The synthesis of highly efficient and stable CdS composites without noble metals has become a hotspot in the photocatalytic field. Although NiS is an ideal candidate, it remains a challenge to optimize the combination of NiS and CdS to improve the photocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution. Herein, we have successfully synthesized a CdS@NiS photocatalyst using bimetallic metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) as the precursor. The formation of bimetallic Cd/Ni-MOFs can lead to well-contacted heterogeneous interfaces between CdS and NiS at the nanoscale, efficiently promoting the separation of photogenerated carriers and boosting electron interface transfer. The obtained results demonstrated that CdS@NiS exhibits a high photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate of 42.7 mmol·g–1·h–1, and the corresponding apparent quantum yield reaches 13.23% at 450 nm, superior to those obtained using the traditional simple physical mixing methods. This work provides a promising strategy for the design of new photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution.

The rise of portable wearable devices has driven research in flexible lithium-ion batteries (FLIBs), necessitating advancements in the mechanical properties, electrochemical kinetics, and structural stability of FLIB anodes. This study presents the successful development of a binder-free, flexible, self-supporting membrane material (PVP-NiS/CFs) as an FLIB anode using an electrospinning technique. The material demonstrates both flexibility and a homogeneous distribution of ultrafine NiS nanocrystals embedded in carbon fibers, facilitated by a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) pore-forming agent. Moreover, the three-dimensionally interconnected carbon fiber framework enhances electron/ion transport efficiency, demonstrating superior capacitance contribution of 56.24 %. The self-supporting anode membrane exhibits outstanding stability and cycling durability, maintaining a specific capacity of 859.9 mAh/g after 600 cycles at a current density of 1 A/g. Additionally, as a flexible material, the resistance exhibited negligible change after undergoing 200 continuous bending cycles. This study offers Novel insights and approaches for developing FLIB anode materials with superior electrochemical performance.

Developing highly efficient and durable non-precious bifunctional electrocatalysts is essential for reducing the industrial cost of electrocatalytic water splitting. Herein, an ordered nanodendritic NiSe-NiS catalyst (NiSe-NiS/NFF) is constructed by stepwise electrodeposition, where interfacial reactions convert the amorphous precursor into nanocrystalline Ni 3 SeS as the dominant crystalline phase. Such a three-dimensional dendritic architecture offers a high density of electrochemically accessible active sites, continuous pathways for electron transport, and open channels that facilitate electrolyte penetration and gas release. Consequently, NiSe-NiS/NFF requires overpotentials of 65 mV for HER and 228 mV for OER to reach 10 mA·cm −2 . For comparison, NiSe/NFF requires 83 mV for HER and 241 mV for OER, whereas NiS/NFF shows a similar HER overpotential of 60 mV but a much higher OER overpotential of 255 mV, highlighting the overall performance gain achieved by the stepwise design. Moreover, the low Tafel slopes of NiSe-NiS/NFF, 39.0 mV·dec −1 for HER and 56.6 mV·dec −1 for OER, further confirm the accelerated reaction kinetics. In a two-electrode configuration, NiSe-NiS/NFF delivers 10 mA·cm −2 at 1.53 V and maintains 96.5 % current retention over 48 h; for OER, it retains 85.8 % of the initial current density after 100 h at 100 mA·cm −2 . Under OER conditions, electrochemically driven surface reconstruction promotes the conversion of Ni 2+ to Ni 3+ , adjusts the sulfide-related S environment, and generates more NiOOH active species, thereby optimizing charge transfer and enhancing electrocatalytic activity. This study shows that stepwise electrodeposition tailors electronic states and surface reconstruction, enabling bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Pseudocapacitive materials have been intensively investigated for their high specific capacitance, yet most suffer from inferior rate capability and cycling stability in energy storage. The key to addressing these drawbacks is to enhance the electronic/ionic conductivity and structural robustness of such materials. Herein, a 3D hierarchical porous carbon (HPC) skeleton with interconnected macropores was adopted as the growth substrate, and high-capacitance NiS was in situ grown within its interconnected pores to fabricate a high-performance pseudocapacitive composite. Results show that the HPC not only facilitates rapid ion transport via its porous architecture and constructs a 3D conductive network for boosted electrical conductivity, but also exerts a nanoconfinement effect to effectively suppress NiS agglomeration. Further mechanistic studies reveal that rapid cycling decay mainly stems from over-discharge induced phase transition of NiS to β-Ni(OH)2, and a potential-controlled phase transition strategy is validated to markedly improve cycling performance. The asymmetric supercapacitor assembled with the optimized composite and activated carbon delivers a maximum energy density of 51.1 Wh kg−1 and a power density of 21 566.6 W kg−1, with its capacitance retention after 10 000 cycles increased from 7.9% to 62%. This work provides a feasible strategy and mechanistic insight for improving the cycle life of pseudocapacitive devices by suppressing electrode side reactions, as well as a method to determine their optimal operating voltage window.

The development of electrode materials has become a top priority as the requirement of global energy. Two-dimensional Ni(OH) 2 nanomaterials hinder its application in supercapacitors due to its low conductivity and limited active sites.Herein, we synthesize Ni(OH) 2 @NiS composites by a two-step hydrothermal route. It increases the specific surface area of samples and improves the ion transport rate. The Ni(OH) 2 @NiS-2 product delivers a specific capacitance of 1778 F g -1 at 1 A g -1 and cycle stability (88% at 2 A g -1 after 10,000 times cycling). Furthermore, the asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) achieves an energy density of 110.25 Wh kg -1 at 2700 W kg -1 . Also, the devices show stable cycling capability at extreme temperatures.

Rechargeable magnesium-ion batteries (RMBs) demonstrate notable benefits, including higher theoretical energy density, cost-effectiveness, and improved safety characteristics, positioning them as a viable substitute for conventional energy storage solutions. Nevertheless, the ongoing development of high-performance RMBs continues to face inevitable challenges, such as unsatisfactory practical capacity, inadequate cycle durability, swift energy degradation, and a comparatively limited-service life. Herein, CoS/NiS nanomaterials with cubic-shaped morphology were prepared by a two-step metal sulfide template-free solvothermal synthesis method. The material with internal cavity structure effectively mitigates the large expansion of magnesium-ion battery cathode material due to Mg 2+ embedding during the charging and discharging process, and provides a robustness electrode-electrolyte interface, thus greatly improving the cycle life. Besides, the introduction of Ni elements into CoS materials may form heterojunctions thereby lowering the potential barrier of the conversion reaction and improving the reaction kinetics and redox reversibility. In addition, the abundance of highly electronegative S S bonds in the CoS/NiS material, which also provides many electrochemically active sites and smooth transport paths for the embedding of Mg 2+ , leads to the reduction of its polarization and the improvement of its reaction kinetics, which makes the CoS/NiS as a RMBs cathode material with a high specific capacity and a long cycling life. Thus, this research presents a feasible and effective strategy for enhancing the Mg 2+ storage capability of engineered CoS nanomaterials, with potential applicability and adaptability to other electrode materials.

Due to outstanding performance in energy conversion and storage, transition metal sulfides as well as hollow microstructure have become possible alternatives to noble metal electrocatalyst and become a hot issue. Therefore, we successfully synthesized Fe 3 S 4 @NiS hollow nanospheres (HSs) by a one-step solvothermal process, applied in oxygen evolution reactions (OER) to provide sustainable energy. Owing to particular microstructure and proper elemental composition ratio, Fe 3 S 4 @NiS HSs (partially been oxidized) show an outstanding OER performance with the overpotential and Tafel slope of only 338 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and 73 mV dec −1 in 0.1 M KOH solution, respectively.

In this work, a two-step protocol was proposed to prepare NiS/Ni 3 S 4 composite nanosheets as an electrode material for supercapacitors. The composite nanosheets were prepared by hydrothermal sulfuration on the α-Ni(OH) 2 monolayer nanosheets that were produced by grinding the mixture of nickel salt and morpholine at room temperature. The results of morphology observation indicated that the composite prepared at 140 °C had sheet-like morphology and large lateral size. It presented high-specific capacitance (2070.0 F g −1 at current density of 2.5 A g −1 ) and excellent electrochemical stability (86% retention of initial capacitance after 10,000 charge–discharge cycles). It was considered that the high electrochemical performance of this composite could be attributed to its sheet-like morphology and the introduction of Ni 3 S 4 phase.
A two-step protocol was proposed to prepare NiS/Ni 3 S 4 composite nanosheets as an electrode material for supercapacitors. In the first step, Ni(OH) 2 monolayer nanosheets were produced by grinding the mixture of nickel salt and morpholine at room temperature. In the second step, the Ni(OH) 2 monolayer nanosheets were sulfurated to NiS/Ni 3 S 4 composite nanosheets at hydrothermal conditions. Due to the well-defined sheet-like morphology, the nickel sulfide composite presented high electrochemical performance.

It was the constant pursuit of researchers to explore catalysts with higher catalytic activity, and the use of co-catalysts to modify the performance of photocatalytic materials had a significant effect on charge separation. In this paper, the non-precious metal NiS-modified ZnCo 2 O 4 composite catalytic material prepared by hydrothermal method had high-efficiency catalytic performance. When the weight ratio of NiS to ZnCo 2 O 4 was 12%, the optimal catalytic activity is 3.57 mmol g −1 h −1 , which was more than twice that of ZnCo 2 O 4 . The presence of NiS not only improved the specific surface area of the catalyst and its ability to respond to light, but the close interface formed by the combination of the two monomer phases accelerated the transfer and the utilization of the photocharge on ZnCo 2 O 4 to NiS, thereby promoting the separation of electron holes and improving the photocatalytic activity of the catalyst. According to the research results, the mechanism of hydrogen production in the photocatalytic system was revealed. In this paper, NiS was used to modify the bimetallic oxide with cubic appearance, which provided a new strategy for the development of new photocatalysts.

Facile one-pot hydrothermal synthesis of phase-pure β-NiS as non-noble metal cocatalyst. • Ultrasonic-assisted construction of intimately contacted NiS/ZIS 5 heterojunctions. • An exceptional H 2 evolution rate of 22.94 mmol g −1 h −1 is achieved over the 15% NiS/ZIS 5 composite. • β-NiS extends light absorption and accelerates charge separation in the ZIS 5 heterojunction. The development of earth-abundant non-precious metal cocatalysts to replace noble metal counterparts is critical for improving pristine photocatalyst performance and advancing the practical application of photocatalytic hydrogen production. In this study, a series of β-NiS-decorated pristine Zn 2 In 2 S 5 x% NiS/Zn 2 In 2 S 5 composite photocatalysts with different β-NiS loadings were fabricated via a facile ultrasonic-assisted deposition method, using non-precious β-NiS as a cocatalyst. All as-prepared x% NiS/Zn 2 In 2 S 5 composites showed significantly improved photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity compared to pristine ZIS 5 . The optimized sample 15% NiS/Zn2In2S5 sample delivered a hydrogen production rate of 22.94 mmol g −1 h −1 , 6.75 times that of pure ZIS 5 . The remarkably improved photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity of x% NiS/ZIS 5 composite photocatalyst is attributed to the synergistic effect from loaded β-NiS cocatalyst. It enhances light harvesting, and enables efficient separation of photogenerated carriers. This work provides a valuable reference for constructing high-performance composite photocatalysts for hydrogen production using non-noble metal cocatalysts coupled with pristine semiconductors.

Water electrolysis has been recognized as one of the most promising approaches to produce green hydrogen and eventually target carbon neutrality . Various cost-effective and light transition metal sulfides have been developed as the electrocatalysts to promote hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), one half-reaction of water electrolysis. Unfortunately, full use of their intrinsic electrocatalytic traits and exposed active sites is still challenging. Here, a nonstoichiometric titanium sulfide/nickel sulfide (TiS 2−x /NiS) hetero-catalyst is designed and constructed to induce a high-density of sulfur vacancies. As a HER electrocatalyst, it features the overpotentials of only 63 and 134 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH and 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , respectively, which is equipped with glorious durability even at high current densities (e.g., 100 mA cm −2 and 500 mA cm −2 ). Such outstanding performance partially stems from the sulfur vacancies induced by a nonstoichiometric effect, namely the intensified interfacial charge transfer nearby the TiS 2−x /NiS heterointerface. The existence of sulfur vacancies partially regulates the d -electronic structure of Ti and Ni active sites, ultimately bringing in reduced energy barrier of water dissociation as well as optimized adsorption free energy for H* intermediates. The strategy of employing both a nonstoichiometric effect and interface engineering of a metal sulfide catalyst paves a new way to design high-performance and cost-effective HER electrocatalyst in universal media.

Transition metal sulfides (TMSs) with high theoretical specific capacity and superior electrochemical performance are promising anode material candidates for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, the structural pulverization because of the severe volume change in the discharge/charge process leads to a severe capacity decay, limited rate performance, and poor cycling stability, which inhibits their practical application. Herein, we report a novel strategy for the synthesis of TMS hollow nanoparticles@carbon fibers (TMS-HNP@CFs-T) by using seaweed-derived alginate as the template and precursor. When evaluated as anode materials for SIBs, the hybrids display excellent sodium storage performance. For instance, CoS-HNP@CFs-900 exhibits high reversible specific capacity, significant cycling stability (392.2 mA h g–1 at 1000 mA g–1 over 100 cycles), and rate performance (334.2 mA h g–1 can be achieved at 5000 mA g–1). The hollow TMP NPs and conductive carbon fibers could synergistically reduce the expansion of volume and shorten the ion transport path to boost the sodium storage performance.
