To address the issue that B 4 C ceramics are difficult to be wetted by aluminum metals in the composites, TiB 2 was introduced via an in-situ reaction between TiH 2 and B 4 C to regulate their wettability and interfacial bonding. By pressure infiltration of the molten alloy into the freeze-cast porous ceramic skeleton, the 2024Al/B 4 C–TiB 2 composites with a laminate-reticular hierarchical structure were produced. Compared with 2024Al/B 4 C composite, adding initial TiH 2 improved the flexural strength and valid fracture toughness from (484±27) to (665±30) MPa and (19.3±1.5) to (32.7±1.8) MPa·m 1/2 , respectively. This exceptional damage resistance ability was derived from multiple extrinsic toughening mechanisms including uncracked-ligament bridging, crack branching, crack propagation and crack blunting, and more importantly, the fracture model transition from single to multiple crack propagation. This strategy opens a pathway for improving the wettability and interfacial bonding of Al/B 4 C composites, and thus produces nacre-inspired materials with optimized damage tolerance.

Boron carbide (B 4 C) ceramics exhibit exceptional hardness and low density, making them promising candidates for structural applications in extreme environments. However, their widespread adoption is hindered by poor sinterability and low fracture toughness. Balancing hardness, strength, and toughness in B 4 C ceramics remains a significant challenge owing to the inherent trade-offs among these properties. To overcome this, a fine and uniform dual-grained B 4 C–TiB 2 composite was fabricated by in-situ reactive sintering of TiO 2 , graphite, and a bimodal B 4 C powder. A two-step ball-milling process during powder preparation was pivotal in eliminating TiB 2 agglomeration and ensuring microstructural homogeneity. The resultant composite achieved a synergistic enhancement in flexural strength (786 ± 51 MPa), fracture toughness (5.66 ± 1.44 MPa·m 1/2 ), and Vickers hardness (35.5 ± 1.1 GPa). The high strength and hardness are attributed to pronounced grain refinement and low open porosity. The enhanced toughness originates from synergistic mechanisms: crack-inhibiting compressive residual stress and transition to a mixed transgranular/intergranular fracture mode facilitated by locally concentrated sub-micron B 4 C grains. It is demonstrated that grain-size engineering by powder design is a viable strategy for developing lightweight ceramic composites with a superior balance of strength, hardness, and toughness.

LiBH4–MgH2 system in a 2 : 1 molar ratio constitutes a representative reactive hydride composite (RHC) for hydrogen storage. However, sluggish kinetics and poor reversibility hinder the practical applications. To ease these problems, amorphous TiB2 and NbB2 nanoparticles were synthesized and employed as catalysts for the 2LiBH4–MgH2 system. Isothermal de-/rehydrogenation and temperature programmed mass spectrometry (MS) measurements show that amorphous TiB2 and NbB2 nanoparticles can significantly improve the hydrogen storage performance of the 2LiBH4–MgH2 system. 9 wt% hydrogen can be released within only 6 min for nanoTiB2-doped 2LiBH4–MgH2, while for the undoped composite limited hydrogen of 3.9 wt% is released in 300 min at 400 °C. The dehydrogenation activation energies for the first and second steps are dramatically reduced by 40.4 kJ mol−1 and 35.2 kJ mol−1 after doping with nanoTiB2. It is believed that TiB2 and NbB2 nanoparticles can first catalyze the dehydrogenation of MgH2, and then induce the decomposition of LiBH4 and meanwhile act as nucleation agents for MgB2, thereby greatly enhancing the kinetics of dehydrogenation. The present study gives clear evidence for the significant performance of transition metal boride species in doped RHCs, which is critically important for understanding the mechanism and further improving the hydrogen storage properties of RHCs.

Boron carbide (B 4 C) ceramic composites with excellent mechanical properties were fabricated by hot-pressing using B 4 C, silicon carbide (SiC), titanium boride (TiB 2 ), and magnesium aluminum silicate (MAS) as raw materials. The influences of SiC and TiB 2 content on the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of the composites were systematically investigated. The mechanism by which MAS promotes the sintering process of composites was also investigated. MAS exists in composites in the form of amorphous phase. It can effectively remove the oxide layer from the surface of ceramic particles during the high temperature sintering process. The typical values of relative density, hardness, bending strength, and fracture toughness of B 4 C–SiC–TiB 2 composites are 99.6%, 32.61 GPa, 434 MPa, and 6.20 MPa m 1/2 , respectively. Based on the microstructure observations and finite element modeling, the operative toughening mechanism is mainly attributed to the crack deflection along the grain boundary, which results from the residual stress field generated by the thermal expansion mismatch between B 4 C and TiB 2 phase.

Strengthening interface bonding for superior mechanical/ablation performances of SiC-based aerospace vehicle components remains a major challenge. Attractively, polycarbosilane-vinyltriethoxysilane-graphene oxide with addition of TiN/B (PVG(TiN, B)) were successfully synthesized for the first time. An ingenious route via re-pyrolyzing ball-milling-induced SiC(rGO, TiB 2 ) p fillers/PVG(TiN, B) precursors blends was introduced to prepare lightweight SiC(rGO, TiB 2 ) composite polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs). Interestingly, both SiC(rGO, TiB 2 ) p and PVG(TiN, B) pyrolysis products, composed of β-SiC/SiO x C y /C free (rGO, TiB 2 ), are tightly coupled by each other owing to plentiful Si-dangling bonds. In-situ formed intergranular TiB 2 /B 4 C, well compatible with amorphous ceramic network, can prevent β-SiC grain growth, strengthen interface bonding, and even hinder further crack propagation along the grain boundaries. Particularly, samples re-pyrolyzed at 1300 °C possess unique combination of good hardness (5.44 GPa), excellent fracture toughness (4.70 MPa·m 1/2 ), high flexural strength (41.90 MPa) and outstanding compressive strength (126.33 MPa). Improved high-temperature and ablation resistance gives them distinct advantages of interlocked microstructure under exposure of butane flame. As demonstrated, SiC(rGO, TiB 2 ) composite PDCs were developed into porous ceramics with good thermal insulation , focusing on manufacturing large-size bulk PDCs for thermal protection system of hypersonic vehicles.

Water contact angle of 1:2 CTF/TiB 2 superhydrophilic functionalized membrane is 3.6° • Schottky junction was formed with the combination of TiB 2 and CTF • Reactive species of •OH and 1 O₂ under simulated sunlight irradiation was produced • Excellent a self-cleaning characteristics and high permeability was achieved • Real secondary effluent application validated the practical use of this membrane Membrane separation is promising for emerging contaminants removal as an advanced treatment process, but most of the photocatalytic membrane is hydrophobic with severe fouling and permeability loss after filtration. Herein, a novel superhydrophilic CTF/TiB 2 functionalized membrane was developed, which can efficiently remove typical pharmaceutical pollutants with self-cleaning characteristics. The water contact angle of the pristine membrane dramatically reduced from 76.6° to 3.6° with CTF/TiB 2 (mass ratio 1:2) incorporation. The optimized 1:2 CTF/TiB 2 membrane demonstrated outstanding performance for typical pharmaceutical contaminants, achieving high removal efficiencies of 92% for trimethoprim (TMP) and > 97% for chloroquine (CLQ). Mechanistic studies reveal that the CTF/TiB 2 modified membrane exhibits outstanding chemical adsorption properties, enriching pollutants on the membrane surface with an adsorption capacity of 73.16 mg/g. The Schottky junction formed by the modified membrane, as evidenced by band structure analysis and DFT calculations, efficiently generates reactive species including •OH and 1 O₂ under simulated sunlight irradiation, facilitating photocatalytic degradation of pollutants both on the membrane surface and in the aqueous solution. The functionalized membrane also showed excellent self-cleaning characteristics with lower membrane fouling propensity and stable permeability. Furthermore, the successful treatment of real secondary effluent validated the practical potential of this functionalized membrane. Overall, this work successfully fabricates a novel CTF/TiB 2 multifunctional catalytic membrane with effective typical pharmaceutical removal and self-cleaning features, suggesting that it is a promising advanced wastewater treatment technology. Conventional antibacterial materials
face challenges
in simultaneously
integrating efficient antibacterial activity, rapid hemostasis, and
high biocompatibility. Herein, we report a rationally designed composite
sponge (TGSS) composed of a highly porous gelatin/sodium alginate
(Gel/SA) matrix decorated with titanium diboride nanosheets (TiB 2 NSs). The TiB 2 NSs not only endow the TGSS with
efficient near-infrared (NIR)-triggered photothermal conversion for
localized thermal ablation of bacteria but also confer Fenton-like
catalytic activity that converts endogenous H 2 O 2 into cytotoxic hydroxyl radicals (·OH), enabling selective
oxidative damage to microbial cells. Owing to photothermal–chemodynamic
synergy, TGSS achieves exceptional antibacterial performance with
99.09% inhibition against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and 99.99% against Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) under NIR irradiation. Concurrently, the highly porous Gel/SA scaffold
promotes rapid blood coagulation via intrinsic pathway activation
and physical adsorption, resulting in significantly reduced bleeding
time and blood loss. Importantly, the polymeric matrix effectively
immobilizes TiB 2 nanosheets (TiB 2 NSs), suppressing
nanoparticle leaching and thereby mitigating potential nanotoxicity.
Furthermore, TGSS demonstrated favorable biocompatibility, as evidenced
by a hemolysis rate below 5% and cell viability maintained above 90%
after 48 h in cytotoxicity assays. Collectively, TGSS effectively
prevents bacterial infection and accelerates blood coagulation, showcasing
significant potential as a multifunctional wound dressing.

In this paper, an Al/TiB 2 layered composite was prepared by plasma spraying for use as the base material to reduce resistivity and improve electrochemical performance in an electrode. The β-PbO 2 coating was prepared by electrochemical deposition . Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to study the Al/TiB 2 composite and the β-PbO 2 coating. The electrochemical performance of the Al/TiB 2 /β-PbO 2 and Ti/β-PbO 2 composites was studied by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), Tafel polarization curves (Tafel) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results indicate that Al/TiB 2 /β-PbO 2 composite electrode materials with a uniform structure were successfully prepared by plasma spraying and electrochemical deposition. The structure of the Al/TiB 2 composite improves the conductivity of the electrode matrix, the optimal value of conductivity is 2.76 × 10 7 S m −1 , and the optimal value of density is 8.758 g cm −3 for β-PbO 2 coating. The composite also decreases the charge resistance in the double layer structure of the electrode surface, accelerating the charge transfer rate. Compared with the Ti matrix, the Al/TiB 2 /β-PbO 2 exhibited the best corrosion-resistant performance and electrochemical catalytic activity for electrowinning of nonferrous metals .

B 4 C–TiB 2 composites with enhanced mechanical properties were fabricated by a hydrolysis-based coating process, followed by ball milling with stainless-steel media, and consolidated by reactive hot pressing. Milling with 9Cr18 stainless-steel balls introduced Fe–Cr debris, which generated a liquid phase during sintering, promoting the formation of coarse, plate-like (Ti,Cr)B 2 solid-solution grains and a newly formed FeB phase. The optimal flexural strength of 745.7 ± 37 MPa is achieved, attributed to solid-solution strengthening and improved microstructural homogeneity. Meanwhile, the highest fracture toughness and Vickers hardness of 5.40 ± 0.28 MPa m 1/2 and 37.4 ± 1.3 GPa are achieved when the milling time is prolonged to 3 h, representing a 27% and 9.67% improvement, respectively, compared to the composites without ball-milling treatment. These results demonstrate that controlled introduction of Fe–Cr debris by stainless-steel ball milling enables simultaneous enhancement of flexural strength, fracture toughness, and hardness in B 4 C–TiB 2 composites through liquid-phase sintering.

Plasmonic TiB₂@Ag composite dip-coated fabric enables multifunctional smart textiles. • Hierarchical micro-nano asperities impart superhydrophobicity (WCA > 160°) with broad solar absorption. • Rapid photothermal de-icing at −20 °C within 83 s and prolonged freezing delay (∼612 s). • Surface temperature reaches ∼79 °C under 1 sun with ∼72% de-icing efficiency. • Durable, breathable fabric exhibits ≥90% bacterial anti-adhesion with good biocompatibility. Developing ice-resistant, multifunctional fabrics for cold, humid environments remains challenging, particularly in achieving high photothermal efficiency, superhydrophobicity, bacterial anti-adhesion, and mechanical durability without compromising breathability and flexibility. Herein, we report a titanium diboride @ silver (TiB 2 @Ag) composite coating deposited on a nonwoven fabric via a simple dip-coating approach for photothermally driven anti-icing and de-icing performances at low temperatures. The resulting coating surface exhibits hierarchical micro-nanostructured asperities, formed by TiB 2 nanosheets decorated with Ag nanoparticles within a hydrophobic polymer matrix, imparting an excellent anti-wetting surface (water contact angle >160°). The incorporation of plasmonic Ag nanoparticles, combined with strong broadband solar absorption (>90% across 300–2500 nm), synergistically enhances the photothermal conversion performance. Therefore, the functional fabrics show a substantial freezing delay (∼612 s) and rapid de-icing at −20 °C within 83.2 s, achieving a de-icing efficiency of 72%. Under 1 sun irradiation, the surface temperature rises to ∼79 °C within 600 s. The coating also demonstrates excellent bacterial anti-adhesion ability (≥ 90% reduction against E. coli and S. aureus ) with minimal cytotoxicity (>99% cell viability). Importantly, the coated fabrics retain superhydrophobicity (>155°) after repeated sandpaper abrasion and washing cycles, indicating strong coating durability. This fabric exhibits appreciable mechanical resilience (32 MPa at 20% strain, stable after 300 bending cycles) and chemical stability while maintaining flexibility and air permeability for long-term durability. This work provides an effective strategy for designing durable multifunctional textiles with enhanced photothermal anti-icing/de-icing performance for operation in cold environments. Titanium-based materials hold great biomedical potential owing to excellent biocompatibility. But titanium diboride (TiB 2 ), an emerging metal boride, is rarely explored for antitumor use, and developing multifunctional TiB 2 -based nanoplatforms with enhanced catalytic activity is urgently needed. Herein, we constructed a nanoplatform (TiB 2 -PEG-DOX) by modifying TiB 2 nanosheets (TiB 2 NSs) with amino polyethylene glycol (NH 2 -PEG-NH 2 ) and loading doxorubicin (DOX) via electrostatic interaction. We first clarified the boron (B)-mediated Ti valence cycle: B regulates Ti electron transfer, promotes Ti 4+ reduction to Ti 2+ , enhancing H 2 O 2 -rich tumor microenvironment Fenton-like reaction to generate cytotoxic •OH for chemodynamic therapy (CDT). Meanwhile, TiB 2 -PEG-DOX shows 53.53% photothermal conversion efficiency under 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) irradiation for efficient photothermal therapy (PTT), and NIR further triggers on-demand DOX release. DOX accumulates at tumor sites via the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect to exert chemotherapy (CT). In vitro, it eliminates 86.32% of HCT-116 colorectal cancer cells via CDT/PTT/CT synergy; in vivo, it achieves nearly complete tumor ablation in mice with excellent biocompatibility. This work provides a high-performance synergistic antitumor platform and establishes a B-modulated metal valence cycling paradigm, paving the way for titanium-based nanomedicines.
