MOF-on-MOF-derived FeCo@NC OER&ORR bifunctional electrocatalysts for zinc-air batteries

Qianqiao Wang,Lan Wang,Shuya Zhang,Zhuo Chen,Wenchao Peng,Yang Li,Xiaobin Fan

Zinc-air batteries, as one of the emerging areas of interest in the quest for sustainable energy solutions, are hampered by the intrinsically sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and still suffer from the issues of low energy density. Herein, we report a MOF-on-MOF-derived electrocatalyst, FeCo@NC-II, designed to efficiently catalyze both ORR ( E half  = 0.907 V) and OER ( E j=10  = 1.551 V) within alkaline environments, surpassing esteemed noble metal benchmarks (Pt/C and RuO 2 ). Systematically characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the synergistic effect of iron and cobalt bimetallic and the optimized distribution of nitrogen configuration improved the charge distribution of the catalysts, which in turn optimized the adsorption / desorption of oxygenated intermediates accelerating the reaction kinetics. While the unique leaf-like core–shell morphology and excellent pore structure of the FeCo@NC-II catalyst caused the improvement of mass transfer efficiency, electrical conductivity and stability. The core and shell of the precursor constructed through the MOF-on-MOF strategy achieved the effect of 1 + 1 > 2 in mutual cooperation. Further application to zinc-air batteries (ZABs) yielded remarkable power density (212.4 mW/cm 2 ), long cycle (more than 150 h) stability and superior energy density (∼1060 Wh/kg Zn). This work provides a methodology and an idea for the design, synthesis and optimization of advanced bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Bioderived FeNi encapsulated N-doped carbon nanotubes for high-performance ORR/OER bifunctional catalysis

Li Fan,Tan Pengyu,Li Degui,Zhuge Xiangqun,Luo Kun,Ren Yurong,Chen Yimin,Luo Yujia,Yang Kaiwen,Lu Jianwei,Liu Dan,Lei Weiwei,Ma Aijing

The extraction of chitin/chitosan from biowaste shrimp shells involves the heavy use of strong acids and alkaline solutions, resulting in a series of decomposed amino acids in the extraction waste. Herein, we demonstrate a new strategy to grow FeNi nanoalloys encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (3FeNi-NCNTs) at a high percentage by sintering the extracted amino acids, FeCl 3 , NiCl 2 and melamine at 900 ℃ in N 2 . The FeNi-NCNT exhibits a competitive limiting current density in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) to the commercial 20% Pt/C, with the onset potential and half-wave potential at 0.98 V and 0.84 V versus RHE. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance also rivals the RuO 2 catalyst, and the overpotential (E j =10 mAcm -2 - E 1/2 ) of as low as 0.76 V, highlighting a green pathway to yield superior bifunctional catalysts at low cost. When used in zinc-air batteries (ZABs), the aqueous ZAB showed excellent cyclic and rate performance, together with the peak power density and specific capacity of 173.6 mW cm -2 and 809.9 mAh g -1 (corresponding to an energy density of XXX Wh kg -1 based on the mass of consumed zinc); and the flexible ZAB with a polyacryl-amide hydrogel electrolyte also exhibited a high peak power density of 133 mWcm -2 and a long cycle life of 140 h, superior to the reference Pt/RuO 2 -based ZABs, highlighting a sustainable biowaste upcycling of shrimp shell valorization on energy storage. Unlocking industrial OER performance via corrosion-induced interface engineering and built-in electric fields

Yiwen Chen,Jun Guo,Xiao Wang,Hui Huang,Buming Chen,Ruidong Xu,Zhongcheng Guo

A corrosion-induced NiFe-LDH@Ni(OH) 2 heterointerface was constructed in situ. • A built-in electric field promoted charge transfer and active-phase evolution. • The electrode delivered high OER activity under industrially relevant conditions. Developing oxygen evolution electrocatalysts that combine fast kinetics, structural robustness, and scalability under industrially relevant alkaline conditions remains a major challenge. Herein, a corrosion-induced strategy is employed to in situ construct a NiFe-LDH@Ni(OH) 2 heterointerfacial electrode on nickel foam. The Fermi-level mismatch between NiFe-LDH and Ni(OH) 2 induces a built-in electric field, which promotes interfacial charge redistribution and accelerates catalyst reconstruction during OER. As a result, the electrode achieves an overpotential of 240 mV at 100 mA·cm −2 in 1 M KOH, with a Tafel slope of 30.5 mV·dec −1 . Under industrially relevant conditions (80 °C, 30 wt% KOH), it delivers 0.5 and 1.0 A cm −2 at 1.76 and 1.93 V, respectively, in an electrolyzer, along with low energy consumption (4.64 kWh Nm −3 H 2 ) and stable operation. Combined spectroscopic, electrochemical, and theoretical analyses indicate that the interfacial electric field facilitates directional electron transfer and accelerates the formation of active NiOOH/NiFeOOH species. This work highlights corrosion-induced heterointerface engineering as an effective strategy to couple interfacial electric-field regulation with active-phase evolution for alkaline oxygen evolution reaction. S,P Co-Doped NiFe-Based MOF-Derived Composite as Bifunctional HER/OER Electrocatalysts

Yuan Guokai,Li Qi,Xue Yuyang,Chen Qixiang,Yu Aijia,Xie Aijuan,Luo Shiping

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted considerable research interest as versatile templating agents for synthesizing transition metal compounds, particularly in electrocatalytic water splitting applications due to their tunable spatial architectures and compositional flexibility. This study investigated the in situ growth of sulfur–phosphorus codoped NiFe-based MOF catalysts on nickel foam (NF) substrates (FeNi 3 –CPS/NF) and their bifunctional activities toward hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1.0 M KOH. Electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the FeNi 3 –CPS/NF catalyst exhibits remarkable catalytic performance with low overpotentials of 136 mV for HER and 75 mV for OER, and low Tafel slopes of 30.97 (HER) and 8.49 mV dec –1 (OER), respectively. The charge transfer resistance ( R ct ) values reach 2.328 Ω during HER and 2.149 Ω during OER, highlighting efficient electron transfer. The electrochemical active surface areas (ECSA) were determined as 1200 cm 2 for HER and 1425 cm 2 for OER. Stability assessments reveal excellent durability under both HER and OER conditions, with current retention rates of 86.32% and 80.71% respectively after prolonged electrolysis. These findings collectively establish FeNi 3 –CPS/NF as a promising bifunctional electrocatalyst combining high catalytic activity with exceptional stability for overall water splitting applications. The innovative integration of heteroatom doping within the MOF architecture offers new design strategies for advanced energy conversion materials.

Core-shell MOF-derived Fe3C-Co-NC as high-performance ORR/OER bifunctional catalyst

Huaqi Wang,Chenghong Sun,Enze Zhu,Chaoyang Shi,Jie Yu,Mingli Xu

Metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived carbon materials have emerged as important candidates in the field of catalysis because of their simple synthesis, easy construction, good conductivity, and high catalytic activity. Fe 3 C nanoparticles prepared from MOFs facilitate the catalytic activity of adjacent single atoms and exhibit powerful catalytic properties. In this work, a composite structured catalyst with Fe 3 C, Co nanoparticles, and M-N x single atoms (M = Co, Fe) was synthesized (denoted as Fe 3 C-Co-NC) by constructing Fe-doped bilayer zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) with a core–shell structure, which were used as bifunctional catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The Fe 3 C-Co-NC catalyst exhibits superior half-wave potential ( E 1/2 = 0.89 V) and overpotential ( E j=10 = 1.67 V) and outperforms the commercial Pt/C and RuO 2 . This result can be attributed to the high specific surface area, hierarchical pore structure , and high graphitization degree of the Fe 3 C-Co-NC catalyst, especially the synergistic effect between Fe 3 C and adjacent single-atom active sites. Specifically, the Zn–air battery assembled using the Fe 3 C-Co-NC catalyst displays high peak power density (203 mW cm −2 ) and specific capacity (815 mAh g −1 ) without degradation after charge/discharge cycles for 57 h. Therefore, this work offers important insights into the design and research of high-performance ORR/OER bifunctional catalysts.

BN/Cu/CNT nanoparticles as an efficient tri-functional electrocatalyst for ORR and OER

Jiemei Yu,Zhankun Jiang,Taizhong Huang,Chengchun Tang

Preparing economic, stable, and highly efficient non-precious-metal materials for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great significance to the development of storage technologies and energy conversion. In this manuscript, we report a novel Cu based nano-catalyst as an electrode material fabricated by complexation-reduction method. Benefit from the stable of h-NB and the good electrical conductivity of CNT , the tri-functional electrocatalyst BN/Cu/CNT displays enhanced activity towards ORR and with the high current density of 0.95 mA/cm 2 , which is comparable to that of commercial Pt/C catalyst (cathodic peak current: 1.05 mA/cm 2 ). The BN/Cu/CNT also demonstrates high catalyst activity for the OER. From the rotating disk electrode and rotating ring-disk electrode tests, the number of electrons exchanged during the ORR is revealed to be 3.92, suggesting a 4e − pathway of O 2 reduction to H 2 O. The as prepared catalyst also has good stability and superior methanol tolerance to the commercial Pt/C catalyst in alkaline medium . Thus, it is anticipated that the BN/Cu/CNT catalyst is surely helpful for providing a new space to develop Pt-free catalyst.

Defect-Rich NiO Nanosheet for Promoting Electrocatalytic OER and Oxidation of Chiral 2-Butanol

Dong Zhichen,Wu Jian,Guo Xingjia

In this work, we prepared cubic nickel oxide (NiO) nanosheets and constructed NiO with oxygen defects induced by halogen Cl ions (NiO-Vo1). Cubic nickel oxide nanosheets were used as catalysts for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxidation of chiral 2-butanol. Under artificial simulated sunlight, NiO-Vo1 exhibited good photo-electrocatalytic OER activity and catalytic stability. The high catalytic activity is mainly attributed to the activation of nickel active sites by the halide ion-induced oxygen defect and the enhancement of photoinduced electron–hole separation efficiency. Furthermore, the electrocatalytic performance of oxygen-deficient nickel oxide for the oxidation of chiral 2-butanol was investigated. The results show the catalytic activity of NiO-Vo1 for electrocatalytic oxidation of 2-butanol to butanone compared with NiO. Interestingly, there is no significant difference in the electrocatalytic activity of NiO for (R)-(-)-2-butanol and (S)-( +)-2-butanol oxidation. When NiO-Vo1 was used as the catalyst, the catalytic oxidation reaction rate of (R)-(-)-2-butanol alcohol was significantly higher than that of (S)-( +)-2-butanol alcohol. At 1.77 V vs RHE voltage, the (R)-(-)-2-butanol alcohol has obvious oxidation reaction while the (S)-( +)-2-butanol alcohol is almost absent, realizing the selective electrocatalytic oxidation of (R)-(-)-2-butanol alcohol. This may be attributed to the difference in the interaction strength of chiral molecules with the surface defects of NiO after applying a voltage during the catalytic process, resulting in different catalytic activities. Here, our proposed strategy through the synergistic effect of applied voltage and surface defects provides a new approach for chiral molecule synthesis and efficient chiral resolution. The halide ion-induced defect-catalyst provides a new strategy for the preparation of efficient electrocatalytic water splitting OER and alcohol-selective oxidation catalysts. Graphical Abstract

3D nanostructured Ce-doped CoFe-LDH/NF self-supported catalyst for high-performance OER

Lu Wang,Yi Liu,Xiaoheng Liu,Wei Chen

Powder electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reactions usually need adhesives for electrocatalytic performance tests, leading to the increase of resistance, reduction of catalyst loading, and easy stripping of the catalyst under long-time or high current operation. In this study, Ce-doped CoFe layered double hydroxides were uniformly grown on nickel foam by a one-step hydrothermal route. A nanostructured self-supported electrode Ce-CoFe-LDH/NF without adhesive was obtained directly, which has a regular nanoneedle morphology with a length of ∼1.2 μm and tip width of ∼20 nm. Adopting Ce3+ ions with a large radius to partially displace Fe3+ ions with a small radius produced lattice distortion and more defects in the host layer of CoFe-LDH, whereby possessing the great potential to enhance catalytic behaviors. Once used as an electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction, Ce-CoFe-LDH/NF shows an outstanding electrocatalytic performance, including an optimized overpotential of 225 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a decreased Tafel slope of 34.34 mV dec−1, and a low charge transfer impedance of 2.4 Ω in 1 M KOH electrolyte. Moreover, the overpotential of the working electrode increased by only 0.04 V after 24 hours and was maintained at a current density of 50 mA cm−2. These results demonstrate a low-cost strategy compared to using noble metal OER electrocatalysts. Thus, this study highlights a ready universal approach to fabricate high-performance supported catalysts for energy-related applications.

3R-IrO2 Two-Dimensional Nanosheets with Varying Layer Spacing and [IrO6] Distortion for OER

Lin Zhu,Cheng-long Ma,Li-mei Cao,Ji Yang

Here, two iridium-based crystal structures, K0.3IrO2·xH2O and Rb0.3IrO2·xH2O, have been synthesized for application in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The 3R-type layered IrO2 structures with different lattice parameters were successfully obtained from the two Ir structures by the hydrogen ion exchange method. According to synchrotron radiation spectra and the theoretical calculation of density functional theory (DFT), the increase of oxygen vacancy concentration caused by lattice distortion in the 3R-IrO2 crystal is negatively correlated with the activity of OER. A high concentration of oxygen vacancies will reduce Ir–O hybridization, which is not conducive to the balance between the adsorption and desorption of intermediate products. The higher OH adsorption energy barrier and band gap of the 3R-IrO2 crystal limited the improvement of electrochemical performance. In addition, through the analysis of the bonding orbitals and antibonding orbitals of the two structures, we concluded that 3R-IrO2 belongs to the nonthermodynamically stable structure and is not suitable for hydrogen production by electrolysis of water.

Surface Reconstruction of Covellite CuS Nanocrystals for Enhanced OER Catalytic Performance in Alkaline Solution

Jiamin Zhu,Shengjie Zi,Nan Zhang,Yang Hu,Li An,Pinxian Xi

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is one of the important half-reactions in energy conversion equipment such as water-spitting devices, rechargeable metal-air batteries, and so on. It is beneficial to develop efficient and low-cost catalysts that understand the reaction mechanism of OER and analyze the reconstruction phenomenon of transition metal sulfide. Interestingly, copper sulfide and cuprous sulfide with the same components possess different reconstruction behaviors due to their different metal ion valence states and different atomic arrangement modes. Because of a unique atomic arrangement sequence and certain cationic defects, the reconstruction phenomenon of CuS nanomaterials are that S 2− is firstly oxidized to SO 4 2− and then Cu x + is converted into CuO via Cu(OH) 2 . In addition, the specific “modified hourglass structure” of CuS with excellent conductivity is easier to produce intermediates. Compared with Cu 2 S, CuS exhibits excellent OER activity with a lower overpotential of 192 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and remarkable electrochemical stability in 1.0 m KOH for 120 h. Herein, this study elucidates the reconstruction modes of CuS and Cu 2 S in the OER process and reveals that CuS has a stronger Cu  S bond and a faster electronic transmission efficiency due to “modified hourglass structure,” resulting in faster reconstruction of CuS than Cu 2 S.

Ruthenium-cobalt oxide solid solution nanofiber: a robust bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting with superior ampere-grade-current-density electrocatalytic performance

Xianqiang Yu,Ruikai Qi,Linfeng Zhang,Li Deng,Mengxiao Zhong,Zheng-jie Chen,Xiaofeng Lu

Constructing high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts for water electrolysis under an ampere-grade current density is crucial for practical application. Herein, ruthenium-cobalt oxide (RuCoO x ) solid solution nanofibers (SSNFs) are fabricated as robust bifunctional electrocatalyst for both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Typically, the optimized Ru 2 Co 1 O x SSNFs exhibit an ultra-low overpotential of 362 mV at 1000 mA cm -2 for OER, not only significantly superior to the prepared RuO x nanofibers (NFs), CoO x and commercial RuO 2 catalyst but also outperforming many reported typical OER electrocatalysts. In addition, the representative Ru 1 Co 1 O x SSNFs catalyst presents a good HER performance with an overpotential of only 149 mV at 1000 mA cm -2 and excellent stability over 120 h, surpassing the benchmark Pt/C catalyst. Furthermore, these catalysts are assembled to construct an alkaline overall water splitting cell, demonstrating a better performance than most of the recently reported water electrolyzers. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the addition of Co effectively modulates the d -orbitals of Ru and reduces the reaction energy barriers of O*→OOH*, benefitting to enhance the OER property. Additionally, the hybridization of Co and Ru is beneficial for modulating the strength of H* adsorption in an alkaline solution, which promotes the alkaline HER efficiency.

Opposite Electron Transfer Induced High Valence Mo Sites for Boosting the Water Splitting Performance of Ir Atoms

Ruoyu Wei,Mansheng Liao,Lidan Sun,Qingfeng Zhang,Hong Zhang,Lei Zhang,Zhongxin Song

Developing highly efficient and low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water splitting poses significant challenges. In this study, a novel bifunctional electrocatalyst, Irn-CoMoPOx, was achieved via incorporating low-loading Ir single atoms and clusters with the high-valence Mo6+ modified CoPOx nanosheets. The Irn-CoMoPOx catalyst demonstrates remarkable low overpotentials of 222 mV and 36 mV for the OER and HER, respectively, in delivering a current density of 10 mA cm–2. When employed as both the anode and cathode catalyst in overall water splitting, the Irn-CoMoPOx∥Irn-CoMoPOx configuration exhibits a superior cell voltage of 1.53 V, outperforming the benchmark Pt/C∥IrO2 electrolytic cell (1.60 V) for achieving the current density of 10 mA cm–2. Benefiting from the high-valence of Mo species, the metal–support interaction of Irn-CoMoPOx was greatly strengthened, resulting in an order of magnitude increase in the mass activity of Ir for the HER. The high valence of non-noble metals plays a crucial role in tuning the local electronic configurations and optimizing the adsorption energies of the intermediates, which synergistically improves the overall performance of Ir in water splitting. The study provides valuable insights for future research in the utilization of Ir-based bifunctional catalysts for overall water electrocatalysis applications.
