Interfacial microenvironment modulation enhancing catalytic kinetics of CoNiP@NiFe LDH heterostructures for highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Jie Zhang,Donggang Guo

The development of highly active and robust OER catalysts is the key to address the constraints on the efficiency of electrocatalytic water splitting technology. Herein, CoNi-pristine was synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method, further phosphorylation treatment and construction of heterojunctions to synthesize efficient oxygen evolution catalysts. The OER catalytic performance of the material was greatly enhanced by the advantages of proper self-supporting 3D morphology, formation of heterogeneous interfaces and the synergistic effect of CoNiP and NiFe LDH. In 1 M KOH, CoNiP@NiFe LDH/NF only requires an overpotential of 207 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and operates at high current densities for more than 120 h without significant decay. It provides assistance for the rational design of interface-engineered heterostructures based on the synthesis of OER catalysts with high catalytic activity.

NiFe-LDH enhanced water-steam pyrolysis of kerogen: unveiling steam-catalytic interplay and multi-scale reaction dynamics

Tianbao Liu,Weiguang Shi,Wei Li,Benxian Li,Xiaofei Fu,Zhiyong Chang,Sunhua Deng

Low to medium maturity shale oil, an essential energy source, faces challenges due to traditional pyrolysis methods, which are characterized by high energy consumption, low yield, and poor selectivity. Moreover, the inefficiencies in in-situ heat injection underscore the necessity for effective catalysts and improved heat transfer mechanisms involving water vapor. This study aims to elucidate the heat transfer enhancement and catalytic synergy of NiFe-layered double hydroxides (NiFe-LDH) in improving the in-situ pyrolysis efficiency of medium–low maturity oil shale via steam pyrolysis. Analyses conducted using GC–MS, Raman spectroscopy, and 13 C NMR demonstrated that the incorporation of NiFe-LDH with water vapor significantly enhances kerogen pyrolysis. This process increases the yields of alcohols, alkanes, and olefins by 1.32, 1.21, and 1.81 times, respectively, and it reduces the temperature needed to produce oil from kerogen. The catalyst helps turn aromatics into alcohols, olefins, and alkanes while breaking down residues into short-chain alkanes. It does this by weakening C–H bonds and removing hydrogen from methyl groups, ultimately reducing the energy required for heat injection by 38.17 %. Thermal and kinetic studies reveal that NiFe-LDH increases kerogen thermal diffusivity by 75.5 % and decreases specific heat capacity by 28.1 %, while elucidating the kinetic mechanism for a 59 °C elevation in the initial temperature of the main pyrolysis stage (increasing 6.1 times prefactor). A nucleation-reaction-order-geometric contraction multi-mechanism coupling model is established. This work proposes a novel “catalyst-water vapor pyrolysis-kerogen oxidation” synergistic enhancement theory, refining the multi-scale coupling mechanisms of heat/mass/chemical reactions during in-situ oil shale pyrolysis.

Preparation and microwave absorption properties of MWCNTs/RGO/NiFe-LDH three-dimensional composites with varying metal ratios

Guoxin Ding,Xiangxiang Chen,Yuexiang Hu,Yan Liu,Jun Liu,Guojun Cheng

The design of the material structure significantly influences microwave absorption properties. Enhancing electromagnetic performance requires the creation of diverse and heterogeneous interfaces to promote extensive wave reflections. This study developed 3D composites with point (NiFe-LDH), line (multi-walled carbon nanotubes, MWCNTs), and surface (reduced graphene oxide, RGO) architectures using ultrasonic stirring and a hydrothermal process, aiming to achieve improved electromagnetic properties. At a Ni:Fe ratio of 3:1, MWCNTs are interspersed within the layers of reduced RGO, forming a distinctive three-dimensional network structure. Additionally, on the MWCNTs/RGO composite's surface, NiFe-LDH flakes grow uniformly. The resulting composite exhibits an effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 5.2 GHz and a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −57.93 dB at a thickness of 1.64 mm. Furthermore, a thickness of 1.70 mm achieves a maximum EAB of 6.88 GHz. These results demonstrate that the MWCNTs/RGO/NiFe-LDH composite provides a broad microwave absorption bandwidth and high absorption efficiency, making it a promising candidate for developing advanced materials for microwave absorption applications.

Interfacial electronic modulation and coupling of NiFe LDH via α-Co(OH)2 for enhanced oxygen evolution

Mengke Li,Yang Yang,Yajie Zhang,XinZhuo Liu,Yulan Li,Xiaobin Niu

NiFe-layered double hydroxides (NiFe LDHs) are regarded as outstanding electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but the inherent charge transport limitations hinder their practical application. Herein, we developed a 3D hierarchical α-Co(OH) 2 /NiFe LDH/NF composite catalyst via a simple electrodeposition-hydrothermal method. The introduction of α-Co(OH) 2 enables interfacial electron modulation with NiFe LDH, driving electron transfer from Ni/Co sites to Fe centers via multi-pathway coupling channels (Ni–O–Fe, Ni–O–Co, Co–O–Fe). This electron redistribution creates an optimized coordination environment that promotes the formation of high-valence Ni and Co species, subsequently facilitating the in situ formation of highly active phases (γ-NiFeOOH and CoOOH) during the OER process. The derived γ-NiFeOOH provides superior intrinsic activity, while the coexisting. CoOOH significantly enhances charge transport due to its high electronic conductivity. As a result, the composite achieves an overpotential of only 285 mV at a current density of 500 mA cm −2 , outperforming both NiFe LDH (372 mV) and α-Co(OH) 2 (441 mV). Additionally, this catalyst shows an excellent long-term stability at 100 mA cm −2 for 120 h. This work demonstrates that interfacial electronic modulation offers a strategy for designing efficient and durable OER catalysts capable of operating at industrial current densities.

Tailoring NiFe LDH with ruthenium doping for high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysis in conventional and environmental water splitting systems

Jiarun Cheng,Chaojie Lyu,Jiaxin Yang,Senlong Zhang,Xueyan Li,Dan Zhang,Yiming Liu

Electrochemical water electrolysis stands as a viable route for hydrogen energy, yet its large-scale industrial deployment is hindered by the slow reaction kinetics of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the reliance on scarce noble metal catalysts. Herein, we present ruthenium-doped nickel–iron layered double hydroxide nanosheet arrays supported on nickel foam (Ru-NiFe LDH/NF) as a high-performance bifunctional electrocatalyst. The doping strategy realizes dual optimization through atomic-level electronic interactions: the electronegativity difference between Ru, Ni and Fe induces charge transfer, precisely regulating the free energy of OER intermediates adsorbed on Ni active sites while increasing oxygen vacancies; concurrently, Ru atoms themselves act as high-activity hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) sites, constructing a bifunctional structure of Ni&Ru active sites. In 1 M KOH, it necessitates overpotentials of just 249 mV for OER and 93 mV for HER at 10 mA cm −2 . The overall water splitting (OWS) system requires a total cell voltage of merely 1.57 V with Faraday efficiency close to 100% and exceptional stability. Furthermore, by replacing OER with the sulfide oxidation reaction (SOR), the cell voltage for OWS at 100 mA cm −2 decreases from 1.82 V to 1.52 V, achieving low-energy-consumption “sulfur-hydrogen” co-production. Impressively, the catalyst also maintains superior catalytic activity and prolonged stability in real seawater and even sulfide-containing seawater, demonstrating its immense prospect for practical-scale applications. This study presents a novel strategy to fabricate bifunctional catalysts and offers detailed experimental data for the coordinated development of low-energy-consumption hydrogen generation coupled with resource utilization of complex water bodies.

Ti-doped NiFe-LDH nanosheets with tailored surface electronic structure for enhanced seawater splitting via lattice oxygen mechanism

Yaru Wen,Jihao Liu,Yuxin Tang,Junjie Wang,Qianqian Dong,Yuhao Li,Baoning Zhu,Yiming Liu,Jinghua Liu,Xiong He,Yao Lu

A Ti 4+ -doped NiFe-LDH was employed as an electrocatalyst. • It requires overpotentials of 243 and 263 mV at 50 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH and seawater. • Ti 4+ doping modulates the LDH electronic structure, activating the lattice oxygen mechanism. • This modulation significantly improves both electrocatalytic activity and long-term stability. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is kinetically sluggish and unstable, severely limiting its efficiency in water electrolysis, particularly in seawater. Here, we report the growth of Ti-doped NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets on nickel foam (NF) via a one-step hydrothermal synthesis. The introduction of high-valent Ti 4+ cations effectively modulates the local electronic configuration of the NiFe-LDH host, thereby tending to promote the lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) and fundamentally accelerate the OER kinetics. Consequently, the optimal Ti 0.1 NiFe-LDH/NF catalyst exhibits an overpotential of only 243 mV at 50 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH, with a Tafel slope of 63.4 mV dec −1 . Importantly, it demonstrates exceptional operational durability, maintaining a current density of 50 mA cm −2 for more than 100 h with a minimal potential increase of just 7 mV. In alkaline seawater, the Ti-doped catalyst shows superior activity and corrosion resistance relative to its undoped counterpart, underscoring its potential for direct seawater electrolysis. This study elucidates the critical role of cation doping in activating the LOM pathway through optimization of the electronic configuration, and offers an effective strategy for developing high-performance and highly stable OER electrocatalysts for both freshwater and seawater splitting. In-situ growth of NiFe-LDH/CuO nanorod-sheet heterostructure for oxygen evolution reaction and urea oxidation reaction

Xiaoyun Zhang,Ying Cui,Tao Qin,Muxin Liu,Jinlong Ge

The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) impede the development of water splitting for hydrogen production. Replacing the anodic oxygen evolution reaction by urea oxidation reaction (UOR) can reduce the thermodynamic equilibrium potential and improve the hydrogen production efficiency. In this work, a NiFe-LDH/CuO heterostructure was constructed via a two-step electrochemical deposition process for both OER and UOR. The nanorod-sheet NiFe-LDH/CuO showed fast electron transfer rate for the CuO nanorod and exposed more active sites for the NiFe-LDH nanosheet. The electron redistribution and d -band center optimization induced by the heterostructure of NiFe-LDH/CuO as revealed by DFT calculation. The synthesized heterostructure catalyst only required overpotential of 238 mV for OER and potential of 1.231 V for UOR, respectively.

Interfacial chemical bonding in 2D/2D NiFe-LDH/C3N4 Z-type heterojunction for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics

Ruoyun Gao,Zhinan Xia,Pengfei Li,Ruijuan Bian,Nianbo Zhang,Jingping Lu,Chunhuang Fan,Lifei Liu,Yang Deng

This study addressed the critical need for antibiotic pollution control in industrial wastewater by successfully constructing a two-dimensional/two-dimensional NiFe-LDH/C 3 N 4 Z-type heterojunction photocatalyst with strong chemical bonding through an innovative interfacial chemical engineering strategy. Thermal activation was used to expose N active sites on the C 3 N 4 surface, and in-situ growth of NiFe-LDH nanosheets was achieved via co-precipitation. Stable Ni-N and Fe-N coordination bonds were constructed at the heterojunction interface, forming an efficient interfacial charge transport channel that significantly suppressed the recombination of photogenerated carriers. Material characterization showed that the catalyst possessed a broadened visible light response, enhanced specific surface area, and optimized charge separation efficiency. Photocatalytic experiments demonstrated excellent degradation performance for fluoroquinolone antibiotics such as norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and ofloxacin. Norfloxacin achieved a 90% removal rate within 120 minutes, with good cycling stability. Mechanistic studies revealed that the degradation process is primarily driven by superoxide radicals (·O 2 - ). This work not only proposed a novel method for constructing heterostructures through "surface active site design and in-situ interface bonding", but also experimentally revealed the key role of interfacial chemical bonding in regulating band structure, promoting charge separation and enhancing material stability, providing important theoretical and practical basis for the rational design of efficient and stable photocatalytic materials under the guidance of surface and interface science.

NiS2/NiFe LDH/g-C3N4 ternary heterostructure-based label-free photoelectrochemical aptasensing for highly sensitive determination of enrofloxacin

Y. Chen,M. Yang,Y. Jia,P. Yan,F. Chen,J. Qian,L. Xu,H. Li

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) aptasensor based on photoactive species with remarkable and stable PEC response is a rising analytical method to implement highly efficient and sensitive detection of residual antibiotics in the field of food. Herein, NiS 2 /NiFe-layered double/graphitic carbon nitride (NiS 2 /NiFe LDH/g-C 3 N 4 ) ternary heterostructure designed by the surface vulcanization of flower-like NiFe LDH/g-C 3 N 4 was used for developing a label-free PEC aptasensing platform to detect enrofloxacin (ENR). The introduction of NiS 2 with narrow bandgap can strengthen the light harvesting of solar energy, producing large amounts of photoinduced carriers. NiS 2 as the electrons conduction bridge further accelerates the transmission efficiency of electrons in contrast to binary heterojunction, endowing ternary heterostructure with superior photocurrent signal. A label-free PEC aptasensor detected ENR with an amplified detection signal because of the oxidation of ENR molecules by photoinduced holes. This PEC aptasensing platform of ENR manifested a wide detection range from 3.6 × 10 −7 to 30 ng/mL with a low detection limit of 1.2 × 10 −7  ng/mL as well as can provide a sensitive and stable analysis with feasible application to monitor milk and honey samples. This design can open the utilization of ternary heterostructure by surface vulcanization to improve the sensitivity of PEC aptasensing platform for monitoring environmental pollutants.

Constructing Hierarchical Fluffy CoO–Co4N@NiFe-LDH Nanorod Arrays for Highly Effective Overall Water Splitting and Urea Electrolysis

Baojin Chen,Muhammad Humayun,Yadong Li,Huaming Zhang,Huachuan Sun,Ying Wu,Chundong Wang

Exploration of highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for optimal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has been widely carried out, though it still remains a big challenge. Herein, a hierarchical CoO–Co4N@NiFe-LDH (layered-double-hydroxides) heterostructure electrode anchored on nickel foam (NF) is prepared via a developed three-step hydrothermal–nitridation–electrodeposition pathway. The fabricated CoO–Co4N@NiFe-LDH/NF electrode needs low overpotential values of 66 and 231 mV to supply a current density value of 10 mA cm–2 in aqueous solution of KOH (1 M) for HER and OER, respectively. The Tafel slopes and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results display favorable reaction kinetics throughout the electrolysis process. Subsequently, an alkaline electrolyzer is assembled with CoO–Co4N@NiFe-LDH/NF, which serves both as the anode and cathode, yielding 10 mA cm–2 with a small voltage of 1.529 V and showing a robust stability for 28 h. Impressively, a urine-mediated electrolysis cell shows efficient catalytic activity as well, allowing to mount the sluggish OER during water splitting. To drive the urine-mediated electrolysis cell containing 0.33 M urea, a low voltage of 1.393 V is required, which is about 136 mV lower compared to the urea-free electrolysis cell. This work presents a solid step for the electrocatalytic generation of hydrogen through water splitting by harvesting low energy.

Hydrothermal combined with electrodeposition construction of a stable Co9S8/Ni3S2@NiFe-LDH heterostructure electrocatalyst for overall water splitting

Fu Liu,Xingzhong Guo,Yang Hou,Fan Wang,Chang Zou,Hui Yang

Electrochemical water splitting provides a prominent route towards clean energy conversion and storage, while unsuitable catalysts restrict its application. Core–shell hierarchical heterostructure materials with strong synergistic effects based on non-noble metal elements have been developed to compensate for inadequacy. In this work, a core–shell hierarchical heterostructure Co9S8/Ni3S2@NiFe-LDH electrocatalyst was prepared via hydrothermal and electrodeposition methods. The resultant Co9S8/Ni3S2@NiFe-120 electrocatalyst consists of Co9S8 substrates as the core and NiFe-LDHs as the shell, and exhibits excellent overall water splitting electrocatalytic activity with a low overpotential of 229 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and 151 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and a full cell voltage of 1.62 V at 10 mA cm−2 current density. The core–shell heterostructure constructed by electrodeposition endows the catalyst with outstanding stability and low degradation in long-term catalytic processes as shown by continuous chronopotentiometry tests at current densities of 50, 100 and 200 mA cm−2 for 72 h. The as-prepared core–shell hierarchically heterostructural Co9S8/Ni3S2@NiFe-120 with high-efficiency and good-durability is a promising bifunctional electrocatalyst towards practical applications in overall water splitting.

Construction of hierarchical NiFe-LDH/FeCoS2/CFC composites as efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction

Zhang Zewu,Zhou Jiamin,Wei Hanlin,Dai Yifan,Li Shijia,Shi Haojun,Xu Gang

Abstract Efficient design and preparation of cost-effective and binder-free bifunctional electrocatalysts to accelerate the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction (HER and OER) are critical for overall water splitting. In this work, 3D hierarchical NiFe-LDH/FeCoS 2 /CFC electrodes were synthesized for the first time. The carboxyl groups derived from acid treating promote the homogeneously coated FeCoS 2 on CFC, giving rise to the strongly coupled FeCoS 2 /CFC hybrid. The NiFe-LDH exhibited the vertical growth feature on the FeCoS 2 /CFC composite, which can efficiently expose the active edges sites. Due to unique structure and synergistic effect between the components, the NiFe-LDH/FeCoS 2 /CFC exhibits significant electrocatalytic activity and stability under alkaline environments, with overpotentials of 190 and 308 mV to achieve 10 mA cm −2 for OER and HER, respectively, providing it as a promising electrocatalyst for water splitting reaction. In addition, we deeply studied the synergistic catalytic mechanism of NiFe-LDH/FeCoS 2 /CFC, explaining the reasons leading to the improved catalytic performance of HER and OER. Graphic abstract
