Flexible quasi-solid-state zinc ion batteries enabled by highly conductive carrageenan bio-polymer electrolyte

Yuan Huang,Jiuwei Liu,Jiyan Zhang,Shunyu Jin,Yixiang Jiang,Shengdong Zhang,Zigang Li,Chunyi Zhi,Guoqing Du,Hang Zhou

Flexible Zn–MnO2 batteries as wearable electronic power source have attracted much attention in recent years due to their low cost and high safety. To promote the practical application of flexible Zn–MnO2 batteries, it is imperative to develop flexible, mechanically robust and high performance solid state electrolyte. Herein, we construct a rechargeable quasi-solid-state zinc ion battery using kappa-carrageenan bio-polymer electrolyte. The kappa-carrageenan electrolyte is eco-friendly, low cost, and highly conductive (3.32 × 10−2 S cm−1 at room temperature). The mechanical robustness of kappa-carrageenan electrolyte is further reinforced by using a rice paper as scaffold. Benefiting from high ionic conductivity of the bio-polymer electrolyte, our zinc ion battery delivers a significant high energy density and power density (400 W h kg−1 and 7.9 kW kg−1, respectively), high specific capacity (291.5 mA h g−1 at 0.15 A g−1), fast charging and discharging capability (120.0 mA h g−1 at 6.0 A g−1). The zinc ion battery with bio-polymer electrolyte also shows excellent cycling stability and high bending durability. This work brings new research opportunities in developing low-cost flexible solid-state zinc ion batteries using green natural polymer.

Engineering quercetin assemblies as multifunctional photodynamic nanofillers in gelatin/κ-carrageenan films for postharvest preservation

Ting Du,Yikai Song,Shuo Shi

Conventional food packaging functions as a passive barrier, failing to dynamically counter microbial contamination that accounts for 30–40% of postharvest losses. Herein, inspired by polyphenol coordination chemistry, a light-driven, metal-phenolic coordination system was engineered with programmable reactive oxygen species (ROS) release for active polysaccharide films. FQM nanoparticles (FQM NPs) were prepared via a one-pot supramolecular assembly of ferrous ions, plant-derived quercetin, and aromatic aldehyde, and subsequently incorporated homogeneously into a gelatin/κ-carrageenan (GCA) matrix. The resulting 0.5 wt% FQM-GCA film exhibits multifunctionality: mechanical reinforcement, enhanced gas barrier, and photodynamic antimicrobial activity via breaking the ROS balance by light irradiation. This system achieved complete inactivation (100%) of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli and > 99.4% suppression of fungal pathogens ( Penicillium expansum and Botrytis cinerea ). Comprehensive validation from nanostructure characterization to postharvest preservation of diverse agricultural products demonstrates a significant shelf-life extension. This work establishes a green, precise, and multifunctional platform for next-generation active packaging, aligning with circular economy principles and providing a transformative solution for sustainable food preservation. FQM-GCA nanocomposite films re-synthesized via green chemistry by integrating quercetin-based assemblies with the GCA matrix, exhibiting high photo-active antimicrobial efficacy and enhanced multifunctional properties for sustainable food packaging. Sulfate ester motifs of carrageenan govern the assembly and functional properties of tea protein carriers

Xinran Liu,Jinhua Song,Zongwei Hao,Yang Pu,Lihua Chu,Zhongwen Xie,Daxiang Li,Zhenyu Yu,Yiqun Du

Sulfate ester motifs of carrageenan modulate assembly properties of tea protein. • Carrageenan sulfate ester motif regulates the bioaccessibility of curcumin. • Sulfate ester motif of carrageenan influenced the functional properties of carrier. Incorporation of carrageenan (Car) offers an effective approach to modulate the assembly and functionality of protein-based nanocomplexes; however, the role of Car sulfate ester motifs has not been fully clarified. Here, κ-Car, ι-Car, and λ-Car with distinct sulfate content and distributions were used to construct Car/TP-Cur nanocomplexes. The sulfate ester motifs regulated intermolecular interactions and protein conformation, leading to distinct assembly structures. In κ-Car/TP-Cur and ι-Car/TP-Cur nanocomplexes, the interaction between TP and Cur was dominated by hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction, whereas λ-Car/TP-Cur complex was mainly governed by hydrophobic interactions. Notably, ι-Car produced the most compact and stable structure, achieving curcumin encapsulation efficiency of 83.33% and bioaccessibility of 34.59%. Moreover, sulfate ester motifs significantly affected antioxidant activity and emulsion properties. These findings clarify how Car sulfate motifs regulate the assembly behavior and functional properties of protein-polysaccharide complexes and provide guidance for designing efficient natural delivery carriers. Study on the preparation, characterization, and antibacterial properties of keggin POMs functionalized carrageenan composite films

Wang Anxing,Wang Mengqi,Zhang Yu,Zhang Qing,Yuan Guojun

A composite antimicrobial film (Carrageenan/Polyoxometalate, Carr/POM) was prepared by doping Keggin-type polyoxometalate Na 3 PW 12 O 40 into carrageenan using the casting method. The mechanical properties, thermal stability, surface morphology, structure, antimicrobial activity and biodegradability of the films were systematically investigated. The results showed that the incorporation of Na 3 PW 12 O 40 enhanced the water resistance of the carrageenan film and significantly impacted the surface morphology and crystal structure of the film. In antibacterial tests, the Carr/POM film exhibited strong bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus ( S.aureus ), with the Carr/POM-4 film demonstrating the strongest inhibitory effect, corresponding to an inhibition zone diameter of 10.58 mm.In addition, the Carr/POM films showed excellent biodegradability, with complete decomposition occurring in soil within approximately one week. These findings suggest that the prepared films possess excellent antimicrobial properties against foodborne pathogenic microorganisms, making them promising candidates for further application in the field of food packaging.

Silver Nanoparticle Enhanced Antibacterial, Ultra-Broad Responsive κ-Carrageenan Composite Hydrogels for Flexible Strain Sensors

Liqin Cao,Lu Liu,Xin Hu

A multi-component hydrogel was prepared by the sol–gel process of anionic κ-carrageenan to construct a physical cross-linking network and chemical cross-linking of acrylamide (AM), in which polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) served as a component of the semi-interpenetrating network, and nano-silver powders were used as conductive particles and antibacterial agents of the hydrogel. XRD confirmed that the hydrogel contained silver nanoparticles, and the homogeneous dispersion of silver nanoparticles made the hydrogel have high conductivity (35.84 S/m) and also improved its sensitivity in strain response. The strain sensitivity gauge factor (GF) of the hydrogel could reach 6.79 in a relatively large strain range (100%–500%), and it also had a high response sensitivity in the weak strain range such as 0.1% to 5% (GF = 1.43). The presence of PVP-Ag improved the mechanical properties of the gel, and its tensile strength, elongation at break, and toughness were 0.345 MPa, 1310%, and 4519.5 kJ/m 3 , respectively. With the increase in carrageenan content, the thermal reversibility of the hydrogel was dominant, and the composite hydrogel behaved with a certain self-healing ability. Thus, this work could provide a flexible electronic material with biocompatibility, antibacterial properties, high sensitivity, and a wide strain range. Graphical The interaction mechanisms of each component of the prepared conductive hydrogel CG/PAM/PVP-Ag and its typical electrical responses for monitoring human breathing.

Impact of Ultra-High Pressure Assisted Alkaline Extraction on Properties and Structural Characteristics of Carrageenan

Mingjing Zheng,Liyuan Wang,Tao Hong,Zhipeng Li,Yanbing Zhu,Zedong Jiang,Hui Ni,Yuanfan Yang,Yujia Ou

This study investigated the effects of ultra-high pressure (UHP)-assisted alkaline extraction on the physicochemical and structural properties of carrageenan. UHP treatment between 100 and 300 MPa significantly enhanced performance, with yield increasing by 12.7% at 100 MPa and gel strength reaching 911.57 g/cm 2 at 300 MPa, accompanied with a 16.15% improvement when compared with the control. Compositional analysis showed a 13.26% reduction in sulfate groups and a 19.63% increase in 3,6-anhydrogalactose at 300 MPa, together with higher uronic acid (increased by 30.11%) and total sugar (increased by 13.90%) contents. These changes resulted in functional improvements, e.g., the elevated water-holding capacity. LF-NMR analysis indicated the reduced water mobility and a higher proportion of bound water for carrageenan treated at 300 MPa. Antioxidant assays further confirmed that carrageenan treated at 300 MPa exhibited stronger radical scavenging activity, with DPPH and •OH clearance rates increased by 20.99% and 8.87% ( p < 0.05), respectively, whereas treatment at 500 MPa attenuated these effects. Overall, the results demonstrated that moderate UHP treatment, particularly at 300 MPa, effectively improved the structural and functional properties of carrageenan, supporting its potential application as a functional hydrocolloid.

Effect of myosin-kappa carrageenan Pickering emulsions on the quality of bighead carp surimi gels

Zhongyang Ren,Xianglan Huang,Yongqiang Zhao,Linfan Shi,Shen Yang,Ritian Jin,Rong Lin,Shuji Liu,Zhiyu Liu,Yucang Zhang,Wuyin Weng

Emulsions could be utilized to improve surimi gels. How myosin-kappa carrageenan (κC) Pickering emulsions to affect the quality of bighead carp surimi is still unclear. The particle distribution of myosin-κC Pickering emulsion was characterized as uniform and stable through particle size potential and microstructure observations. The impact of oil substitution rate on the gel quality of bighead carp ( Aristichthys nobilis ) surimi was investigated by incorporating substitution oil into the surimi. The results indicated that the gel strength and hardness of bighead carp surimi increased significantly with higher oil substitution rates. When the myosin-κC Pickering emulsion completely replaced the oil, the gel hardness of surimi reached its highest level, and the L* value and whiteness significantly increased ( P < 0.05). Additionally, the water-holding capacity (WHC) of the surimi gel improved with increasing oil substitution rates. Myosin-κC Pickering emulsions were evenly distributed within the gel matrix as small oil droplets, filling the pores of the surimi and effectively enhancing the gel network structure. Sensory evaluation and gas phase ion migration spectrometry demonstrated that the myosin-κC Pickering emulsion improved sensory properties and reduced undesirable flavors when it completely replaced the oil. These results suggest that myosin-κC Pickering emulsion is beneficial for enhancing the properties and flavor of surimi gels.

Adsorption and depression mechanism of carrageenan on chalcopyrite and pyrite for the efficiency flotation separation

Huifang Yang,Xiaoyu Cao,Jihui Luo,Jianxian Zeng,Xiaoping Huang,Jianrong Xue,Sheng Liu

In this study, an eco-friendly compound, carrageenan, was employed as a depressant for the selective separation of chalcopyrite and pyrite. The depressant performance and mechanism were comprehensively investigated. The results of the flotation experiments demonstrated that carrageenan exhibited selective depression towards pyrite as opposed to chalcopyrite, achieving flotation recoveries of 88.57 % for chalcopyrite and 9.57 % for pyrite with the combination of 2 × 10 -5 mol/L SIBX and 20 mg/L carrageenan. The results of AFM and contact angle measurements revealed that carrageenan exhibited selective adsorption on pyrite surface, resulting in an enhancement in surface hydrophilicity. In contrast, the adsorption of carrageenan on chalcopyrite surface was found to be negligible. Zeta potential and XPS analyses further confirmed the chemisorption of carrageenan on the pyrite surface, indicating the reaction involving sulfuric acid and hydroxyl groups on carrageenan and Fe sites on pyrite. Therefore, carrageenan holds potential as a promising depressant for the selective separation of chalcopyrite from pyrite.

Mussel-inspired highly adhesive carrageenan-based coatings with self-activating enhanced activity for meat preservation

Yumeng Li,Yongsheng Ni,Wei He,Haoran Li,Wendi Zhang,Lijun Tan,Jinsong Zhao,Baocai Xu

In order to solve the problem of poor adhesion of polysaccharide coatings in meat storage and inconvenient secondary spraying, which leads to poor preservation effect, this study was inspired by the property of mussels to adhere firmly to surfaces and design a bioactive composite coating. Here, curcumin-loaded zein nanoparticles (CZ NPs) were successfully prepared and incorporated into carrageenan-based biocomposite coatings for chilled meat preservation. The prepared curcumin-zein-riboflavin-carrageenan (CZRC) coating featured smooth spherical morphology and the solubility of hydrophobic substances, the adhesion and stability of the composite coating were respectively improved to 3.8 and 6 times compared to CZ NPs. The CZRC coating also shows desirable antioxidant activity (89.78 ± 4.8 % on DPPH and 91.40 ± 2.1 % on ABTS +) and the treatment based on CZRC coating under light irradiation reduced Pseudomonas fragi (by 2.02 log CFU/mL) and Brochothrix thermosphacta (by 4.35 log CFU/mL), which prolonged the shelf life of lamb and pork to 1.8 and 2.3 times at 4 °C storage condition. This work provides a viable strategy for the development of highly adhesive coatings with self-activation enhanced activity to achieve long-lasting preservation.

Calcium-induced-gel properties for ι-carrageenan in the presence of different charged amino acids

Chengrong Wen,Nan Wang,Yingying Dong,Jie Tian,Shuang Song,Hang Qi

ι-Carrageenan (IC) is a water-soluble polysaccharide containing high sulfate groups, whose gel properties are influenced by charged materials. The rheological and thermal properties, water mobility, morphology, and structure of the binary blends of calcium-ι-carrageenan (CCa) with different charged amino acids including arginine (Arg, positive), glutamine (Gln, neutrality), and glutamic acid (Glu, negative) were evaluated. Different charged amino acids affected the gel properties of CCa with different mechanisms. There were the highest elastic (G′) and viscous (G″) moduli of CCa gels at 0.5 mg/mL Arg and 1 mg/mL Gln, while both G′ and G″ were decreased by adding Glu. The water mobility of CCa gel was weakened by Arg and Glu, while no significant influence was observed for Gln. The thermal properties of CCa were improved by amino acids. Gln fills the gaps in the network structure through hydrogen bond and weak electrostatic interaction to stabilize the gel structure, while Arg and Glu affect the formation of gel through hydrogen bonds and strong electrostatic interaction. The information obtained from this research will provide insights into the further application of carrageenan and amino acid combinations in the food , biomedical, and cosmetic fields.

Tough and self-healable carrageenan-based double network microgels enhanced physical hydrogels for strain sensor

Huan Sun,Shitong Li,Ke Li,Yanhua Liu,Cheng Tang,Zhuangzhuang Liu,Lin Zhu,Jia Yang,Gang Qin,Qiang Chen

Double network hydrogels (DN gels) demonstrate extremely high strength and toughness; however, conventional DN gels are fully chemically crosslinked, which are often softening and lack self-healing. Here, a new type of fully physical DN (P-DN) gels, that is, K + ions crosslinked κ -carrageenan (K + C) microgel (MG) composite hydrophobically crosslinked polyacrylamide (HPAAm) gels or K + C-MG/HPAAm gels, in which the HPAAm gel was physically crosslinked by hydrophobic interactions as well as topologically crosslinked by P-DN microgels, were prepared by a facile one-pot method. At the optimal condition, K + C-MG/HPAAm gel exhibited high strength (0.36 MPa) and high toughness (968 J/m 2 ). In addition, it can rapidly recover from softening and display good fatigue resistance. Notably, K + C-MG/HPAAm gel also demonstrated self-healing properties on account of its physical nature. Because there are anionic κ -carrageenan and KCl, K + C-MG/HPAAm gels are ionic conductive, which were used as strain sensors to monitor the human motions. We believe our K + C-MG/HPAAm gels provide a new insight in the field of DN gels. Graphical
