Chitin is one of the major components of the fungal cell wall and contributes to the mechanical strength and shape of the fungal cell. Zn(II) 2 Cys 6 transcription factors are unique to the fungal kingdom and have a variety of functions in some fungi. However, the mechanisms by which Zn(II) 2 Cys 6 proteins affect entomopathogenic fungi are largely unknown. Here, we characterized the Zn(II) 2 Cys 6 transcription factor BbTpc1 in the insect pathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana . Disruption of BbTpc1 resulted in a distinct changes in vegetative growth and septation patterns, and a significant decrease in conidia and blastospore yield. The Δ BbTpc1 mutant displayed impaired resistance to chemical stresses and heat shock and attenuated virulence in topical and intrahemocoel injection assays. Importantly, the Δ BbTpc1 mutant had an abnormal cell wall with altered wall thickness and chitin synthesis, which were accompanied by transcriptional repression of the chitin synthetase family genes. In addition, comparative transcriptomics revealed that deletion of BbTpc1 altered fungal asexual reproduction via different genetic pathways. These data revealed that BbTpc1 regulates fungal development, chitin synthesis and biological control potential in B . bassiana .

A novel indium doped bismuth hybrid nanofilm was prepared on a glassy carbon electrode (Bi@In/GCE) and successfully used for the simultaneous measurements of aqueous zinc (Zn(II)), cadmium (Cd(II)) and lead (Pb(II)). The Bi@In hybrid nanofilm was greatly improved in the ability of electron transfer, surface morphology as well as hydrophilicity over single Bi or In film, and exhibited well-defined and separate peaks for Zn(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) by square wave stripping voltammetry. Analytical characteristics of the developed Bi@In/GCE were explored by comparing with single Bi and In film modified electrodes with calibration curves, which exhibited the most preferable electrochemical behaviors toward three metals as predicted. The synergistic effect of Bi and In mainly contributed to the enhanced electrochemical activity of the new electrode. In the concentration range of 0-120 µg L -1 , a good linear relationship was achieved between the peak current and the metal concentration with correlation coefficient higher than 0.995. The detection limits were calculated to be 0.52, 0.15 and 0.67 µg L -1 for Zn(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) (S/N=3), respectively. The analysis of river sample with Bi@In/GCE was performed with satisfactory recoveries higher than 98%, suggesting that the new method is promising as a simple, sensitive and efficient approach to detect the heavy metals in water samples.

( 3 ) (C 18 H 16 N 3 O 2 =2-acetylpyridine- d -tryptophan) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV, 1 H NMR and X-ray diffraction single crystal analysis. The analyses of the structures indicate that all three materials crystallize in the tetragonal crystal system, space group P 4 1 2 1 2. They have similar structures; i.e., the Schiff base coordinates in its deprotonated form and behaves as a hexadentate (4N+2O) coordinated ligand to form a distorted octahedron geometry. On the other hand, as a result of the alternate arrangement of chains through N–H···O intermolecular hydrogen bonds interactions, 2-D layers are formed for the three complexes. Furthermore, the luminescent properties and thermal stabilities of the three complexes were investigated.

A platform for the determination of Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II) has been proposed based on a novel diamond/graphite (D/G) nanoplatelets film electrode using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry method. The microstructure and the composition of the film were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The D/G nanoplatelets structure with two-dimensional diamond nanoplatelet as the stem and highly conducting graphite layers as shells exhibits large specific surface and great electrical conductivity, significantly enhancing the electron transport in the electrochemical reaction. Under the optimum conditions, wide linear ranges and high sensitivity were achieved. In the typical detection process, two linear working ranges were obtained due to the incomplete anodic removal and the limits of detection (LODs) were estimated to be 1.72 μg L −1 , 0.47 μg L −1 , 4.86 μg L −1 and 0.45 μg L −1 for Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) and Cu(II), respectively. The simultaneous detections also verify the superior analytical performance with linear ranges from 10 μg L −1 to 250 μg L −1 and low LODs. Herein, we present a novel diamond/graphite nanoplatelets electrode without any modification/functionalization for the sensitive detection of trace heavy metal ions .

Green CMC/PVA based Schiff base bio-composite material successfully Fabricated • CMC/PVA-LH35 composite achieved adsorption capacity of 532.15 mg/g for Cu(II) • CMC/PVA-LA35 composite achieved adsorption capacity of 516.49 mg/g for Zn(II) • High reusability after 6 cycles with low-cost adsorbents for desalination • DFT computational analysis to elucidate the structural and binding mechanism Metal contamination in water sources is a critical threat to human health and water ecosystems, which reduces the efficiency of water desalination. Therefore, the development of materials for metal removal is essential for water purification. In this study, two novel Schiff bases (LA35 and LH35) were immobilized in a carboxymethyl cellulose/polyvinyl alcohol (CMC/PVA) matrix via robust hydrogen bonding. The CMC/PVA-LA35 and CMC/PVA-LH35 composite adsorbents achieved a maximal adsorption of 474.38 mg/g and 532.15 mg/g for Cu(II) and 516.49 mg/g and 468.04 mg/g for Zn(II), respectively, at optimum conditions, pH 5, 318 K, and 300 mg/L. The data fit the Langmuir isotherm model, suggesting that adsorption occurred on a homogeneous mono-layer surface with uniform binding sites. Additionally, a thermodynamic analysis confirmed the reaction was both spontaneous and endothermic. After six cycles of adsorption/desorption, the CMC/PVA-LA35 and CMC/PVA-LH35 maintained outstanding reusability with efficiencies of 76.72% and 81.69% for Cu(II) and 71.33% and 67.32% for Zn(II), respectively. DFT calculations revealed effective metal-ligand interactions via charge transfer and reduced bandgap. These findings were consistent with the large experimental adsorption capacities and confirm the importance of chemisorption for Cu(II) and Zn(II) removal. These findings reveal that metal chelation strength and complexation control the adsorption process. The results of the cost-effectiveness analysis showed that the total cost of reusability was extremely low. This discovery unveils its potential use in water desalination, offering new bio-composites to decrease metal contamination and protect aquatic life. To overcome drug resistance, the combination of two or more therapeutic strategies with different mechanisms has received much attention in recent years. In this study, a common approach has been used to process curcumin and Zn2+ into colloidal dispersions known as “nanoparticles”, which are cheap and easy to prepare with high reproducibility. This novel vehicle has good biocompatibility and high cellular uptake for simultaneously delivering the curcumin drug and siRNA into tumor cells. Complexation of Zn2+ with curcumin enhances the aqueous solubility of the hydrophobic drug curcumin and further improves the cellular uptake and bioavailability. The acid-labile coordination Zn(II)–O bond in Zn(II)–curcumin drug nanoparticles (Zn(II)–Cur NPs) can respond to tumor intracellular acidic pH environments to release curcumin, and promoting acid-triggered intracellular drug release. The positively charged Zn(II)–Cur NPs can efficiently deliver siRNA into human bladder cancer cells, protect siRNA against enzymatic degradation, and facilitate the escape of loaded siRNA from the endosome into the cytoplasm, which successfully downregulates the targeted EIF5A2 oncogene and consequently inhibits cancer cell growth in vitro and in vivo. Proliferation and migration of cancer cells are inhibited by silencing the expression of EIF5A2 and increasing the ratio of pro-apoptotic BAX to anti-apoptotic BCL-2. In vitro and in vivo experiments have demonstrated that bifunctional Zn(II)–Cur NPs/siEIF5A2 can combine chemotherapy with gene therapy to afford higher therapeutic efficacy than the individual therapeutic protocols.

A new Zn(II) metal–organic framework (MOF) with the formula [Zn(BBIP)(2,6-NDC)]n (JXUST-44, BBIP = 3,5-bis(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)pyridine and 2,6-H2NDC = 2,6-naphthalic acid) was synthesized under solvothermal conditions. The adjacent Zn(II) ions are connected by BBIP ligands to form one-dimensional (1D) chains, which are further linked by carboxylate groups of 2,6-NDC2− ligands to obtain a two-dimensional layer structure, resulting in a 2D → 3D polycatenated MOF. JXUST-44 can be simplified as a 4-connected sql topology and shows good chemical stability in a wide pH range from 2 to 12 at room temperature. The fluorescence experiments indicate that JXUST-44 presents sensitive and selective detection of salicylaldehyde (SA), acetylacetone (acac) and H2PO4− with the detection limits of 0.074, 10.311 and 0.011 ppm, respectively. It is worth noting that JXUST-44 shows turn-on fluorescence toward acac and H2PO4−, as well as good recyclability and stability for acac, SA and H2PO4−. Therefore, JXUST-44 can be considered as a good fluorescent sensor for acac, SA and H2PO4−. The sensing mechanism has also been studied in detail.

In this study, MXene was functionalized with poly (tannic acid) to prepare MXene@PTA nanosheets . Subsequently, zinc ions (Zn(II)) was introduced into the MXene@PTA to obtain MXene@PTA-Zn(II) hybrids. The successful preparation of the hybrids was confirmed by FTIR, XPS , and SPM analysis. The composite coatings containing MXene@PTA-Zn(II) were then prepared and subjected to tribology and electrochemical tests. The results of the tribology test showed that 4-PMZ/WEP coating (with 0.4 wt% MXene@PTA-Zn(II)) has a uniform and shallow wear trace after 30 min of friction, and its wear rate decreased by 85.29 % in comparison to the blank WEP coating. The electrochemical tests demonstrated 4-PMZ/WEP coating has excellent corrosion resistance , which maintains a high |Z 0.01 Hz |(9.0 × 10 8 Ω·cm 2 ) after 42 days of immersion in the 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. These findings indicate that MXene@PTA-Zn(II) can effectively enhance the anti-corrosion properties and tribological properties of WEP coatings. As a result, this work provides new ideas for applications of MXene in the domain of metal protection.

Organometallic nanozymes, organometallics of which mimic the cofactor of natural enzymes, have the advantages of tunable catalytic activity, high stability, and material variety. By assembling organometallics (catalytic site) on inorganic nanoparticles (support), organometallic nanozymes have been rationally designed, but modulating their assembly and activity remains a tough challenge. Here, we construct a photo-modulated organometallic nanozyme by anchoring azobenzene-modified triethylenetetramine (Azo-N4) to the surface of β-cyclodextrin-capped gold nanoparticles (AuNP@CDs) through host–guest interaction, followed by Zn(II) coordination to form organometallics. The catalytic site derives from the outer organometallic layer. The nanozyme catalyzes the hydrolysis of 4-nitrophenyl acetate to 4-nitrophenol and the catalytic signal is used to detect Zn(II). Due to the photoisomerization of azobenzene, the supramolecular assembly of host–guest interaction is modulated by light. The disassembly leads to cascade catalysis of AuNP@CDs-Azo-N4-Zn and the recovery of AuNP@CDs. Our study provides a new idea and reference for the rational design and activity modulation of organometallic nanozymes.

Tetracycline (TC) is one of the most widely used antibiotics in aquaculture, and its good water solubility makes it a major contaminant in seawater. Therefore, it is very necessary and challenging to develop an efficient detection method. In this work, two novel metal–organic frameworks [Zn (bpydb)(bimmb) 0.5 ] n ( 1 ), {[Zn 2 (bpydb) 2 (bimb)]·[Zn (bpydb)(bimb)]·H 2 O} n ( 2 ), (bimb = 1,4-bis (lmidazol) butane, H 2 bypdb = 4,4′-(4,4’-Bipyridine-2,6-diyl)dibenzoic acid, bimmb = 1,4-bis (imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene) were successfully synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Zn-MOF 1 – 2 were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). As expected, 1 – 2 have excellent fluorescence properties, thermal stability and good structural stability in water. TC in water can be detected by fluorescence quenching with high selectivity. At the same time, the fluorescence quenching efficiency remains unchanged in the presence of other interfering antibiotics and in aqueous solutions of different pH values (pH = 3–10). The detection ability of 1 in real seawater has not changed substantially, showing considerable practical application prospects. Interestingly, 1 – 2 also efficiently detected traces of acetone in solution with detection limits of 0.07 μM (4.38 ppb) and 0.18 μM (10.85 ppb), respectively. In addition, the mechanism of fluorescence quenching is further discussed.

Rationally designed and synthesized Schiff base sensor CMTAH containing coumarin fluorophores by the coupling of coumarin aldehyde and thiophene-2-carbohydrazide and acts as differentially selective chemosensor via colorimetric/ratiometric responses to Cu(II)/Zn(II) ions with fluorescence switchable strategy in aqueous media . Variation in absorption and emission spectra of CMTAH with different metal cations in aqueous media reveal high-affinity binding to Cu(II)/Zn(II) ions over other coexisting cations. Moreover, the spectrometric titrations and Job's plot curves substantiated the stoichiometric ratio of 1:1 for Cu(II)/Zn(II) complexes formation with low detection limits of 141 nM and 72 nM, respectively. Particularly, the responding mechanism of CMTAH toward Cu(II)/Zn(II) ions was investigated by density functional theory calculations. Notably, the molecular logic gates were established with the combination of CMTAH for the intelligentialized recognition of Cu(II)/Zn(II) ions. Additionally, the compatibility and permeability of CMTAH were attributed to Schiff base group, which exhibited remarkable responding and bioimaging in living cells and zebrafish. Notably, CMTAH could be used to image in Drosophila larvae with a clearly visible profile of internal organs and effectively capture Cu(II) and Zn(II) ions in living Drosophila larvae, which lay the foundation of sensors in the field of Drosophila biological imaging research.
