Despite the success of galvanic replacement in preparing hollow nanostructures with diversified morphologies via the replacement reaction between sacrificial metal nanoparticles (NPs) seeds and less active metal ions, limited advances are made for producing branched alloy nanostructures. In this paper, we report an extended galvanic replacement for preparing branched Au–Ag NPs with Au-rich core and Ag branches using hydroquinone (HQ) as the reductant. In the presence of HQ, the preformed Ag seeds are replaceable by Au and, in turn, supply the growth of Ag branches. By altering the feed ratio of Ag seeds, HAuCl4, and HQ, the size and morphology of the NPs are tunable. Accordingly, the surface plasmon resonance absorption is tuned to near-infrared (NIR) region, making the branched NPs as potential materials in photothermal therapy. The branched NPs are further coated with polydopamine (PDA) shell via dopamine polymerization at room temperature. In comparison with bare NPs, PDA-coated branched Au–Ag (Au–Ag@PDA) NPs exhibit improved stability, biocompatibility, and photothermal performance. In vitro experiments indicate that the branched Au–Ag@PDA NPs are competitive agents for photothermal ablation of cancer cells.

Carboxyl functionalized graphene (CFG) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) were constructed on the carboxylated glassy carbon electrode based on covalent interaction for simultaneous determination of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC). Scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results proved that the CFG SAMs was successfully formed with enhanced conductivity. According to electrochemical voltammetry experiments, the modified electrode showed excellent sensitivity and selectivity for HQ and CC. Under optimal conditions, the sensing platform showed wide linear response for HQ and CC with detection limit of 0.2 µM ( S/N =3) and 0.6 µM ( S/N =3), respectively. Moreover, the sensor also displays good reproducibility and stability.

A three-dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) polycysteine (PCE) film was electropolymerized on the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) using polystyrene spheres as template. The electrochemical behaviors of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC) were studied, and two independent oxidation peaks were observed. Compared with the bare GCE and GCE modified with PCE without using template, this electrode displays larger peak currents which may be attributed to the structure of PCE and the large surface area of the nanopore array structure. As a result, a novel electrochemical method was developed for the simultaneous determination of HQ and CC. Under the optimized conditions, the peak currents were linear to concentrations in the wider ranges of 9 to 700 μM for HQ and from 3 to 700 μM for CC. The method was successfully applied to the simultaneous determination of HQ and CC in spiked water samples, and the results are satisfactory.

Micromotors, which combine nanotechnology with autonomous movement, have attracted extensive interest in the field of environmental monitoring and remediation. However, it is still a challenge to develop a facile method to prepare a multifunctional micromotor for simultaneously detecting and removing organic pollutants from water. Herein, we report a novel magnetically controllable Janus micromotor with peroxidase-like activity for simultaneous colorimetric detection and degradation of hydroquinone (HQ). Such polyethylene glycol (PEG) modified Janus micromotor was composed of calcined manganese(II) acetate modified Fe3O4@polyacrylic acid (PAA) and ferric oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles. The obtained Janus micromotors (P-FM JMMs) have a unique asymmetric structure and exhibit autonomous motion with a maximum speed of 95.2 ± 3.02 μm s−1 in the presence of 100 mM H2O2. Combining the advantages of autonomous motion and superior peroxidase-like activity, P-FM JMMs as effective micromotors were established for dynamic sensitive colorimetric detection of HQ with a detection limit of 0.0923 μM and rapid degradation of HQ via excellent Fenton-like activity in water. In addition, such Janus micromotors also could achieve effective magnetic recovery to reduce water pollution. The strategy provides a new insight for the future multifunctional task allocation of micromotors on demand.

Four Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (MIL-101(Fe), MIL-53(Fe), MIL-88(Fe), and MIL-100(Fe)) were synthesized using a solvothermal method, and further characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The synthesized Fe-MOFs were used to fabricate the modified carbon paste electrodes (CPE) for simultaneous detection of hydroquinone and catechol. Among the MILs (Fe) modified CPEs, MIL-101(Fe)/CPE exhibited extraordinary electrochemical sensitivity because of MIL-101 (Fe)’s excellent conductivity. The oxidation potential separation of hydroquinone and catechol achieved 190 mV. Compared with CPE, the oxidation currents of hydroquinone and catechol at MIL-101/CPE were 10-fold higher and the reduction currents were 5-fold higher. The linear range was 2 - 90 μM for hydroquinone and 2 - 100 μM for catechol, and the detection limit was 0.58 μM and 0.62 (S/N = 3) μM for hydroquinone and catechol. Furthermore, the application of MIL-101 (Fe)/CPE has been validated in an actual river water sample with the satisfied recoveries of 90.21 - 102.36% and 91.11 - 102.19% for hydroquinone and catechol, respectively.

Electropolymerization of L-lysine incorporating multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) dispersed in β -cyclodextrin prepolymer (CDP) solution was constructed a very efficient sensor. Scanning electron microscopy was employed to characterize the surface morphology of the modified electrode. The proposed sensor excellently enhanced the selectivity in the simultaneous determination of HQ and CC by differential pulse voltammetry and cyclic voltammetry. Comparing with bare GCE, MWCNTs/GCE, CDP-MWCNTs/GCE, the introduction of L-lysine polymer film effectively declined the shoulder peak of buffer soultion which seriously interfered the dection of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC) isomers. The PLL/CDP-MWCNTs/GCE displayed good discrimination ability and high sensitivity toward HQ and CC, peak-to-peak separation about 105 mV were obtained. The linear response range for hydroquinone and catechol were 0.1 μM – 100 μM. The detection limits of HQ and CC were 0.044 μM, 0.058 μM, respectively.

Herein, for the first time, a self-supported electrode for simultaneous determination of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CA) was synthesized by loading NiCoFe-layered double hydroxide nanoflowers on hydrophilic carbon cloth (NiCoFe-LDH NFs/CC) with a simple hydrothermal method. By combining the advantages of NiCoFe-LDH NFs with hydrophilic carbon cloth such as good conductivity, 3D porous network structure, high electrocatalytic activity, and fast electron transport, the proposed NiCoFe-LDH NFs/CC electrode dispalyed good electrochemical activity for detecting HQ and CA. The binder-free and free-standing electrode based on NiCoFe-LDH NFs/CC possessed good linear range (5–200 μM), low determination limit (0.15 μM and 0.11 μM), and strong selectivity. Furthermore, it also showed good electrochemical stability without obvious change in ten days. More importantly, as-prepared electrode could be used as an efficient electrochemical sensor to determine HQ and CA content in actual samples with good recovery rate, revealing its feasibility in potential application.

Quantitatively simultaneous detection of hydroquinone (HQ) and catechol (CC) with low limit of detection (LOD) and wide detection range is of critical significance in water quality control but faces great challenges due to their isomer similarity and a large range of contamination concentrations . Herein, high density of boron atoms is introduced into nitrogen-doped nanocarbon (BNC) to realize simultaneous detection of HQ and CC with a large separation of peak potential (Δ E p ) of 111 mV between oxidations of HQ and CC by differential pulse voltammetry . Besides, extremely low LODs of 33.3 and 16.3 nM for HQ and CC were achieved through amperometric I - t curve with wide linear ranges of 0.099 ∼ 43340 µM and 0.049 ∼ 5110 µM, respectively. The systematical investigation of the enhancement mechanism by spectroscopy and DFT calculations clearly reveal that the boron-nitrogen co-doping creates rich electroactive sites for high sensing performance toward HQ and CC, thereby shedding lights on the great effect of a unique nanostructure on electrocatalysis in sensing applications.

An Au-based nanozyme composite (AuNPs/Cu,I) was constructed by using Cu,I-doped carbon dots (Cu,I-CDs) as the reducing agent as well as the nanozyme. Notably, AuNPs/Cu,I nanozyme not only possessed the intrinsic activity of mimicking enzymes of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase at different conditions but was also employed as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) enhancer. The combination of Cu,I-CDs and AuNPs promoted the electron transferability, leading to increased peroxidase-like activity and superoxide-like activity. Compared to the individual Cu,I-CDs and AuNPs nanozyme, the AuNPs/Cu,I composite demonstrated promising peroxidase-like activity by transferring electrons instead of generating OH. Interestingly, the multienzyme-like activity of AuNPs/Cu,I nanozyme could be finely tuned by changing the composition of Cu 0 /Cu + and Au. The tert -butyl hydroquinone (TBHQ) as the substrate could be catalyzed with AuNPs/Cu,I nanozyme to produce red substances, resulting in a significant Raman enhancement effect at the same time, showing good linear range from 0.11 to 10 mg L −1 . Overall, the current investigation provides a flexible and controllable way to design multifunctional nanozymes along with the Raman enhancement strategy based on the catalysis of nanozyme. A novel additive system comprising bis-(sodium sulfopropyl)-disulfide, polyethylene glycol and hydroquinone (HQ) was developed and investigated to achieve high rate copper electrodeposition at high temperature. HQ, as the key additive compound in this system, refines the Cu grain, makes the coating surface bright and smooth at high current density. The underlying mechanism of the additive-assisted electroplating was investigated through electrochemical, morphological characterizations and molecular dynamics simulation. Nanocubical copper particles were found through chronoamperometry tests, which explains the fine crystalline Cu grains and the bright coating surface. Additionally, the formation of the nanocubical copper particles is caused by the different adsorption energies of HQ on (311), (111) and (220) crystal faces and further leads to a strong suppression on the (220) orient crystal faces. Moreover, the electroplating results of through-holes illustrate the feasibility of this additive system in practical applications.

By using dopamine (DA) as a functionalized and linked agent, a novel nanohybrid nitrogen-doped carbon black/reduced graphene oxide (NCB/rGO) was prepared successfully via a green three-step process in this work, and then, NCB/rGO was applied in the field of electrochemical sensing through introducing the case of simultaneous determination of two pollutants, hydroquinone (HQ) and paracetamol (PCM). The produced NCB/rGO was characterized by various technologies including transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and electrochemical method. Owing to the synergetic advantages from each component in nanohybrids, the results showed that the NCB/rGO nanohybrids can exhibit excellent electrochemical sensing performances and the responsive peak current of HQ and PCM at NCB/rGO electrode are ∼3.2 and 23.0 times as high as those at single CB and rGO electrode, respectively. After optimizing the detection conditions, the analytical responses of NCB/rGO modified electrode has a linear range between 0.05 and 20.0 μM for both targets with low detection limit (16.5 nM for HQ and 26.2 nM for PCM). It's believed that the developed NCB/rGO novel nanohybrids will have important applications in electrochemical sensing of HQ and PCM as well as many other analytes.

A novel self-protection sensor was successfully constructed based on an interesting thermo-sensitive triblock polymer PS-PNIPAm-PS. At low temperatures (<24 °C), the analyte was able to undergo the redox process at the modified electrode. However, the polymer shrunk and accumulated at high temperatures (>30 °C), which dramatically increased the electron transfer resistance (Rct) of the modified electrode and consequently blocked the occurrence of the redox reaction to protect the electrode from high temperatures and enhance its stability. Under optimized conditions, the proposed sensor showed a good detection range for hydroquinone (6×10 −7 to 2.35×10 −3 M) and a low LOD (490 nM). The sensor was also successfully applied for detecting hydroquinone in real samples. The present work may provide a novel method for electrode protection, high-temperature alarm, high-temperature protection of batteries and new sensors production.
