Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation is considered to be a promising approach to converting solar energy into clean chemical fuels. α-Fe2O3 is a potential photoanode material for water oxidation with a high theoretical photocurrent density (12.6 mA cm–2) driven by visible light. Constructing α-Fe2O3-based heterojunction with other semiconductors is a promising strategy to improve the actual photoelectrocatalytic activity. In this work, nitrogen-doped Ta2O5 is introduced to synthesize N-Ta2O5-h@α-Fe2O3 nanorod heterojunction with different band structures. At the interface, electrons transfer from N-Ta2O5-h to α-Fe2O3, which forms a built-in electric field. The heterojunction structure contributes to inhibiting the severe recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. By controlling the duration of mild heat treatment, the N-Ta2O5-h nanorods with different Fermi energy levels and contents of oxygen vacancies are obtained. A mild heat treatment in N2 is proved to enlarge the ΔE by leveling up the Fermi level and to promote the content of oxygen vacancies for the N-Ta2O5-h@α-Fe2O3 heterojunction as the heat-treatment time increases. The PEC water oxidation performance of the N-Ta2O5-h@α-Fe2O3 heterojunction increases when the mild-heat-treatment time is 2 h and decreases for 6 h treatment. Eventually, N-Ta2O5-2@α-Fe2O3 exhibits an enhanced photocurrent density of 3.10 mA cm–2 (4.4 times higher than that of bare α-Fe2O3), an efficiently boosted charge separation (2.0 times higher than bare α-Fe2O3), and a high chemical stability after a long-term test.

In this work, novel dual-mode lab-on-paper devices based on in situ grown WO3/BiVO4 heterojunctions onto cellulose fibers, as signal amplification probes, were successfully fabricated by the integration of photoelectrochemical (PEC)/colorimetric analysis technologies into a paper sensing platform for the ultrasensitive detection of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). Specifically, to achieve an impressive PEC performance of the lab-on-paper device, the WO3/BiVO4 heterojunction was in situ grown onto the surface of cellulose fibers assisted with Au nanoparticle (Au NP) functionalization for enhancing the conductivity of the working zone of the device. With the target concentration increased, more immune conjugates could be captured by the proposed paper photoelectrode, which could lead to a quantitative decrease in the photocurrent intensity, eventually realizing the accurate PEC signal readout. To meet the requirement of end-user application, a colorimetric signal readout system was designed for the lab-on-paper device based on the color reaction of 3,3′5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidized by WO3/BiVO4 nanoflowers in the presence of H2O2. Noticeably, it is the first time that the WO3/BiVO4 heterojunction is in situ grown onto cellulose fibers, which enhances the sensitivity in view of both their PEC activity and catalytic ability. By controlling the conversion process of hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity on the lab-on-paper device combined with diverse origami methods, the dual-mode PEC/colorimetric signal output for the ultrasensitive AFP detection was realized. Under optimal conditions, the proposed dual-mode lab-on-paper device could enable the sensitive PEC/colorimetric diagnosis of AFP in the linear range of 0.09–100 ng mL−1 and 5–100 ng mL−1 with the limit of detection of 0.03 and 1.47 ng mL−1, respectively.

Tellurene, as a typical non-layered two-dimensional (2D) material, has attracted a lot of attention due to its superior properties such as fast photoconductivity, high thermoelectricity, large piezoelectricity, and excellent nonlinear optical response. Here, a unique, simple, and rapid solution method for the synthesis of high-quality hexagonal Te nanosheets with large area has been proposed. In the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a surfactant, the raw material, i.e., tellurium sodium hydride (NaHTe) was rapidly oxidized by O2 in ethanol solution to obtain the hexagonal Te nanosheets with a size of 5–11 μm and a thickness of 50–170 nm. In addition, the experimental results demonstrated that the prepared hexagonal Te nanosheets possessed good optical absorption and exhibited good photoresponse and stability as a photoanode material in a photoelectrochemical (PEC)-type photodetector. Meanwhile, this material also showed excellent nonlinear absorption properties, and the erbium-doped fiber ring laser with the Te nanosheets as a saturated absorption material successfully achieved mode-locking operation at 1550 nm. This work provides new ideas for the preparation of hexagonal Te nanosheets and their applications in optoelectronics and ultrafast photonics.

A simple homogeneous photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing platform based on an alkaline phosphatase (ALP)–mediated pesticide assay was established for the sensitive detection of omethoate (OM). The Bi 2 S 3 @Bi 2 Sn 2 O 7 heterojunction was used as a photoactive material to provide stable background photocurrent signals. The inhibition of OM on ALP and PEC determination was carried out in the homogeneous system. In the absence of OM, dephosphorylation of L-ascorbic acid 2-phosphate trisodium salt (AAP) was catalyzed by ALP to produce the enzyme-catalyzed product (L-ascorbic acid, AA). AA, as an electron donor, could capture photogenerated holes on the Bi 2 S 3 @Bi 2 Sn 2 O 7 heterojunction, thus inhibiting the recombination of electron holes to achieve an increase of the photocurrent signal. When the OM was introduced, the enzyme activity of ALP was reduced due to the organophosphorus pesticides (OPs)–based enzyme inhibition, and the AA produced by catalytic hydrolysis was also reduced, thus reducing the photocurrent signal. Compared with the traditional PEC sensor for OPs, this homogeneous PEC sensor avoided immobilization procedures, covalent labeling, separation, and the steric hindrance effect caused by immobilized biomolecules, which achieved high recognition efficiency and caused a reduction in analysis time. Additionally, an ALP-mediated pesticide assay for the determination of OPs with a simplified experimental process further improved the stability and reproducibility of the PEC sensor. The PEC sensor showed high sensitivity to the target OM within a dynamic range of 0.05 ~ 500 ng mL −1 , and the detection limit was 0.0146 ng mL −1 . Additionally, the PEC biosensing system showed good selectivity and anti-interference ability, and exhibited a satisfactory result in spinach and mustard samples. Graphical abstract A homogeneous PEC biosensor based on ALP inhibition strategy was constructed for OM detection in vegetable samples via Bi 2 S 3 @Bi 2 Sn 2 O 7 heterojunction as the photoactive substrate material

Nowadays, developing a cost-effective, easy-to-operate, and efficient signal amplification platform is of important to microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPAD) for end-use markets of point-of-care (POC) assay applications. Herein, an ultrasensitive, paper-based photoelectrochemical (PEC) bioassay platform is constructed by in situ grown ZnO/ZnIn2S4heterojunctions onto paper fibers, which acted as photoactive signal amplification probes for enhancing the sensitivity of antibodies-based diagnostic assays, for the sensitive detection of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) targets. The crystalline flake-like ZnIn2S4composited with hexagonal nanorods (NRs) morphology of ZnO is an in situ grown, at the first time, onto cellulose fibers surface supported with Au nanoparticle (Au NP) modification to improve conductivity of the device working zone. The obtained composites on paper fibers are implemented as a flexible paper-based photoelectrode to realize remarkable performance of the fabricatedμPAD, resulting from the enhanced PEC activity of heterojunctions with effective electron-hole pair separation for accelerating photoelectric conversion efficiency of the sensing process under light irradiation. Once the target AFP was introduced into the biosensing interface assistant, with a specific recognition interaction of AFP antibody, a drastically photocurrent response was generated, in view of the apparent steric effects. With the concentration increase of AFP targets, more immune conjugates could be confined onto the biosensing interface, eventually leading to the quantitative decrease of photocurrent intensity. Combined with an ingenious origami design and permitting the hydrophobic/hydrophilic conversion procedure in the bioassay process, the ultrasensitive PEC detection of AFP targets was realized. Under the optimized conditions, the level of AFP could be sensitively tracked by the preparedμPAD with a liner range from 0.1 to 100 ng mL−1and limit of detection of 0.03 ng mL−1. This work provides a great potential application for highly selective and sensitive POC testing of AFP, and finally, developments for clinical disease diagnosis.Keywords:μPAD;photoelectrochemical;alpha-fetoprotein;point-of-care assay;immunosensing

A drop-casting method for the scalable construction of a solar cell-type light-addressable photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor on commercial phenol resin (PR) plates is reported. The sensor was fabricated by laser writing of addressable laser-induced graphene (LIG) electrode arrays on PR plates with ring-disc dual-electrode cell configurations using a 405 nm laser machine. Beneficial from the good hydrophilicity of PR-based LIG and the excellent film formation of bismuth sulfide nanorods (Bi 2 S 3 NRs), uniform Bi 2 S 3 photovoltaic films can be reproducibly deposited onto the LIG disc photoanode array via drop casting modification, which show a sensitive photocurrent response toward thiocholine (TCl) when the ring cathode array was coated with Ag/AgCl. An acetylcholinesterase (AChE)-based PEC biosensor was therefore constructed by a similar drop-casting modification method. The resulting biosensor exhibits good sensitivity toward an AChE inhibitor , i.e., galantamine hydrobromide (GH), with a calibration range of 10–300 μM and a detection limit of 7.33 μM (S/N = 3). Moreover, the biosensor possesses good storage stability, which can achieve the high-throughput screening of AChE inhibitor drugs from traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs). The present work thus demonstrates the promising application of LIG technology in constructing light-addressable PEC sensing devices with high performance and low cost.

Herein, a novel silver ion-loaded gold microemulsion assemblies (Au/Ag + MAs) mediated multifunctional signal amplification strategy was proposed to construct a sensitive immobilization-free photoelectrochemical (PEC)/colorimetric biosensor for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) detection. Through the sandwiched reaction among CEA, the CEA aptamer (DNA1) loaded on the Au nanoparticles (NPs) functionalized iron oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) nanospheres and another CEA aptamer (DNA2) immobilized on Au/Ag + MAs , a complex is formed and acquired by magnetic separation. Then, Au/Ag + MAs of the complex are disassembled into Au NPs and Ag + ions driven by an acetone response, and the obtained demulsification solution is transferred to the cadmium sulfide/cadmium telluride (CdS/CdTe) photoactive composites modified electrode . Based on the multiple inhibition functions (blocking effect of oleylamine; energy transfer effect of Au NPs; and electron snatching effect of Ag + ), the photocurrent of the electrode decreases obviously, resulting in the ultrasensitive detection of CEA (a detection limit of 16 fg mL −1 ). Interestingly, the ion-exchange reactions between CdS/CdTe composites and Ag + ions generate silver sulfide/silver telluride (Ag 2 S/Ag 2 Te) composites, and a color change of composites can be distinguished directly, leading to a quick visual detection of CEA. Compared with the traditional single-modal assay for CEA, such dual-modal PEC/colorimetric assay is a more accurate and reliable due to different mechanisms and independent signal conversion. This work will offer a new perspective for the applications of various self-assemblies in PEC bioanalysis .
