Damage mechanism analysis to the carbon fiber and fiber-ceramic interface tailoring of Cf/ZrC-SiC using PyC coating

Ping Hu,Yuan Cheng,Maosong Xie,Yu Yang,Chang Liu,Qiang Qu,Xinghong Zhang,Shanyi Du

The damage mechanism of carbon fiber and fiber-ceramic interface of C f /ZrC-SiC were investigated and revealed. The chemical reactions of C with ZrO 2 and SiO 2 impurities during the sintering resulted in the surface and grain etching of fiber. The ZrC-SiC ceramics diffused into interface to form a strong bonding under high temperature and press, leading to a failure of stress release and guiding the crack propagation direct across fiber. Both consequently impeded the fiber pull-out and bridging. By obvious contrast, the chemical etching of fiber was effectively inhibited utilizing PyC coating as transition layer, and the strong bonding of fiber with ceramic was relieved at the same time replaced by a relatively weak bonding. As a result, the fiber pull-out and fiber bridging were boosted with a longer length more than 50 µm, over 2 times of uncoated composite, accompanied with obvious crack branching and deflection, together resulting in a graceful mechanical feedback with 2.5 times of work of fracture and improved fracture toughness . This work not only revealed the microstructure forms and inherent mechanism on structure damage of carbon fiber, but also offered an effective method of protecting fiber and tailoring the interface bonding, thereby guiding the design of C f /ZrC-SiC with graceful mechanical performance.

Remarkable synergistic effects of Mg2NiH4 and transition metal carbides (TiC, ZrC, WC) on enhancing the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2

Linglong Yao,Xuanyu Lyu,Jiguang Zhang,Yana Liu,Yunfeng Zhu,Huaijun Lin,Yao Zhang,Liquan Li

Nanostructuring and catalyzing are effective methods for improving the hydrogen storage properties of MgH 2 . In this work, transition-metal-carbides (TiC, ZrC and WC) are introduced into Mg–Ni alloy to enhance its hydrogen storage performance. 5 wt% transition-metal-carbide containing Mg 95 Ni 5 (atomic ratio) nanocomposites are prepared by mechanical milling pretreatment followed by hydriding combustion synthesis and mechanical milling process, and the synergetic enhancement effects of Mg 2 NiH 4 and transition-metal-carbides are investigated systematically. Due to the inductive effect of Mg 2 NiH 4 and charge transfer effect between Mg/MgH 2 and transition-metal-carbides, Mg 95 Ni 5 -5 wt.% transition-metal-carbide samples all exhibit excellent hydrogen storage kinetic at moderate temperature and start to release hydrogen around 216 °C. Among them, 2.5 wt% H 2 (220 °C) and 4.7 wt% H 2 (250 °C) can be released from the Mg 95 Ni 5 -5 wt.% TiC sample within 1800 s. The unique mosaic structure endows the Mg 95 Ni 5 -5 wt.% TiC with excellent structural stability, thus can reach 95% of saturated hydrogen capacity within 120 s even after 10 cycles of de-/hydrogenation at 275 °C. And the probable synergistic enhancement mechanism for hydrogenation and dehydrogenation is proposed.

Jiaqi Liu,Cuiyan Li,Haibo Ouyang,Tianzhan Shen,Shuai Zhang,Xinnuo Wang,Xinge Niu

Functional ceramic foams are promising candidate materials that integrate electromagnetic absorption, load-bearing, thermal insulation, and thermal stability, to meet the challenges of extreme environments in modern aerospace technology. In this study, SiC fiber has been introduced in the ZrC-TiC ceramic foam to enhance the mechanical properties and electromagnetic wave absorption performance. The SiC f /ZrC-TiC ceramic foam has been fabricated by a simple precursor self-foaming method with a porosity of 76.9% and a density of 0.31 g/cm 3 . The interconnection of SiC fibers endows SiC f /ZrC-TiC ceramic foam with excellent load-bearing capacity with a compressive strength of 41.3 MPa. Meanwhile, the introduction of SiC fiber boost its electromagnetic wave absorption performance with a RL min  = −63.5 dB and EAB max  = 6.04 GHz. The high porosity endows it with a low thermal conductivity advantage of 0.231 W·m −1 ·K −1 . Particularly, SiC f /ZrC-TiC ceramic foam exhibit outstanding high-temperature stability. After 10 thermal cycles at 1600 °C, the compressive strength remained at 30.7 MPa, and the EAB max was 5.28 GHz (RL min  = −57.2 dB). The multifunctional synergistic advantages of SiC f /ZrC-TiC ceramic foams provide a feasible strategy for the design of multifunctional protective materials in aerospace.

Lightweight and high temperature thermal insulated ZrC/C porous material with high strength and temperature resistance up to 2000 °C

Dingli Sun,Xukun Yang,Jing Chang,Yifan Li,Yixin Zhang,Anran Guo,Feng Hou,Jiachen Liu,Liwen Yan

The extreme aerothermal environments resulting from hypersonic flight create significant challenges for thermal protection materials and structures. As hypersonic vehicles continue to evolve, the development of novel materials with excellent thermal resistance, low thermal conductivity, and outstanding mechanical performance has become increasingly essential. To address this issue, a porous ZrC/C material with a hierarchical structure was fabricated via a facile precursor conversion method. The unique hierarchical structure endowed the material with an ultra-low thermal conductivity of 0.08-0.31 W/(m·K) at room temperature and merely 0.44-0.89 W/(m·K) at 1000 °C, as well as a relatively high compressive strength of 0.86-7.25 MPa. More importantly, even after heat treatment at 2000 °C, the material could still retain its porous three-dimensional framework structure, exhibiting outstanding high-temperature thermal stability. Meanwhile, in comparison with other porous carbon materials, the oxidation resistance of porous ZrC/C material was enhanced. Thus, the porous ZrC/C represented a promising candidate for ultra-high temperature thermal insulation application.

Ablation behavior and mechanism of (PyC-Csf)/ZrB2-SiC-ZrC ceramics sintered by reactive spark plasma sintering at low temperature

Chuangfang Tao,Huanyi Liao,Bin Chen,Weiguo Mao,Jie Wang,Cuiying Dai,Zheqiong Fan,Zhe Zhou,Jinglv Zuo

The (PyC-C sf )/ZrB 2 -SiC-ZrC ceramics are fabricated by reactive spark plasma sintering (RSPS) at 1200 °C. The sample has a low density and intact pyrolytic carbon modified carbon fiber (PyC-C sf ). After three cycles of ablation (heat flux = 2.38 MW/m 2 , t = 120 s), samples demonstrate excellent resistance to oxidative ablation. The mass recession rate and linear recession rate for the sample are 3.41 g/m 2 ∙s and 0.68 µm/s, respectively. Excessive content of carbon destroys the oxide layer by forming large amounts of CO 2 during the ablation process. The inner layer of intact PyC-C sf aggregates around the borosilicate which are denser in the oxide layer. Finally, a porous ZrO 2 -SiO 2 layer and a dense ZrO 2 -SiO 2 -C sf layer are formed on the surface of the sample which resists ablation.

Realization of (ZrC/SiC)n multilayer alternating coatings prepared by one-step chemical vapor deposition: Mechanical and anti-ablation enhancement

Bo Li,Hejun Li,Yigao Chen

Combining ZrC and SiC monolayers to form alternating multilayers on C/C composites allows to achieve advanced properties. Herein, a one-step CVD method was developed to fabricate the (ZrC/SiC) n multilayer alternating coatings with high fabrication efficiency, high bonding strength and precise control of sublayer thickness and number. The deposition behavior of coating was demonstrated to be the hetero-epitaxial growth at the interface and the preferential growth of SiC and ZrC columnar grains. It brought a pure and tight interface between SiC and ZrC, with high bonding strength (ten times higher than common CVD method). The indentation response, scratch behavior and pullout test of the coating were studied to obtain the strengthen mechanism of one-step deposition. The increase of interfacial bonding strength gave the coating the ability to resist the delamination of sublayers, resulting in the improved mechanical properties and further superior ablation resistance.

Synthesis and formation mechanism of ZrC–SiC–TiC ceramic powders with high-sinterability via sol-gel process and carbothermal reduction

Lei Zheng,Zhanjun Liu,Hongchao Zhao,Quangui Guo,Mingyu Zhang,Qizhong Huang

In this work, high-sinterability ZrC–SiC–TiC ceramic powders were synthesised through a sol-gel approach coupled with subsequent carbothermal reactions. Specifically, MgCl 2 was utilised as an additive to enhance the sintering activity of the powders. Experimental results revealed that the introduction of Mg and variation in Zr/Ti molar ratios significantly influenced the phase and morphological evolution of the precursor. In the form of a Mg–Si–O liquid phase, Mg promoted carbothermal reduction and solid-solution reactions. It ultimately remained as amorphous Mg–Si–O oxide in the final ZrC–SiC–TiC ceramic powders, effectively improving the sintering activity of ceramic powders. Consequently, dense Mg-modified ZrC–SiC–TiC ceramics with high relative density up to 99.2 % were successfully fabricated by spark plasma sintering at 1700 °C and 30 MPa.

A SiCnw/ZrC porous ceramic fabricated via a direct foaming method with enhanced load-bearing, thermal insulation, and electromagnetic wave absorption properties

Cuiyan Li,Li Wang,Haibo Ouyang,Tianzhan Shen,Leer Bao,Qiaoqiao Wang,Sirui Wu,Mengyao He,Jiaqi Liu,Qianqian Chen

To address the increasing demands for multifunctionality in thermal insulation, electromagnetic wave absorption, and load-bearing capabilities, a silicon carbide nanowire (SiC nw )/zirconium carbide (ZrC) porous ceramic was synthesized by a liquid-phase precursor foaming method with a density of 0.54 g/cm 3 and a porosity of 88.3%. The SiC nw was in-situ grown in the sintering process, which is interwoven within the ZrC porous ceramic, forming a three-dimensional network structure. The SiC nw /ZrC porous ceramic exhibits outstanding electromagnetic wave absorption (the minimum reflection loss of −66.25 dB, the maximum effective absorption bandwidth of 5.4 GHz), low thermal conductivity (0.218 W·m −1 ·K −1 ), and high compression strength (45.9 MPa). In-situ grown SiC nanowires not only enhance the polarization loss and interface loss of porous ceramics, but also act as reinforcing phases to bear and transfer loads, achieving a synergistic improvement in load-bearing and wave-absorbing performance. In addition, the in-situ growth of SiC nw effectively improves the porosity and pore size distribution of porous ceramics, leading to an enhancement in thermal insulation performance. This research provides a new idea for the design of multifunctional integrated materials with the functions of load-bearing, thermal insulation and electromagnetic wave absorption in extreme aerospace environments.

Nano-(Ta, Zr)C Precipitates at Multigrain Conjunctions in TaC Ceramic with 10 mol% ZrC and 5 mol% Cu as Sintering Aid

Lianbing Zhong,Guihong Geng,Yujin Wang,Feng Ye,Limeng Liu

A fully dense TaC ceramic was prepared by hot pressing using 10 mol% ZrC plus 5 mol% Cu as a sintering aid. Formation of (Ta, Zr)C solid solution (ss) by reaction between TaC and ZrC facilitated densification. Addition of Cu refined the microstructure and consequently improved flexural strength of the TaC ceramics. TEM investigation found ubiquitous precipitation of nanocrystallites at multigrain conjunctions. The nanocrystallites were (Ta, Zr)C solid solution with uniform dispersion in an oxygen-rich glassy matrix. Although formation of nanoprecipitates may not much affect the mechanical properties of the TaC ceramic, the structure suggested a new type of nanoceramic worth further research.

On the ductilization and the resistance to annealing-induced embrittlement of high-strength W–Re and nano-particle doped W-Re-ZrC alloys

Shu Miao,Yunqiang Zhao,Zhuoming Xie,Longfei Zeng,Yan Lin

Ductilization and suppression of annealing-induced embrittlement have become the critical premises for various structural applications of high-strength tungsten materials but have yielded few practical advances. Here, we successfully fabricated W–Re and nano-particle doped W-Re-ZrC alloys with a combination of desirable ductility and a high tensile strength above 1.3 GPa by powder metallurgy plus hot swaging. Specifically, the W–Re and W-Re-ZrC alloys exhibit total elongations of 31.6% and 16.1%, respectively, at room temperature. Upon high-temperature annealing at 1600 °C, the W-Re-ZrC alloy still retains a high total elongation of 12.9% and a high tensile strength of over 1.3 GPa, unlike the W–Re alloy, which exhibits substantial losses of ductility and strength. Microstructure analysis reveals that a large amount of low-angle grain boundaries and high-density mobile dislocations are responsible for ductilization. Meanwhile, ZrC nano-particles stabilize low-angle grain boundaries and dislocation structures at elevated temperatures, suppressing annealing-induced embrittlement in the W-Re-ZrC alloy. The present work provides a promising methodology for manufacturing bulk high-strength tungsten materials with favorable room-temperature ductility and high resistance to catastrophic failure during long-term service.

Near-infrared light radiation-enhanced green extraction of cepharanthine through photothermal conversion using nanofluid system combined with zirconium carbide and deep eutectic solvent (ZrC@DES)

Hongyao Li,Xinyu Gao,Zidan Luo,Subhan Mahmood,Enming Liu,Shun Yao

A ZrC@DES nanofluid system based on different deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and Zirconium carbide (ZrC) nanoparticles was synthesized for green extraction of cepharanthine (CEP) for the first time. The basic properties of DESs were explored and the prepared nanofluid system was characterized with a series of ways. As the key performance, the photothermal conversion performance of the latter was investigated in details as well as its stability. On the basis of above results, a novel extraction method for CEP under near-infrared light radiation was established, and the effects of various factors on its extraction yield were systematically studied under optimized conditions. The final yield of CEP reached 7.2978 mg/g, which was approximately four times higher than that of traditional heating method with ethanol. The Fick’s model could be well applied to fit the kinetic data; CEP was recovered and the components of nanofluid system were reused through the developed post-treatment procedures. Finally, the friendliness and low risk were proved by Zebrafish experiment. The whole study aimed to provide new reference for the extraction of natural bioactive products through energy conversion.
