The escalating demand for high-energy-density storage has intensified research on Li-Cl 2 batteries, which exhibit ultrahigh energy density but suffer from rapid failure due to the poor ionic conductivity and mechanical fragility of naturally formed LiCl interphases on Li metal. Here, we design an organic–inorganic hybrid protective layer (Li 3 Sb/LiF/PVDF, denoted as LSLP@Li) via in situ interfacial engineering. This designed layer effectively isolates the Li anode from corrosive SOCl 2 electrolyte and suppresses parasitic reactions. The synergistic Li 3 Sb/LiF phase ensures high ionic conductivity and guides uniform Li deposition, while the flexible PVDF matrix accommodates cycling-induced volumetric strain. As a result, the LSLP@Li anode maintains structural integrity for over 48 h in corrosive electrolyte (<2 h for bare Li), enabling Li-Cl 2 batteries to maintain over 400 cycles at 1000 mA g −1 . The study advances the understanding of naturally formed LiCl layer on SOCl 2 -based battery and provide valuable strategy to achieve the interfacial stability.

Despite the high energy density, intrinsic safety, and low cost that render aqueous zinc-ion batteries attractive, their practical viability is compromised by capacity decay and internal short circuits—phenomena traceable to uncontrolled dendritic growth during non-uniform Zn stripping/plating. In this work, we propose a cost-effective nanoporous CaSO 4 coating strategy to enable the uniform zinc deposition. In situ dendrite visualization, scanning electron microscopy, and laser confocal microscopy collectively corroborate its exceptional dendrite-suppression capability. The artificial interlayer's ability to homogenize the interfacial electric field underpins the remarkable cyclability of the Zn@CaSO 4 symmetric cell. Consequently, it maintains stable operation for over 1700 h at 1 mA cm –2 and 1 mAh cm –2 , a duration that represents a 16-fold improvement relative to an unmodified Zn electrode. Furthermore, extended cycling reveals the durability of the Zn@CaSO 4 ||MnO 2 configuration. At a current density of 1 A g –1 , it maintains a specific capacity of 158 mAh g –1 over 1000 cycles, achieving a capacity retention as high as 72.7%. The study pioneers nanoporous CaSO 4 as a low-cost, eco-friendly, and readily scalable protective layer for Zn anodes, significantly enhancing cycling stability and capacity retention.

Anode-free lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have emerged as a promising next-generation secondary battery technology due to the ultrahigh energy density. However, the practical application is severely limited by irreversible Li plating/stripping behavior and an unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the anode. Porous carbon coatings, which combine excellent electronic conductivity with tailorable pore structures, offer a viable approach to regulate Li deposition morphology and interfacial chemistry. Still, the systematic correlation between the structural parameters of carbon materials and cathode electrochemical behavior remains inadequately understood. In this study, porous conductive carbon coatings are constructed on Cu current collectors to systematically investigate the correlations among carbon structural parameters, SEI composition, and electrochemical performance. ECP600, EC300, and Super P with distinct specific surface areas and structural ordering were selected as model materials, and XRD, Raman, BET, and XPS were combined to elucidate how interlayer spacing, graphitization degree, and pore architecture regulate Li deposition modes and the inorganic/organic component ratio of the SEI. The results reveal that Super P, featuring a moderate specific surface area and a high graphitization degree, induces the formation of a thin SEI enriched in LiF/Li 2 O/Li 2 CO 3 , uniform in-pore confined deposition, and stable interfacial impedance, whereas the excessively high specific surface areas of ECP600 and EC300 lead to overly thick or compositionally unstable SEI layers, thereby amplifying polarization. This work proposes a carbon structure–centered interfacial engineering strategy, providing design guidelines for precise SEI regulation in anode-free LMBs.

Lithium (Li) metal anode holds great promise for high-energy-density rechargeable batteries. However, it suffers from the Li dendrites growth and uncontrollable side reactions with electrolyte due to the unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer. Herein, we propose a facile strategy for the in-situ fabricate of organic-inorganic composite artificial SEI layers on Li surfaces, which consist of organic fluorinated siloxane and inorganic LiF-rich phases. The hybrid artificial SEI endows high mechanical strength (13.1 GPa) and Li + transfer number (0.62). Such robust SEI protective layers can not only guide uniform nucleation and deposition of Li metal by facilitating uniform Li-ion distribution, but also prevent unfavourable side reactions. Accordingly, the protected metallic lithium anode (PMTFPS-Li) anode enables stable Li plating/stripping performance in symmetric cells for more than 300 h at 4 mA ·h/cm 2 under a high areal capacity of 4 mA/cm 2 . Moreover, the PMTFPS-Li/S cells could maintain more than 300 stable cycles at 0.5C and the PMTFPS-Li/LFP cells present excellent cycling performance (400 cycles at 1C) and enhanced rate capability (110.4 mA·h/g at 3 C). This work will inspire the design of artificial SEI on Li anodes for advanced Li metal batteries.

Nitrile electrolytes have attracted extensive attention for achieving high-voltage lithium metal batteries. However, the poor compatibility of nitrile electrolyte with Li anode remains a huge challenge owing to severe side reactions. Herein, changing concentration of LiTFSI in succinonitrile (SN) is proposed to improve interface compatibility by regulating the solvation structure. The higher coordination number (1.3) of TFSI − in high concentration electrolytes results in a LiF-rich SEI film, accounting for the superior performance of LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 |Li cell with negligible capacity fade after 100 cycles at 0.5 C. Density functional theory (DFT) suggests that the solvation structure with a high coordination number of TFSI − towards Li + leads to a reduced Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital (LUMO) energy level, which promotes the decomposition of TFSI − to form LiF-rich film. Also, a reduced decomposition energy barrier of anion is demonstrated. This work provides an encouraging way to enhance interface stability via modulating the solvation structure achieved by regulating concentration.

Reducing silicon particle size in lithium-ion battery anodes not only mitigates surface stress, prevents pulverization, and reduces SEI film cracking but also significantly enhances surface area, thereby amplifying the impact of particle surface chemistry on performance. In this study, the surface of silicon particles with 80-nm diameter were oxidized in air to prepare Si@SiO x with a core–shell structure. We investigated the effect of different oxidation levels of the shell on the cycling performance of the nanosized silicon particles. The results showed that longer heating times decreased initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) but improved cycling performance. An interesting phenomenon was observed that, when the oxidation level was high, fast charging reduced battery capacity; while at lower oxidation levels, fast charging maintained or even slightly increased battery capacity. Based on electrochemical analysis, we proposed an explanation for this phenomenon: for small-sized nanoparticles with a large specific surface area, the effect of potential is particularly significant. The oxidation level of the particle surface affects the impedance of the SEI film, and high charge/discharge rates will also produce bias voltage, both of the two factors will limit the formation of crystallized Li 15 Si 4 (c-Li 15 Si 4 ). Reducing the amount of c-Li 15 Si 4 can effectively improve the cycling performance of the electrode, but excessive bias voltage will sacrifice the lithium storage capacity of the electrode. For the designing of small size silicon particles, both factors should be considered.

Inherently insulating and thermally stable nanocellulose membranes are prone to forming a three-dimensional porous structure, which is conducive to storing large amounts of electrolyte and providing ion migration pathways. However, the infiltration of polar electrolytes can compromise the mechanical strength of the nanocellulose membrane by disrupting hydrogen bonding, leading to a suboptimal interface and cycling stability of the batteries. This study effectively improves the mechanical strength and electrochemical performance of bacterial cellulose (BC) based separators by in situ constructing a dual-network structure polymerized from poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) and acrylic acid (AA). The distinctive dual-network structure not only significantly enhances the wet strength of the BC separator but also introduces a polymer-coordination transport mechanism, building upon the original lithium-ion pore transport system. The transport of lithium ions is regulated by the ether, ester and carboxyl groups in the polymer network, so that they are uniformly deposited on the surface of the lithium metal negative electrode, and finally form an SEI layer dominated by LiF, which greatly reduces the side reactions between the electrolyte and the electrode. The assembled lithium symmetric battery exhibits stable lithium deposition/stripping behavior, and the cycle stability and rate performance are far superior to those of commercial PP separators.

Silicon (Si) anode is widely viewed as a game changer for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its much higher capacity than the prevalent graphite and availability in sufficient quantity and quality. Most Si anode designs are nanostructured to overcome the large volume variation during cycling, but this comes at the expense of manufacturability, cost advantage and other merits. Here we demonstrate that micro-sized Si (μm-Si) recycled from photovoltaic waste can serve as anode material, exhibiting an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.94% and retaining 83.13% of its initial capacity after 200 cycles through the rational electrolyte design. With a formulated ether electrolyte of 3 M LiPF 6 in 1,3-dioxane (DX)/1,2-diethoxyethane (DEE), NCM811||μm-Si pouch cells survive 80 cycles and deliver an energy density of 340.7 Wh kg −1 even under harsh conditions. Responsible for the impressive electrochemical performance is a unique SEI chemistry where the flexible polymer-dominated outer layer well holds fractured Si particles together and the rigid Li 2 O/LiF-rich inner layer serves to facilitate ionic conduction and suppress side reactions. Our work not only suggests a more sustainable supply source for Si particles but also addresses the major problems facing μm-Si anode materials.

In this paper, we report a mussel-inspired polydopamine coating on the Si/C electrode via a simple immersion process to improve the electrochemical performance such as cycle stability and rate capability. The nanometer-thick polydopamine coating layer enables fast Li + transport at the interfaces and takes part in the formation of SEI due to the electron-rich amine group. The PD coated Si/C electrode exhibits good performance in long cycling test. Compare with the uncoated Si/C electrode, the capacity retention of the coated electrode is improved from 59.5% to 80% after 200 cycles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy prove that PD coating really promotes the formation of uniform and dense SEI and reduces cracks on the electrode surface. Meanwhile, the pulverization of electrodes which breaks the electrical contact with the current collector is alleviated.

Phosphorus-based materials are considered to be reliable anode materials for potassium ion batteries (PIBs) due to their high theoretical capacity but suffer from inferior cycling stability and an unstable Solid Electrolyte Interface (SEI) layer. Herein, optimized ball-milled parameters and concentrated electrolytes are introduced to enhance the electrochemical performance of Sn4P3/C anodes. Consequently, the electrodes synthesized under optimized ball milling parameters could deliver a reversible capacity of 307.8 mA h g−1in diluted Potassium hexafluorophosphate (KPF6) electrolyte. Moreover, compared with diluted bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (KFSI) electrolyte, a robust inorganic KF-rich SEI layer can be formed on the electrode’s surface by employing concentrated KFSI electrolyte and provides more rapid K ion conduction rates. Meanwhile, a large proportion of the FSI−anions participated in the K+solvation shell when the KFSI concentration increased. As a result, high specific capacities (225.1 mA h g−1at 50 mA g−1after 200 cycles) and excellent Coulombic efficiency (97.24% at 500 mA g−1after 200 cycles) can be achieved. This work may deepen our understanding of synthetic optimization in electrode material design and the role of concentrated electrolyte in tunning the solvation structure, and also offer an insightful clue to the design of high-capacity phosphorus-based anodes.Keywords:phosphorus-based anode;ball-milling;concentrated electrolyte;solvation structure;SEI layer

In his study, we reported adiponitrile (ADN) as a novel electrolyte additive for the LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 cathode electrode in voltage ranges of 3.0-4.4 V, 3.0-4.6 V and 3.0-4.8 V. The electrochemical properties of the electrodes were investigated by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), a charge/discharge test, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results of this study showed that adding ADN to the electrolyte could effectively enhance the reversible capacity and cycling performance of the cathode electrode. The initial discharge capacities were 167.8 mAh g -1 and 214.8 mAh g -1 in electrolytes without and with 3% ADN, respectively. And the capacity retention rates were 68.4% and 70.4% at a voltage range of 3.0-4.6 V after 100 cycles in electrolytes without and with 3% ADN, respectively. The electrochemical performance was improved because of the compact and smooth solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film, which lowered the impedance between the cathode and the electrolyte by suppressing the decomposition of LiPF6 and improving the stability of EC. In addition, adding 3%ADN to the electrolyte was favourable for obtaining a lower R ct, which could promote the charge-transfer process by suppressing the interfacial reaction between the electrode and electrolyte.

The precarious interfacial chemistry between the electrode and electrolyte is the determining step that restricts the long cycle life of Ni-rich-based Li-metal batteries. Here we show that the robust cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers can be engineered by tuning the spatial linking structure of dipentacyclic anhydride (DPA) additives. Specifically, an inorganic-rich CEI/SEI layer induced by CBDA (a DPA featuring a quaternary ring spatial linking structure) exhibits superior Li + interfacial kinetics and an ultra-stable cycle performance, outperforming the other systems. As a result, the NCM811ǁLi cells containing CBDA show excellent long-term performances, even under high voltage, high load, and high charge-discharge current density, respectively. The coin-cell using a low-loading cathode exhibits 129 mAh g- 1 discharged capacity for over 200 cycles at a 6 C rate. Moreover, The high-loading cathode retains 80 % capacity after 312 cycles at 1.0 C. Furthermore, the NCM811ǁLi pouch cell demonstrated a capacity retention rate of 99.8 % after 50 cycles. Prolonged stable cycling for 900 cycles (93 % capacity retention) in an NCM811ǁGraphite pouch cell is enabled by CBDA. The DPA-based additives in this work offer a highly promising and feasible route to achieving a long-term and high-capacity lithium battery featuring a Ni-rich cathode.
