Dual-functional ionic liquid-modified PBAT-based biodegradable spherical adsorbent for high-efficiency treatment of dye wastewater

Ying Xue,Yang Yu,Yue Wu,Xiaonan Hao,Qing Liu,Shulin Sun

This study successfully prepared a porous spherical PBAT-g-IL/MMT composite adsorbent (PIMMT) for treating toxic, refractory dye wastewater through a one-step melt blending process combined with non-solvent-induced phase separation. Ionic liquids perform a dual function in this process. ILs enhance PBAT hydrophilicity through radical grafting and form intercalation structures with MMT via ion exchange, providing rapid transport pathways for pollutant molecules. This research aims to develop a biodegradable adsorbent material that combines highly efficient adsorption performance, good hydrophilicity and structural tunability. The effects of initial dye concentration, pH, temperature, contact time, and adsorbent dosage were systematically investigated. Under optimal conditions, the best sample PIMMT8 demonstrated high removal efficiency for cationic dyes methylene blue (MeB) and auramine O (AO), achieving maximum adsorption capacities (Q max ) of 145.85 mg g −1 and 191.07 mg g −1 respectively. Adsorption kinetics conformed to the pseudo-second-order model (R 2  > 0.99), while isotherm data better aligned with the Freundlich model (R 2  > 0.99), indicating multi-layer adsorption. The adsorbent demonstrated excellent reusability, maintaining removal efficiencies above 85 % for both MeB and AO after six adsorption-desorption cycles. Furthermore, the study innovatively employed a combined alcohol-alkali hydrolysis process to achieve resource recovery of the adsorbent, successfully recovering monomers such as terephthalic acid and adipic acid. This research not only fills a gap in the study of PBAT/MMT composites for dye adsorption but also provides novel insights for designing wastewater treatment materials that combine high adsorption efficiency, environmental friendliness, and resource recycling properties.

Guang Nie,Wenxuan Zhang,Hao Ding,Yanfei Qiao,Wensheng Wang,Siqi Dong,Siqi Rao,Chongjie Wang,Yingchun Li,Zhichao He

To address the challenge of fruit spoilage, this study developed an eco-friendly composite film (CGTZ-P) with dual functionality for gas regulation and ethylene adsorption. The film incorporates biodegradable PBAT microspheres to form porous gas-permeable channels and mesoporous nano-zeolites modified with tannic acid as ethylene scavengers. The optimized CGTZ-P1 formulation demonstrated remarkable mechanical enhancement, with tensile strength and elongation at break increasing by 455.84% and 49.45%, respectively, compared to the control film. The composite film exhibited improved CO₂/O₂ selectivity, strong antioxidant activity (DPPH radical scavenging: 72.10%; ABTS radical scavenging: 81.22%, and effective antibacterial effects against both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli . In the strawberry storage trial, the CGTZ-P1 film extended the shelf life by over 7 days at room temperature by maintaining fruit freshness, reducing weight loss, and delaying pH changes. This work provides a sustainable approach for developing multifunctional biodegradable packaging materials for fruit preservation.

Active Packaging Films from PBAT/PLA with Rosmarinus officinalis L. Extract: Antioxidant, UV-Shielding, and Compostable Properties

Xiaoyan He,Lisheng Tang,Ran Huang

With the growing demand for eco-friendly food packaging, poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT)/polylactic acid (PLA) composite films have emerged as promising biodegradable alternatives, but their inherent limitations (e.g., poor antioxidant capacity, weak UV stability, and insufficient antimicrobial activity) hinder practical applications. This study aimed to address these drawbacks by incorporatingRosmarinus officinalisL. extract (RM) as a natural multifunctional additive. PBAT/PLA/RM blend films with RM concentrations of 0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5%, and 1% were fabricated via melt extrusion and blown film processing. Key characterizations were conducted to evaluate thermal stability, mechanical properties, morphology, antioxidant activity, UV-shielding performance, antimicrobial efficacy, and biodegradability. The results showed that RM significantly enhanced the antioxidant capacity of the films, with the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity achieved at 0.3% RM. UV-blocking performance improved incrementally with increasing RM concentration, and films containing ≥0.5% RM filtered over 90% of UVA and UVB radiation. All composite films met biodegradability standards, with over 90% degradation observed after 240 days of composting, though RM prolonged the initial degradation stage by inhibiting early microbial activity. However, the antimicrobial effect of RM was limited, and concentrations exceeding 1% caused film stickiness, impeding processing. This work demonstrates that RM is a viable natural additive for functionalizing PBAT/PLA films, offering enhanced antioxidant and UV-shielding properties while maintaining biodegradability, thus providing a promising solution for sustainable food packaging.

Effect of silane modified nano-SiO2 on the mechanical properties and compatibility of PBAT/lignin composite films

Xinhui Gu,Juying Hou,Shiyun Ai

In recent years, the development of environment-friendly biodegradable and high-performing polymer composite for production has attracted much attention, motivated by the need to reduce the amount of microplastics accumulating in the environment. In this study, the poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and sodium lignosulphonate (SL) composite films with different loading of SL are synthesized. The PBAT/SL composite films show great UV-blocking capability and photostability. When the addition of SL reaches 10 wt%, the UV-B blocking of the composite films (P/L10) can reach about 100%. However, the tensile strength of P/L10 is about 32% less than that of neat PBAT. The silane modified nano-SiO 2 (m-SiO 2 ) , as a nano-filler, is well distributed into PBAT/SL composites, leading to improved tensile properties and the compatibility of PBAT with SL. The tensile strength of the P/L10/S2 (S2 denotes 2 wt% m-SiO 2 ) is about 55% more than that of P/L10 and 5% more than that of neat PABT. It can be observed from SEM that a suitable content of m-SiO 2 can improve the interfacial compatibility between PBAT and SL. This work provides innovative strategy for biodegradable PBAT/SL composites with remarkable UV-blocking ability and tensile strength.

Degradation mechanism of green biopolyester nanocomposites with various cellulose nanocrystal based nanohybrids

Lu Gaojun,Zhu Jingli,Yu Houyong,Jin Meijin,Abdalkarim Somia Yassin Hussain,Wei Yong

Oceans and soils have been contaminated with traditional plastic due to its lack of degradability. Therefore, green biopolymer composites reinforced with cellulose nanocrystal-zinc oxide hybrids (ZnO hybrids) with good biodegradation ability provided a positive impact on reducing environmental challenges. In this work, the effect of various morphologies of ZnO hybrids on the biodegradation ability of poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate), PBAT) under seawater, soil burial, and UV aging conditions were investigated. Sheet-like ZnO hybrids (s-ZnO hybrid) efficiently enhanced the mechanical, UV-blocking properties and biodegradation ability of PBAT nanocomposite films. Compared to neat PBAT, the best tensile strength of PBAT nanocomposite with 2 wt% s-ZnO hybrid was increased by 15.1%, meanwhile this nanocomposite films showed the highest biodegradation rate after 80 days of soil degradation and 90 days of seawater degradation. Besides, three possible biodegradation mechanisms of green PBAT nanocomposite films were presented, hinting that such PBAT nanocomposite have great promising packaging applications. Graphic abstract

Evolution of Core−Shell structure in PLA/PBAT-g-GMA/TPS ternary blends via multi-Indicator molecular simulations

Yuanchao He,Guangxiang Zhang,Huijia Lu,Xiaorong Wang,Ying Yu,Shiguang Wan,Xin Liu,Miao Xie,Guiyan Zhao

This study utilized molecular dynamics simulations to incorporate a poly(lactic acid) (PLA) matrix, poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) modified with glycidyl methacrylate (PBAT-g-GMA), and thermoplastic starch (TPS) into an amorphous unit cell via a one-step blending method. Additionally, five PLA/PBAT-g-GMA/TPS (70/30/0, 70/25/5, 70/20/10, 70/15/15, 70/10/20) amorphous unit cells were created using a stepwise blending method. The radial distribution functions, hydrogen bond distribution, cohesive energy density, mixing energy, and diffusion coefficient of the blend components were analyzed. The optimal composition, identified through simulations, was subsequently prepared, and its glass transition temperature (T g ) was determined using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The fracture surface was examined via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results showed that the one-step blending model did not form a distinct core-shell interface, whereas higher PBAT ratios in the stepwise blending model exhibited clearer core-shell interfaces. The 70/20/10 composition model exhibited the highest mixing energy (1067.0 kcal/mol). The number of hydrogen bonds at the PBAT-TPS interface was maximized in this model, indicating the strongest interfacial interaction. The predicted T g of the 70/20/10 composition model was 59.9 °C, differing by only 0.6 °C from the measured value. The core-shell structure was observed on the frozen fracture surface, confirming the reliability of the model predictions. This study systematically analyzed the formation, distribution, and interaction of the core-shell interface in the PLA-based ternary blend system using molecular dynamics simulations and multi-indicator analysis. An optimal blending ratio was identified, providing a theoretical foundation for future material design and optimization.

It balances high breathability, moisture permeability, waterproofing and antifouling performance, solving the stuffiness problem of conventional medical films. • Synergistic action of ZnO@SiO 2 nanoparticles and micro/nanostructures delivers an antibacterial rate of 97.69% against Escherichia coli. By regulating radiative properties, it enables passive cooling with a surface temperature approximately 10 °C lower than commercial fabrics. • With PLA/PBAT as the biodegradable matrix, the film can be completely degraded through enzymatic, composting and alkaline pathways. It eliminates white pollution and secondary contamination risks of traditional medical protective films at the material source. Medical protective films are crucial for public health, yet traditional materials often compromise wearer comfort and pose significant environmental challenges due to their non-degradable nature. Herein, a biodegradable and multifunctional composite film is fabricated via micro-extrusion roll forming, composed of a polylactic acid (PLA)/poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) matrix featuring surface and interface micro/nanostructures. The surface micro/nanostructures and interconnected microporous interface endow the medical protective film with a water vapor transmission rate of 203.47 g m −2 h −1 , ensuring excellent breathability and wearing comfort. The synergistic effect of uniformly dispersed ZnO@SiO 2 nanoparticles and the surface micro/nanostructures achieves an antibacterial rate of 97.69% and effectively inhibits contaminant adhesion. Furthermore, the micro/nano structures and micropores are engineered to manipulate radiative properties, resulting in a passive cooling effect with a surface temperature approximately 10 °C lower than that of commercial fabrics. Crucially, addressing the critical issue of plastic pollution, the film exhibits excellent biodegradability through enzymatic, composting, and alkaline pathways, offering a sustainable solution that mitigates the secondary environmental pollution caused by conventional medical films. This work provides a feasible strategy for the scalable production of next-generation medical protective materials that seamlessly integrate wearable comfort, high performance, and environmental sustainability. A Bio-Based Branching Agent for Preparation of Crosslinked Poly(Butylene Succinate-Co-Terephthalate): Synthesis, Thermo-Mechanical and Rheological Properties

Weigang Sun,Huixuan Xu,Yuhan Li,Zhonglin Wei,Jungang Cao,Dapeng Liang,Haifeng Duan,Yingjie Lin

To improve the mechanical strength, melt strength, and degradation performance of PBAT,a novel bio-based polyalcohol branching agent (BA) was synthesized through a three-step reaction using isomannide (1,4:3,6-dianhydromannitol) as the precursor. This agent was subsequently employed to fabricate long-chain-branched poly(butylene succinate-co-terephthalate) (LCB PBAT) copolyesters via branching modification. The chemical structure of LCB PBAT was systematically characterized by 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR spectroscopy, while its thermal, mechanical, and rheological properties were comprehensively evaluated. Results demonstrate that the incorporation of a minor BA addition (0.2–0.8 mol%) significantly enhanced key thermal and mechanical parameters, including glass transition temperature (up to −25.1°C), melting point (up to 131.2°C), crystallization temperature (up to 103.2°C), and tensile strength (up to 23.26 Mpa). Notably, the crystallinity of LCB-PBAT remained largely unchanged compared to linear PBAT. Rheological analyses revealed substantial improvements in melt processability, with the modified PBAT demonstrating a reduced loss tangent angle, enhanced elastic energy storage, and increased melt strength.

Multifunctional interface engineering: Tailoring mechanical and UV-resistant properties of PLA/PBAT-based composites via epoxy-functionalized carbon dots

Sen Qun,Song Liu,Lijia Yang,Meiru Du,Jiani Zhou,Yu Zhu,Ying Ling,Liping Yuan,Shaohua Zeng,Jun Guan

Epoxy-functionalized carbon dots (OCDs) are synthesized via a hydrolytic condensation. • OCDs provide robust chemical interfacial bridges between PLA and PBAT. • Nanoscale OCDs cores refine the phase morphology via physical interactions. • Interfacial compatibility between PLA and PBAT is enhanced via a synergy of physical and chemical interactions. • OCDs give PLA/PBAT-based composites superior UV resistance. Biodegradable polymers like poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT) hold significant promise for sustainable medical materials; however, their widespread application, particularly in demanding fields such as medical packaging materials, is hindered by inherent challenges including poor interfacial compatibility in blends and a general lack of functional properties like ultraviolet (UV) resistance. To address these limitations, this work introduced an innovative interfacial engineering strategy utilizing epoxy-functionalized carbon dots (OCDs) as a multifunctional compatibilizer for blending PLA and PBAT. The surface epoxy groups of OCDs underwent in-situ ring-opening reactions with terminal functional groups of PLA and PBAT during melt processing, establishing robust covalent bridges that fundamentally enhanced interfacial adhesion. This chemical compatibilization, synergized with the nanoscale effect of well-dispersed OCDs, led to a remarkable improvement in mechanical properties, with optimal increases of 47.7% in tensile strength and 23.4% in tensile modulus. Simultaneously, the intrinsic UV absorption of OCDs conferred exceptional UV-resistant capability to the PLA/PBAT-based composite, with absorption intensities at key wavelengths enhanced by up to 775%. Furthermore, the PLA/PBAT-based composites demonstrated modified thermal degradation behavior and improved melt strength. This multifunctional OCDs-filled PLA/PBAT composite integrated enhanced mechanical properties and excellent UV-resistant performance, demonstrating significant potential for advanced medical applications.

Direct evolution and expression of Tfcut-B3 in Bacillus subtilis for efficient depolymerization of commercial PBAT-based plastics films

Mingliang Zhang,Fanghui Ding,Xi Xiao,Minggen Cheng,Qing Hong,Xin Yan

Enzymatic depolymerization is a potentially efficient and environmentally friendly solution for poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) waste recycling and utilization. However, the depolymerization capacity of reported depolymerases against diverse, real-world commercial PBAT films remains unclear, hindering accurate evaluation of their utility. In this study, a mutant PBAT depolymerase (Tfcut-B3) with enhanced thermal stability and improved activity was obtained through directed evolution of Tfcut-DM. Tfcut-B3 completely depolymerized PBAT white film into terephthalic acid (TPA) within 48 h, yielding 2.0 and 1.3 times more TPA than Tfcut-DM and Tfcut-DM(Q132Y), respectively. Tfcut-B3 completely degraded 8/10 commercial PBAT-based films into TPA within 48 h, with the remaining two (PB-6 and PM-4) being broken down into small fragments; Tfcut-DM was unable to completely degrade any of the films. Tfcut-B3 overexpression and extracellular secretion in Bacillus subtilis was achieved using chromosomal integration; in flask fermentation, a Tfcut-B3 expression level of 274 mg/L was achieved through promoter and host optimization. Tfcut-B3 fermentation supernatant completely degraded up to 64.9 mg of PBAT white film within a 20 mL system at 72 h. These findings provide a theoretical basis for the large-scale application of PBAT depolymerases.

Co-transport of antimony with pristine/reduced PBAT microplastics in porous media: Insights into transport forms and interfacial interaction

Binying Wang,Jiao Fei,Chenjie Zhu,Dongying Xu,Huimin Sun,Yanji Jiang,Jun Wang,Xianqiang Yin

Microplastics (MPs) and antimony (Sb), key components of electronic waste, pose an emerging environmental challenge through co-exposure in anaerobic subsurface environments, yet their co-transport mechanisms remain unclear. The adsorption and co-transport of Sb(V) in association with pristine and reduced polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), a representative biodegradable microplastic, were investigated through batch adsorption and column experiments under variable chemical conditions. The adsorption results indicate that reduction aging enhances the surface roughness and pore structure of PBAT, which provides more adsorption sites for Sb(V) and thereby increasing PBAT's sorption capacity for Sb(V). Co-transport results indicate that the lower mobility of PBATs compared with Sb(V) inhibits the mobility of Sb(V) by decreasing the transport of bound Sb(V). Conversely, Sb(V) increased the recovery rate of PBATs by 20.81–26.71% through the synergistic effect of stronger electrostatic repulsion mediated by bound Sb(V) and interfacial repulsion from free Sb(V). Furthermore, high ionic strength and divalent cations weaken intermolecular electrostatic repulsion through electrostatic shielding, thus inhibiting the co-transport of PBATs and Sb(V) in porous media. The retention of reduced PBAT and Sb(V) in porous media is promoted by low molecular weight organic acids, with effects dependent on acid type. These findings highlight the critical role of MPs properties and their affinity for Sb(V) in determining their distribution and fate in the subsurface.

Visible light-responsive amine-rich porous g-C3N4-chitosan/PBAT bilayer film with high antibacterial activity for fruit preservation

Xiaokang Jiang,Shujun Liu,Mengting Zhang,Zhaoning Xu,Zhengkun Yu,Yuying Ma,Guoliang Liu,Enlong Zhou,Hai Fan,Shuhua Zhu

Eutrophic fruits tend to deteriorate after harvest due to suffering from dehydration, microbial infection, and senescence. Therefore, the development of multifunctional preservation material is crucial to resist these alterations. In this study, well designed amino-rich porous carbon nitride (APCN) with excellent photocatalytic antimicrobial performance was first infused into the biodegradable chitosan (CS) matrix to obtain photoactive film (APCN-CS). Then the photoactive film was further casting onto the surface of poly (butylene terephthalate- co -glycol terephthalate) (PBAT) to fabricate APCN-CS/PBAT bilayer film with improved water-blocking performance. The design of the bilayer film aimed to integrate the water-blocking properties of PBAT film with the excellent photocatalytic antibacterial properties of APCN-CS film, thereby achieving synergistic advantages to prolong the shelf life of fruits. The incorporation of 5 % APCN displayed excellent photocatalytic killing performance against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) under visible light irradiation, with the bactericidal efficiency up to 99.96 % and 99.75 %, respectively. Also, the film exhibits excellent antibacterial activity against fungi. The excellent antimicrobial performance could be attributed to the capturing effect of CS towards bacteria and production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from APCN. Moreover, after decorating the APCN-CS film with PBAT layer, the bilayer films are tightly connected without any delamination owing to the strong hydrogen bonding interaction, presenting significant improvements in both mechanical strength and water-blocking performance. As a result, preservation experiments demonstrated that the APCN-CS/PBAT bilayer film could effectively extend the shelf life of mango. This research provides new insights for the prevention of fruit spoilage in food industry.
