dehydrogenation, in-situ forming active catalytic phases (e.g., LaH 3.01 , Ni, Co, and Mg 2 Ni). The in-situ generation of diverse active phases establishes a multi-catalytic environment for MgH 2 via “hydrogen spillover” and “hydrogen pump” effects, synergistically enhancing its hydrogen storage capabilities. This experiment provides a reference value for promoting the commercial application of MgH 2 and designing more efficient catalysts.

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) is a promising solid-state hydrogen carrier due to its high theoretical hydrogen yield and environmentally benign hydrolysis byproducts. However, its practical utilization is severely hindered by sluggish hydrolysis kinetics and low conversion efficiency, which are mainly caused by the rapid formation of a dense Mg(OH) 2 passivation layer. In this study, a low-cost multiphase catalytic system was developed to synergistically accelerate the hydrolysis performance of MgH 2 in seawater. MgH 2 -metal chloride-Na composites were synthesized via high-energy ball milling, and the effects of chloride species (FeCl 3 , CuCl 2 , CoCl 2 , and MgCl 2 ), additive content, milling parameters, and temperature on hydrolysis performance were systematically investigated. Among the studied systems, the MgH 2 -FeCl 3 -Na composite exhibited superior hydrolysis performance, achieving a hydrogen yield of 1560 mL·g −1 (∼99% conversion) within 10 min at 30 °C. The mean hydrogen generation rate reached 393.09 mL·g −1 ·min −1 , which is significantly higher than that of pristine MgH 2 and other chloride-based systems. Kinetic analysis further revealed a markedly reduced apparent activation energy of 25.98 kJ·mol −1 . Microstructural characterization suggests that this enhanced performance originates from a pronounced synergistic effect between FeCl 3 and metallic Na. Specifically, chloride ions induce localized corrosion and effectively disrupt the Mg(OH) 2 passivation layer, while the exothermic reaction between Na and water generates localized heat and modifies the alkaline microenvironment. The synergistic effect dynamically regulates the reaction interface, facilitating the formation of loose, porous Mg(OH) 2 layers that enable sustained hydrolysis. This study highlights the effectiveness of multiphase synergistic catalysts and provides a practical and economical strategy for rapid hydrogen generation from MgH 2 .

A novel catalyst of Ni/CeVO 4- x @NC (nano carbon) was prepared via the coprecipitation-reduction method and then ball-milled with MgH 2 . During the precipitation process, elemental Ni was formed in situ. The catalyst was characterized to have a multiphase structure, with CeVO 3 as the main phase coexisting with the CeVO 4 phase; the latter contains abundant oxygen vacancies (denoted as CeVO 4- x ). Oxygen vacancy defects facilitate the efficient dissociation of MgH 2 and exert a synergistic catalytic effect with metallic Ni, as well as multivalent Ce and V species. The MgH 2 + 4 wt% Ni/CeVO 4- x @NC composite absorbs 5.36 wt% H 2 within 2 min at 553 K and releases 5.71 wt% H 2 within 78 min. This composite exhibits an initial hydrogen desorption temperature of 465 K, which contributes to the reduction of MgH 2 's thermodynamic stability. First-principles calculations were performed on the MgH 2 + Ni/CeVO 3 @NC model, encompassing the states of the composite both before and after hydrogen absorption and desorption. It was found that the introduction of metallic Ni provides additional quantum states and active sites for electron migration, thereby enhancing the electron transfer capability of the composite surface.

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) for hydrogen storage suffers from high thermodynamic stability and slow kinetics. Vacancy engineering has emerged as an effective strategy to improve its performance. Herein, vanadium-deficient VSe 2 nanoflowers assembled from nanosheets were fabricated via Nb doping, which introduced cation vacancies acting as efficient catalysts for MgH 2 . MgH 2 +10 wt% Nb-doped VSe 2 exhibits greatly enhanced kinetics compared with pure MgH 2 and undoped VSe 2 -added MgH 2 . At 275 °C, it releases ∼6.11 wt% H 2 within 300 s and retains 5.66 wt% after 60 cycles. The improved performance stems from three synergistic effects: electron-rich interfaces boosting H 2 dissociation, multivalent V 4+ /Nb 5+ accelerating electron transfer, and active phases (V, MgSe) providing more active sites and diffusion pathways. This study offers a valuable defect-engineering route for high-performance hydrogen storage catalysts.

Herein, we report the multi-metal atomic catalysts for solid-state dehydrogenation of MgH 2 . It aims to reveal the multi-element synergy in catalysts for solid-state hydrogen storage. The kinetic measurements and fitting reveal two mechanisms: one shows a maximum rate at the early stage, such as V and Cr; the other needs a temperature-sensitive preparation time for its maximum rate, such as Ni. The combination of two catalyst components demonstrates the best kinetics: V and Cr boost the initial dehydrogenation, and Ni benefits the further hydrogen transfer which alleviates the rate of decay. This work provides guidelines for the design of multi-element doped catalysts for MgH 2 dehydrogenation.

Hydrogen is a clean, high-energy-density carrier crucial for carbon neutrality, but its practical use is limited by efficient storage. Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) is promising for solid-state storage due to its ultra-high capacity (∼7.6 wt%) and environmental benignity, yet hindered by high operating temperatures (>623 K) and sluggish sorption kinetics. This work develops a flower-like NiMOF@C catalyst to improve MgH 2 's low-temperature performance and cyclic stability. In this work, a series of NiMOF-derived catalytic materials with a distinctive spherical flower-like morphology were synthesized by regulating the reaction temperature during the NiMOF fabrication process. The experimental results unequivocally demonstrated that the obtained NiMOF@C exhibited outstanding catalytic performance. This superior activity is primarily ascribed to its hierarchical flower-like microstructure, featuring a complex internal framework and abundant meso-macroporous cavities, which collectively contribute to a significantly enlarged specific surface area and a high density of accessible active sites. Among all the prepared composites, the MgH 2 sample incorporating 5 wt% NiMOF@C manifested the most pronounced hydrogen storage behavior, maintaining excellent kinetics even under relatively mild thermodynamic conditions. Specifically, at 423 K and 2.6 MPa, the composite achieved a maximum hydrogen uptake of 6.47 wt%, with a rapid absorption of 6.03 wt% H 2 within 10 min. Moreover, it exhibited remarkable reversibility, preserving 97.8% of its absorption and 97.4% of its desorption capacity after 20 consecutive cycles. Notably, the desorption activation energy (E de ) of MgH 2 –5 wt% NiMOF@C was substantially reduced to 91.03 kJ/mol, in sharp contrast to the 181.4 kJ/mol observed for pristine MgH 2 , confirming the pronounced catalytic effect of the NiMOF-derived carbonaceous phase.

Highly fine, dispersive, and active catalysts are essential for lowering the operating temperature of MgH2, a promising high-capacity material for solid-state hydrogen storage. In this work, ultrafine Ni nanoparticles (2–6 nm) are synthesized from the precursor nickel acetylacetonate (C10H14NiO4) on the surface of MgH2 by H2 plasma reduction process, followed by further ball milling. The obtained composite could rapidly release more than 6.5 wt % H within 10 min at 275 °C. Even at a low temperature of 225 °C, up to 6 wt % H could be desorbed. The MgH2–Ni composite also exhibits excellent low-temperature hydrogenation kinetics and almost no capacity degradation over nine hydrogenation/dehydrogenation cycles. The significant improvement in the hydrogen-storage properties is attributed to the in situ formation of ultrafine and stable Mg2NiH0.3 nanocrystals during cycling. This work provides a convenient approach to synthesize ultrafine metal nanoparticles for catalytic applications in the field of high energy storage density hydride materials.

Complex metal oxide catalysts greatly accelerate the hydrogen sorption rates in the magnesium hydride system. In this study, the graphene-supported Sc2O3/TiO2 catalyst is synthesized by means of a simple method, and a surprisingly synergetic effect of the Sc2O3-TiO2 cocatalyst on the hydrogen storage performance of MgH2 is observed. The MgH2-Sc2O3/TiO2@Gn composite starts to release hydrogen at 140 °C and reaches the peak dehydrogenation temperature at 239.9 °C. It absorbs 6.55 wt% of H2 in 1 min and desorbs 5.71 wt% of H2 in 10 min at 300 °C, showing excellent hydrogen absorption and desorption performance. Furthermore, with the decrease of the grain size and changes in the structure, the activity of the catalyst is greatly improved. The low-valent titanium and scandium and oxygen vacancies formed in the process of dehydrogenation facilitate hydrogen diffusion and electron transfer, and further improve the kinetic performance of the Mg/MgH2-Sc2O3/TiO2@Gn system. This study aims to provide insights into studying complex metal oxides as catalysts to improve hydrogen storage performance, and shed light on other catalysis-related research.

Magnesium hydride (MgH 2 ) with excellent hydrogen absorption kinetics is important for the wide application of hydrogen energy. Herein, to accelerate the sorption kinetics of MgH 2 and lower its dehydrogenation temperature, we design and prepare a carbon film coated dual transition metal alloy , the Fe 0.64 Ni 0.36 @C composite with a core-shell structure, and employ it as an additive to synthesize MgH 2 –Fe 0.64 Ni 0.36 @C system by ball-milling and hydriding combustion method. In contrast to pure MgH 2 , the initial hydrogen release temperature of the MgH 2 –Fe 0.64 Ni 0.36 @C composite lowers to 250 °C from 378 °C and the composite can absorb 5.18 wt% H 2 within 20 min (150 °C, 3 MPa H 2 ). More importantly, the apparent activation energy of the dehydrogenation for decomposition of Fe 0.64 Ni 0.36 @C-doped MgH 2 reduced from 162.8 ± 8.3 kJ/mol to 86.9 ± 4.6 kJ/mol. The enhanced hydrogen sorption kinetics of MgH 2 –Fe 0.64 Ni 0.36 @C mainly attributes to the synergistic effect between the formed Fe@C and Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 . Moreover, the MgH 2 co-doped with the multiple in-situ formed active particles shows excellent cycling performance, indicative of potential application in practical hydrogen storage in the near future.

In this study, a MgH 2 –Ru composite is prepared by mechanical ball milling of MgH 2 and Ru powders. The microstructural analysis revealed the uniform distribution of Ru nanoparticles in the MgH 2 matrix and the formation of intermetallic compounds (i.e. Mg 6.2 Ru and Mg 1.5 Ru) after dehydrogenation of the composite. The substantial improvements in the de/hydrogenation properties of MgH 2 are due to the adjustable catalytic role of Ru under low temperature and pressure conditions. MgH 2 –Ru composite started to release hydrogen at an onset temperature of 300 °C, much lower than the mechanically milled pure MgH 2 (350 °C). Hydrogen absorption of the MgH 2 –Ru composite is relatively fast at 350 °C and stored 6.1 wt% in 5 min. At the same temperature, the hydrogenated MgH 2 –Ru composite released all stored hydrogen in less than 5 min. Compared with the catalyst-free MgH 2 , the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation activation energies of the MgH 2 –Ru composite are reduced to 65.12 ± 2.4 kJ/mol H 2 , and 97.46 ± 4.15 kJ/mol H 2 , respectively. In addition, it further demonstrated how the reversible transformation of Mg–Ru intermetallic phases induces the thermodynamic destabilization of the MgH 2 system. The presence of Ru not only facilitated the breaking of the Mg–H bond but also provided very good catalytic interfaces for enhanced de/hydrogenation properties of MgH 2 .
