Injectable and In Situ Hydration-Reinforced Hybrid Bone Cements for Accelerated Bone Regeneration

Xing Chen,Yifan Ma,Lingfei Zhao,Lingbin Che,Dianwen Song,Zihan Wu,Changsheng Liu,Yuan Yuan

Injectable bone cements are recognized as ideal solution for bone augmentation due to their minimally invasive introduction strategy. However, current clinical formulations and composites, while demonstrating improvements in certain areas, often fail to comprehensively address challenges, including rheological injectability, mechanical stability, interconnected porosity, degradability, and bioactivity. To overcome limitations, a novel bone cement comprising linear polyhydroxy PEGylated poly(glycerol sebacate) (L-PEGS) and calcium phosphate cement (CPC) is developed. The incorporation of L-PEGS enhances injectability and reinforces the mechanical weakness of CPC, resulting in improvement in compressive strength (increased by 16.7 folds) and fatigue resistance (1000 cycles). Owing to linear polyhydroxy backbone, L-PEGS initiates self-reinforcing cross-linking reaction synchronized with the hydration of CPC into hydroxyapatite. This hydration reinforcement is mediated by its abundant hydroxyl groups and high water absorption capacity, which accelerate hydration kinetics. Concurrently, the cross-linking reaction generates in situ carbon dioxide, resulting in porous microarchitecture that facilitates hydration process, enhances cement degradability, and promotes nutrient exchange and new bone ingrowth. In vitro and vivo studies confirmed that L-PEGS/CPC substantially enhances osteogenesis compared to clinical materials. Collectively, this injectable, hydration-driven, and self-reinforcing bone cement offers comprehensive solution to the challenges in current bone graft materials, holding promise for clinical bone repair.

Zwitterionic multifunctional coatings with strong hydration for ureteral stents to inhibit infectious encrustation

Yucong Wu,Zhenqing Li,Xiufang Wen,Yanping Zhong,Haoyan Chen,Lei Qian,Jiawei Li,Sujuan Yan,Peng Yu,Ye Tian,Haoyu Jin,Zhengao Wang,Jinxia Zhai,Chengyun Ning

In the complex urinary environment, an effective method is needed to combat ureteral stent encrustation. Herein, recognizing that the adsorption of mineral salts is the initial step in the encrustation process, we utilized the barrier effect of hydration layers to inhibit encrustation. Through molecular dynamics simulations, sulfobetaine methacrylate can form a hydration layer, which repels encrustation ions in a simulated urinary environment, preventing attachment. Then, we developed a multifunctional zwitterionic polymer coating on the polyurethane stent (PU/ATS) by employing UV-initiated free radical polymerization combined with a dip-coating technique. The hydration layer endows the coating with superhydrophilicity and excellent lubricity, effectively resisting 96.1 % and 83.5 % of encrustation in 30 days and 90 days of urine flow simulation and significantly reducing the bacteria adhesion. PU/ATS demonstrated improved anti-encrustation and anti-biofilm performance under infected conditions compared to the Bard® InLay Optima® stent. Moreover, in the rat bladder encrustation model, the PU/ATS reduced encrustation by 99.6 % (no infected) and by 86.7 % (infected) without organ damage. Therefore, the PU/ATS, by leveraging the hydration layer mechanism as an effective barrier, provides a practical and highly promising solution to combat encrustation and its associated urological complications.

Directional permeation-driven microfiber composite hydrogel towards rapid sweat uptaking and hydration monitoring

Shen Hao,Liu Siyuan,Liu Mengyuan,Liu Yujie,Wen Feng,Wang Mingxu,Wang Yongfeng,Gao Qiang,Li Lianhui,Zhou Dengfeng,Xiong Zuoping,Wang Shuqi,Zhang Ting

Wearable sweat rate and electrolyte sensors offer real-time assessment of hydration status. Current epidermal microfluidic devices represent the widely adopted approach; however, their limitation for microliter-scale sweat collection often results in response latency and compromised detection accuracy. A rapid sweat-absorbing material (RSAM) filled in the collection chamber between the microfluidic device and the skin has been demonstrated as an effective solution. This work proposes a polyvinyl alcohol@polyurethane microfiber composite hydrogel (PVA@PU MH) with unidirectional sweat-transport capability in the inlet chamber of a microfluidic. The optimized PVA@PU MH exhibits a sweat collection efficiency that is 49.76 ± 6.75% higher than traditional methods. With anisotropic microchannels, PVA@PU MH leverages capillary action to confine sweat laterally and drive vertical transport directionally. Additionally, the integration of conductivity-sensing components within the microfluidic system enables the detection of both sweat rate and electrolyte concentration. A low-power unit was developed to process and wirelessly transmit real-time sweat data to mobile devices for continuous monitoring. The PVA@PU MH facilitated both faster sweat uptake and more physiologically representative analyte readings, as evidenced by a strong correlation with whole-body measurements. The proposed strategy rapidly acquires microliter sweat samples, substantially expanding wearable monitoring capabilities.

Hydration Behavior of Magnesium Oxysulfate Cement with Fly Ash via Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy

Yongshan Tan,Hongfa Yu,Wanli Bi,Nan Wang,Na Zhang

A new type of material, magnesium oxysulfate cement (MOSC), has attracted widespread attention as an environmentally friendly and low-energy inorganic green cementitious material due to its outstanding performance. In this study, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to characterize the hydration behavior and process of MOSC. EIS was also used to investigate the effect of fly ash (FA) on the hydration behavior of MOSC. Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), backscattered scanning electron microscopy (BSE), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to study the evolution of the pore structure and micromorphology of MOSC incorporated with FA. The results show that the resistance values (?1) in the equivalent circuit for MOSC increase with increasing curing time. The incorporation of FA can affect the resistance values for each element in the equivalent circuit. In the early stages of hydration (1 day and 2 days), high-volume FA can reduce the degree of hydration of MOSC paste. At the later stages of hydration, the resistance values (?1) increase with increasing FA content. The MIP, BSE, and SEM results also show that the porosity of MOSC decreases with increasing FA content; the incorporation of FA can significantly improve the morphology of MOSC, resulting in a denser microstructure. This study shows that the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is a powerful technique to investigate the hydration behavior and process of MOSC, and the results also indicate that FA is a good mineral admixture used as a partial substitute for MOSC cementitious materials.

Preparation of monovalent cation perm-selective membranes by controlling surface hydration energy barrier

Xiao Pang,Xiaohong Yu,Yubin He,Sen Dong,Xueting Zhao,Jiefeng Pan,Runnan Zhang,Lifen Liu

Cationic separating the with different valence states is greatly desirable but technically challenging. Achieving such a precise separation using membranes requires accurately distinguishing tiny differences of cations on physico-chemical properties. Here, inspired by the ion dehydration effect, a series of cation exchange membrane with adjustable surface hydrophobicity based on quaternized polypyrrole were prepared. We demonstrate that improving hydrophobicity of modified layer substantially hinder cations with higher hydration energy to enter the modified layer due to their stronger binding ability with water molecules. When applied in electro-driven cation separation, the optimal membrane exhibited an outstanding perm-selectivity between monovalent and divalent cations (P Na Mg  = 12.95, P Li Mg  = 1.28) than commercial monovalent cation perm-selective membrane (P Na Mg  = 2.46, P Li Mg  = 1.07). Overall, our results indicate that the hydrophobicity of the modified layer governs the cations dehydration behavior through the polymeric pores due to ion-pore wall interactions, providing the scientific basis for the construction of membranes with high monovalent cation perm-selectivity.

Well-Dispersed Silica Fume by Surface Modification and the Control of Cement Hydration

Rui Ma,Liping Guo,Wei Sun,Zhidan Rong

Silica fume (SF) is a valuable nanoscaled industrial by-product used in cementitious materials owing to its filling and pozzolanic effect. However, the heavy agglomeration of SF is a severe and common problem. In this study, surface modification with polyacrylic acid (PAA) was applied on SF to achieve a better dispersion and to optimize the hydration process of cement at early age. The particle size distribution and surface properties of SF, as well as the cement hydration with modified SF, were investigated. The results demonstrated that the agglomeration of SF particles was efficiently mitigated by the surface treatment with PAA, and the acceleration effect of SF was delayed by the resistance of the surface layer at early age. However, the grafted PAA layer eventually dropped in alkali solution after 6 hours, and the hydration rate was increased again and continued for long time. This work indicated that surface-modified SF was well dispersed and was able to regulate the hydration rate of cement.

High-Capacity Li4SiO4-Based CO2 Sorbents via a Facile Hydration–NaCl Doping Technique

Ke Wang,Wei Li,Zeguang Yin,Zhongyun Zhou,Pengfei Zhao

A sodium chloride (NaCl) doping–hydration technique was used to modify the structure of Li4SiO4 to improve its sorption properties at a low CO2 concentration. X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analyses were conducted to characterize the compositions, textural characteristics, morphologies, chemical valence states, molten phases, and adsorption properties of the synthesized samples. Hydration and NaCl doping produced synergistic effects. On one hand, a small particle size and large specific surface area were obtained, significantly facilitating chemisorption processes. On the other hand, co-doped sodium and chlorine induced molten phases when absorbing CO2, noticeably decreasing CO2 diffusion resistance. Thus, the CO2 absorption rate and uptake were remarkably improved. Different amounts of NaCl also greatly affected the morphology and chemisorption properties of the sorbents. At the optimized NaCl concentration, the sorbent only required 3 wt % doping to attain a maximum sorption capacity of up to 34.2 wt %. Moreover, the high capacity was maintained after 10 sorption/desorption cycles.

Comparison Study on the Effect of Interlayer Hydration and Solvation on Montmorillonite Delamination

Li Hongliang,Song Shaoxian,Zhao Yunliang,Nahmad Yuri,Chen Tianxing

The effect of water and isopropanol intercalation on montmorillonite (MMT) delamination was investigated in order to compare the roles of hydration and solvation in the delamination. Transmittance results showed that water has a significant effect on the delamination of MMT compared with isopropanol. This observation was attributed to the difference of the intercalation of water and isopropanol. Thermogravimetric (TG) results illustrate that the intercalation mass of water was greater than that of isopropanol when the pressure remained constant. Weighing test results show that the intercalation mass of water was smaller than that of isopropanol when the volume of MMT remained constant. Molecule dynamic simulation results show that the water and isopropanol molecules were interacting with Na + and siloxane surface of MMT, respectively. It was demonstrated that the hydration of the MMT interlayer followed two steps: in step 1, the Na + in the interlayer was hydrated, thereby expanding the interlayer spacing; in step 2, additional water molecules were absorbed into the expanded interlayer space. It was found that step 2 could not be actuated until the completion of step 1. For the solvation of the MMT interlayer with isopropanol, however, only one step was required, in which isopropanol was absorbed onto the siloxane sites of the interlayer while maintaining the interlayer spacing.

Effect of triisopropanolamine on compressive strength and hydration of cement-fly ash paste

Baoguo Ma,Ting Zhang,Hongbo Tan,Xiaohai Liu,Junpeng Mei,Huahui Qi,Wenbin Jiang,Fubing Zou

This paper aims to investigate the effect of triisopropanolamine (TIPA) on compressive strength and hydration of cement-fly ash paste. The samples with various dosages of TIPA were prepared with 30% fly ash (FA) and 70% cement (water/binder ratio by weight = 0.38), and cured under the standard condition. The compressive strength, pore structure, hydration process, and hydration products were investigated. The results show that TIPA can obviously increase the compressive strength of cement-FA system at the age of 7 d and 60 d, and the reasons are involved in pore structure and hydration of cement-FA system. Pore structure was characterized with mercury intrusion porosimetry, and the results show that TIPA can reduce total porosity but increase the amount of pore with size more than 50 nm, implying the air-entraining effect with negative effect on compressive strength. The result suggests that TIPA and defoaming agent should be used together to minimize the negative effect in real concrete. Furthermore, analysis of hydration products shows that TIPA can accelerate the hydration of both cement and FA, and this can also be illustrated from solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance. It is noticed that TIPA can hasten the conversion of AFt to AFm, which can be indicated from hydration heat. Additionally, the acceleration of pozzolanic reaction of FA is because TIPA can accelerate the dissolution of aluminate, silicate, and ferric into liquid paste which was demonstrated from morphology characterization and the change of ions in pore solution. Such results would be expected to provide experience for the use of alkanolamine in promoting the performance of cement-based materials.

Influence of tricalcium aluminate on the microstructure evolution of CaO specimen during hydration

Bingrong Li,Yaowu Wei,Junfeng Chen,Nan Li

C 3 A-containing CaO specimen was prepared and the evolution of its microstructure during hydration process was investigated to clarify the protective mechanism of tricalcium aluminate (C 3 A) on hydration resistance of CaO specimen. The slit-shaped micropores were formed on the grain boundary of CaO due to the stacking of lamellar C 4 AH 13 formed by the hydration of C 3 A. The contact area of residual C 3 A with the moisture was reduced by the porous C 4 AH 13 layer at the original site, which resulted in a slower dissolution rate of C 3 A grain through the porous layer. In addition, the crack propagation and the formation of macropores were inhibited by the pinning effect of C 4 AH 13 , which was beneficial to the improvement of hydration resistance.

Synergistic hydration lubrication of polyurethane meniscus based on zwitterionic structures and hyaluronic acid

Lingfeng Hu,Jinge Li,Jie Wang,Xiaoniu Yang

In this study, polyurethanes with graded sulfobetaine content (PU-SBs) were employed to resolve the high friction of artificial menisci. Under the simulated gait of knee joints , the coefficient of friction of PU-SB60 in hyaluronic acid (HA) aqueous solution was similar to that of the native meniscus. Importantly, this phenomenon was caused by synergistic hydration lubrication based on sulfobetaine groups and HA, that a thicker and stronger hydration layer was preferred to form quickly on the surfaces of HA-adsorbed PU-SB60 and was harder to be destroyed by the friction force . Furthermore, PU-SB60 exhibited both excellent modulus and long-term low cytotoxicity. Therefore, PU-SB60 has the potential to be applied for artificial menisci due to its overall performance.

Free-standing vanadium oxide hydration/reduced graphene oxide film for ammonium ion supercapacitors

Yanzhi Fan,Yao Yu,Peng Wang,Jingjing Sun,Mingjie Hu,Jianguo Sun,Yifu Zhang,Chi Huang

Aqueous ammonium-ion energy storage systems have recently gained continuous attention owing to the advantages of sustainability and environmental-friendliness in the grid-scale application. However, ammonium-ion supercapacitors are still in their infancy, and it is of great challenge in developing suitable materials for application in wearable energy storage devices. Herein, we develop a vanadium oxide hydration (V 2 O 5 · n H 2 O)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite film (denoted as VGF) as a free-standing paper-like electrode for ammonium-ion storage, where V 2 O 5 · n H 2 O shows an expanded interlayer spacing and is sandwiched by rGO through chemical bonds. As a result, the designed VGF exhibits a capacitance of 600F·g −1 at 0.2 A·g −1 and good cyclability of over 10,000 cycles with a retention of 93 % using PVA/NH 4 Cl gel electrolyte. Meanwhile, the ammonium-ion storage mechanism in VGF electrode is further verified to be dominated by the intercalation pseudocapacitance and electric double-layer capacitance. Furthermore, the quasi-solid-state symmetric supercapacitor (SSC) has been also assembled to assess the feasibility of practical applications in wearable devices . As expected, the SSC possesses an areal capacitance of 241 mF·cm −2 at 0.1 mA·cm −2 (0.82 Wh·m −2 at 0.09 W·m −2 ) and an excellent cyclability of 20,000 cycles with a retention of 92 %, which is comparable to that achieved in the vanadium oxides powder-made electrodes and the SSC made of. Together with the excellent flexibility and feasibility of parallel/series combination, the VGF SSC devices shows great possibility for the applications in wearable devices, which further proves the great potential of this designed VGF free-standing electrode for ammonium-ion storage.
