Solvent-Dependent Mn Doping: Profound Effects on Microstructure and Enhanced Photothermal/Photodynamic Performance in W18O49 Diversified System

Xuejiao Li,Yuxiao Wang,Haiyang Fu,Jiamin Cheng,Bo Li,Zilong Xu,Na Fan,Rui Li,Lianwei Shan,Xin Liu,Limin Dong,Hongrui Ji,Piaoping Yang

The development of efficient photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) agents is crucial for overcoming the limitations of traditional cancer treatments, such as the need for single wavelength and the limited penetration depth of excitation light. The tumor microenvironment (TME), characterized by low oxygen levels and an overabundance of endogenous hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), further complicates the therapeutic efficacy. In this study, we synthesized a series of Mn-doped W18O49 materials using a one-step solvothermal method, systematically varying the solvents with n-propanol and isopropanol and manganese doping levels. The effects of solvent type and doping amount on crystal structures, morphology and photo conversion performance were investigated in detail. Under single-wavelength near-infrared (NIR) irradiation at 808/1064 nm, the synthesized materials demonstrated simultaneous hyperthermia and singlet oxygen (1O2) generation, enabling both PTT and PDT. Notably, the Mn-doped W18O49 materials accumulated in the TME could catalyze the conversion of H2O2 into O2, thereby enhancing the production of 1O2 and resulting in a self-amplifying therapeutic effect. This synergistic enhancement of PTT and PDT was further corroborated by in vitro studies, which showed significant inhibitory effects on cancer cell proliferation. Our findings demonstrate that solvent-dependent Mn doping profoundly affects the microstructure and phototherapeutic performance of W18O49 materials, providing a novel strategy for developing advanced PTT/PDT agents activated by single NIR irradiation and responsive to the TME.

Low-Temperature Plasma-Constructed Ni-Doped W18O49 Nanorod Arrays for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution and Urea Oxidation

Qingdong Ruan,Jinyuan Liu,Dan Li,Xiaolin Zhang,Liangliang Liu,Chao Huang,Bin Wang,Paul K. Chu

Surface engineering by doping and amorphization is receiving widespread attention from the perspective of the regulation of the electrocatalytic activities of electrocatalysts. However, the effective modulation of active sites on catalysts is still challenging. Herein, a straightforward and efficient method combining hydrothermal treatment with low-temperature plasma processing is presented to synthesize Ni-doped W18O49 nanorod arrays on carbon cloth with abundant oxygen vacancies (CC/WO-Ni-x). Mild plasma doping with Ni modifies the electronic structure of the W18O49 nanorod arrays, resulting in the formation of an amorphous structure that significantly reduces the electron transfer resistance. Additionally, the coupling with high-valent W6+ (derived from W18O49) leads to the partial preoxidation of doped Ni to form active Ni3+ species and oxygen vacancies. These features are collectively responsible for the remarkable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR) properties of CC/WO-Ni-4, for example, 10 mA cm–2 current density, an overpotential of 265 mV required for the OER under 1.0 M KOH solution. The addition of 500 mM urea to the 1.0 M KOH solution decreases the overpotential required for the same current density from 265 to 93 mV. This study provides insights into the modification of surface structures and presents an effective strategy to optimize the electrocatalytic active sites and enhance the efficiency of multifunctional electrocatalysts.

Cuprous ion (Cu+) doping induced surface/interface engineering for enhancing the CO2 photoreduction capability of W18O49 nanowires

Mengmeng Zhang,Gang Cheng,Yi Wei,Zhipan Wen,Rong Chen,Jinyan Xiong,Weijie Li,Chao Han,Zhen Li

Solar-driven reduction of CO 2 and H 2 O into fuels is a promising approach for addressing global warming and energy crisis. Herein, Cu + doped W 18 O 49 nanowires were prepared by a facile solvothermal method and applied in photocatalytic reduction of CO 2 . The composition and structure of pristine and Cu + doped W 18 O 49 samples have been characterized. It was found that the morphology of W 18 O 49 nanowires was changed with increasing amounts of dopant . The photocatalytic CO 2 reduction activity of W 18 O 49 nanowires and the Cu + doped W 18 O 49 samples were evaluated using H 2 O as reducing agent. The strategy of Cu + doping not only could affect the band edge position and the surface wettability , but also influenced separation of the photogenerated electron-hole pairs. It was found that Cu + doping could introduce oxygen vacancy and change the conduction edge to a more negative position for W 18 O 49 nanowires, which might be beneficial for the activation of CO 2 and promote the following CO 2 reduction. Furthermore, the higher separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs with Cu + doping could contribute to the CO 2 photoreduction enhancement. In addition, the Cu + doped W 18 O 49 nanowires (Cu-W 18 O 49 -0.005) presented a relatively poor hydrophilic property , which might be beneficial for the adsorption of CO 2 molecules and contribute to its superior photocatalytic CO 2 reduction capability.

Automatic-degradable Mo-doped W18O49 based nanotheranostics for CT/FL imaging guided synergistic chemo/photothermal/chemodynamic therapy

Yilong Tian,Wenhui Yi,Qiuya Shao,Minghai Ma,Lei Bai,Rundong Song,Ping Zhang,Jinhai Si,Xun Hou,Jinhai Fan

The development of nanotherapeutics that can efficiently inhibit tumors and rapidly degrade in both cured and healthy tissues remains a research imperative. Herein, we developed tumor microenvironment (TME)-responsive Mo-doped W 18 O 49 nanobundles (MoWO NBs), which are co-assembled hyaluronic acid (HA) and doxorubicin (DOX) to achieve CT/FL imaging-guided multimodal cancer therapy. MoWO NBs exhibit multiple merits: (1) MoWO NBs degrade rapidly in the normal physiological environment but slowly in the weakly acidic TME, which leads to the selective accumulation of MoWO NBs at tumor sites and can prolong the therapeutic effect. (2) The existing Mo 4+ and W 5+ ions in MoWO NBs bestow the NBs with Fenton-like reaction activity to generate cytotoxic hydroxyl radicals (OH) from endogenous H 2 O 2 . Meanwhile, overexpressed glutathione (GSH) can reduce Mo 6+ and W 6+ ions in MoWO NBs to lower valence states, further enhancing the chemodynamic activity of MoWO NBs. (3) Under NIR-II laser irradiation, MoWO with a photothermal conversion efficiency of 45.5% could trigger powerful photothermal therapeutic effects in vitro and in vivo . (4) Owing to the fluorescence emission of DOX and the high Z-elements of molybdenum and tungsten, fluorescence (FL) imaging and computed tomography (CT) imaging have the potential to be used to monitor the biodistribution of Mo-W 18 O 49 @DOX@HA (MoWODH) in vivo . More importantly, the synergistic Chemo/PTT/CDT of MoWODH NCs greatly inhibited tumor growth. This work may broaden the path for smart nanomaterials and TME-responsive therapies.

Engineered solvothermal synthesis of Gd-doped W18O49 nanoprobes for scalable photothermal/photodynamic conversion and dual-modal bio-imaging

Xuejiao Li,Xiaoyu Tan,Xiaofei Gao,Yuxiao Wang,Lianwei Shan,Xin Liu,Limin Dong,Piaoping Yang

Background: Near-infrared-II (NIR-II, 1000-1350 nm) energy conversion systems offers enhanced spatial resolution, deeper tissue penetration, and reduced autofluorescence compared to NIR-I (780-1000 nm). However, treatment precision is limited by complex nanosystems and the lack of real-time imaging. Method: Herein, we develop Gd-doped W 18 O 49 (xGd-W 18 O 49 ) nanoprobes via an engineered solvothermal process (200°C, 24 h), systematically modulating Gd concentrations (2-5 at%) to achieve crystallographic phase stability, uniform morphology, and optimized NIR absorption kinetics. Significant findings: The 3%Gd-W 18 O 49 exhibits prominent photothermal conversion efficiency, photodynamic performance, and in vitro inhibition of MCF-7 cancer cells. Capitalizing on tungsten’s high atomic number (Z=74) and gadolinium’s paramagnetism, this nanoplatform enables synergistic CT/MR dual-modal imaging with contrast enhancement for real-time guidance. This “all-in-one” system demonstrates a scalable strategy for transition metal oxide doping, integrating reactor-synthesized nanomaterials with NIR-induced photothermal/photodynamic therapy for precision theranostics.

W18O49 nanorods decorated with Ag/AgCl nanoparticles as highly-sensitive gas-sensing material and visible-light-driven photocatalyst

Shibin Sun,Xueting Chang,Lihua Dong,Yidong Zhang,Zhenjiang Li,Yanyan Qiu

A novel gas-sensing material and photocatalyst was successfully obtained by decorating Ag/AgCl nanoparticles on the W 18 O 49 nanorods through a clean photochemical route. The as-prepared samples were characterized using combined techniques of X-ray diffractometry, electron microscopy , energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry , and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Gas-sensing measurements indicate that the Ag/AgCl/W 18 O 49 NRs sensors exhibit superior reducing gas-sensing properties to those of bare W 18 O 49 NRs, and they are highly selective and sensitive to NH 3 , acetone, and H 2 S with short response and recovery times. The Ag/AgCl/W 18 O 49 NRs photocatlysts also possess higher photocatalytic performance than bare W 18 O 49 NRs for degradation of methyl orange under simulated sunlight irradiation. Possible mechanisms concerning the enhancement of gas-sensing and photocatalytic activities of the Ag/AgCl/W 18 O 49 NRs composite were proposed.

Tuning Active Sites and Energy Band Structure of Nanowire-Based W18O49 via Co-Doping for Efficient Photocatalytic Nitrogen Fixation

Chuhan Huang,Guanying Liu,Zhehui Zhang,Qian Cheng,Jiajun Wang,Lianming Zhao,Fazle Subhan,Xiaohan Liu,Youhe Wang,Zifeng Yan

Active sites and the energy band structure of the catalyst are crucial in the photocatalytic nitrogen fixation process. In this study, we implemented a doping strategy to incorporate cobalt (Co) atoms into urchin-like W18O49 nanostructures self-assembled from ultrathin nanowires. Both density functional theory calculations and experimental results demonstrate that Co-doping not only changes the energy band structure of W18O49 but also serves as a site for N2 adsorption and activation. Strategic doping of Co into W18O49 significantly reduces the bandgap energy, thereby enhancing the excitation of photogenerated electrons. In addition, the d orbitals of the Co atoms are endowed with the capacity to accept electrons from the σg orbital of N2, which in turn promotes the migration of electrons from the Co 3d orbitals to the π* orbitals of the N2 molecule, leading to activation of the nitrogen triple bond (N≡N). Under the combined effect of energy band modulation and active site introduction, the photocatalytic nitrogen fixation yield of Co–W18O49 with the optimal Co-doping amount reaches 64.3 μmol gcat–1 h–1, which is approximately twice that of W18O49. The enhancement of the photocatalytic nitrogen fixation performance of the material through a Co-doping strategy holds broad application prospects.

Construct electron transport path through NH2-MIL-125 modified Fe-doped W18O49 nanowires to enhance photocatalytic nitrogen fixation performance

Zhenhua Hou,Libo Wang,Gang Liu,Ya Wang,Yuhan Wang,Yangyang Zhang,Xiayu Wu,Nan Li

Ammonia has important application value in agriculture and industry as a raw material for producing nitrogen fertilizers and organic chemicals. The Haber-Bosch method is generally utilized to synthesize ammonia through N 2 and H 2 as raw materials in industry, but the process generates serious energy consumption and pollution. In the paper, a heterojunction catalyst is constructed that adopts NH 2 -MIL-125 and Fe-doped W 18 O 49 (Fe-W 18 O 49 ) for photocatalytic nitrogen fixation. Fe-W 18 O 49 is a nanowire containing oxygen vacancies (OVs). OVs can provide active sites for the adsorption and activation of nitrogen gas. The 3D plate-like morphology of NH 2 -MIL-125 can observably reduce the occurrence of nanowires aggregation. This phenomenon can be attributed to NH 2 -MIL-125 playing a supporting role in the fixation of nanowires. New mesoporous are formed between NH 2 -MIL-125 and Fe-W 18 O 49 in the constructed compound catalyst, which can realize efficient mass transfer between the inside and outside of the catalyst. EPR characterization discovers that Fe-W 18 O 49 /NH 2 -MIL-125 cannot produce •O 2 ˗ and •OH radicals. The type II heterojunction forms between Fe-W 18 O 49 and NH 2 -MIL-125. The heterojunction improves the carrier migration path, and the photocurrent intensity is significantly increased. Under simulated sunlight, Fe-W 18 O 49 /NH 2 -MIL-125–2 emerges the best catalytic performance with an ammonia formation rate of 128.2 µmol g −1 h −1 . The yield of ammonia is boosted in comparing with NH 2 -MIL-125 (13 times) and Fe-W 18 O 49 (1.7 times). After several cycles, Fe-W 18 O 49 /NH 2 -MIL-125 remain maintains good stability during the catalytic process. This paper provides a possibility for constructing low-cost heterojunction catalysts in the territory of photocatalytic nitrogen fixation.

Xiaohui Sun,Wei Wu,Nana Liu,Peng Li,Xueying Zhao,Zhaozhu Qu,Kunming Zhao,Bo Wang,Xianhui Rong,Xuyang Zhang,Guohua Wu,Xiangwei Wang

18 O 49 is a promising electrochromic material with abundant oxygen vacancy and high carrier mobility. However, the electrochromism of W 18 O 49 is not satisfactory, the regulation and synthesis of high-performance W 18 O 49 have become the research hotspot. In this work, it is found that the main chain and side chain structure of solvent molecules can control the assembly and synthesis of W 18 O 49 film, so as to achieve excellent electrochemical and electrochromic properties. The porous reticular W 18 O 49 film synthesized in short-chain molecular solvent shows the excellent transmittance modulation (81.6 % at 633 nm, 77.0 % at 1050 nm), and exhibits the high energy storage of 41.7 mF cm −2 at 0.1 mA cm −2 . Solvent molecular strategy provides a new way for the synthesis and regulation of W 18 O 49 electrochromic films and promotes the further development of high-performance electrochromic materials.

Regulating electron transfer pathway in Au/W18O49 heterostructures by structural design for revealing the photocatalytic mechanism of metal/semiconductor heterostructures

Yuheng Zhang,Yanan Wang,Shuai Yang,Fangyu He,Jun Yan,Zhengwen Yang,Dacheng Zhou,Qi Wang,Jianbei Qiu

The construction of metal/semiconductor heterostructures is a useful technique for improving the electron-hole separation of Semiconductor Photocatalysts. However, there only are a few studies on the mechanism of electron transfer between metal/semiconductor heterostructures. Therefore, through the intelligent design of the material structure, two metal/semiconductor heterostructures (Au/W18O49 heterostructure) were fabricated with identical composition but different structures by different preparation methods: (1) The heterostructure of Au nanoparticles at the tip of sea urchin W18O49 was achieved through photoreduction method; (2) the heterostructure of Au nanoparticles at the root of sea urchin W18O49 was achieved via chemical reduction method, and their electron transfer paths were studied. The results demonstrated that the two materials went through completely different electron transfer paths, and these different electron transfer path also leads to an opposite set of photocatalytic properties. The heterostructure achieved through photoreduction has the best photocatalytic performance. Nevertheless, the photocatalytic performance of the heterostructure prepared by chemical reduction is far inferior to that of the heterostructure prepared by photoreduction, and even inferior to the original W18O49 sample. Therefore, we believe that the structural characteristics of metal/semiconductor heterostructure have a great influence on the electron transfer path. Our work renders useful information that may facilitate the design of heterostructure photocatalyst based on metal/semiconductors.

In situ preparation of highly stable polyaniline/W18O49 hybrid nanocomposite as efficient visible light photocatalyst for aqueous Cr(VI) reduction

Xuesong Zhao,Shaobin Huang,Ying Liu,Qianyu Liu,Yongqing Zhang

In the present study, we prepared novel polyaniline supported W 18 O 49 (PANI/W 18 O 49 ) nanocomposite by in situ oxidative polymerisation method. We herein focused on enhancing the stability and the photocatalytic performance of W 18 O 49 . The prepared PANI/W 18 O 49 was thoroughly characterized by FTIR, TEM, XRD, BET, UV–vis DRS and PL. The PANI support presented a great effect on the light harvesting and photo-charge transfer of the W 18 O 49 , and the optimum percentage of was found to be 10 wt%. As for treating Cr(VI), the effect of important water quality parameters (such as pH, ions, NOM, DO, temperature and SOAs) on photocatalytic performance was investigated under the visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm). SOAs were shown to exert a dramatic accelerating influence on Cr(VI) reduction in the system. The obtained 10%-PANI/W 18 O 49 can completely catalytically reduce 1 mM Cr(VI) in the presence of tartaric acid (1:3) within 50 min. Meanwhile, it can be recycled at ten times without any loss of photocatalytic efficiency, indicating the high stability of the as-prepared photocatalyst. The results of the study demonstrate the potential of the new obtained photocatalyst in efficient utilization of solar energy for treating aqueous Cr(VI).

Photocatalytic CO2 conversion of W18O49/CdSe-Diethylenetriamine with high charge transfer efficiency: Synergistic effect of LSPR effect and S-scheme heterojunction

Yue Huang,Kai Dai,Jinfeng Zhang,Graham Dawson

Non-stoichiometric W 18 O 49 (WO) prepared by solvothermal method has excellent NIR absorption due to the localized surface plasmon resonance effect caused by oxygen vacancies. This has great potential in the field of using sunlight to convert carbon dioxide into organic fuels. In addition, through the amination of CdSe, the one-dimensional/two-dimensional step-scheme (S-scheme) WO/CdSe-diethylenetriamine (WO/CdSe-D) photocatalyst with electron transmission channels driven by visible light to NIR light is constructed by microwave solvothermal method. The LSPR of WO and the synergistic effect of coupling semiconductors to construct S-scheme heterojunctions can improve light utilization and achieve efficient charge carrier transfer efficiency. The optimized photocatalyst of 35%WO/CdSe-D has the best CO 2 reduction performance compared to WO and CdSe-D, and the yield is 25.37 µmol h –1 g –1 . X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to verify the charge transfer path of the S-scheme WO/CdSe-D heterojunction. This work provides a possibility for the application of non-stoichiometric oxides rich in oxygen vacancies in the field of photocatalytic CO 2 reduction.
