Synergistic enhancement of PEEK bonding performance and thermal shock resistance through combined surface treatment

Yujie Xie,Yeping Wu,Xiuli Zhao,Gaoming Li,Ping Zhang,Yinyu Zhang

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is widely employed across various applications due to its exceptional properties; however, its chemical inertness and low surface energy result in poor bonding performance and susceptibility to failure under thermal shock. While single surface treatments prove inadequate for optimal bonding, and although previous studies have confirmed that combined approaches enhance PEEK’s bonding strength, a systematic comparison and mechanistic understanding of different treatment combinations remain lacking. This study investigated the effects on PEEK’s bonding performance and thermal shock resistance using pairwise combinations of sulfonation etching, plasma treatment, and a catechol-based prepolymer coating, all applied with mechanical wiping. Results demonstrated that the combined sulfonation and plasma treatment produced a composite interface with nanoscale pits and polar functional groups, integrating mechanical interlocking and chemical bonding. This yielded a high room-temperature bonding strength of 4.18 MPa—a 736 % increase over untreated-PEEK—yet after 32 thermal shock cycles (−78.5 °C to 120 °C), the strength decreased by 25.36 %. In contrast, the plasma and catechol-based prepolymer coating combination formed an interfacial transition layer. Although its initial strength was 3.74  MPa, it showed no degradation after identical cycling, indicating superior thermal shock resistance. This study confirms, for the first time, the effectiveness of combined treatments in enhancing bonding durability under extreme thermal cycling. It further reveals that a coating-buffered interface maintains durability more effectively than one relying solely on direct adhesive-substrate contact. These insights offer valuable guidance for designing interfaces of difficult-to-bond polymers like PEEK in demanding environments, including aerospace applications.

Tribological properties of PEEK composites reinforced by MoS2 modified carbon fiber and nano SiO2

Cunao Feng,Yu Guo,Zhenyang Yu,Kai Chen,Dagang Wang,Xiaowei Li,Yong Luo,Qingliang Wang,Dekun Zhang

An anti-wear filler of molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) coated chopped carbon fiber (SCF) was synthesized by hydrothermal method and blended with nano-SiO 2 to enhance the tribological properties of PEEK composites materials. The results show that the SCF-MoS 2 has stronger adhesion with the PEEK matrix, which is more conducive to the internal stress transfer of PEEK composites. Compared with pure PEEK, the elastic modulus and tensile strength of PEEK/SiO 2 /SCF-MoS 2 composites are increased by 62.04% and 26.49% respectively. The friction coefficient and wear rate of PEEK/SiO 2 /SCF-MoS 2 composites are reduced by 31.43% and 79.18% respectively. In addition, it also shows good tribological properties in the simulation coal mine environment.

Osteogenic-antibacterial bifunctional implants: moxifloxacin-loaded polydopamine-hydroxyapatite coating on 3D-printed PEEK scaffolds

Jianfei Cao,Chao Peng,Haiyan Xiong,Shuhao Yang,Hongmei Yu,Haoming Wu,Yue Lu,Hai Lan,Yi Liu

The synergistic confluence between osteoinductivity and antimicrobial properties improves the efficacy of bone defect repair, reducing the occurrence of surgical complications and ultimately enhancing treatment outcomes. Drawing inspiration from mussel adhesion proteins, this study proposes a bioinspired coating strategy to fabricate bifunctional 3D-printed polyetheretherketone (PEEK) scaffolds with polydopamine-modified hydroxyapatite (PHA) coating and moxifloxacin (MOX) loading. Our findings reveal that the PHA coating significantly increases the surface roughness and hydrophilicity of PEEK, facilitating efficient MOX adsorption and sustained release. In vitro evaluations confirm the superior cytocompatibility of the PHA-modified scaffolds, which significantly promote the adhesion, proliferation and differentiation of MC3T3-E1 osteoblasts. Moreover, MOX-loaded scaffolds exhibit potent antibacterial activity against Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (96.1% and 98.7% inhibition, respectively). In summary, this integrated synergistic design not only fosters bone regeneration but also minimizes infection risks, making these scaffolds promising advanced implants for effective bone defect repair and drug delivery. Hierarchical structural engineering of PEEK composites for compatible electromagnetic wave absorption and infrared stealth

Yashu He,Fengyu Wen,Yifan Wang,Jierun Ma,Haoyuan Tan,Yuxuan Gu,Pengbo Lian,Lei Li,Hailiang Yang,Jianxin Mu

The development of multifunctional materials integrating efficient electromagnetic wave attenuation with infrared signature management has become essential for next-generation defense platforms. Here, a cactus-like multifunctional stealth filler, RGO/CoZnNi@MWCNTs/VO 2 , was rationally designed and synthesized via in situ growth, controlled pyrolysis, and solvothermal processes, and subsequently incorporated into a PEEK matrix to fabricate radar–infrared compatible stealth composites. Through structural and compositional optimization, the intrinsic conflict between electromagnetic wave absorption and infrared signature suppression was effectively resolved. At a filler loading of 15 wt%, the composite delivers a minimum reflection loss of −52.80 dB with a maximum effective absorption bandwidth of 8.0 GHz. CST simulations reveal a pronounced RCS reduction of 33.64 dB m 2 when coated on a PEC substrate, corresponding to an ∼80% reduction in radar detection distance. The composite exhibits excellent infrared thermal camouflage performance, benefiting from the suppressed heat transfer from the heat source to the outer surface enabled by the low through-plane thermal conductivity (0.161 W m −1  K −1 ) and the reduced surface infrared radiation output arising from the relatively low infrared emissivity (0.60–0.63). This work provides a promising material platform for integrated radar–infrared stealth and multispectral camouflage applications.

A Self-Lubricating PEEK Composite Enhanced by Microcapsules via Friction-Triggered Hydrogel Layer Formation

Wanxing Xu,Tianyi Han,Chenhui Zhang,Jianbin Luo

A hydrogel is an ideal material for lubrication, with hydrogel-filled microcapsules emerging as a promising strategy to simultaneously achieve low friction and high load-bearing capacity. The hydrogel microcapsules were prepared with porous SiO2 as the shell; polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyacrylic acid (PAA), tannic acid (TA), and dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine (DMPC) sol (named as PPTD sol) as one type of core material, and calcium lactate as another core material, and the two kinds of microcapsules were compounded into the PEEK matrix. During friction, the released PPTD sol and calcium lactate were cross-linked into the hydrogel through microporous extrusion and covered on the friction surface. The in situ formation of the lubricating hydrogel layer significantly improved the polymer's lubrication performance under severe operating conditions, with the friction coefficient decreased by above 82% and the one-order-of-magnitude decrease of the wear rate. The strategy is expected to become a universal solution.

The Influence of Surfactant on Sizing Agents and the Interface of CF/PEEK Composites

Yonglin Wang,Wenzhen Qin,Jianping Zhou,Kaixuan Lei,Shulin Bai,Jianfang Cao,Xiu Wang,Hongbo Liang

The effect of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS) surfactant on dispersion performance of sodium styrene sulfonate hydrate modified polyethersulfone (sPES) sizing and the interface of carbon fiber reinforced polyether ether ketone (CF/PEEK) composites was studied. The addition of SDBS reduced the particle size of the sPES dispersed in water, improving the film-forming and stabilization of the sizing agent. It was found that the SDBS would not affect the interfacial adhesion of CF/PEEK composites when the weight of SDBS was below 0.6 wt%, but the excessive amount of SDBS seriously reduced the interface strength in composites. Finally, the enhancement mechanism of the sPES/SDBS sizing agent for CF/PEEK composites interface was elaborated.

Surface modification of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) to enhance osteointegration by grafting strontium Eucommia ulmoides polysaccharides

Zhang Mengdi,Liu Jiayi,Li Canfeng,Wu Guofeng,Wu Yutong,Huang Pengzhou,Zhao Yikun,Zhang Xintao,Tang Bin

The complex bone regeneration microenvironment puts high demands on orthopedic implants. The implants are not only desired to satisfy the meeting of the biomechanical properties, but should also possess capabilities to promote osseointegration and bone immune regulation. PEEK is a promising polymeric material for bone implants due to its suitable mechanical properties that well match natural cortical bone tissue. However, its inert biological properties limit its application. As a newly-developed bioactive polysaccharides complex, strontium Eucommia ulmoides polysaccharides (EUP-Sr) has been proved to have capabilities including promoting osteogenesis and regulating bone immunity. In this study, in order to improve the bioactivities of PEEK, we introduce EUP-Sr to the PEEK surface via polydopamine-based coating and form a bioactive PEEK named [email protected] The as-fabricated [email protected] was systematically investigated through scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, water contact angle analysis to verify the successful introduction of EUP-Sr to PEEK, and in vitro biological experiments including cell proliferation and RT-PCR analysis suggested that the [email protected] can effectively promote the proliferation of preosteoblast MC3T3-E1, and exhibit significant anti-inflammation and osteogenesis effects, and so should be beneficial for osteointegration between bone and implants.

Improved Thermal and Electromagnetic Shielding of PEEK Composites by Hydroxylating PEK-C Grafted MWCNTs

Fengyu Wen,Shu Li,Rui Chen,Yashu He,Lei Li,Lin Cheng,Jierun Ma,Jianxin Mu

With the rapid rise of new technologies such as 5G and artificial intelligence, electronic products are becoming smaller and higher power, and there is an increasing demand for electromagnetic interference shielding and thermal conductivity of electronic devices. In this work, hydroxyphenolphthalein type polyetherketone grafted carboxy carbon nanotube (PEK-C-OH-g-MWCNTs-COOH) composites were prepared by esterification reaction. The composites exhibited good thermal conductivity, and compared with (MWCNTs-COOH/PEEK) with randomly distributed fillers, (PEK-C-OH-g-MWCNTs-COOH) composites showed a significant advantage, with the same carbon nanotube content, the thermal conductivity of PEK-C-OH-g-MWCNTs-COOH/PEEK (30 wt%) was 0. 71 W/(m-K), which was 206% higher than that of PEEK and 0.52 W/(m-K) higher than that of MWCNTs-COOH/PEEK (26.1 wt%). In addition, the PEK-C-OH-g-MWCNTs-COOH) composite exhibited excellent electrical conductivity and electromagnetic shielding (SE). The SE of 30 wt% PEK-C-OH-g-MWCNTs-COOH/PEEK is higher than the commercially used standard whose value is 22.9 dB (8.2 GHz). Thus, this work provides ideas for the development of thermally conductive functionalized composites. Keywords:thermal and electrical conductivity;electromagnetic interference shielding;surface treatments;composites

Enhanced thermal conductivity of PEEK based composites fabricated by its fibers grafted graphene oxide

Youli Sun,Hongbo Dang,Xiunan Li,Jiashuang Luan,Dong Jiang,Jianxin Mu,Yanhua Yang

Poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK), a thermoplastic , is known for its outstanding comprehensive performance. However, the low thermal conductivity (TC) remains a great challenge, which significantly restricts the applications of PEEK in related fields. Herein, we report a oriented Graphene oxide / PEEK fibers (GO/PEEK) composite as inspired by the structure of tree trunk (PEEK fibers) and tree bark (GO), in which GO is grafted on the surface of aminated PEEK fibers, then combined with simple vacuum hot pressing. It demonstrates that the TC of GO/PEEK is about 380% higher than that of pure PEEK at the filler loading of 20 wt%, showing good heat dissipation properties. This method offers a strategy for preparing PEEK-based thermal conductive composites with oriented structures.

Tribological and mechanical behavior of tantalum and its compounds reinforced PEEK coatings for TKR

Haoling Huo,Lin Cao,Jie Li,Huaijun Lin,Qiwei Wang,Xusheng Yang,Chuanjun Zang,Jingtao Zhang,Peng Zhang,Wei Li

In biomedical applications, poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) is capable of modifying traditional metal components, but still lacks strength and wear resistance. In this study, a series of soft-hard phase structure coatings with modified PEEK are produced by combining PEEK as the soft-antifriction phase, as well as tantalum (Ta), tantalum carbide (TaC), and tantalum nitride (TaN) nanoparticles as the hard-wear resistance phase. The coatings of a total knee replacement system were evaluated by finite element analysis (FEA). As a result, the reinforcement of nanoparticles has a significant impact on stress distribution and transfer, improving mechanical behavior and wear resistance, whereas TaC nanoparticles have the greatest ability to enhance these properties. The implant with the modified coating (PEEK/TaC) can be expected to reduce the stress of the Ti implant substrate by about 38.3 % compared to unmodified PEEK coating. Combined the experimental and simulated results showed that the modified coatings have the potential to enhance the lifespan of TKR Ti-based implants.

Enhanced interfacial adhesion of CF/PEEK-titanium hybrid laminates via rare-earth coordination interaction

Naiyu Jiang,Hanxiong Lyu,Yingze Li,Nuo Xu,Hongyan Zhang,Nan Zhou,Xiaohu Zou,Dongxing Zhang

Improving the adhesion between metal sheet and resin is an important issue for the development of high-performance fiber metal laminates (FMLs). In this study, a novel rare-earth surface modification is applied for the first time to enhance the interfacial bonding strength of titanium sheets and polyetheretherketone (PEEK). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that cerium element could form coordination bonds at the interfaces between metallic titanium and resin. The surface wettability of titanium sheet is boosted, which is beneficial to PEEK infiltration and physical adhesion improvement. Meanwhile, with the existence of coordination bonds at the interface, the interfacial shear strength between titanium and PEEK, and the flexural strength and interlaminar shear strength of CF/PEEK-Ti laminates are enhanced significantly. Therefore, the cerium surface modification method proposed in this study has great potentials for FMLs, which provides a new strategy for generating chemical bond at interfaces between metal and resin.

Enhancing Interfacial Interlocking in PBF additive manufactured CF/PEEK Composites via ZnO Nanoparticle Surface Modification

Shuai Zhao,Dayang Cai,Jinxing Sun,Jingpeng Luo,Jiaming Bai

ZnO@CF hybrids were prepared via wet-chemical deposition followed by thermal treatment. • ZnO surface modification increased CF surface roughness and favored interfacial interlocking. • ZnO@CF/PEEK exhibited higher complex viscosity and storage modulus than CF/PEEK. • 10-ZnO@CF/PEEK achieved a UTS of 125.4   MPa, 8.1% higher than 10-CF/PEEK. Powder bed fusion (PBF) of carbon fiber-reinforced polyether ether ketone (CF/PEEK) composites is often constrained by weak fiber–matrix interfacial bonding. Here, ZnO nanoparticles were deposited onto milled CFs via an in situ wet-chemical route to enhance mechanical interlocking. ZnO surface modification increased CF surface roughness (8.2 to 11.3   nm) and specific surface area (by 57.2%). While slightly increasing melt viscosity, ZnO@CF significantly improved composite mechanical properties: 10-ZnO@CF/PEEK achieved an ultimate tensile strength of 125.4   MPa (8.1% higher than 10-CF/PEEK), and 15-ZnO@CF/PEEK reached a Young’s modulus of 8.80   GPa and a flexural strength of 181.9   MPa. Fracture surface analysis confirmed enhanced matrix adhesion on pulled-out fibers, demonstrating effective interfacial stress transfer driven by nanoscale topographical features. This work provides an efficient strategy for interfacial regulation in additively manufactured PEEK composites. Download: Download high-res image (266KB) Download: Download full-size image
