Achieving lightweight and ultrabroadband electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption requires precise regulation across multiple scales; however, bridging molecular design with macroscopic architecture remains a significant challenge. Herein, a multiscale design strategy is proposed by integrating molecular-level precursor engineering, catalytic nanostructure evolution, and topological structural design. A titanium (Ti)-modified polysiloxane (PSO) precursor is constructed through the molecular incorporation of tetrabutyl titanate (TBT), which enables homogeneous Ti distribution within the polymer network and subsequent regulation of carbon evolution during pyrolysis. During pyrolysis, the tailored precursor chemistry drives the in-situ formation of catalytically active TiO x C y phases, which induce the transformation of free carbon from disordered nanoparticles into interconnected carbon nanowires (CNWs) networks. Coupled with a triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) architecture enabled by additive manufacturing, the resulting CNWs-SiOC ceramics exhibit a synergistic enhancement in EM-wave attenuation. The optimized sample (ST-5) delivers a minimum reflection loss (RL min ) of −59.21 dB at 14.1 GHz with a thickness of 3.30 mm, along with an ultrabroad effective absorption bandwidth (EAB) of 9.20 GHz at 3.70 mm. The superior performance originates from the cooperative effects of improved impedance matching, enhanced conduction loss enabled by CNWs networks, and intensified interfacial polarization arising from abundant TiO x C y /SiOC heterointerfaces, together with multiple scattering within the TPMS framework. The proposed multiscale design strategy achieves lightweight SiOC ceramics with broadband EM-wave absorption through the synergistic effects of molecular precursor engineering, carbon-topology reconstruction, interfacial regulation, and TPMS architecture.

Silicon oxycarbide (SiOC)-based materials hold significant potential as anodes of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their high theoretical capacity, low volume expansion, and excellent electrochemical stability. However, they exhibit low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) and poor cycling stability. In this study, carbon/silicon oxycarbide (C/SiOC) composites were synthesized using a facile sol-gel method followed by ambient pressure drying and thermal treatment. The phase composition of SiOC was tuned by the oxygen content of precursors to achieve a high content of reversible phase for Li storage. Among four organosilanes including trimethylethoxysilane (TMES), 1,3,5,7-tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane (TMCTS), methyltriethoxysilane (MTES), and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), TMCTS leads to the highest content of SiO 3 C and SiO 2 C 2 phases owing to moderate oxygen content, which are responsible for Li storage. Hence, the C/SiOC composite with TMCTS as precursor exhibits significantly higher initial Coulombic efficiency (70.53%) than those with TMES, MTES, and TEOS as precursors (68.86%, 43.85%, and 33.11%), which this value exceeds the typical ICE range of 50–60% reported for other SiOC-based materials. It was demonstrated that a higher oxygen content of the precursor promotes the generation of Li 2 O during the lithiation process, which acts as a robust structural buffer to enhanced structural stability. TMCTS-derived C/SiOC composite exhibited excellent cyclic stability over long-term cycling, retaining 601.87 mAh·g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A·g −1 . The results verify the critical role of phase composition of SiOC as anodes of LIBs, providing a new strategy to design SiOC-based materials with high electrochemical performance by tuning phase composition of SiOC from its precursor.

Polymer-derived SiOC (PD-SiOC) ceramic aerogels (CA) are widely recognized as ideal electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers; however, achieving high-attenuation microwave absorption and gaining an in-depth understanding of dielectric loss mechanisms remain challenging. Herein, a robust and thermally stable PD-SiOC CA was synthesized by pyrolyzing a silicone aerogel with an interpenetrating double network structure, which exhibited EMW attenuation performance. Notably, the interpenetrating double network structure containing both a carbon-rich and a silica-rich framework, facilitates the formation of numerous SiO 2 -C heterogeneous interfaces, enhancing dielectric polarization and improving impedance matching. The highly porous structure of CAs (porosity > 49 %) enhances macroscopic interfacial polarization and multiple scattering, further attenuating EMW energy. As a result, CA-1400 demonstrates exceptionally high attenuation, with a reflection loss of –73.8 dB (>99.99999 % absorption) at 8.01 GHz and a thickness of 4.28 mm, along with a wide effective absorption bandwidth of 6.72 GHz at thickness of 2.71 mm. Additionally, CAs exhibit lightweight characteristics with a density ranging from 0.66 to 1.21 g/cm 3 , excellent mechanical properties with compressive strengths ranging from 9.0 to 56.9 MPa, outstanding oxidation resistance, and superior thermal insulation with thermal conductivities ranging from 0.226 to 0.358 W·m −1 ·K −1 . This work thoroughly investigates the high-temperature structural evolution and dielectric polarization loss mechanisms of PD-SiOC CAs, offering a novel approach for the practical application of high-performance CA microwave absorbers.

The low effective capacity, inferior initial Coulombic efficiency, and unstable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) of silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) pose significant challenges for the widespread application. Herein, to circumvent these issues, a micron-sized SiOC-based anode with 3D structure is constructed by Si and Cu co-doping using solvent-free ball milling for high-performance LIBs. The Cu 3 Si alloy is formed in situ as an intermediate that is anchored to the surface of Si within the SiOC matrix. The unique 3D SiOC-based anode with Cu 3 Si interphase provides fast electron conductivity and high mechanical strength, while facilitating the formation of a robust and LiF-rich SEI. Specifically, the SiOC-based anode delivers excellent cyclic stability and rate capability (750.0 mAh g −1 for 1000 cycles at 1 A g −1 ). Notably, the full cells equipped with an NCM811 cathode maintain this cyclic stability, achieving a 93.0% capacity retention after 150 cycles. This work provides insights into the rational fabrication of a 3D micron-sized SiOC-based anode with an in situ generated Cu 3 Si interphase for advanced LIBs and beyond.

Carbon-bonded carbon fiber (CBCF) composites are novel and important high-temperature insulation materials owing to their light weight, low thermal conductivity and high fracture tolerance. To further improve the mechanical property of CBCF composite, we propose a three-dimensional (3D) SiC nanowires structure, which is in situ grown on a CBCF matrix via directly annealing silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) ceramic precursor. The synthesized multiscale reinforcements including microscale SiOC ceramics and nanoscale SiC nanowires are mainly attributed to the initial phase separation of SiOC phase and subsequent solid-phase reaction of SiO and C phases. Compared to SiOC/CBCF composite, the resulting 3D SiC nanowires/SiOC/CBCF hybrid structure exhibited high flexural/tensile strength and fractured strain due to the pull-out and bridging behavior of SiC nanowires. This one-step process supplied a feasible way to synthesize 3D SiC nanowires to reinforce and toughen SiOC-modified CBCF composite.

In this work, expanded graphite (EG) was dispersed inside modified polysiloxane resin and successfully printed various cellular structures with span feature via ultraviolet-thermal field co-assisted direct ink writing . The carbon-rich layer was in-situ deposited in the designed porous structure surface by no gas flow pyrolysis process. The characterization of Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicate that the deposited cladding structure possessed amounts of sp 2 -C, and mainly bonds to the matrix in the manner of Si–C. The presence of cladding structure played a vital role in enhancing the electric conductivity and interface polarization, resulting in excellent microwave absorption performance. The addition of expanded graphite also improved the dielectric property by reinforcing the internal interfacial polarization and achieving a good impedance matching. Finally, the structure reached a minimum reflection loss of −59.31 dB at the thickness of 2.8 mm, and a broadband absorption of 4.2 GHz in the X-band (8.2–12.4 GHz) at 3.1 mm, covering the whole X band. The novelty strategy of controlling the surface state by pyrolysis vapor self-deposition can open a new avenue to tailor the functional characteristic of materials, especially on the assist of direct ink writing which can easy realize complex structural geometry on-demand.

Chiral-rotating gas sensing structures composed of chemiresistive-sensitized SiCuOC have been presented to provide a facile method for reducing the thermal expansion of gas sensors working at high temperatures. The structures can disperse thermal stress by heat-induced torsion of their units while maintaining the dimensional stability of the integral construction. Vat photopolymerization constructed Cu-doped SiOC substrates with a high resolution, while Ag-doped CuO nanoclusters further modified them. Taking advantage of the synergistic sensitization effect of the substrate and the surface sensing layer, the structure exhibited a high response/recovery speed (24/32 s) and a response value of 54.45% to 100 ppm acetone; 97.19% of its initial response was maintained after a long-term detection. The thermal expansion coefficient of the sensing structure reached 1.04 × 10–6/K at the working temperature, revealing a near-zero expansion. Compressive strength and Young’s modulus of the structures were 31.93 MPa and 3.38 GPa, respectively. Meanwhile, the structures realized regular gas detection under pressure (85.02 kPa) and thermal (325 °C) loading, as their high deformation resistance protected the integrity and connection of the surface sensing layer. Thus, the work proved the dimensional stabilization effect of chemiresistive sensing structures with chiral-rotating design, realizing stable gas detection in complex loading environments.

The SiHfOC ceramic microspheres were synthesized from the polysilazane and hafnium(IV) acetylacetonate hybrid precursors through a combination of hydrothermal method and polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs) method. The SiHfOC ceramic microspheres consist of β-SiC, SiO 2 , and m -HfO 2 in an amorphous SiOC matrix and are in a spherical morphology with an average size of about 2 μm. Hafnium-containing nanoparticles with ∼50-nm size are not only uniformly distributed on the surface of the ceramic microspheres but also embedded in the SiHfOC ceramic microspheres, forming a unique mosaic structure. Pyrolyzing at 1000°C offers a possibility of an in situ formation of nanocrystal nuclei in the amorphous SiOC ceramic matrix, and the subsequent annealing at 1500°C helps the small nanocrystal nuclei grow and separate the amorphous SiHfOC into a multiphase SiOC network containing β-SiC, SiO 2 , m -HfO 2 nanocrystalline and free C. This research provides a methodology for preparing multicomponent ceramic microspheres that can efficiently develop high-performance PDCs modified by transition metal alkoxide.
