Enhancing fruit preservation with sodium alginate films incorporating propolis extract and graphene oxide

Junyan Guo,Mohammad Rizwan Khan,Naushad Ahmad,Wanli Zhang

In this work, sodium alginate (SA) composite films containing propolis extract (PRO) and graphene oxide (GO) were developed. Subsequently, the effects of PRO and GO on different properties of SA composite films were studied, and the films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis. The PRO release properties and fruit preservation performance of the developed composite films were also investigated. The results showed that the incorporation of PRO resulted in a 51.16% increase in tensile strength. The simultaneous incorporation of PRO and GO reduced water vapor permeability (WVP) by 22.56% compared to the SA film. The temperatures at which the SA/GO/PRO film lost 5% of its weight were 8.0°C higher than those of the SA film. The incorporation of GO into the SA/PRO composite film also modulates the release of PRO. Furthermore, the incorporation of PRO and GO improved the tensile strength of the SA film, as reflected in the microstructure of the films. The reduced WVP of the SA composite film allowed the packaged blueberries to exhibit less weight loss and shrinkage, thereby prolonging their shelf life.

Fabrication of pH-responsive whey protein/sodium alginate composite hydrogel beads for theaflavins

Yeexuan Tan,Sookwah Chan,Beiqi Wu,Hongxin Wang,Zaixiang Lou

In this study, pH-responsive whey protein (WP)/sodium alginate (SA) composite hydrogel beads using the ionic gelation method were described and evaluated for their potential as delivery carriers for theaflavin (TF). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the interaction between WP and SA in the hydrogel beads is driven primarily by the strong intermolecular interactions, including hydrogen bonding and electrostatic attractions. The swelling ratio of the beads possesses good pH dependence and pH reversibility, effectively preventing the release of TF in the gastric environment. The encapsulation efficiency (EE) of TF in hydrogel beads ranged from 94.995 ± 0.03 to 95.709 ± 0.14, with a loading capacity (LC) of 27–34 mg/g. In in vitro digestion simulations, owing to the pH responsiveness, hydrogel beads released minimal TF throughout gastric digestion and were fully released in the intestine phase. Additionally, the release kinetics of TF from the beads were further examined in a simulated intestinal environment. These findings suggest that the hydrogel bead system is a promising carrier for encapsulating TF, offering a theoretical and experimental basis for its future application in the food industry.

Drug-loading three-dimensional scaffolds based on hydroxyapatite-sodium alginate for bone regeneration

Tingting Liang,Jingwen Wu,Fuyao Li,Zhu Huang,Yixing Pi,Guohou Miao,Wen Ren,Tiantao Liu,Qianzhou Jiang,Lvhua Guo

Bone tissue engineering is a promising approach for tackling clinical challenges. Osteoprogenitor cells, osteogenic factors, and osteoinductive/osteoconductive scaffolds are employed in bone tissue engineering. However, scaffold materials remain limited due to their source, low biocompatibility, and so on. In this study, a composite hydrogel scaffold composed of hydroxyapatite (HA) and sodium alginate (SA) was manufactured using three-dimensional printing. Naringin (NG) and calcitonin-gene-related peptide (CGRP) were used as osteogenic factors in the fabrication of drug-loaded scaffolds. Investigation using animal experiments, as well as scanning electron microscopy, cell counting kit-8 testing, alkaline phosphatase staining, and alizarin red-D staining of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell culture showed that the three scaffolds displayed similar physicochemical properties and that the HA/SA/NG and HA/SA/CGRP scaffolds displayed better osteogenesis than that of the HA/SA scaffold. Thus, the HA/SA scaffold could be a biocompatible material with potential applications in bone regeneration. Meanwhile, NG and CGRP doping could result in better and more positive proliferation and differentiation.

Fe3O4 Nanoparticles Embedded Sodium Alginate/PVP/Calcium Gel Composite for Removal of Cd2+

Long Jiao,Peishi Qi,Yunzhi Liu,Bo Wang,Lili Shan

Magnetic ferroferric oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles embedded sodium alginate (SA)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)/calciumgel composites (MSPC) were synthesized for the removal of Cd2+. The physicochemical properties of the composite gel ball were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), power X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Quantitative adsorptions experiments were performed in view of sorbent dosage, pH, contact time, and temperature. Results showed that the optimum quantity of particles was 1.2 gL−1, when the Cd2+ concentration was fixed at 150 mg/L. The optimum pH for adsorption is 6.2. When the initial Cd2+ concentration was from 50 to 200 mgL−1, the adsorption equilibrium time was 80–120 minutes. The isotherms results showed the maximum sorption was 97.8 mg/g calculated from the Langmuir isotherm. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model could be well described by the sorption of Cd2+ in the sediment. The correlation coefficients (R2) were all higher than 0.96. Results showed that MSPC was a practical and low-cost material for heavy metal removal from the river sediment and simultaneously solves the problems in convenient separation under additional magnetic field.

Supercritical carbon dioxide assisted fabrication of biomimetic sodium alginate/silk fibroin nanofibrous scaffolds

Zhi-Yuan Meng,Li Wang,Lin-Yi Shen,Ze-Hao Li,Zheng Zhao,Xin-Yu Wang

In this study, biomimetic sodium alginate (SA)/silk fibroin (SF) scaffolds were successfully fabricated by supercritical CO 2 technology. The SA/SF scaffolds exhibited an interconnected porous and extracellular matrix (ECM)-like nanofibrous structures. Moreover, the SA microparticles were embedded in the SF scaffolds. Increasing the content of SA microparticles could improve tensile strength and compressive strength of the SF scaffolds and reduce the porosity of the SF scaffolds. The addition of the SA microparticles could also regulate the degradation rate of the SA/SF scaffolds. Furthermore, the results of in vitro biocompatibility evaluation, indicated that the SA/SF scaffolds exhibited no obvious cytotoxicity and higher cell adhesion ability and were more favorable for L929 fibroblasts proliferation than pure SF scaffolds. Therefore, the SA/SF scaffolds with ECM-like nanofibrous and interconnected porous structure have potential application in skin tissue engineering.

Preparation and properties of drug-carrying microspheres of konjac glucomannan/sodium alginate/hydroxyapatite

Yanjun Li,Jia Liu,Laijun Yao

Bone tissue engineering microspheres have become a prominent focus in bone repair research. This is due to their potential for targeted therapy and controlled drug release. The current research direction of bone tissue engineering microspheres primarily emphasizes composite microspheres. In this context, konjac glucomannan (KGM) has emerged as a promising composite microsphere preparation material for bone tissue engineering due to its exceptional water-absorbing and swelling properties, as well as its high biocompatibility. In order to expand the application of KGM in the field of bone tissue engineering, microspheres were designed and prepared in this paper by using KGM, hydroxyapatite (HA), and sodium alginate (SA). The quaternary amination modification of KGM was carried out to prepare the white flocculated Cationic Konjac Glucomannan (CKGM). CKGM was prepared in an amorphous state, and FT-IR and 1 H NMR results proved the successful synthesis of CKGM. The preparation of KGM/SA/HA and CKGM/SA/HA microspheres with rough surfaces involved emulsification, cross-linking, and coating methods. These microspheres exhibited absorption peaks for SA and CKGM. In addition, the XRD diffraction peaks of the two were found to be essentially identical to those of HA. The experimental results demonstrated that the drug release process of both drug-carrying microspheres was pH-responsive, with a direct correlation between the pH level and the cumulative release rate, with lower pH values corresponding to higher release rates. And the cumulative release rate of CKGM/SA/HA@DOX microspheres was slightly lower than that of KGM/SA/HA@DOX microspheres. Secondly, both microspheres had good biocompatibility, thermal stability and bacteriostatic properties.

Preparation and characterization of hydrophobically-modified sodium alginate derivatives as carriers for fucoxanthin

Lingyu Han,Ruiyi Zhai,Bing Hu,Peter A. Williams,Jixin Yang,Cunzhi Zhang,Nuo Dong,Tingting Li

Micelles are nano-architectured structures capable of encapsulating hydrophobic substances in aqueous solutions, thereby improving their stability, solubility, and bioavailability to control the release of bioactive compounds. In this study, the sodium alginate backbone was modified via a hydrophobic modification scheme where octyl chains were covalently attached to the alginate chains via esterification reactions. Fourier-transformed infrared spectrometry (FTIR), 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to characterize the structure of the sodium alginate derivatives of varying molar mass (ALG-C8). Fluorescence spectroscopy, surface tension measurements, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were employed to assess the self-assembly performance of ALG-C8. The three methods produced consistent results, indicating that self-assembly decreased with higher molar mass. The self-assembled ALG-C8 micelles were utilized to encapsulate fucoxanthin. The loading capacity (LC) and encapsulation efficiency (EE) were determined using UV–Vis spectrophotometry. The molar mass of ALG-C8 has a key influence on fucoxanthin loading and release behavior. The ALG-C8 molecules with the lowest molar mass produced micelles with the smallest hydration diameter, resulting in the highest LC and EE. Furthermore, the release of fucoxanthin is significantly influenced by the pH and ionic strength of the medium. ALG-C8 micellar-like aggregates exhibit resistance to low pH and high ionic strength environments, releasing encapsulated material at the target site under alkaline conditions. Therefore, synthesized ALG-C8 is a potential candidate for preparing pH-responsive self-assembled micellar-like aggregates, enabling targeted delivery and gradual release of hydrophobic functional food components.

Polydopamine-modified sodium alginate hydrogel for microplastics removal: Adsorption performance, characteristics, and kinetics

Mengzhen Han,Zihan Wang,Ziyue Xie,Mengxin Hou,Zhenpeng Gao

The potential health hazards of micro/nanoplastics in food have become a significant concern. This study developed a Polydopamine-modified sodium alginate hydrogel (PMSAH) for removing microplastics in daily drinking water. The hydrogel's performance, characteristics, and kinetics for microplastic removal were systematically evaluated. Results demonstrated that the incorporation of polydopamine reduced the hydrogel's surface zeta potential and increased its adsorption capacity for microplastics. PMSAH5 exhibited the highest removal efficiency, reaching approximately 99.6 %. Additionally, polydopamine-modified sodium alginate hydrogel exhibited higher elasticity and thermal stability. The hydrogel successfully adsorbed microplastics, regardless of their size and surface charge. This adsorption was driven by the combined action of multiple forces, resulting in multilayer adsorption. The unique advantages of polydopamine-mediated multi-molecular interactions present a promising and environmentally friendly approach for effective removal of microplastics in daily drinking water.

Sodium alginate/carboxycellulose/polydopamine composite microspheres for rapid hemostasis of deep irregular wounds

Junjie Hu,Yinchun Hu,Min Kang,Xuanyu Liu,Baogang Wu,Lining Wang,Yan Wei,Di Huang

Hemostasis of deep irregular wounds is a severe problem in clinical practice. The development of rapid-acting hemostatic agents for deep and irregular wound is urgently needed. Here, sodium alginate/carboxycellulose/polydopamine (SA/CNF/PDA) microspheres was prepared by reverse emulsification and crosslinking with Ca 2+ , and SA/CNF/PDA composite hemostatic microspheres with porous structure were obtained by freeze-drying. SA/CNF/PDA composite hemostatic microspheres exhibited excellent porosity and water absorption which could rapidly absorb blood on the wound surface. Moreover, SA/CNF/PDA composite microspheres demonstrated remarkable hemostatic capabilities both in vitro and in vivo. It exhibited strong hemostatic performance in models of mouse tail-break and liver damage. Especially in liver injury model, it was completely hemostatic in 95 s, and blood loss (19.3 mg). The hemostatic efficacy of the SA/CNF/PDA composite microspheres was amplified through the stimulation of both exogenous and endogenous coagulation pathways. Therefore, SA/CNF/PDA composite hemostatic microspheres are suitable for rapid hemostasis of deep irregular wounds which are potential rapid hemostatic material for surgical application.

Sodium alginate/ Al2O3 fiber nanocomposite aerogel with thermal insulation and flame retardancy properties

Huan Xu,Cui Liu,Wei Guo,Nian Li,Yang Chen,Xiaolin Meng,Mengjie Zhai,Shudong Zhang,Zhenyang Wang

The severe environmental pollution issues require the urgent development of new green building insulation materials. Biomass aerogel is deemed as an optimal candidate to replace petroleum-based insulation materials owing to its significant advantages such as low thermal conductivity, eco-friendliness, and high biocompatibility. The interaction of the composite two-phase interface and the fabrication of multilevel pore structures have a significant impact on the comprehensive performance of aerogel applications. In this study, a tunable double-crosslinked network skeleton structure construction of sodium alginate (SA) composite with Al 2 O 3 fibers is proposed, where Ca 2+ induces the sol–gel transition to form a second layer of strong bonding force to effectively support the skeleton structure, and various cross-linking modes, such as ionic bonding, hydrogen bonding and physical cross-linking, are used to synergistically improve the SA aerogel and endow it with multifunctionality. The prepared Al 2 O 3 fiber/SA (SAA) aerogels achieve excellent flame retardancy and self-extinguishing smoke suppression (peak heat release rate as low as 9.7 kW m −2 , and total smoke release rate in the low range of 0.5 m 2  m −2 ). It also has superior mechanical strength (high specific compression modulus of ∼53.3 KN m kg −1 ) and can withstand weights over 2600 times its own weight without deformation, besides the broad range of self-cleaning properties and outstanding biocompatibility. The creation of a double-crosslinked three-dimensional aerogel network via reinforcement of inorganic electrospun fibers provides new insights for eco-friendly insulation materials in construction.

Immobilization of Horseradish Peroxidase and Myoglobin Using Sodium Alginate for Treating Organic Pollutants

Xinyu Wang,Hossein Ghanizadeh,Shoaib Khan,Xiaodan Wu,Haowei Li,Samreen Sadiq,Jiayin Liu,Huimin Liu,Qunfeng Yue

Removing organic pollutants from wastewater is crucial to prevent environmental contamination and protect human health. Immobilized enzymes are increasingly being explored for wastewater treatment due to their specific catalytic activities, reusability, and stability under various environmental conditions. Peroxidases, such as horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and myoglobin (Mb), are promising candidates for immobilized enzymes utilized in wastewater treatment due to their ability to facilitate the oxidation process of a wide range of organic molecules. However, the properties of the carrier and support materials greatly influence the stability and activity of immobilized HRP and Mb. In this research, we developed immobilized HRP and Mb using support material composed of sodium alginate and CaCl2as carriers and glutaraldehyde as a crosslinking agent. Following this, the efficacy of immobilized HRP and Mb in removing aniline, phenol, and p-nitrophenol was assessed. Both immobilized enzymes removed all three organic pollutants from an aqueous solution, but Mb was more effective than HRP. After being immobilized, both enzymes became more resilient to changes in temperature and pH. Both immobilized enzymes retained their ability to eliminate organic pollutants through eight treatment cycles. Our study uncovered novel immobilized enzyme microspheres and demonstrated their successful application in wastewater treatment, paving the way for future research.
