In Situ Fabrication of Mn-Doped NiMoO4 Rod-like Arrays as High Performance OER Electrocatalyst

Shiming Yang,Santosh K. Tiwari,Zhiqi Zhu,Dehua Cao,Huan He,Yu Chen,Kunyapat Thummavichai,Nannan Wang,Mingjie Jiang,Yanqiu Zhu

The slow kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is one of the significant reasons limiting the development of electrochemical hydrolysis. Doping metallic elements and building layered structures have been considered effective strategies for improving the electrocatalytic performance of the materials. Herein, we report flower-like nanosheet arrays of Mn-doped-NiMoO4/NF (where NF is nickel foam) on nickel foam by a two-step hydrothermal method and a one-step calcination method. The doping manganese metal ion not only modulated the morphologies of the nickel nanosheet but also altered the electronic structure of the nickel center, which could be the result of superior electrocatalytic performance. The Mn-doped-NiMoO4/NF electrocatalysts obtained at the optimum reaction time and the optimum Mn doping showed excellent OER activity, requiring overpotentials of 236 mV and 309 mV to drive 10 mA cm−2(62 mV lower than the pure NiMoO4/NF) and 50 mA cm−2current densities, respectively. Furthermore, the high catalytic activity was maintained after continuous operation at a current density of 10 mA cm−2of 76 h in 1 M KOH. This work provides a new method to construct a high-efficiency, low-cost, stable transition metal electrocatalyst for OER electrocatalysts by using a heteroatom doping strategy.Keywords:OER;Mn-doped;transition metal electrocatalyst;nanosheet

Enhancing hydrogen storage properties of MgH2 through addition of Ni/CoMoO4 nanorods

T. Huang,X. Huang,C. Hu,J. Wang,H. Liu,Z. Ma,J. Zou,W. Ding

In this work, one-dimensional NiMoO 4 and CoMoO 4 nanorods are prepared and introduced into MgH 2 to improve its hydrogen storage properties. It is observed that the MgH 2 –NiMoO 4 system exhibits lower dehydrogenation temperature and faster kinetics than the MgH 2 –CoMoO 4 system and pure MgH 2 , indicating the superior promoting effect of NiMoO 4 over CoMoO 4 . Concretely, NiMoO 4 reacts with MgH 2 during the first dehydrogenation to in situ form Mg 2 Ni and Mo 0 , both of which are crucial factors for the following hydrogen cycling process. The ‘Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 ’ mutual transformation upon hydrogen release/uptake is the well-known ‘hydrogen pump’ effect which boosts the hydrogen storage performance of MgH 2 . Moreover, theoretical calculations reveal the dual roles of Mo 0 played for the hydrogen storage in MgH 2 : i) it accelerates the hydrogen de/absorption of MgH 2 through weakening the Mg–H bonding; ii) it facilitates the mutual ‘Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 ’ transformation as the formation energy of Mg 2 NiH 4 decreases under the influence of Mo 0 , which we call ‘facilitated hydrogen pump’ effect in this work. Ascribing to the collaborative action between Ni- and Mo- containing species, the hydrogen storage kinetics of MgH 2 has been accelerated.

Nickel–Cobalt-Layered Double Hydroxide Nanosheets Supported on NiMoO4 Nanorods with Enhanced Stability for Asymmetric Supercapacitors

Shuzhen Cui,Qinzheng Hu,Kanjun Sun,Xin Wang,Faqiang Wang,Hamouda Adam Hamouda,Hui Peng,Guofu Ma

Nickel molybdate (NiMoO4) is a typical pseudocapacitance material with high specific capacity. However, its inherent shortcomings of poor electrical conductivity and unstable structure caused by hindered migration of electrons and local aggregation of charges/ions seriously affect its energy-storage performance. Herein, using NiMoO4 nanorods as the nucleation matrix, a hydrothermal approach was used to fabricate NiMoO4/NiCo-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanocomposites. The NiCo-LDH nanosheets uniformly grown on NiMoO4 nanorods not only provided a facile electron transfer channel and abundant redox active sites but also its interwoven nanosheet shell can retard the volume change and result in irreversible dissolution of the NiMoO4 core during the charge/discharge process. Therefore, the NiMoO4/NiCo-LDH nanocomposite possesses a high specific capacity (153.7 mAh g–1 at 1 A g–1) and enhanced cyclic stability. Furthermore, the NiMoO4/NiCo-LDH nanocomposite is utilized as a positive electrode of an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC). The NiMoO4/NiCo-LDH//activated horsetall tree-based carbon (AHTC) ASC achieves a high energy density of 40.3 Wh kg–1 at 425.5 W kg–1, as well as excellent cycle performance. The synergistic effect of nanocomposites between the various metal compounds with integrated architectures provides unique insights into the development of nanocomposites for energy-storage devices.

Electrochemical measurement of fleroxacin using a NiMoO4 micro-rods/carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotube composite sensor

Yuan Jin,Junyuan Song,Nanke Ma,Guangli Li

NiMoO 4 micro-rods/MWCNT-COOH composite first applied for FLX detection. • Low LOD (0.012 μM), wide range (0.05–20  μM), high sensitivity (μA μM −1 ). • Enrichment via electrostatic attraction, H-bonding, and π‑π stacking (adsorption-controlled). • Good anti-interference, 82% stability over 30 days, recoveries 94–104% in real samples. • Structural and functional complementarity (conductivity + catalysis) of the composite. Fleroxacin (FLX), a commonly utilized fluoroquinolone antibiotic, has been identified as a significant environmental and human health hazard due to its presence and accumulation in the environment. In this study, an electrochemical sensor employing a NiMoO 4 /MWCNT-COOH composite material was devised for the highly selective and highly sensitive detection of FLX in environmental water samples. The nickel molybdate microrod/carboxylated multiwalled carbon nanotube composites (NiMoO 4 /MWCNT COOH) synergistically combines the catalytic properties of NiMoO 4 with the exceptional conductivity and dispersibility of MWCNT-COOH, thereby enhancing electron transfer rates and the effective electroactive surface area. The sensor demonstrated a favorable linear response within the concentration range of 0.05–20 μM, with a limit of detection of 0.012 μM, a sensitivity of 2.988 μA μM −1 , good anti-interference capabilities, and sustained stability (signal retention rate of 82% over 30 days). Furthermore, spiked recovery experiments conducted in authentic water samples (tap water, lake water, serum and bean sprout) yielded recoveries ranging from 94.04% to 103.8% and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) are less than 5%, affirming the method’s suitability for the reliable analysis of FLX in complex matrices. This approach offers a robust sensing platform for environmental antibiotic monitoring.

Plasmonic MoO2 embedded MoNi4 nanosheets prepared by NiMoO4 transformation for visible-light-enhanced 4-nitrophenol reduction

Liujun Deng,Yu Zou,Jiang Jiang

Plasmonic hybrid catalysts have attracted great interest for the reduction of nitrobenzene waste to valuable aminobenzene, because they can use renewable solar energy to accelerate the catalytic reaction. However, the economical synthesis of non-precious plasmonic hybrid catalysts remains a big challenge. Herein we report the synthesis of plasmonic MoO2-embedded MoNi4 nanosheets (MoNi4–MoO2) by thermal annealing of NiMoO4 at 600 °C under a hydrogen atmosphere. The MoNi4–MoO2 hybrid catalysts retain strong plasmon absorption from MoO2 and demonstrate good catalytic activity from MoNi4 for 4-nitrophenol reduction in the dark. Under visible light irradiation, the excitation of MoO2 plasmon promotes the catalytic reaction further due to hot electron-induced increase of catalytic activity of MoNi4. In addition, the hybrid catalysts are relatively stable even under illumination reaction conditions.

Low detection limit and high sensitivity NO2 gas sensor based on PdO/NiMoO4/NiO ternary composite materials

Zhang Saisai,Liu Shijie,Xing Mingli,Zhang Bo,Zhang Bowen,Wang Na Luo Yan

Developing nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) gas sensors that simultaneously deliver high sensitivity, selectivity, and long‑term stability remains a considerable challenge for practical applications. In this work, nanoflower‑like PdO/NiMoO 4 /NiO composites with tunable PdO loadings were fabricated via a hydrothermal method combined with in‑situ impregnation and annealing. The constituent nanosheets measure approximately 200 nm in length and 20 nm in thickness. The optimized sensor with 0.5 wt% PdO loading achieves a response of 59.94 toward 1 ppm NO 2 at 160 °C, representing a 3.7‑fold enhancement over the unmodified NiMoO 4 /NiO sensor, along with good selectivity and long‑term stability. This performance improvement is attributed to the synergistic effects of heterojunction formation and PdO catalytic activation, which facilitate charge transfer and surface reaction kinetics. These results demonstrate the potential of the ternary composite for practical NO 2 detection. Graphical The alternative text for this image may have been generated using AI.

Spin-selective charge transfer at oxygen-deficient NiMoO4/Co3O4/NF interfaces enables high-performance alkaline water splitting

Jingjing Liu,Xiaoxin Yang,Jingcui Huang,Li Li,Yaping Ding,Minmin Liu,Xiao Wang

A novel NiMoO 4 /Co 3 O 4 /NF was synthesized via two-step hydrothermal and calcination methods. • The interfaces in Co 3 O 4 /NiMoO 4 core@shell heterostructure facilitates charge transfer and exposes substantial active sites for HER/OER. • The catalyst achieves impressive HER ( η 10  = 121 mV), OER ( η 100  = 202 mV) performance, couple with prolong stability (>120 h) in overall water splitting. • DFT calculations illustrate oxygen vacancies and interfaces activate spin-selective charge transfer, downshift d-band center and optimize adsorption ability of critical intermediates in OER. The synthesis of highly actively bifunctional electrocatalysts with robust durability for hydrogen production by overall water splitting remains constrained by sluggish oxygen evolution reaction/hydrogen evolution reaction (OER/HER) intrinsic kinetics and incompatible reaction environments. Herein, an oxygen vacancy-enriched NiMoO 4 /Co 3 O 4 /NF heterostructure catalyst with abundant tailored interfaces was fabricated via a two-step hydrothermal-calcination strategy through in situ growing NiMoO 4 nanosheets on Co 3 O 4 nanowires-coated nickel foam. The as-prepared catalyst delivers exceptional bifunctional activities in alkaline media (OER: η 100  = 202 mV, HER: η 10  = 121 mV). In the overall water-splitting system, it requires applied voltages of 1.51 V (@ 10 mA cm⁻ 2 ) and 1.73 V (@ 100 mA cm⁻ 2 ), and exhibits prolonged stability (120 h) by addressing Mo leaching. DFT calculations reveal a spin-selective charge transfer driven by the spin-state mismatch between low-spin Co 3+ and high-spin Ni 2+ at the interface. This mismatch along with oxygen defect promotes electron transfer from Co to Ni, filling the antibonding e g orbitals of Ni sites to reduce Ni coordination, downshifting the d -band center and optimizing the intermediates adsorption ability in OER. This study furnishes advanced perspectives on interfacial synergistic effects and oxygen vacancies in catalytic reactions, thus establishing a significant foundation in renewable energy conversion. A novel oxygen vacancy-rich NiMoO 4 /Co 3 O 4 /NF heterostructure with tailored interfacial architecture was fabricated via a two-step hydrothermal-calcination approach. The catalyst exhibits impressive OER ( η 100 = 202 mV) and HER ( η 10 = 121 mV) performance with prolonged stability (>120 h) in overall water splitting. DFT calculations reveal that oxygen vacancy-assisted interfacial spin configuration collaboratively regulates electron redistribution and d -band center, thus reducing kinetic barriers for OER. Construction of hierarchical NiMoO4/Ni-Co DH nanocomposite for high-performance hybrid supercapacitors and alkaline zinc batteries

Lisha Tang,Lirong Qin,Jianwei Zhao,Jiafeng Huang,Guangqiu Zhang,Yihang Zhao

The construction of hierarchical micro/nanostructures as multicomponent electrodes presents a promising approach to address the issue of poor energy density in hybrid supercapacitors (HSC) and alkaline zinc-metal batteries (AZB). In this research, a novel hierarchical structure comprising NiMoO 4 nanosheets adorned with Ni-Co double hydroxide (DH) nanoneedle clusters was fabricated on carbon cloth utilizing a straightforward two-step hydrothermal method. Owing to the unique structure and the synergistic effects, the composite-coated electrode demonstrated superior performance when utilized as an anode in various energy storage devices. When paired with activated carbon in the HSC, it could achieve an energy output of 38 W h/kg and a maximum power of 7043 W/kg, and it sustained 80 % of its capacitance after 5000 cycles. More importantly, when assembled with Zn flakes as the cathode in an AZB, it attained an extraordinary energy density of 519.7 W h/kg and an impressive power density of 16316 W/Kg. These results signify that the hierarchical NiMoO 4 /Ni-Co DH nanocomposite holds considerable promise for applications in energy storage.

Novel trifunctional electrocatalyst of nickel foam supported Co2P/NiMoO4 heterostructures for overall water splitting and urea oxidation

Mingzhu You,Shasha Yi,Guanxing Zhang,Weimin Long,Deliang Chen

The process of electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen generation is significantly limited by sluggish kinetics of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The efficiency of H 2 electrocatalytic generation can be improved by reducing the anode potential or substituting urea oxidation reaction (UOR) for oxygen evolution process. Here, we report a robust catalyst based on Co 2 P/NiMoO 4 heterojunction arrays supported on nickel foam (NF) for water splitting and urea oxidation. In the hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline media, the optimized catalyst Co 2 P/NiMoO 4 /NF displayed a lower overpotential (169 mV) at a large current density (150 mA cm −2 ) compared to 20 wt% Pt/C/NF (295 mV@150 mA cm −2 ). In the OER and UOR, the potentials were as low as 1.45 and 1.34 V. These values surpass (for OER), or compare favorably to (for UOR), the most advanced commercial catalyst RuO 2 /NF (at 10 mA cm −2 ). This outstanding performance was attributed to the addition of Co 2 P, which has a significant effect on the chemical environment and electron structure of NiMoO 4 , while increasing the number of active sites and promoting charge transfer across the Co 2 P/NiMoO 4 interface. This work proposes a high-performance and cost-effective electrocatalyst for water splitting and urea oxidation.

Synergetic modulation of a hierarchical nanoflower-like NiMoO4/Ni(OH)2 composite toward efficient alkaline water oxidation

Qirun Wang,Yanjie Duan,Zhixiong Huang,Xiaowei Xu,Jichao Shi,Lin Lin,Sheng Han,Runping Jia,Shufang Chang,Dandan Wu

Electrocatalysts with densely exposed sites and high intrinsic activity are desired for high-efficiency oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this paper, we report the microwave assisted solvothermal growth of NiMoO 4 nanoflowers on electrodeposited Ni(OH) 2 nanosheets , forming a high specific surface area (132.5 m 2 g -1 ) nanoflower-like NiMoO 4 /Ni(OH) 2 configuration supported on a conductive nickel foam (NF) substrate. The as-prepared NiMoO 4 /Ni(OH) 2 /NF behaved efficiently as a self-supported 3D catalyst electrode for alkaline OER, compared with commercial RuO 2 (298 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm −2 and Tafel slope of 88.6 mV dec −1 ), needing a low overpotential of 292 mV to attain 10 mA cm −2 , with a small Tafel slope of 85.0 mV dec −1 and good stability for 100 h running at 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH. Aside from enlarged surface area for more exposed edge sites for catalysis, the modulated synergy between Ni and Mo atoms probably contributes to enhanced intrinsic activity. A more electronegative Mo increases the electron density of Ni, thus accelerating the deprotonation of intermediates and driving the transition from Ni to NiOOH, leading to modulated thermodynamics and kinetics for OER catalysis.

Stable and efficient seawater splitting on a porous phosphate-intercalated NiFe (oxy)hydroxide@NiMoO4 core-shell micropillar electrode

Chen Yang,Nannan Gao,Xilong Wang,Jiajia Lu,Lijuan Cao,Yadong Li,Han-Pu Liang

Seawater splitting powered by solar or wind sources is a significant renewable energy storage technology for the production of green hydrogen energy. However, both the chlorine evolution reaction and chloride corrosion are intractable issues in seawater splitting. Here, a porous electrode based on a phosphate-intercalated NiFe (oxy)hydroxide shell coated on a nickel molybdate (NiMoO4) micropillar core (denoted as P-NiFe@NiMoO4) is synthesized through an electrochemical oxidation strategy. During the electrochemical oxidation process, the etching of MoO2 promotes the reconstruction of NiFe (oxy)hydroxide and the formation of porous structures in an alkaline solution. The optimized P-NiFe@NiMoO4 electrocatalysts afford a low overpotential of 258 mV at a current density of 100 mA/cm2 in alkaline seawater. By pairing the anode with a cathode of as-synthesized P-NiMoO, the electrolyzer presents a low voltage of 1.63 V at 100 mA/cm2 in alkaline seawater with excellent stability. Moreover, the remarkable stability of the anode seems to be attributed to the in-situ phosphate formed during the electrochemical oxidation process to passivate chloride corrosion.

Highly efficient construction of heterojunction Co3O4/NiMoO4 hierarchical arrays with built-in electric field enabling ultrasensitive glucose sensing

Yuying Wang,Xiutao Yang,Guopeng Zhu,Haibin Niu,Shaoqing Zhang,Quanying Wang,Hongwen Yu

The accurate non-enzymatic electrochemical detection of glucose is constrained by sluggish charge transfer kinetics and non-optimized adsorption of reaction intermediates on single-phase transition metal oxide. Herein, we rationally design heterojunction Co 3 O 4 /NiMoO 4 hierarchical arrays, where a spontaneous built-in electric field (BEF) is formed at the p-n hereo-interface due to the precise work function difference in NiMoO 4 and Co 3 O 4 . This BEF directionally drives electrons from NiMoO 4 to Co 3 O 4 at 0.16 |e|, as confirmed by DFT charge density and Bader charge analysis, thereby accelerating glucose electrocatalytic oxidation kinetics. Moreover, the hierarchical structure of Co 3 O 4 nanoneedles grown on NiMoO 4 nanorods enhances the electrochemical active area and introduces dual catalytic sites of Co and Ni atoms, whose d-band centers are modulated to weaken excessive adsorption at Co sites while maintaining Ni activity. As a results, the assembled sensor achieves an ultrahigh sensitivity of 28,470 μA mM −1  cm −2 , a low detection limit of 0.396 μM and excellent recovery rates (94.6%–105.6%) in complex real samples. This work demonstrates that resolving the charge transfer and adsorption trade-off via BEF-engineered heterostructure offers a generalizable route for high-performance sensing.
