Synergistic degradation of tetracycline from Mo2C/MoOx films mediated peroxymonosulfate activation and visible-light triggered photocatalysis

Zheng Lian,Ting Wu,Xining Zhang,Shuangfei Cai,Youlin Xiong,Rong Yang

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on photocatalysis and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation have shown potential in antibiotics degradation by generating series of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, construction of AOP materials with easy preparation and high reusability is still a challenge. Herein, we prepared a Mo 2 C/MoO x thin film through one-step chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and this film could synergistically promote PMS activation and visible-light photocatalysis due to the redox cycles of multiple Mo valence states and staggered bandgap structures of Mo-based components in the film. The generated oxygen species (mainly 1 O 2 radical, accompanying by other ones involving OH, SO 4 − and O 2 − radicals) could efficiently degrade the uneasily degradable antibiotics, tetracycline (TC), with a removal efficiency of 91.7 % within 60 min. Meanwhile, the film could maintain the TC degradation capability for at least 10 cycles, exhibiting promising reusability. The work could provide feasible approaches to develop easily prepared AOP thin film materials for antibiotic pollutant degradation.

Construction of hetero-phase Mo2C-CoO@N-CNFs film as a self-supported Bi-functional catalyst towards overall water splitting

Tianyu Gong,Jinyang Zhang,Yang Liu,Linrui Hou,Jianlin Deng,Changzhou Yuan

It is an enormous challenge to develop low-cost non-noble metal bi-functional catalysts toward overall water splitting. The efficient water decomposition electrocatalysts need both intrinsic activities determined by electronic structure and superb mass transfer ability. For this, in the contribution, an efficient self-supported bi-functional catalyst, i.e. , nanoscale hetero Mo 2 C-CoO encapsulated in N -doped carbon nanofibers (Mo 2 C-CoO@ N -CNFs), is designed and fabricated with facile electrospinning avenue. Density functional theory and electrochemical investigation manifest that the synergistic effect of bimetallic Mo/Co accelerates kinetics of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and lowers the energy barrier of oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Thanks to the structural and compositional merits, the optimized integrated Mo 2 C-CoO@ N -CNFs film demonstrates remarkable catalytic activities in both OER and HER, and renders a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at 1.56 V when used for alkaline whole water cracking. The design concept here provides insights for future rational construction of advanced water decomposition catalysts.

In-situ growth of Mo2C on ZIF-8-derived N-doped hierarchical carbon frameworks for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction in acidic and alkaline media

Ketao Wang,Shijie Jiang,Ranjie Zeng,Long Zeng,Yuting Ou,Jieying Lv,Xiaohui Su,Bin Chi,Tiejun Wang,Dai Dang

Constructing self-supporting electrodes with ordered channels is critical to enhancing mass transport and ensuring structural integrity in practical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) applications. Herein, we develop a binder-free self-supporting electrode using freestanding carbonized wood (CW) as a three-dimensional scaffold. ZIF-8 was utilized as a linker for in-situ growth to form CW@ZIF-8 materials. This composite was then impregnated with molybdate salts and subjected to a secondary carbonization process, resulting in the formation of electrically active Mo 2 C nanoparticles within the ordered channels. The resulting Mo 2 C/N–C/CW electrode exhibits excellent HER performance, which requires only 106.5 mV overpotential in alkaline and 130.9 mV in acidic media at 10 mA cm −2 . The enhanced performance is attributed to the hierarchical CW framework, which not only promotes uniform Mo 2 C dispersion but also facilitates electrolyte diffusion. This strategy offers a scalable route toward cost-effective, efficient, and durable self-supporting HER electrodes suitable for both acidic and alkaline environments.

Mo2C Hollow Nanospheres with Co-Nx Sites in N-Doped Carbon Heterostructures as Trifunctional Electrocatalysts for Electrochemical Energy Conversion

Mingzhu Wang,Shuyu Yue,Xingyun Zhao,Yaoyan Wu,Yaohui Zhang,Yaqian Dong,Tiehua Ma

Developing highly efficient and durable trifunctional electrocatalysts is essential for advancing technologies related to water splitting, oxygen reduction, and hydrogen storage, which are critical for energy conversion and storage. In this study, we encapsulated Co-MOFs on the surface of Mo2C hollow spheres and achieved the Co@NC/Mo2C composite material through high-temperature annealing. In the optimal catalyst, Co@NC/Mo2C-0.1, Co@NC nanosheets were uniformly distributed on the Mo2C hollow spheres, and the BET surface area was well maintained. Compared to Co nanoparticles, Co-Nx in Co@NC/Mo2C-0.1 exhibited a greater modulation effect on the electronic structure of Mo2C. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that the Co@NC/Mo2C heterostructure effectively lowered the energy barrier for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) on Mo2C and enhanced the performance of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) through electronic coupling. Specifically, for Co@NC/Mo2C-0.1, at a current density of 10 mA cm–2, the half-wave potential for ORR was 0.86 V, the overpotential for OER was 349 mV, and the overpotential for HER was 158 mV. Additionally, this catalyst exhibited exceptional stability across all three reactions, making it an ideal candidate for sustainable energy technologies.

Effect of K and Ni Promoters on Mo2C/Al2O3 Catalyst for Higher Alcohols Synthesis from Syngas

Yang Zhi,Luo Mingsheng,Liu Qinglong,Li Chenmeng,Wang Yatao,Li Hongjuan,Yao Lifei

Abstract The direct production of higher alcohols from syngas in a single step remains a great challenge. In this work, a series of K and Ni promoted Mo 2 C/Al 2 O 3 catalysts were prepared by impregnation method to enhance the selectivity of Mo 2 C-based catalysts for the one-step conversion of syngas to higher alcohols. The catalysts were continuously tested under the following conditions: 300°C, 3.0 MPa, velocity—11.50 \({\text{Lg}}_{{{\text{Mo}}}}^{{ - 1}}\) h –1 , H 2 /CO ratio of 2. The catalysts promoted with K and Ni demonstrated the highest total alcohol selectivity of 67.7%. Moreover, the selectivity for total C 2+ alcohols reached as high as 56%, with 37% being ethanol. X-ray diffraction (XRD), hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization data reveal that K can promote the crystallinity of β-Mo 2 C, lower the catalyst reduction temperature and increase the proportion of high-valent Mo on the catalyst surface. In addition, adding Ni as a promoter to the KMo 2 C/Al 2 O 3 catalyst can generate a synergistic effect to further enhance the catalytic activity and the selectivity of higher alcohols.

Synthesis of Mo2C@CeO2@Fe3O4 particles for enhancing three-dimensional heterogeneous electro-Fenton degradation of MIT and HEDP

Rao Qian,Li Hui-qiang,Yang Ping,Guo Ziou

Mo 2 C@Fe 3 O 4 and three kinds of MO 2 -doped Mo 2 C@Fe 3 O 4 were successfully fabricated as the Mo 2 C@TiO 2 @Fe 3 O 4 , Mo 2 C@MoO 2 @Fe 3 O 4 and Mo 2 C@CeO 2 @Fe 3 O 4 particles for the degradation of 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 1-hydroxy-1,1-diphosphonoethane in a three-dimensional electro-Fenton system. The catalyst particles showed an enhancement for the catalytic activity in the system. Furthermore, the Mo 2 C@CeO 2 @Fe 3 O 4 particles exhibited superior activity for 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 1-hydroxy-1,1-diphosphonoethane degradation compared to the other two particles. Based on the characterization of the synthesized particles, leaching concentration of Fe 2+ , generation of \({H}_{2}{O}_{2}\) , \(\bullet OH\) , \({O}_{2}^{\bullet -}\) , the reasons for the difference in pollutant degradation performance among the three type particles were comprehensively analyzed. At last, some important experimental parameters, such as particles dosage, current density and aeration intensity, which would obviously affect MIT and HEDP degradation performance were studied. Using the Mo 2 C@CeO 2 @Fe 3 O 4 as catalytic particles, optimal 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 1-hydroxy-1,1-diphosphonoethane degradation rates were 97.2% and 73.8% with 0.5 g of particle dosage, 97.22% and 73.75% with 300 mA of current density, and 97.28% and 73.71% with 0.1 L min −1 of aeration intensity.

Binary molten salt in situ synthesis of sandwich-structure hybrids of hollow β-Mo2C nanotubes and N-doped carbon nanosheets for hydrogen evolution reaction

Tianyu Gong,Yang Liu,Kai Cui,Jiali Xu,Linrui Hou,Haowen Xu,Ruochen Liu,Jianlin Deng,Changzhou Yuan

Focused exploration of earth-abundant and cost-efficient non-noble metal electrocatalysts with superior hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance is very important for large-scale and efficient electrolysis of water. Herein, a sandwich composite structure (designed as MS-Mo 2 C@NCNS) of β- Mo 2 C hollow nanotubes (HNT) and N-doped carbon nanosheets (NCNS) is designed and prepared using a binary NaCl–KCl molten salt (MS) strategy for HER. The temperature-dominant Kirkendall formation mechanism is tentatively proposed for such a three-dimensional hierarchical framework. Due to its attractive structure and componential synergism, MS-Mo 2 C@NCNS exposes more effective active sites, confers robust structural stability, and shows significant electrocatalytic activity/stability in HER, with a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and an overpotential of only 98 mV in 1 M KOH. Density functional theory calculations point to the synergistic effect of Mo 2 C HNT and NCNS, leading to enhanced electronic transport and suitable adsorption free energies of H* (Δ G H* ) on the surface of electroactive Mo 2 C. More significantly, the MS-assisted synthetic methodology here provides an enormous perspective for the commercial development of highly active non-noble metal electrocatalysts toward efficient hydrogen evolution.

Integration of Ni Doping and a Mo2C/MoC Heterojunction for Hydrogen Evolution in Acidic and Alkaline Conditions

Changhai Liu,Lei Sun,Linlin Luo,Wenchang Wang,Huilong Dong,Zhidong Chen

Although nonprecious metal catalysts based on earth-abundant 3d transition metals (TMs) are regarded as promising substitutes for a noble metal electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), their large-scale application is still inhibited by their inadequate activity and durability. Here, a facile method for nonprecious metal catalysts has been developed to prepare molybdenum carbide on nitrogen-doped carbon. By optimizing the Ni doping ratio, the Ni0.5@MoCx/NC exhibits the lowest overpotential for 10 mA cm–2 and superior stability in both acidic and alkaline media for HER application, outperforming most of the reported HER electrocatalysts. In addition, a theoretical simulation has also confirmed the possible mechanism for the synergistic effect with the regulative adsorption energy of hydrogen species with Ni doping and formation of a Mo2C/MoC heterojunction in the Ni0.5@MoCx/NC electrocatalyst. Therefore, this work provides a new avenue for designing two-dimensional nanostructures with an optimized electronic structure for promising TM HER electrocatalysts in a wide pH range.

Dual-phase MoC-Mo2C nanosheets prepared by molten salt electrochemical conversion of CO2 as excellent electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction

Yunfei Chen,Biao Gao,Mingyong Wang,Xiang Xiao,Aijing Lv,Shuqiang Jiao,Paul K. Chu

Dual-phase structures usually have better electrocatalytic activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to synergistic effects . Herein, a novel strategy is proposed to prepare dual-phase MoC-Mo 2 C nanosheets by electro-reduction of CO 2 on the Mo cathode in CaCl 2 -CaO molten salts through an in situ reaction between molybdenum and carbon. The composition of the molybdenum carbide samples can be adjusted by the cell voltage and temperature. As the Mo 2 C contents go up, the HER activity of molybdenum carbide increases initially and then decreases slightly. The dual-phase MoC-Mo 2 C nanosheets prepared at 850 °C and 2.5 V show the best activity due to the hydrogen adsorption-desorption balance. The results reveal an innovative and sustainable strategy to prepare highly efficient HER electrocatalysts and also a green route to recycle and utilize CO 2 .

Encapsulating dual-phased Mo2C-WC nanocrystals into ultrathin carbon nanosheet assemblies for efficient electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Xueting Zhang,Zhenye Zhu,Xiongyi Liang,Fei-Xiang Ma,Jiaheng Zhang,Yuanbo Tan,Zuchen Pan,Yiyang Bo,Chi-Man Lawrence Wu

Mo 2 C and WC are widely considered as promising electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) owing to their Pt-like electronic features. Herein, dual-phased Mo 2 C-WC nanocrystals, densely and uniformly confined in ultrathin carbon nanosheet assemblies (abbreviated as Mo 2 C-WC/NCAs), which are possible candidates for high-performance HER electrocatalysts, are fabricated through the in-situ pyrolysis of polymers containing Mo and W. When evaluated as HER electrocatalysts, Mo 2 C-WC/NCAs requires a small overpotential of ~126 mV to drive a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and low Tafel slopes of 72 mV dec -1 and 59 mV dec -1 in acidic and alkaline media, respectively. In addition, the Mo 2 C-WC/NCAs exhibit robust catalytic stability up to 36 h. The introduction of dual-phased carbide heterostructures can modify the electronic structure and simultaneously facilitate the charge transfer of the catalysts, consistent with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This work highlights the in-situ construction of multi-phased hetero-metal carbide heterostructures for high-performance electrocatalysis.

Ni activated Mo2C nanoparticles supported on stereotaxically-constructed graphene for efficient overall water splitting

Yang Qi Huang,Tao Zhou,Asad Ali,Pei Kang Shen

Exploring cost-effective, high-efficiency and stable electrocatalysts for overall water splitting is greatly desirable and challenging for sustainable energy. Herein, a novel designed Ni activated molybdenum carbide nanoparticle loaded on stereotaxically-constructed graphene (SCG) using two steps facile strategy (hydrothermal and carbonization) as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting. The optimized Ni/Mo 2 C(1:20)-SCG composites exhibit excellent performance with a low overpotential of 150 mV and 330 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively to obtain a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH solution. In addition, when the optimized Ni/Mo 2 C(1:20)-SCG composite is used as a bifunctional electrode for overall water splitting, the electrochemical cell required a low cell voltage of 1.68 V at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and long-term stability of 24 h. More significantly, the synergetic effects between Ni-activated Mo 2 C nanoparticles and SCG are regarded as a significant contributor to accelerate charge transfer and promote electrocatalytic performance in hybrid electrocatalysts. Our works introduce a novel approach to design advanced bifunctional electrodes for overall water splitting.

Ultra-high antioxidant, anti-apoptosis and pro-angiogenesis effect of Mo2C nanosheets for treatment of diabetic wounds

Yaping Ren,Xiaolin Zhou,Xuejiao Gao,Jingjing Si,Wenhui Ren,Caixia Li,Qi Yang,Yunlong Zhou,Feng Bai,Weiwei He

Diabetic wounds are prevalent complications of diabetes and are difficult to heal because of the complicated pathophysiology. Considering the multifactorial pathogenesis and clinical needs, the combined multifunctional therapy represents the efficient solution for diabetic wound healing, and the key is to find suitable agents possessing multiple responses. Here, we present a two-dimensional (2D) ultrathin molybdenum carbide (Mo 2 C) MXene nanosheets (NSs) to accelerate diabetic wound healing by exerting antioxidant, anti-inflammation, anti-apoptosis and pro-angiogenesis functions. The Mo 2 C NSs are characterized by mixed Mo valence, Mo vacancy and abundant unpaired electrons, and abundant surface groups. The unique structures make Mo 2 C NSs can scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) through electron transfer, H atom transfer and enzyme-like catalysis, thus exhibit broad-spectrum and high-efficiency antioxidant capacity, and catalyze oxygen production. The therapeutic efficacy of biologically safe Mo 2 C NSs modified with tannic acid in diabetic wounds has been systematically investigated in cellular and animal models. They can remarkably promote diabetic wound healing by reducing oxidative stress, activating macrophages to polarize toward M2 phenotype, suppressing the inflammatory response, inhibiting apoptosis and accelerating epidermal formation and collagen deposition. This study will facilitate the exploration of multifunctional materials and treatment strategies for diabetic wound healing and ROS/inflammation related multifactorial diseases.
