β-NaYF4:Yb,Er upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) were synthesized by a one-pot solvothermal method. The UCNPs were characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to prove that they possessed hexagonal crystal phase with uniform particle size distribution. The cationic solid lipid nanoparticles (CSLNs) were then obtained by coating the UCNPs with a lipid. Further analysis by FTIR, XRD and TEM indicated the lipid can successfully coat UCNPs, and the coating process had no obvious influences on morphology and crystallization of the UCNPs. Furthermore, the CSLNs were used for bioimaging in cells and delivering small interfering RNA (siRNA). Cellular bioimaging and upconversion luminescence studies clearly demonstrated that the CSLNs could effectively enter into cells with the help of the lipid. Silencing assays and cytotoxicity in A549 cells convincingly showed that the CSLNs could effectively deliver siRNA and possessed low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility. Thus, the bifunctional CSLNs could be used as a potential candidate in bioimaging and therapeutic applications.

In this work, novel ternary composite ZIF-67/Ag NPs/NaYF 4 :Yb,Er is synthesized by solvothermal method. The photocatalytic activity of the composite is evaluated by sulfadiazine (SDZ) degradation under simulated sunlight. High elimination efficiency of the composite is 95.4% in 180 min with good reusability and stability. The active species (h + , ·O 2 − and ·OH) are identified. The attack sites and degradation process of SDZ are deeply investigated based on theoretical calculation and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. The upconversion mechanism study shows that favorable photocatalytic effectiveness is attributed to the full utilization of sunlight through the energy transfer upconversion process and fluorescence resonance energy transfer. Additionally, the composite is endowed with outstanding light-absorbing qualities and effective photogenerated electron–hole pair separation thanks to the localized surface plasmon resonance effect of Ag nanoparticles. This work can motivate further design of novel photocatalysts with upconversion luminescence performance, which are applied to the removal of sulphonamide antibiotics in the environment.

Rare earth-doped upconversion nanoparticles have promising potential in the field of pesticide detection because of their unique frequency upconverting capability and high detection sensitivity. This paper reports a novel aptamer-based nanosensor for acetamiprid detection using fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between NH 2 -NaYF 4 : Yb, [email protected] 2 (UCNPs) and gold nanoparticles (GNPs). Herein, GNPs as acceptors efficiently quench the fluorescence of UCNPs and acetamiprid specifically interacts with acetamiprid binding aptamer (ABA), causing the conformation changes of ABA from random coil to hairpin structure. Accordingly, ABA no longer stabilizes the GNPs in salt solution, leading to the varying aggregation extent of GNPs. Thus, the fluorescence of UCNPs are proportionally recovered. Under the optimized conditions, the enhancement efficiency was observed to increase linearly with the concentration of acetamiprid from 50 nM to 1000 nM, resulting in a relatively low limit of 3.2 nM. Additionally, the aptasensor demonstrated high selectivity to similar structure pesticides such as imidacloprid and chlorpyrifos , and further confirmed its application capacity in adulterated tea samples.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2; as a potential photosensitizer) has good photocurrent performance and chemical stability but often exhibits low utilization efficiency under ultraviolet (UV) region excitation. Herein, we devised a near-infrared light-to-UV light-mediated photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensing platform for the sensitive detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) based on core–shell NaYF4:Yb,Tm@TiO2 upconversion microrods by coupling with target-triggered rolling circle amplification (RCA). The upconversion microrods synthesized through the hydrothermal reaction could act as a photosensing platform to convert the near-infrared (near-IR) excitation into UV emission for generation of photoinduced electrons. The target analyte was determined on a functional magnetic bead by using the corresponding aptamers with a sandwich-type assay format. Upon target CEA introduction, a complex was first formed between capture aptamer-1-conjugated magnetic bead (Apt1-MB) and aptamer-2-primer DNA (Apt2-pDNA). Thereafter, the carried primer DNA by the aptamer-2 paired with linear padlock DNA to trigger the RCA reaction. The guanine (G)-rich product by RCA reaction was cleaved by exonuclease I and exonuclease III (Exos I/III), thereby resulting in the formation of numerous individual guanine bases to enhance the photocurrent of core–shell NaYF4:Yb,Tm@TiO2 upconversion microrods under near-IR illumination (980 nm). Under optimal conditions, the near-IR light-mediated PEC aptasensing system could exhibit good photoelectrochemical response toward target CEA and allowed for the detection of target CEA as low as 3.6 pg mL–1. High reproducibility and good accuracy were achieved for analysis of human serum specimens. Importantly, the near-IR-activated PEC aptasensing scheme provides a promising platform for ultrasensitive detection of other biomolecules.

A highly sensitive luminescent bioassay for the detection of Salmonella typhimurium was fabricated using Mn 2 + -doped NaYF 4 :Yb,Tm upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) as the donor and gold nanorods (Au NRs) as the acceptor and utilizing an energy transfer (LET) system. Mn 2 + -doped NaYF 4 :Yb,Tm UCNPs with a strong emission peak at 807 nm were obtained by changing the doped ion ratio. Carboxyl-terminated Mn 2 + -doped NaYF 4 :Yb,Tm UCNPs were coupled with S. typhimurium aptamers, which were employed to capture and concentrate S. typhimurium . The electrostatic interactions shorten the distance between the negatively charged donor and the positively charged acceptor, which results in luminescence quenching . The added S. typhimurium leads to the restoration of luminescence due to the formation of UCNPs-aptamers- S. typhimurium , which repels the UCNPs-aptamers from the Au NRs. The LET system does not occur because of the nonexistence of the luminescence emission band of Mn 2 + -doped NaYF 4 :Yb,Tm UCNPs, which had large spectral overlap with the absorption band of Au NRs. Under optimal conditions, the linear range of detecting S. typhimurium was 12 to 5 × 10 5 cfu/mL (R = 0.99). The limit of detection for S. typhimurium was as low as 11 cfu/mL in an aqueous buffer. The measurement of S. typhimurium in milk samples was satisfied in accordance with the plate-counting method, suggesting that the proposed method was of practical value in the application of food security.

An upconversion luminescence method was developed for the determination of glutathione (GSH), L -cysteine (Cys) or L -ascorbic acid (AA) based on redox reaction . We synthesized poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)-modified Mn 2+ -doped NaYF 4 :Yb,Tm upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), and the luminescence of these UCNPs was effectively quenched due to their carboxyl groups coordinating with Fe 3+ to form a UCNPs/Fe 3+ system. GSH, Cys or AA reduced Fe 3+ to Fe 2+ , which induced the luminescence recovery of the UCNPs. Under the optimized conditions, wide linear concentration ranges from 0.25-300 μM for GSH, 0.5–875 μM for Cys and 0.5–350 μM for AA were found, and the detection limits (3 S/K) were 0.2 μM, 0.5 μM and 0.2 μM, respectively. Thus, the UCNPs/Fe 3+ system was successfully applied for sensing GSH, Cys or AA.

Photosensitizer-mediated photodynamic therapy (PDT) enables wireless tumor inactivation by releasing cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS). Nevertheless, the activation of conventional photosensitizers typically depends on visible light with limited tissue penetration, thereby restricting their therapeutic efficacy in deep-seated tumors. To overcome this limitation, an upconversion implant was engineered to function as a flexible internal light-emitting device by converting deeply penetrating near-infrared-I (NIR-I) light into visible light. Specifically, a composite PDT nanosystem was constructed by linking NaYF 4 :Yb,Er upconversion nanoparticles with the rose bengal photosensitizer—whose emission and absorption spectra are well-matched—using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a molecular bridge. This PDT nanosystem was subsequently incorporated into poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) scaffolds fabricated via selective laser sintering. Under 980 nm laser irradiation, the upconversion implant was capable of wirelessly emitting upconverted visible light through more than 2 cm of an in vitro tissue model and generating abundant ROS via the photodynamic effect. In vitro cell experiments demonstrated that the system effectively eliminated tumor cells by damaging the cell membrane and cellular genetic material. These results suggest that the scaffolds possess significant potential as anti-tumor tissue implants and offer a promising avenue for the development of innovative tumor treatment strategies.

As for the solution-processed MAPbI 3 film, the pinholes and gaps are an inevitable and undesirable phenomenon, which can usually lead to serious interface charge recombination due to the penetration of hole transport materials in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, a hydrophobic β-NaYF 4 :Yb,Er up-conversion ultrathin layer with particle size ca. 6 nm was first applied to modify the MAPbI 3 film for optimizing the surface of perovskite film. Thereby, the corresponding PSCs yield a significantly enhanced power conversion efficiency of 15.17% compared with that (13.32%) of the pristine PSCs. Furthermore, the PSCs also have a good stability in air atmosphere (relative humidity ≤45%) because of the introduction of this hydrophobic material. After a series of detailed investigations and comparison, it can be easily concluded that the filled pinholes and gaps in perovskite films via β-NaYF 4 :Yb,Er nanoparticles is the main reason for the performance enhancement of the β-NaYF 4 :Yb,Er based PSCs, which can result in an enhanced hole extraction efficiency and reduced interface charge recombination. As a conclusion, it is a feasible and effective approach for improving the photovoltaic performance of PSCs by filling up the pinholes and gaps in perovskite films with up-conversion ultrathin layers.

In this paper, a novel ratiometric fluorescence probe for melamine detection based on luminescence resonance energy transfer (LRET) between the NaYF 4 :Yb, Er upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was developed. The detection mechanism could be interpreted to the AuNPs quenched the fluorescence intensity (F 542 and F 654 ) of the UCNPs under 980 nm excitation. after melamine addition, the fluorescence intensity of the UCNPs was recovered due to the aggregation of Au NPs. A good linear relationship between the ratio of F 542 to F 654 nm (F 542 /F 654 ) was obtained in ranges of 20-200 μg/L of the melamine concentration and the limit of detection was 8.8 nM. Besides, The probe exhibited an excellent selectivity and good sensitivity to melamine, and achieved the melamine detection in real sample. This work paved a new avenue for the potential practice application for commercial instantaneous determination of the melamine.

High-efficiency detection of cadmium ions (Cd2+) and mercury ions (Hg2+) is crucial due to their harmful effects on the environment and human health. Here, we developed a ratiometric upconversion fluorescence (UCF)-based nanosensor by incorporating lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and gold nanoparticles modified with trithiocyanuric acid (TMT-AuNPs) as specific recognition elements for the highly sensitive and selective real-time detection of Cd2+ and Hg2+. The developed nanosensor exhibited selective absorbance enhancement and UCF quenching behavior with the addition of Cd2+ and Hg2+ based on the inner filter effect (IFE). The sensitivity of the nanosensor was significantly enhanced by converting the change in absorbance into an exponential variation in UCF intensity. Therefore, the quantitative detection of Cd2+ and Hg2+ was achieved by measuring the UCF ratio I654/I540. In order to distinguish between Cd2+ and Hg2+, two biomolecules, glutathione (GSH) and ascorbic acid (AA), were used based on their different interactions with Cd2+ and Hg2+. GSH formed a specific tetrahedral complex (GSH)4Cd with Cd2+, thereby preventing Cd2+ from inducing changes in UCF intensity. In contrast, AA specifically reduced Hg2+, thereby preventing Hg2+-induced UCF changes. Thus, GSH and AA could also be detected. The limits of detection (LODs) of Cd2+, Hg2+, GSH, and AA were 2.8, 5.2, 5.1, and 7.2 nM, respectively. The designed detection platform provides a sensitive and straightforward sensing strategy for the multiplex detection of heavy metal ions and biological small molecules.

Dual-functional nanosensors based on small molecule regulation can be widely used due to their simplicity, high sensitivity and selectivity. Herein, glutathione (GSH) calibrated dual-functional system for GSH and cadmium ions (Cd 2+ ) detection based on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between NH 2 –NaYF 4 :Yb,Er/NaYF 4 @SiO 2 upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) is designed. Unmodified AuNPs are easy to aggregate in high-salt solution and thereby quenching the red emission of UCNPs. The presence of GSH prevents the aggregation of AuNPs, so GSH can be detected by the changes in the color of solution and the recovery of red emission of UCNPs. However, Cd 2+ can interact with GSH, which makes AuNPs easy to aggregate, resulting in a gradual decrease in red emission of UCNPs. The fluorescence response of the system is linear with the concentrations of GSH and Cd 2+ in a wide range of concentrations, with low detection limits of 0.016 μM and 0.059 μM, respectively. Furthermore, the nanosensor demonstrates high selectivity for GSH and Cd 2+ detection and can be applied for the detection of GSH in human plasma and Cd 2+ in drinking water .

Introducing upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) or fabricating TiO 2 hollow spheres (TiO 2 -HSs) are considered two feasible strategies to enhance the photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). However, studies investigating a combination of UCNPs and TiO 2 -HSs for the application in DSSCs are still scarce. In this contribution, NaYF 4 :Yb,Er@NaGdF 4 :Nd@SiO 2 UCNPs and TiO 2 -HSs were synthesized and respectively applied as upconversion layers and scattering layers on the TiO 2 photoanode of DSSCs. The influence of different doping ratios of UCNPs on cell performance was explored. The present results reveal that the DSSCs device based on conventional P25 photoanode films incorporating the UCNPs with 10% can achieve a photovoltaic efficiency of 6.65%, showing 29.63% enhancement in comparison to the device without UCNPs. When the TiO 2 -HSs are used as scattering layers above the P25 film, the DSSCs device obtains a higher photovoltaic efficiency of 6.97%. More importantly, combining the UCNPs and TiO 2 -HSs can further enhance the photoelectrical property of DSSCs, realizing an optimal efficiency of 8.17%. Such an improvement can be attributed to a synergistic mechanism arising from the upconversion effect of UCNPs and the light scattering effect of TiO 2 -HSs. This work opens a new way of preparing composite photoanode films to improve the photovoltaic performances of DSSCs.
