Fabrication of FDTS-modified PDMS-ZnO nanocomposite hydrophobic coating with anti-fouling capability for corrosion protection of Q235 steel

Innocent O. Arukalam,Emeka E. Oguzie,Ying Li

Perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane-based poly(dimethylsiloxane)-ZnO (FDTS-based PDMS-ZnO) nanocomposite coating with anti-corrosion and anti-fouling capabilities has been prepared using a one-step fabrication technique. XPS analysis and contact angle measurements showed the fluorine content to increase, while the hydrophobicity of the coatings decreased with addition of FDTS. XRD analysis revealed existence of ZnO nanoparticles of dimensions ranging from 11.45 to 93.01   nm on the surface of coatings, with the mean particle size decreasing with FDTS addition, and was confirmed by SEM and TEM observations. Interestingly, the anti-corrosion performance and mechanical properties of the coatings increased remarkably on addition of FDTS. Indeed, the observed low adhesion strength , surface energies and the outstanding anti-corrosive properties imply that the obtained coating would be useful in anti-fouling applications.

Fabrication of multifunctional coating with anti-corrosion, weather-resistance and self-healing for Q235 steel via soft-hard hybrid architecture

Hao Liu,Aihua Tang,Weixiang Xu,Dongxu Li,Qingsong Wu,Yizhang Yang,Yiting Xu,Birong Zeng,Conghui Yuan,Lizong Dai

A persistent pursuit in marine materials science is the development of strong and tough efficient anti-corrosion coatings for metal protection. Unfortunately, coating was universally challenged to balance the hardness and flexibility. Herein, this paper proposed a “soft-hard” hybrid structural strategy to integrate these properties. The coating was fabricated by embedding “hard” epoxy resins (EP) into “soft” polyurethane (PU), wherein EP cured by 4′-(p-ethanediamine phenyl)-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine. Diels-Alder dynamic bond, hydroxy terminated polydimethylsiloxane and functionalized boron nitride were introduced into to impart self-healing properties, hydrophobic and anti-corrosion performance. Prepared coated sample (PUSi3FET3BN) had superior hydrophobicity (114°), flexibility (43 MJ⋅m −3 ) and corrosion resistance (5 × 10 7  Ω·cm 2 after 28 days immersion). Moreover, PUSi3FET3BN sample demonstrated excellent weathering resistance and self-healing, allowed damaged samples healed at 100 °C for 60 min. This ingenious strategy provides valuable insights for development of multifunctional coatings, especially for protecting equipment in extremely harsh environments.

A novel method to control the release rate of halloysite encapsulated Na2MoO4 with Ca2+ and corrosion resistance for Q235 steel

Xuteng Xing,Dan Zhou,Erjun Tang,Shaojie Liu,Xiaomeng Chu,Xiaodong Xu,Yongquan Xu

The natural halloysite nanotubes were used as the nanocontainer to load Na 2 MoO 4 corrosion inhibitor , and the release rate of Na 2 MoO 4 was further controlled by wrapped with the CaMoO 4 end stopper through adding with Ca 2+ . The variable release rates were fulfilled by the formation of CaMoO 4 end stopper with different strength, and the release time can be adjusted from one to dozens of hours. Moreover, the prepared complex corrosion inhibitor is also an acid-responsive smart material, which can quickly release the large amount of corrosion inhibitors under acidic conditions through the decomposition of insoluble CaMoO 4 complex on the surface or end of halloysite. In addition, the epoxy coating mixed with 10 wt% Ca 2+ treated Na 2 MoO 4 loaded halloysite can provide the highest corrosion resistance and sustained release of the corrosion inhibitor to achieve corrosion healing in the coating defects.

A novel Chitosan Schiff Base Derivatives as Eco-Friendly Corrosion Inhibitors for Q235 Carbon Steel: A Combined Experimental and Theoretical Study

Mohammed Mustafa Yousif Modwi,Huixia Feng,Yafei Liu,Zhao juanjuan

In this study, two novel chitosan-based Schiff bases, SCBS-I and SCBS-II, were synthesized by condensation reactions between chitosan and isatin or menthone, respectively. The prepared Schiff bases were further quaternized via 2,3-epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride (EPTAC) to augment inhibitor solubility and inhibition efficiency. Developed as a green and eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor for Q235 carbon steel in hydrochloric solution. The successful synthesis of two chitosan derivatives was characterized via 1 H NMR and FTIR studies. The inhibitors efficiency was evaluated through weight loss, with a greater inhibition efficiency of 94.8% achieved at 250 mg. L -1 . Electrochemical studies inclding EIS and PDP measurements suggest the inhibitors act as mixed types, while aligning with the Langmuir adsorption isotherms model. Gibbs free energies (ΔG) indicate that the inhibitors adsorb onto the carbon steel surface via physical and chemical adsorptions. The surface morphology was investigated using SEM, and XPS confirmed the formation of an adsorbed protective film on the metal surface. Molecular dynamics simulations were applied to investigate the corrosion inhibition mechanism. These findings provide new insights into the design of eco-friendly Schiff base–chitosan derivatives, and future work will focus on optimizing molecular structures and evaluating their performance in more complex corrosive environments.

Synergistic Effect of Imidazoline Derivative and Benzimidazole as Corrosion Inhibitors for Q235 Steel: An Electrochemical, XPS, FT-IR and MD Study

Wang Pengjie,Xiong Liping,He Zhongyi,Xu Xin,Hu Jianqiang,Chen Qi,Zhang Renhui,Pu Jibin,Guo Lei

The corrosion inhibition effect and synergistic mechanism of novel imidazoline derivative (SMIF) and benzimidazole (BMZ) in 3.5 wt% simulated concrete solution were studied experimentally and theoretically. The complex inhibitors have the most outstanding inhibition efficiency when SMIF concentration is 0.1 g/L and BMZ is 0.9 g/L, the corrosion inhibition efficiencies of weight loss, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy and Potentiodynamic polarization curve (Tafel) were 88.81%, 86.27% and 90.22%, respectively. Electrochemistry analysis results proved that the corrosion inhibition mechanism of the inhibitors in the corrosion solution was mainly the formation of a protective film on the surface of carbon steel. FT-IR, Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy all proved the existence of the protective film. Molecular dynamics proved that the composite inhibitor molecules could be stable on the surface of carbon steel and when consist of complex inhibitor was 0.1 g/L SMIF and 0.9 g/L BMZ the stable adsorption morphology were the highest. This work confirmed that SMIF and BMZ inhibitors have a good synergistic effect, greatly improving the inhibition efficiency and reducing the cost of corrosion inhibition, and has a certain guiding significance for synergistic inhibition.

Synthesis, electrochemistry, DFT studies and MD simulations of novel dopamine derivatives for corrosion inhibition of Q235 steel in 1 M HCl solution

Xiangchun Yang,Guangling He,Wenjian Dong,Liangmin Yu,Xia Li

Novel multisubstituted dopamine derivatives were synthesized and their ability to protect carbon steel in 1 M HCl was investigated by combining electrochemistry , surface analysis and theoretical calculations. The results showed that 91.53% inhibition could be obtained by adding 0.1 g/L of dopamine derivatives at 298 K. Potentiodynamic polarization tests showed that the addition of the dopamine derivative resulted in a corrosion potential difference of ≤ 31 mV, thus identifying the compound as a hybrid inhibitor. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and contact angle indicate the successful formation of a hydrophobic barrier on the carbon steel surface, and scanning electron microscopy and laser confocal microscopy confirm the improvement in surface morphology. The dopamine derivatives fit the Langmuir adsorption model with both physical and chemical adsorption. Density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulations revealed that dopamine derivatives rely on lone pairs of electrons in heteroatoms to adsorb parallel to the metal substrate and protect the carbon steel from corrosive media attack. Thus, dopamine derivatives can contribute to the pickling industry as a green corrosion inhibitor to avoid steel damage and waste.

Insights into the corrosion inhibition of novel 1,8-naphthalimide derivatives bearing primary amino groups on Q235 steel in chloride-contaminated concrete pore solution

Xiaoyi Zhang,Zihang Wu,Chen Wu,Shenglan Ma,Guoliang Lin,Guohui Yan,Youqing Su,Ligeng Xu

In this study, two 1,8-naphthalimide (NA) derivatives with primary amino groups (EDA-NA, synthesized from ethylenediamine; and DAT-NA, synthesized from 3,5-diaminotriazole) were synthesized and evaluated as corrosion inhibitors for Q235 carbon steel in chloride-contaminated simulated concrete pore solution. Short-term corrosion tests determined that the optimal concentration for both inhibitors was 400 mg/L. At this concentration, the effects on steel passivation and long-term resistance to chloride-induced corrosion over 21 d were examined by electrochemical testing and surface analysis. The results indicate that both EDA-NA and DAT-NA promote the passivation of steel. The passive film thicknesses calculated from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements were 3.38 nm and 3.70 nm, respectively (compared to 3.16 nm without corrosion inhibitor). Additionally, both significantly enhance the corrosion resistance of carbon steel in chloride environments, maintaining excellent corrosion inhibition capabilities even after 21 d of exposure. DAT-NA maintains maximum protective efficacy, with a corrosion inhibition efficiency of 97.12 % as calculated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Furthermore, the corrosion inhibition mechanisms of the two inhibitors were investigated. The enhanced corrosion suppression performance was primarily attributed to the spontaneous mixed adsorption of physical and chemical adsorption by the inhibitors. The outstanding long-term inhibition effect of DAT-NA was mainly attributed to the additional coordination provided by the 1,2,4-triazole ring.

Preparation of ZIF-67@DTMS NPs/Epoxy composite coating and its anti-corrosion performance for Q235 carbon steel in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution

Y. Lei,Z.N. Jiang,X.Q. Zeng,Y.Y. Li,X. Wang,H.F. Liu,G.A. Zhang

In this work, dodecyltrimethoxysilane (DTMS)-modified zeolitic imidazolate frameworks nanoparticles (ZIF-67@DTMS NPs) were prepared and added into epoxy (EP) matrix to fabricate composite coating . The anti-corrosion performance and adhesive force of ZIF-67@DTMS/EP coating were measured with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and pull-off tests. The results show that compared to pure EP coating, the impedance modulus of ZIF-67@DTMS/EP composite coating is significantly enhanced. The prepared ZIF-67@DTMS NPs as nanofillers can significantly improve the corrosion resistance and the adhesion of EP coating. In addition, the diffusion coefficient of aggressive species in the coatings were determined by molecular dynamics simulations , and the influence mechanism of ZIF-67@DTMS NPs on the anti-corrosion performance of epoxy coating was explored. The ZIF-67@DTMS NPs could combine with EP tightly through forming hydrogen bond . Meanwhile, these NPs could fill in the holes in the EP coating and then block the transmission channel of aggressive species, which enhances the barrier of coatings to the access of aggressive species, then improves the anticorrosion performance of coatings.

In-situ scanning electrochemical microscopy visualization of self-passivation in galvanized steel under aggressive environments

Zeyu Huang,Hao Li,Yuhua Xiao,Qinhao Zhang,Pan Liu,Liankui Wu,Fahe Cao

Ensuring the long-term durability and safety of galvanized steel structures in industrial and environmental applications requires a deep understanding of their corrosion resistance, particularly at defects such as cut edges and scratches. These sites often initiate localized corrosion due to micro-environmental inhomogeneities. This study investigates the dynamic corrosion behavior of galvanized Zn/Q235 steel couples by integrating macro-electrochemical testing with in-situ high-resolution scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) to reveal the underlying interfacial physicochemical mechanisms. While macro-electrochemical measurements indicated significant passivation, with the corrosion current density decreasing by over an order of magnitude to 1.00 × 10⁻ 6 A·cm⁻ 2 after 24   h, micro-scale SECM mapping revealed a more complex mechanism. As corrosion progressed, oxygen reduction reactions became increasingly concentrated at the Zn/Q235 interface, where localized pH stabilized near 8. This remarkable pH buffering is attributed to the continuous precipitation of zinc corrosion products, an interfacial process that consumes both Zn 2+ and OH⁻ to form a passivating layer. At simulated scratch defects, an initially aggressive galvanic coupling with steep pH gradients was gradually suppressed as these precipitates formed, demonstrating a self-passivation effect. These findings elucidate a locally driven, interfacial chemical buffering mechanism, governed by precipitate formation, that controls passive film development and slows degradation. The results establish direct links between interfacial pH regulation, corrosion-product formation, and self-passivation at defects, advancing the interface science underpinning environmentally resilient galvanized coatings.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure and Corrosion Inhibition Effect of S-benzyl-O,O'-bis(p-tert-butyl phenyl)dithiophosphate for Q235 Steel in 1.0 M HCl

Chengduan Wang,Wan Gou,Changlu Liu,Dong Fu,Lvshan Zhou,Chuan Lai,Bin Xie,Shasha Zhu

The new corrosion inhibitor of S-benzyl-O,O'-bis( p -tert-butyl phenyl)dithiophosphate (SOBP) was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, 31 P NMR and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Meanwhile, the corrosion inhibition and mechanism of SOBP for Q235 steel in 1.0 M HCl were studied by weight loss and potentiodynamic polarization measurement, also the crystal structure of corrosion inhibitor was presented. The potentiodynamic polarization measurement result indicates that SOBP is a mixed-type inhibitor. The two methods all reveal that the inhibition efficiency increases with the concentration of SOBP, which is an effective corrosion inhibitor. The adsorption of SOBP on Q235 steel surface in 1.0 M HCl belongs both physisorption and chemisorption.

Influence of ZnO Nanoparticle Size on Barrier Performance and Corrosion Protection of Poly(dimethylsiloxane)-Coated Q235 Steel in Chloride Environment: Bode and Computational Simulation Investigations

Arukalam Innocent O.,Uzochukwu Ikechukwu N.,Tüzün Burak,Dagdag O.,Oguzie Emeka E.

Ethylhexanoic acid-modified PDMS-ZnO nanocoatings containing varying dimensions of ZnO nanoparticles (30, 50 and 90 nm) were prepared. The main objective was to appraise the effect of varying dimensions of ZnO nanoparticles on the protective efficacy of ethylhexanoic acid-modified PDMS coating in aqueous solution of 3.5 wt% NaCl/ Pseudomonas aeruginosa . Barrier properties and anti-corrosion performance of the coatings were evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Computational simulation techniques [quantum chemical computation (QCC) via density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation] were employed to provide molecular/atomistic level information on the chemical molecules responsible for corrosion protection performance and their adsorption phenomena. EIS results showed that the coating containing 30 nm ZnO nanoparticles maintained high impedance values in the order of 10 9 magnitude throughout the immersion periods. The obtained results were validated by wettability, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy results. The DFT calculations showed that PDMS and ethylhexanoic acid with energy gaps of 5.123 and 5.337 eV, respectively, are most responsible for the corrosion protection effect. The good adsorption of the coating containing 30 nm ZnO particles was validated by MD simulation result with adsorption energies (E ads ) of − 2.28 kcal/mol, suggesting it is most susceptible for hydrophilic interaction.

A New Strategy for Long-Term Smart Corrosion Protection of Q235 Carbon Steel Using Polyaniline Nanofiber Covalently Linking with Modified GO as Reinforcement of Epoxy Coating

Qian Cheng,Xiao Fengjuan,Zhao Dong,Zhang Hualin,Wang Shimao,Tian Zhiren,Yang Han,Duan Yumei,Zhang Xuefei,Wang Meng,Yan Lu,Kong Shimao Longfei,Gao Hui,Zhang Guangtian,Fu Shifeng,Li Mengya,Li Jun

Polyaniline nanofiber (PANI-f) was covalently linked with cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) modified graphene oxide nanosheets (CTGO) to fabricate a smart composite coating for corrosion protection of carbon steel. In the copolymerization process, CTAB served both as a modifier for the modification of GO and a dispersant for the preparation of polyaniline nanofibers. The prepared PANI-f can avoid the accelerated corrosion of steel by a conventional synthesis method using hydrochloric acid as medium. The covalent binding between PANI-f and CTGO improved the compatibility of PANI-f-GO with the waterborne epoxy emulsion, which significantly enhanced the hydrophobicity and antipermeability of the coating. The PANI-f-GO waterborne epoxy coating exhibited excellent smart corrosion protection efficiency by catalyzing the formation of passivation film on the steel surface. Molecular adsorption energy on Fe(110) and radial distribution function confirmed the chemical adsorption of the PANI-f-GO composite on the steel surface. The superior smart protective performance can be ascribed to the synergistic effects of PANI-f and CTGO.
