Exploring highly active and stable catalysts toward hydrogen evolution reactions and oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER) is the key for electrochemical water splitting. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) calculation results forecast that the defect-rich RuO 2 and TiO 2 nano-heterostructures can effectively adjust the electron structure of RuO 2 , and accelerate the water electrocatalysis, consequently reinforcing the intrinsic activity of the catalyst. Experimentally, to form an integrated nano-heterostructure, a facile approach is designed for in situ fabrication of TiO 2 on Ti mesh (TM), simultaneously combined with defective RuO 2 (D-RuO 2 ) nanoparticles. Benefiting from the rich active sites, the D-RuO 2 /TiO 2 /TM nano-heterostructure formed provides current densities of 50 mA/cm 2 at 71 mV for HER and 10 mA/cm 2 at 296 mV for OER in alkaline media. For overall water splitting, the electrolyzer assembled with D-RuO 2 /TiO 2 /TM electrode can reach 10 mA/cm 2 with a voltage of only 1.59 V. Moreover, under a fixed current density, such an electrolyzer also achieves an outstanding stability.

Ru has recently been regarded as a promising catalyst for hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to its similar binding energy towards *H but lower price compared to Pt. Nevertheless, the quest of high-efficiency Ru-based catalysts for HOR and HER is driven by the current disadvantages including low activity and unsatisfactory stability. Herein, we have fabricated and engineered two-dimensional (2D) Ru-based snow-like nanosheets with Ru/RuO 2 interface (Ru/RuO 2 SNSs) via a post-annealing treatment. Detailed characterizations and theoretical calculations indicate that the interfacial synergy, which is dependent on the temperature for annealing, can alter the hydrogen binding energy (HBE) and hydroxide binding energy (OHBE), as a result of the enhanced HOR and HER performance. Impressively, the optimal Ru/RuO 2 SNSs display a mass activity of 9.13 A mg Ru –1 at an overpotential of 50 mV in 0.1 mol L –1 KOH for HOR, which is 65, 304, and 21 times higher than those of Ru SNSs (0.14 A mg Ru –1 ), RuO 2 SNSs (0.03 A mg Ru –1 ), and commercial Pt/C (0.43 A mg Ru –1 ), respectively. Moreover, Ru/RuO 2 SNSs display improved HER activity with a low overpotential of 20.2 mV for achieving 10 mA cm −2 in 1 mol L –1 KOH. This work not only provides an efficient catalyst for HOR and HER, but also promotes fundamental research on the fabrication and modification of catalysts in heterogeneous catalysis .

Ruthenium oxide-based electrocatalysts have been regarded as promising alternatives to the state-of-the-art Iridium oxide (IrO 2 ) towards acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, their practical applications of proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE) are severely limited by the lack of efficient strategy to balance the seesaw relation between stability and activity of ruthenium oxide (RuO 2 )-based catalysts. Herein, we report that both the activity and stability of RuO 2 can be significantly boosted though bismuth (Bi) doping. We find that the introduction of Bi can increase the initial valance state of Ru in Bi 0.15 Ru 0.85 O 2 , which can promote the activation of Ru active sites, and facilitate the reaction kinetics of acidic OER. Besides, the presence of Bi can strengthen the electron interaction to maintain the structure stability and improve the electrocatalytic performance by reducing the energy barriers and avoiding the overoxidation of active species. The obtained Bi 0.15 Ru 0.85 O 2 catalyst shows a low overpotential of 200.0 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm –2 under acidic media, and a long-term stability for over 100 hours. Our work provides an important inspiration to rational design RuO 2 -based electrocatalysts with high activity and durability toward acidic OER.

In the study presented herein, a series of TiO2-supported Ru catalysts were prepared through over-impregnation with different amounts of H2O2and applied to the catalytic combustion of dichloromethane (DCM). The experimental results show that the optimal (1 H2O2)-Ru@TiO2catalyst sample yields 90% DCM conversion at 301 °C, which is 40 °C lower than the temperature required by the (0 H2O2)-Ru@TiO2catalyst. This good activity is related to its high number of acid sites (especially Brønsted acid sites), an appropriate amount of uniformly dispersed RuO2particles, and strong interaction between RuO2and the TiO2support. In addition, excessive H2O2leads to the growth and phase segregation of RuO2, which weakens the interaction between RuO2and the TiO2support and decreases catalytic activity. Moreover, H2O2addition also contributes to the stability of catalysts, which possibly results from the re-dispersion of RuO2on the TiO2support during the reaction.

Developing cost-effective and highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts that operate in both acidic and alkaline media is crucial for industrial electrocatalytic water splitting. However, achieving high performance under dual pH conditions remains a significant challenge. Herein, we report the synthesis of multi-sized RuO 2 sub-nanoclusters on Co 3 O 4 nanoarrays via a facile method, which demonstrates exceptional OER activity in both acidic and alkaline environments. The optimized catalyst exhibits remarkably low overpotentials of 165 mV in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and 223 mV in 1 M KOH at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , respectively. Additionally, it exhibits outstanding stability, maintaining performance over a 10-h continuous operation, which is attributed to the robust structural stability of the dispersed RuO 2 sub-nanocluster morphology. Atomic-scale investigations reveal a layer-by-layer growth mechanism of Ru on the Co 3 O 4 substrate, transitioning from single atoms to monolayer clusters and ultimately to sub-nanoclusters as Ru loading increases. This growth mechanism provides a rational strategy for the precise design and synthesis of advanced cluster-based catalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further elucidate the strong oxide-support interactions between RuO 2 clusters and the Co 3 O 4 matrix, facilitating electron transfer from RuO 2 to Co 3 O 4 and generating an electron-deficient region. This electronic modulation enhances –OH adsorption and accelerates OER kinetics. These findings underscore the potential of metal sub-nanoclusters for designing highly efficient and durable electrocatalysts for water electrolysis.

The anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a four-electron reaction process with the relatively sluggish kinetics, which has become one of the main factors limiting the efficiency of the hydrogen evolution reaction in water splitting, so it is crucial to improve the kinetics of OER. Herein, a new RuO 2 -based composite catalyst Co-Ru-Py@500 has been designed with abundant pore spaces formed by the stacking of nanoparticles, where the nanoparticle comprises CoO x /RuO 2 hybrid species and an encased carbon layer involving holey space. The Co-Ru-Py@500 possesses a relatively large specific surface area and a higher proportion of hydroxyl species than Ru-Py@500 without the introduction of CoO x species. The catalyst Co-Ru-Py@500 shows a smaller onset potential of 1.39 V vs. RHE and overpotential (230 mV@10 mA cm −2 ) than Ru-Py@500, and significantly favorable tafel slope, electrochemical impedance. In addition, the Fe-Ru-Py@500 and Ni-Ru-Py@500 introduced with FeO x or NiO x species are still inferior to Co-Ru-Py@500, but both of them show a better OER activity than Ru-Py@500. Through introducing Co, Fe, and Ni oxidation state species, the catalytic activity of RuO 2 can be promoted to varying degrees. The design strategy in this work provides a significant guidance for the rational design of efficient OER catalysts.

The lattice oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the currently predominant mechanism, while the grain boundary (GB) OER is still the enigma. This study proposes the grain boundary oxygen mechanism (GBOM) and validates it using Zn-RuO2@ZnO in OER. An optimal GB density in Zn-RuO2@ZnO achieves an overpotential of 170 mV and 600 h durability at 10 mA cm–2. As an anode catalyst in proton-exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWEs), Zn-RuO2@ZnO exhibits exceptional stability (>300 h at 500 mA cm–2) and high efficiency, requiring only 1.68 V to deliver 1 A cm–2 under 60 °C. Notably, the reduced symmetry at GBs enhances the Ru 4dxy-O 2p hybridization, manifested as a distinct antiferromagnetic state, which activates the GBOM pathway and stabilizes its operation through electron transfer into lower-energy orbitals. Our findings highlight that GBs with antiferromagnetic characteristics offer an intriguing design strategy for developing highly active and stable OER catalysts.

The development of oxygen reduction and evolution reaction (ORR/OER) electrocatalysts for zinc-air batteries (ZABs) is impeded by insufficient stability. This study demonstrates progress in stabilizing the commercial OER electrocatalyst (RuO 2 ) by easily integrating a composite ORR electrocatalyst containing cobalt and Gd 2 O 3 nanodots, resulting in an advanced ZAB cathode. An in-situ formed Co-Gd 2 O 3 interface enhances the electronic environment of cobalt through strong metal-support interaction, thereby boosting intrinsic ORR activity and stability. Crucially, during battery cycling, Gd 2 O 3 and RuO 2 dynamically reconstruct to form a stable Gd 2 O 3 -RuO 2 interface. This facilitates directional electron transfer from Gd to Ru, effectively preventing excessive oxidation, dissolution, and structural collapse of RuO 2 under high-potential conditions, thus stabilizing the OER process. This synergistic “dual interface” strategy combines the in-situ constructed Co-Gd 2 O 3 interface with the dynamically reconstructed Gd 2 O 3 -RuO 2 interface, collectively enhancing the durability of ZAB cathode catalysis. Consequently, the assembled ZAB maintains stable cycling for 3485 cycles at 10 mA·cm −2 , demonstrating much longer stability than that of the commercial PtC/RuO 2 electrocatalyst.

Developing highly active and stable acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts for proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE)is critical for green hydrogen production. While conventional RuO 2 -based catalysts exhibit superior intrinsic activity, their practical application is severely hampered by an activity-stability trade-off. Herein, we propose an oxyanion engineering strategy that successfully overcomes this bottleneck by achieving surface hydroxylation and introducing sacrificial agents in RuO 2 . On one hand, the strategy-induced surface hydroxyls (-OH) significantly accelerate the reaction kinetics, delivering a low overpotential of 189 mV at 10 mA cm −2 . On the other hand, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) results reveal that in-situ introduced WO x acts as a sacrificial agent, effectively mitigating over-oxidation and dissolution of Ru. In-situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) confirm that the catalyst follows an optimized adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) pathway with suppressed lattice oxygen participation, ensuring long-term stability (>220 h at 10 mA cm −2 ). Ultimately, when applied in PEMWE, the catalyst enables a low cell voltage of 1.79 V at 1 A cm −2 and maintained stable operation for 100 h at 200 mA cm −2 . This work establishes a new paradigm of dual-functional synergistic design for developing efficient and durable acidic OER catalysts.

We prepared carbon aerogel/RuO 2 composites with three-dimensional microtubes based on renewable natural kapok fibers by combining a NaClO 2 pretreatment, CO 2 activation and loading of RuO 2 nanoparticles . The electrochemical performance of the material was optimized by tuning the carbonization temperature. The composite calcined at 800 °C for 2 h and activated by CO 2 for 30 min possessed an integrated tubular structure and moderate pore size distribution . This composite material also showed highest specific capacitance of 433 F g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 with a capacitance retention of 91.5% for 2000 cycles in 3 M KOH solution in three-electrode system. The maximum energy density was 8.92 Wh kg −1 at 558.12 W kg −1 at a cell voltage of 1 V in 3.0 M KOH aqueous electrolyte in a symmetric device. We attribute the reversible capacity of the obtained bio-derived carbon aerogel/RuO 2 composites to the high-speed flow of the electrolyte in the unique hollow tubular structure, the appropriate pore size distribution and the synergetic effect of the high capacitance of RuO 2 and good stability of the carbon material.

Hydrogen production via proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is constrained by the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the anode, which typically requires catalysts rich in noble metals such as iridium (Ir) and ruthenium (Ru) in acidic media, leading to high costs. In this work, Mn3O4-RuO2 nanocomposites were synthesized via a hydrothermal reaction. The morphology, structure, and chemical composition of the catalysts were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, EDS, and XPS. The results indicate that the Mn3O4 spinel structure was successfully incorporated into the rutile structure of RuO2, forming a nanocomposite. XPS analysis revealed that the introduction of Mn results in an increased electron density on Ru species, yielding a Mn3O4-RuO2 catalyst with low Ru loading and Ru4+ species in an electron-enriched state. The OER activity parameters, including overpotential at 10 mA·cm−2, mass activity, and Tafel slope, were evaluated using the three-electrode system. The 20% Mn3O4-RuO2 composite exhibited superior activity and good stability under acidic conditions: an OER overpotential (η10) of 200 mV at 10 mA·cm−2, a mass activity of 231 A·g−1 Ru, and a Tafel slope of 53.97 mV·dec−1, outperforming the pure RuO2 catalyst. Durability was assessed via chronoamperometry (CA) and chronopotentiometry (CP), which showed that the performance decay rate of the 20% Mn3O4-RuO2 sample was lower than that of pure RuO2. This study provides a strategy for designing low-cost, acid-stable OER electrocatalysts for energy conversion applications.

The acidic oxygen-evolution reaction is intrinsically sluggish and requires large overpotentials, creating a key bottleneck for proton-exchange membrane water electrolysis technology. Here we show an edge-sharing single-layer oxide, 1T-phase ruthenium oxide (1T-RuO 2 ). The edge-sharing configuration enables parallel alignment of ruthenium 4 d orbitals across adjacent RuO 6 octahedral clusters, facilitating intersite electron transport, in contrast to conventional rutile-type RuO 2 with corner-/edge-sharing structures. 1T-RuO 2 exhibits high acidic oxygen-evolution reaction activity with a low overpotential of 77 mV at 10 mA cm −2 . It also delivers a mass activity of \(3,743.43\,{\rm{A}}\,{{\rm{g}}}_{\text{Ru}}^{-1}\) and a turnover frequency of 23.99 s −1 at 1.50 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode, exceeding those of rutile-RuO 2 and showing highly competitive performance under the described experimental framework. In addition, 1T-RuO 2 maintains a current density of ∼2.9 A cm −2 at a cell voltage of 1.70 V for over 1,100 h in a proton-exchange membrane water electrolyser.
