A flexible and highly ion conductive polyzwitterionic eutectogel for quasi-solid state zinc ion batteries with efficient suppression of dendrite growth

Yihan Wu,Yongqi Deng,Kefu Zhang,Yu Wang,Lele Wang,Lifeng Yan

Gels have gained much attention in flexible batteries. However, traditional hydrogel electrolytes are insufficient to solve the fundamental problems of zinc anodes, such as dendrite issues and parasitic side reactions, which severely restrict the development of zinc ion batteries. Here, a novel polyzwitterionic eutectogel (PSPE) is constructed with a DES (ChCl–EG–urea), zwitterionic sulfobetaine, and Zn(ClO4)2. Compared to common hydrogels, the PSPE eutectogel contains no free water, thus widening the electrochemical window and suppressing side reactions. The charged groups of the polyzwitterion can also guide the distribution of ions and promote smooth zinc deposition. Consequently, Zn//Zn cells with the PSPE eutectogel achieve a long cycle life of over 2200 h at 1 mA cm−2. At 0.2 A g−1, a full battery assembled with a V2O5 cathode and the PSPE eutectogel electrolyte can provide a high capacity of 201.8 mA h g−1. Furthermore, the flexible battery can light up LEDs under different bending angles. Besides, the low volatility of the DES and strong electrostatic interactions of zwitterionic groups allow the eutectogel to have excellent water retention. Under 60 °C unsealed conditions, the PSPE eutectogel retained 87.9% of its initial weight after 55 h. Such a highly conductive and anti-dehydration polyzwitterionic eutectogel shows promising applications in wearable energy storage devices.

Sodium alginate-based eutectogel fibers with high-speed ion channels with extreme environmental resilience and high-resolution for multi-environmental stimuli responses

Siyuan Chen,Tingxuan Duan,Xinyue Lou,Yibo Sun,Ying Chen,Xingmei Wang,Tianyu Wang,Yiyan Gao,Guanghui Gao

Hydrogel fibers have attracted considerable attention in sports science and healthcare for their merits on natural flexibility and favourable conductivity. However, creating hydrogel fiber sensors with flexibility at cryogenic temperatures and high-resolution responses to various environmental stimuli is still a tough problem. In this study, the fibers were fabricated using sodium alginate as the matrix and gelatin as the reinforcing phase, while deep eutectic solvent (DES) was chosen as the conductive phase. The eutectogel fiber sensors capable of real-time detection of multiple environmental signals were obtained through a strategy of wet spinning combined with solvent exchange. The tubular fiber structure provides more binding sites for DES molecules, improving flexibility and electrical conductivity. The presence of numerous strong and dense hydrogen bond chains within DES prevents them from freezing at temperatures as low as −70 °C. The sensors accurately monitored subtle strains (0.1%) and minute external humidity variations while simultaneously tracking human joint motion and respiratory activity. The fibers demonstrated excellent tensile strength (2.9 MPa), high electrical conductivity (1.44 mS·cm −1 ), dehydration resistance and potential for large-scale production. This work presents a promising platform to the actualization of advanced motion monitoring and the next-generation wearable sensing applications.

Artificial intelligence-assisted wearable porous eutectogel with high-performance NH3 enrichment and visual sensing enables non-invasive monitoring of chronic kidney disease

Xing Zhang,Ye Hu,Haofei Li,Junlin Chen,Chuhan Lv,Xiaobao Yang,Fanna Liu,Xin Chen,Hua Dong

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major public health disease that threatens human life. To address the urgent need for high-risk populations and patients to monitor CKD in a non-invasive and real-time manner, a novel wearable porous eutectogel with high-performance NH 3 enrichment and sensing is developed for the first time to rapidly and precisely detect the NH 3 concentration in the breath. Herein an eutectogel (EG) containing N-acryloyl glycinamide (NAGA), glycerol (Gly), choline chloride (ChCl) and bromocresol green (BCG) is constructed via digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing. The abundant internal hydrogen bond network in EG/BCG material shows a strong affinity towards NH 3 , leading to remarkable NH 3 capture and enrichment when exposing to the exhaled breath. On the other hand, its porous structure increases significantly the residence time and absorption rate of NH 3 . As a consequence, this new NH 3 sensing material displays fast NH 3 response time (3 s), low detection limit (0.5 ppm), wide NH 3 sensing range (0–10 ppm), high specificity and high temperature/humidity stability, leading to obvious color change within the range of NH 3 concentration in the exhaled breath of healthy individuals and CKD patients. Simply by introducing EG/BCG into a regular medical mask, wearing it for 10 min and monitoring its color change, early screening and continuous monitoring of CKD become feasible by correlating NH 3 concentration with blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels. With the aid of artificial intelligence (deep learning) algorithms, the detection accuracy of 96.5 % has been achieved in practical clinic test.

Highly Stretchable, Self-Healable and Self-Adhesive Double-Network Eutectogel Based on Gellan Gum and Polymerizable Deep Eutectic Solvent for Strain Sensing

Yifeng Gao,Jiacheng Zhou,Feifan Xu,Weiming Huang,Xiaofeng Ma,Qiang Dou,Ying Fang,Linlin Wu

Graphical A physically crosslinked double-network eutectogel with integrating stretchability, toughness, transparency, self-healing and self-adhesive performances is fabricated by physical gelation of gellan gum in deep eutectic solvent (DES) and combined with a supramolecular poly (ChCl-HEA) network based on polymerizable DES for wearable sensor application. Recently, eutectogels have gained significant attention as promising materials for wearable devices. However, developing eutectogels with integrated stretchability, good toughness, self-healing, and self-adhesive properties through non-covalent scaffold assembly is a major challenge. In this study, a fully physically crosslinked double-network (DN) eutectogel was fabricated by exploiting the high solubility and gelation of gellan gum in a deep eutectic solvent (DES) to form the first physically crosslinked network and combining it with supramolecular poly (2-hydroxyethyl acrylate-choline chloride, HEA-ChCl). The resulting gel showed high stretchability (1835 %), toughness (7.65 MJ m −3 ), desirable ionic conductivity (0.41 mS cm −1 ), adhesion, and high transparency. Assembling the gel into strain sensors allows precise monitoring of human motion (finger, wrist, elbow, and knee). The results of this study suggest that gellan gum/poly (ChCl-HEA) DN eutectogels have significant potential as highly sensitive and reliable strain sensors for wearable technology applications.

Stretchable, fatigue-resistant, and temperature-tolerant multifunctional dual-network eutectogel based on metal salt-based deep eutectic solvent for strain sensors and triboelectric nanogenerators

Xuhang Zhang,Xiaohu Li,Jinxue Yang,Yingdan Liu

The rapid advancement of flexible electronics has increased the demand for functional materials, particularly in terms of flexibility, environmental adaptability, and multifunctionality. In this study, we report a novel conductive dual-network eutectogel constructed using a low-melting-point metal salt-based deep eutectic solvent (MDES). By integrating physical and chemical crosslinking strategies, the eutectogel achieves a synergistic balance between mechanical flexibility and structural stability. The resulting material exhibits remarkable stretchability (916.49 %), excellent temperature tolerance (−20 to 55 °C), and reliable ionic conductivity. Moreover, it demonstrates strong universal adhesion (adhesive strength of 54.6 kPa on wood), outstanding fatigue resistance (maintaining a compressive strength of 135.56 kPa over 100 cycles), and high optical transparency (92 %). When implemented in strain sensors and triboelectric nanogenerators, the eutectogel enables precise detection of human motion signals and efficient energy harvesting. This work offers a promising strategy for the development of next-generation multifunctional eutectogels for flexible and wearable electronics.
