The wide-bandgap cubic-structure semiconductor In 4 SnSe 4 can be regarded as a product of compositing two typical layered thermoelectric materials SnSe and In 4 Se 3 . Remarkably, In 4 SnSe 4 inherited low thermal conductivity from its parent materials. To advance the potential thermoelectric property of In 4 SnSe 4 , we systematically investigated its crystal structure and the origin of the intrinsic low thermal conductivity. In 4 SnSe 4 crystallized in a cubic phase (space group P a 3 ¯ ), with the lattice parameters of a = b = c = 12.66 Å. The anisotropy of In Se bonds in the lattice determined the complex structure of In 4 SnSe 4 with 72 atoms in the primitive cell. More importantly, sound velocity and elastic properties unclosed the strong anharmonicity in In 4 SnSe 4 , which contributed greatly to the low thermal conductivity. With first-principles calculations, it was found that the lone-pair electrons from In + mainly caused the anharmonicity in the lattice. Additionally, Br was proved to be an effective dopant for In 4 SnSe 4 to improve the electrical transport properties. This work indicated that the complex wide-bandgap semiconductor In 4 SnSe 4 with cubic phase and intrinsic low thermal conductivity was a new promising thermoelectric material with appropriate doping.

Combining GO with Eu-doped SnSe enables exceptional broadband solar absorption and photothermal conversion. • A porous hydrophilic PAM hydrogel substrate facilitates highly efficient water transport and concurrent photon capture. • Excellent salt rejection and water purification capabilities were demonstrated for seawater and dye-containing wastewater. Solar-driven interfacial evaporation technology has attracted considerable attention as a promising strategy to address global freshwater scarcity. However, existing evaporators often suffer from limited solar spectral absorption and unsatisfactory water transport capabilities. Herein, we propose a hydrogel-based evaporator fabricated by incorporating a composite of graphene oxide/europium-doped tin selenide into a polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel. The incorporation of europium ions into SnSe, synergistically combined with graphene oxide, enables highly efficient absorption across the solar spectrum. The hydrophilic PAM hydrogel significantly enhances water transport within the evaporator while promoting multiple internal reflections of sunlight, thereby improving light trapping capability. The resulting system exhibits exceptional evaporation performance, achieving an evaporation rate of 2.25 kg m −2 h −1 and an efficiency of 98.9% under one-sun irradiation. It also demonstrates excellent salt rejection performance, exhibiting its superior performance in water treatment and seawater desalination. The strategy presented in this work, characterized by efficient solar absorption and remarkable water transport, paves the way for advancing sustainable freshwater production technologies. 2D materials are attracting much attention in the field of cathode catalysts for lithium–oxygen batteries (LOBs) due to their layered structure, unique electronic properties, and high stability. However, different stacking layer structures trigger different catalytic capabilities in LOBs. In this work, tin selenide nanosheets with a black phosphorus-like 2D structure are synthesized and used as the cathode catalyst for LOBs. SnSe nanosheets with exposed stack (200) facets and stack edge facets exhibit superior specific capacity over 20 783 mAh g −1 and ultralong cycle stability over 380 cycles at 500 mA g −1 in LOBs. This demonstrates that the growth of discharge products is mainly concentrated on the 2D surface (200) facets, rather than the stack edge facets. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that the confined adsorption of Li 2 O 2 on the stack edge facets of SnSe, due to the 2D layer structure and the unique electron distribution, restricts the growth of discharge products. The 2D surface facets of SnSe benefit for the formation and stabilization of LiO 2 intermediates, leading to the efficient formation/decomposition of discharge products. The findings provide in-depth insight into the elusive electrocatalytic mechanism for 2D layer-structures materials in LOBs.

SnSe-based compounds, as promising thermoelectric materials, are well-known for their intrinsically low thermal conductivity and outstanding thermoelectric performance. However, the suboptimal electrical transport capacity for n-type polycrystalline SnSe significantly hinders the improvement of its thermoelectric performance. In this work, an effective approach for enhancing the thermoelectric performance of n-type SnSe polycrystalline materials through ZnCl2 doping has been investigated. The enhanced density of state effective mass, which is related to the introduction of an impurity level and the facilitation of multivalley degeneracy after ZnCl2 doping, can significantly improve the electrical transport coefficient. Additionally, multiple defects caused by ZnCl2 doping, such as multiscale precipitates, amorphous tin chloride, and twin boundaries, effectively decrease the lattice thermal conductivity, leading to a subsequently enhanced quality factor. As a result, the SnSe0.95–2%ZnCl2 sample achieves a maximum zT of ∼1.3 at 873 K parallel to the pressing direction, being 4 orders higher than that of the pristine SnSe0.95 sample and better than that of most other halide-doped SnSe samples. This study presents a cost-effective and environmentally friendly strategy for improving the thermoelectric properties of n-type polycrystalline SnSe.

Artificial olfaction systems face a fundamental trade-off between device simplicity and discriminative capacity, particularly in detecting target gases within complex mixtures. While biological olfaction leverages dynamic sniffing strategies to enhance selectivity with limited receptors, conventional electronic noses rely on sensor arrays, increasing system complexity and power consumption. Here, we report a bio-inspired pseudo-breathing strategy coupled with a single SnSe/NiO heterojunction sensor to achieve highly selective H 2 S detection in mixed volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) backgrounds. The heterojunction design creates enhanced surface activity and facilitates rapid charge carrier exchange, enabling fast and sensitive operation at room temperature. By implementing rhythmic adsorption-desorption cycles, we generate time-resolved spectral fingerprints that encode analyte-specific information. Combined with pattern recognition algorithms, this approach allows a single sensor to distinguish H 2 S from interfering VSCs in binary/ternary mixtures. This work demonstrates a paradigm for the classification of H 2 S-containing volatile sulfur compound (VSC) mixtures using an actively modulated single sensor, bridging materials innovation and dynamic sensing mechanisms to overcome the limitations of array-based systems.

Tin selenide (SnSe), as a direct bandgap (1.1–1.3 eV) photovoltaic absorber material, has a theoretical power conversion efficiency comparable to commercial thin-film solar technologies. However, the efficiency of experimentally fabricated SnSe solar cells is significantly lower than the theoretical value, mainly constrained by two major bottlenecks: (1) the bulk defects leading to carrier recombination and (2) the bandgap mismatch at the interface. Additionally, the environmental toxicity of the CdS and its parasitic absorption of short-wavelength light also limit the sustainable development. This study proposes and systematically investigates the all-inorganic structure of FTO/Zn(O,S)/SnSe/Carbon. Replacing traditional CdS with Zn(O,S) can achieve tunable bandgaps and eliminate Cd toxicity. Through SCAPS-1D simulation, the thickness and carrier concentration of each functional layer are optimized, and the influences of bulk defect density, interface defect density, and resistance on device performance are analyzed. Meanwhile, the S content in Zn(O,S) is adjusted, and the sulfur enrichment (S content of 70%) induces the best conduction band offset (ΔEc = 0.05 eV). The resulting optimal device exhibits an efficiency of 22.46%, Voc = 0.90 V, Jsc = 30.06 mA/cm2, and FF = 83.39%. This work establishes a universal paradigm combining nontoxic material selection (Zn(O,S)/carbon), interface thermodynamic control, and defect passivation strategies, paving the way for the commercialization of sustainable thin-film solar cells.

Tin chalcogenides are regarded as promising anode materials for potassium ion batteries (PIBs) due to their considerable specific capacity. However, the severe volume effect, limited electronic conductivity, and the shuttle effect of the potassiation product restrict the application prospect. Herein, based on the metal evaporation reaction, a facile structural engineering strategy for yolk–shell SnSe encapsulated in carbon shell (SnSe@C) is proposed. The internal void can accommodate the volume change of the SnSe core and the carbon shell can enhance the electronic conductivity. Combining qualitative and quantitative electrochemical analyses, the distinguished electrochemical performance of SnSe@C anode is attributed to the contribution of enhanced capacitive behavior. Additionally, first-principles calculations elucidate that the heteroatomic doped carbon exhibits a preferable affinity toward potassium ions and the potassiation product K 2 Se, boosting the rate performance and capacity retention consequently. Furthermore, the phase evolution of SnSe@C electrode during the potassiation/depotassiation process is clarified by in situ X-ray diffraction characterization, and the crystal transition from the SnSe Pnma(62) to Cmcm(63) point group is discovered unpredictably. This work demonstrates a pragmatic avenue to tailor the SnSe@C anode via a facile structural engineering strategy and chemical regulation, providing substantial clarification for the phase evolution mechanism of SnSe-based anode for PIBs.

Metal selenides are considered outstanding potential anodic materials of sodium ion batteries due to their large specific capacity. However, their actual application is heavily restricted because of the unfavorable volume expansion, inferior cycling stability, as well as inactive kinetics. To solve this problem, the structure of SnSe@f-Ti3C2 was rationally designed and synthesized via a simple one-pot solvothermal process for the first time in this work. The high-capacity 0D SnSe quantum dots grow in situ and are characterized as homogeneously distributed on the 2D conductive MXene sheet via the electrostatic attraction of Sn ions and MXene. The SnSe@f-Ti3C2 composite exhibits a remarkably increased capacity of 540 mA h g−1 at 0.05 A g−1 and excellent cycle performance of 97.79% retention ratio after 100 cycles at 0.5 A g−1. The outstanding electrochemical performance of the SnSe@f-Ti3C2 hybrid was mainly attributed to the synergy between 0D SnSe with high capacitance and the 2D MXene sheet with superior conductivity. On one hand, 0D SnSes act as pillars between MXene layers in order to prevent the stacking of MXene nanosheets. On the other hand, the fast electron/ion transport capability and large specific surface area provided by MXene as a conductive skeleton facilitates favorable transfer kinetics as well as close contact in the electrolyte/electrode interface.

SnSe demonstrates unparalleled potential in thermoelectric applications, combining non-toxicity, low cost, and abundant sources. Furthermore, polycrystals have good machinability and are easier to prepare. Here, we report a high peak ZT of 2.0 at 873 K in Pb and Er co-doped polycrystalline SnSe prepared through the hydrothermal method. An ultralow lattice thermal conductivity of 0.13 W m−1 K−1 at 873 K is obtained by introducing endogenous hetero-/homo-structural nanoprecipitates and Sn vacancies into the matrix to construct a multiscale scattering structure for phonons. Meanwhile, with the band alignment and flattening induced by Pb and Er co-doping, the effective mass is increased thus leading to a large Seebeck coefficient. Pb and Er co-doping not only optimizes the energy band structure of SnSe, but also optimizes the carrier concentration, thus simultaneously leading to enhanced electrical conductivity as well as enhanced electrical transport properties. Therefore, a high peak ZT of 2.0 is achieved in Pb and Er co-doped polycrystalline SnSe due to the markedly ultralow thermal conductivity and enhanced power factor. This work proposes a novel approach to synergistically regulate the electrical and thermal transport properties of polycrystalline SnSe-based thermoelectric materials through constructing endogenous hetero-/homo-nanostructures combined with band alignment.

Solar-powered water evaporation as a clean and abundant renewable energy-efficient desalination technology provides a promising strategy to solve the shortage of freshwater resources. However, the development and application of solar vapor technology are hindered by the relatively low near-infrared photothermal conversion efficiency of existing materials and the lack of effective improvement strategies. In this work, the conductivity characteristics of 2D semiconductors are capitalized on the high visible light absorption and ultra-low thermal. Specifically, rare-earth ion dopants into SnSe nanosheets, significantly boosting their near-infrared photothermal conversion efficiency and solar water evaporation performance are introduced. Remarkably, the photothermal conversion efficiency of the doped SnSe nanosheets surged from 51.56% to 82.11%, surpassing many previously reported photothermal materials. Furthermore, leveraging these nanosheets with enhanced photothermal conversion efficiency, a solar interfacial evaporation system is constructed. The evaporation rate of 2.17 kg m −2 h −1 and the efficiency of 96.5% can be achieved at one solar irradiance, and it also has good salt-resistance properties. The findings demonstrate the potential of rare earth ion-doped 2D semiconductor nanosheets in solar water evaporation, paving the way for future sustainable desalination solutions.

The poor reversibility of the first conversion reaction (SnO2 + 4Li+ + 4e− → Sn + 2Li2O) and the inferior electrical conductivity of the resulting Li2O make tin oxides not make full use of their lithium storage performance. In this study, various amounts of SnSe nanorods were in situ incorporated into SnOx@CNFs via electrospinning and thermal treatment processes. Binder-free SnSe/SnOx@CNFs exhibit a greatly enhanced lithium-ion storage performance due to their higher electrical conductivity, faster Li-ion diffusivity, and better reversible ability. The optimal SnSe/SnOx@CNFs exhibited a higher initial coulombic efficiency (86.5%) and better reversible capacity (740.7 mA h g−1 at 200 mA g−1 after 70 cycles) than pristine SnOx@CNFs (68.1%, 552 mA h g−1 at 200 mA g−1 after 70 cycles). Moreover, the high capacity of the SnSe/SnOx@CNF electrode can be maintained as high as 345 mA h g−1 at 1 A g−1 over 1000 cycles, demonstrating its robust long-term stability. This work provides new insights for designing high-performance tin-based anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.
