Novel heparin-mimicking polymer brush grafted carbon nanotube/PES composite membranes for safe and efficient blood purification

Chuanxiong Nie,Lang Ma,Yi Xia,Chao He,Jie Deng,Lingren Wang,Chong Cheng,Shudong Sun,Changsheng Zhao

Nowadays, polymeric membrane based hemodialysis is considered to be the most practical approach for the treatment of kidney failure. To develop advanced hemodialysis membrane integrated with favorable blood and cell compatibilities and efficient blood purification ability, novel biocompatible composite membranes consisting of heparin-mimicking polymer brush functionalized carbon nanotubes (f-CNTs) and polyethersulfone (PES) are designed. Firstly, surface initiated atom transfer polymerization (SI-ATRP) is applied to synthesize heparin-mimicking polymer brush (contained the sodium styrene sulfonate (SS) and methyl ether methacrylate (EGMA) units) grafted CNT. Then, the f-CNT/PES composite membranes are prepared by a liquid–liquid phase separation technique. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) results indicated that the f-CNT would not cause severe damage on the membrane morphologies. Systemic protein ultrafiltration experiment indicated that the heparin-mimicking composite membranes owned satisfied antifouling property and protein rejection ratio. Further blood compatibility evaluation revealed that the composite membranes had decreased protein adsorption, prolonged clotting time, and suppressed platelet adhesion compared to pristine PES membrane. The results of human embryonic hepatocytes (LO-2) culture revealed that the cyto-compatibility of the modified membrane was enhanced by the blending of heparin mimicking polymer functionalized CNT. Furthermore, with the addition of f-CNT, the composite membranes showed remarkably increased removal efficiency of uremic toxin. In general, the fabricated heparin-mimicking f-CNT/PES composite membranes exhibited anti-fouling ability in ultrafiltration, excellent blood and cell compatibility and efficient toxic molecules removal ratio, thus present great potential for various applications, such as hemodialysis and bio-artificial liver support. Furthermore, the proposed method might forward the fabrication of advanced hemodialysis membrane by integrating functional nanomaterials and bioactive polymers.

PES membrane surface modification via layer-by-layer self-assembly of GO@TiO2 for improved photocatalytic performance

Changkun Ding,Xiwen Qin,Yingying Tian,Bowen Cheng

We herein report novel polyethersulfone/graphene oxide@titanium dioxide (PES/GO@TiO 2 ) photocatalytic membranes developed via the layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly technique. The synergistic coupling of GO and TiO 2 could result in improved photocatalytic activity and endow the pristine PES membrane with photocatalytic function. Various techniques were adopted to characterize the structure and morphology of PES/GO@TiO 2 photocatalytic membranes, which indicated that GO@TiO 2 was successfully integrated in PES. Contact angle testing proved that the hydrophilicity of PES/GO@TiO 2 photocatalytic membranes was improved with the increase of self-assembled GO@TiO 2 layers. FTIR results indicated that GO@TiO 2 was attached to the pristine PES membrane surface through interfacial interactions in our experimental conditions. And both the thermal stability and mechanical stability of the pristine PES membrane were improved with the incorporation of GO@TiO 2 . Meanwhile, the optimized PES/GO@TiO 2 photocatalytic membranes exhibited a water flux up to 109.8 L/(m 2 h), more than 4 times that of pristine PES membrane, while kept high bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection of 99.1%, and flux recovery ratio (FRR) of 86.1% in dark condition and the flux almost tripled after about 3 h of UV irradiation. Specially, the photocatalytic activity of PES/GO@TiO 2 photocatalytic membranes increased with an increase of self-assembled GO@TiO 2 layers. When the self-assembled layers of GO@TiO 2 were three, the membrane showed 95.1% of degradation against methylene blue (MB) dye under UV light irradiation. Thus, the prepared PES/GO@TiO 2 photocatalytic membranes can be suggested as an ideal candidate for photocatalytic templates in wastewater treatment .

Enhanced electro-Fenton oxidation in flow-through system with PES/FeOCl@CNT cathode: Nano-confined and dimensional effects

Yue Lu,Xuan Xing,Jianxin Xia

Nano-confinement has been identified as a powerful approach to boost catalytic performance and refine reaction pathways. In the present study, a flow-through electro-Fenton (E-Fenton) system was constructed with Ti mesh as anode and polyethersulfone (PES) membrane deposited with FeOCl@CNT as cathode for organic compounds degradation. The effects of different CNT dimensions (5 nm and 50 nm) with FeOCl in and out of the tube on degradation efficiency and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROSs) have been investigated. TEM, EDS, XRD, and BET have been applied for material characterization, and results showed that FeOCl was synthesized successfully and confined in CNTs with dimensions of 5 nm and 50 nm, respectively. Systems with FeOCl@CNTs deposited on PES membrane (PES/FeOCl@CNT) were constructed, and their degradation efficiency for methylene orange (MO) have been compared. Compared with unconfined system, confined system exhibited excellent MO removal efficiency which was higher than 90 % across pH from 3 to 7. Quenching experiments and EPR analyses revealed that 1 O₂ was the dominant ROSs which occupied 70.95 % in FeOCl-in-CNT5 and 49.72 % in FeOCl-in-CNT50, respectively. All these results demonstrated that the E-Fenton flow-through system with PES/FeOCl@CNT cathode system has excellent potential for practical application for wastewater treatment with organic pollutants.

Fabrication of Ti2SnC-MAX Phase Blended PES Membranes with Improved Hydrophilicity and Antifouling Properties for Oil/Water Separation

Mahdie Safarpour,Shahla Hosseinpour,Mahsa Haddad Irani-nezhad,Yasin Orooji,Alireza Khataee

In this research work, the Ti2SnC MAX phase (MP) was synthesized via the reactive sintering procedure. The layered and crystalline structure of this MP was verified by SEM, HRTEM, and XRD analyses. This nano-additive was used for improvement of different features of the polyethersulfone (PES) polymeric membranes. The blended membranes containing diverse quantities of the MP (0–1 wt%) were fabricated by a non-solvent-induced phase inversion method. The asymmetric structure of the membranes with small holes in the top layer and coarse finger-like holes and macro-voids in the sublayer was observed by applying SEM analysis. The improvement of the membrane’s hydrophilicity was verified via reducing the contact angle of the membranes from 63.38° to 49.77° (for bare and optimum membranes, respectively). Additionally, in the presence of 0.5 wt% MP, the pure water flux increased from 286 h to 355 L/m2h. The average roughness of this membrane increased in comparison with the bare membrane, which shows the increase in the filtration-available area. The high separation efficiency of the oil/water emulsion (80%) with an improved flux recovery ratio of 65% was illustrated by the optimum blended membrane.

One-step engineering of multifunctional ZIF-8/PES membrane for synergistic separation of selected proteins, dyes and antibiotics

Yanan Song,Rui Zhang,Baoyuan Dong,Yuan Liu,Mingming Zhang,Xiaoxue Hu,Jiake Li,Jianxian Zeng,Kaipeng Cheng,Lelin Zeng,Jie Shen

To address the persistent challenges of low separation efficiency and severe membrane fouling in water treatment, we engineered multifunctional mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) through a facile one-step phase inversion method by incorporating zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles (0.1–1.0 wt%) into a polyethersulfone (PES) matrix. The effects of ZIF-8 loading (0.1–1.0 wt%) on the morphology, hydrophilicity, porosity, pore size, water flux of the MMMs were investigated. The optimal MMMs delivered a water flux of 299.2 L/m 2 ·h, surpassing the pure PES membrane by 65.90 %. Furthermore, the optimized MMMs demonstrated a 516 % increase in permeate flux along with a 113 % increase in bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection rate simultaneous, indicating their potential to break through the trade-off effect. The improved rejection rate of BSA was attributed to size exclusion and electrostatic repulsion, originating from the introduction of ZIF-8 nanoparticles. In addition, the rejection rate of Congo Red (CR), Rhodamine B (RhB) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) elevated from 40.94 %, 15.40 % and 59.33 % to 95.40 %, 37.40 % and 96.80 %, respectively. This enhancement stems from the incorporated ZIF-8 nanoparticles, which simultaneously modulated the MMMs' structure and imparted specific interactions: Electrostatic attraction and π-π stacking to CR, electrostatic repulsion and π-π stacking to RhB, and π-π stacking to TCH. Furthermore, the MMMs exhibited improved antifouling performance with the increased flux recovery ratio and reduced irreversible fouling ratio. This facile one-step engineering strategy provides a scalable and efficient route to fabricate high permeability, multifunctional MMMs with increased rejection and improved antifouling performance for integrated separation of proteins, dyes, and antibiotics in complex wastewater.

Polydopamine-modified carboxylated cellulose nanocrystrals as functional fillers for polyethersulfone (PES) membranes to achieve superior dye/salt separation

Lin Ding,Deyi Han,Haichuan Zhang,Shujuan Yang,Yong Zhang

This study presents the development of advanced tight polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration membranes enhanced with polydopamine-coated carboxylated cellulose nanocrystrals (PDA@C-CNC) as functional fillers. The PDA@C-CNC fillers were synthesized via an in situ self-polymerization approach and employed as surface segregation agents during membrane preparation. Utilizing the non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) technique, the highly hydrophilic PDA@C-CNC particles migrated to the interface between the polymer solution and the coagulation bath and tightly adhered to the polyethersulfone (PES) matrix through strong hydrogen bonding and π-π interactions, forming a dense, hydrophilic selective surface layer rich in polar functional groups (amino group (−NH 2 ) and hydroxyl group(−OH)). Concurrently, the support layer developed a porous structure characterized by extended and widened cavities, facilitating enhanced mass transfer. The synergistic combination of a selective dense surface layer and an optimally structured support layer endowed the modified membranes with remarkable permeability and selectivity. Surprisingly, the water flux of the modified membrane with 0.2 % PDA@C-CNC (MPC0.2) achieved a remarkable 332 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 , which is 2.29 times higher than that of the unmodified membrane (M0). Additionally, MPC0.2 demonstrated exceptional dyes rejection rates (Congo red (CR) > 99.7 %, Eriochrome Black T (EBT) > 97.7 %) alongside minimal salt rejection (sodium chloride (NaCl): 0.2 %, sodium sulfate (Na 2 SO 4 ): 1.7 %). These findings highlight the potential of PDA@C-CNC/PES composite membranes for efficient and selective removal of dyes and salts from textile wastewater.

Enhancing the Water Flux and Antifouling Properties of PES Membranes via the Construction of a Bimetallic Polyphenol Network

Yubin Lin,Xiaoxue Xiao,Wenqiang Deng,Wei Mao,Cui Wei,Jinghong Zhou

High-performance polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration membranes integrating antibacterial activity and antifouling performance were fabricated via the in situ construction of bimetallic polyphenol networks (BMPNs) throughout the membrane architecture. Tannic acid (TA) functioned as a multifunctional molecular bridge, functionalizing silver metal–organic frameworks (Ag-MOFs) to yield hydrophilic T-Ag-MOFs and chelating Fe3+ions from the coagulation bath to form a polyphenol network during phase inversion. T-Ag-MOF incorporation generated asymmetric morphologies featuring highly porous surfaces and sponge-like cross-sections, improving pure water permeability, mechanical integrity, and bovine serum albumin (BSA) rejection. TA-mediated functionalization increased hydrophilicity, imparted a negative surface charge, suppressed nonspecific protein adhesion, and enhanced flux recovery with low irreversible fouling. At an optimal loading of 0.4 wt%, the resultant T-Ag-MOF/Fe3+/PES composite membrane achieved a pure water permeability of 593.4 L m−2h−1bar−1—1.77-fold higher than that of the pristine PES control—while sustaining a BSA rejection of 96.5%. Notably, interfacial compatibility between the T-Ag-MOFs and PES matrix was enhanced, facilitating strong, covalent-like filler–matrix adhesion. Moreover, the composite membrane delivered synergistic multifunctionality, including exceptional long-term aqueous stability, precisely tuned Ag+release kinetics, and potent antibacterial activity, as evidenced by negligible uncontrolled ion leaching and a lack of structural degradation under prolonged hydration.

Polydopamine-Assisted Two-Dimensional Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2)-Modified PES Tight Ultrafiltration Mixed-Matrix Membranes: Enhanced Dye Separation Performance

Huali Tian,Xing Wu,Kaisong Zhang

Tight ultrafiltration (TUF) membranes with high performance have attracted more and more attention in the separation of organic molecules. To improve membrane performance, some methods such as interface polymerization have been applied. However, these approaches have complex operation procedures. In this study, a polydopamine (PDA) modified MoS2(MoS2@PDA) blending polyethersulfone (PES) membrane with smaller pore size and excellent selectivity was fabricated by a simple phase inversion method. The molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of as-prepared MoS2@PDA mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) changes, and the effective separation of dye molecules in MoS2@PDA MMMs with different concentrations were obtained. The addition amount of MoS2@PDA increased from 0 to 4.5 wt %, resulting in a series of membranes with the MWCO values of 7402.29, 7007.89, 5803.58, 5589.50, 6632.77, and 6664.55 Da. The MWCO of the membrane M3 (3.0 wt %) was the lowest, the pore size was defined as 2.62 nm, and the pure water flux was 42.0 L m−2h−1bar−1. The rejection of Chromotrope 2B (C2B), Reactive Blue 4 (RB4), and Janus Green B (JGB) in aqueous solution with different concentrations of dyes was better than that of unmodified membrane. The separation effect of M3 and M0 on JGB at different pH values was also investigated. The rejection rate of M3 to JGB was higher than M0 at different pH ranges from 3 to 11. The rejection of M3 was 98.17–99.88%. When pH was 11, the rejection of membranes decreased with the extension of separation time. Specifically, at 180 min, the rejection of M0 and M3 dropped to 77.59% and 88.61%, respectively. In addition, the membrane had a very low retention of salt ions, Nacl 1.58%, Na2SO410.52%, MgSO44.64%, and MgCl21.55%, reflecting the potential for separating salts and dyes of MoS2@PDA/PES MMMs.Keywords:tight ultrafiltration membrane;molybdenum disulfide;dopamine;two-dimensional nanomaterial;polyethersulfone

Facile fabrication of COF-LZU1/PES composite membrane via interfacial polymerization on microfiltration substrate for dye/salt separation

Yi-Yi Su,Xi Yan,Yan Chen,Xiao-Jing Guo,Xing-Fan Chen,Wan-Zhong Lang

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have attracted great interest as advanced membrane materials due to their uniform channel structure and high porosity. In this work, COF-LZU1/PES composite membranes were prepared via interfacial polymerization (IP) process, and the thin and defectless COFs active layers were successfully grown on poly (ether sulfone) (PES) microfiltration substrates with 1,3,5-triformylbenzene (TFB) and p-phenylenediamine (PDA) as precursors. The prepared COF-LZU1/PES composite membranes exhibit a high rejection rate (>99.0%) for the dyes with molecular size above 1.5 nm and nonselective permeation for inorganic salts (<12.0%). At the same time, a water permeance above 80.0 L m -2  h -1 ·bar -1 is achieved, which is much higher than many other membranes with similar rejections. Long-term filtration demonstrates that COF-LZU1/PES membranes have good water stability. The excellent water permeance, high dyes separation performance and great stability endow COF-LZU1/PES membranes the performance of removing dyes from saline wastewater.

Two-nozzle electrospinning of SPSF-PEI/PES composite membranes with anti-swelling properties and efficient adsorption of anionic dyes

Yinyu Chen,Mingfei Huang,Zuhui Qin,Lei Zhang,Jiahao Mo,Xianhui Li

Swelling of membranes can lead to reduced mechanical strength and deformation of the pore structure. The traditional cross-linking modification method still suffers from the disadvantages of solvent residue and complex operations. This study proposed a stability-enhanced sulfonated polysulfone (SPSF)-polyethyleneimine (PEI)/polyethersulfone (PES) composite membrane through a simple and effective strategy using a two-nozzle electrospinning technique. The SPSF/PES and PEI/PES jets interweave in the electric field via electrostatic interactions or hydrogen bonding to form a composite membrane, which demonstrated a tensile strength increase of over 85.2 % alongside a swelling ratio reduction exceeding 51.4 % compared with the PEI/PES membrane. The adsorption of SPSF-PEI/PES composite membranes for Acid Fuchsin follows a pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Besides, the adsorption capacities of the optimal composite membrane for Acid Orange 7 (AO7), Acid Fuchsin (AF), Congo Red (RB), and Methyl Blue (MB) reached 267.9, 320.2, 428.4, and 439.5 mg/g, respectively. This study proposed a simple and effective strategy for preparing electrospun membranes with improved swelling properties and high-efficiency anionic dye adsorption.

Synthesis and Application of PES–PEEK Multiblock Copolymer in Toughening Epoxy Resin: Optimal Balancing Heat Resistance, Stiffness, and Toughness

Zhao Dan,Chen Dong,Ma Yuhong,Yang Wantai

Epoxy resin is confronted with the trade-off among high heat resistance, high modulus, and good toughness. In order to address the challenge, a series of poly(ether sulfone)-polyetheretherketone multi-block copolymers (PE b PK) are synthesized with hydroxyl-terminated poly(ether sulfone) and fluorine-terminated polyetheretherketone oligomers with different molecular weights as build-blocks. As a proof-of-concept, the PE b PKs are applied as modifiers to toughen bisphenol A epoxy (E51) with 4,4 ′ -diaminodiphenyl sulfones as a hardener. Introducing rigid PEEK segments into flexible PES improves the thermal resistance and modulus of the epoxy composites and without at expanse of toughness. It is due to the inherent rigidity of the PEEK segments and the molecular-level microphase separation of the composites. Apart from PE b PK-5 k /10k (PE b PK-xk/yk indicates that in a multiblock copolymer, the M n of PES is x and the M n of PEEK is y, with units in thousand Daltons), other variants gain prominently enhanced modulus and toughness. This PE b PK modification offers a strategy for developing high-performance epoxy composites.

A TA-PEI “molecular bridge” enabled ZIF-8/PES membrane with enhanced alkali resistance for oily electroplating pretreatment wastewater

Heng Li,Rongxin Guo,Chang Liu,Dexin Chen,Junjie Yang,Qiwei Wang,Peng Zhang

A TA-PEI “molecular bridge” strategy was devised for robust in-situ growth of ZIF-8 on PES membranes. • The composite membrane exhibited 175.48 L·m −2 ·h −1 flux and 98.29% oil rejection. • The membrane exhibited outstanding stability in highly alkaline (pH 12) environments. • Mechanical strength was significantly improved due to ZIF-8 reinforcement and crosslinking synergy. The treatment of highly alkaline, surfactant-stabilized oily wastewater from electroplating pretreatment poses a significant challenge for membrane technology. Conventional polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration membranes suffer from severe fouling and chemical degradation under such harsh conditions. To address these dual limitations of performance and stability, this study developed a “blending-in-situ growth” strategy to fabricate a ZIF-8/TA-PEI/PES composite membranes. The TA-PEI interlayer acts as a molecular bridge, enabling uniform and robust anchoring of the ZIF-8 coating. The optimized membrane exhibited a pure water flux of 175.48 L·m −2 ·h −1 (≈4.5× that of pristine PES) and a high flux recovery rate of 75.86%. For surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions, it achieved 98.29% rejection, maintaining 96.54% efficiency over 10 cycles. Crucially, it demonstrated exceptional alkali resistance, retaining 92.17% rejection after 72 h at pH 12, alongside a tripled tensile strength (3.01 MPa). This work provides a durable and high-performance membrane solution engineered specifically for the demanding separation of complex industrial wastewater.
